It’s good to be back writing about FPL – it’s been a while! Before I get into it, I want to thank the team at Fantasy Football Scout again for rescuing the 59th Minute Podcast and giving me the opportunity to type some words about the game we all love (and hate). I’m looking forward to sharing my FPL thoughts with you once a week for the rest of the campaign and for the next few seasons! There will also be a new podcast episode today after the press conferences.

I’ve been given free rein for this first piece so I’ve decided to use it as an opportunity to reflect on my rank rise from outside the top one million at the restart following the World Cup, to 65k going into Gameweek 30. Is the top 10k achievable? I’m certainly going to give it a crack!

When FPL managers are not where they want to be in the rankings or mini-leagues, one of the most common questions I get asked on a weekly basis is – who are the best differentials to close the gap?

The key message I want to get across in this piece is that you don’t need differentials to make up ground. I’ve been playing this game for a very long time (since 2002/03) and I’ve been in the position many times where the season is not going to plan and you get to a crossroads. One route is to keep plodding along, playing it safe and chipping away slowly at the rank. The alternative is to ‘go for it’ and make some risky transfers and captaincy picks. Having explored both paths over the years, I’m very much in the camp of keeping it simple, making sensible transfers and captaincy calls, focusing on the good value picks from the best teams that have great fixtures. That’s FPL in a nutshell.

Differentials are called differentials for a reason, they differ from the optimal picks. More often than not, going with too many low-owned players will lead to bigger problems.

When I think back to the start of the World Cup, my plan for after it was to come back and play very aggressively due to my poor rank. However, over the course of the tournament, my thoughts reverted to my usual ‘safe’ style of play and my Gameweek 17 squad didn’t include any surprise selections. I took the slow-and-steady approach to climbing the rankings.

Gameweek 17 Team

Looking back, from Gameweeks 17 to 25, my starting XI was almost exclusively made up of players from Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur with a sprinkling of Double Gameweek picks from other teams at various points. Squeezing in as many players as possible from the best teams in the league might sound like an obvious FPL strategy but it’s one I constantly have to remind myself of. When there’s a 50/50 call on a transfer, the team they play for is often the deciding factor. A good example of that was Bruno Fernandes (£9.6m) vs James Maddison (£8.3m) for Double Gameweek 29. I was torn on which way to go. In the end, the asset from the better side made it in, not that it got me any points (yet!).

A key decision with the unlimited transfers in Gameweek 17 was to drop the best bargain basement midfielder we’ve ever had in FPL, Andreas Pereira (£4.3m), in favour of a stronger midfield five. On paper, Arsenal’s fixtures weren’t great at that point which resulted in most managers going with just one of their midfielders. I viewed that as an opportunity and went with both Bukayo Saka (£8.6m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£6.6m), which paid off.

Going with Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.7m) in goal at that point also played a big part in the rank rise. Josh from the excellent Always Cheating podcast famously once said, “When the game throws you a bone, you grab it”. A Chelsea goalkeeper at £4.5m felt very much like that.

Would you het rid of Maddison (BOU), to get Haaland?

    Toney+Maddison > Haaland+Grealish

Yeah, Bournemouth are actually still playing OK (created the highest xG Brighton have faced in something like 11 games), not confident of seeing a huge turnaround in Leicester's fortunes right now

Yup i would if Haaland likely to start. I'm keeping Maddison 1 more week as have money for Toney to Haaland.

I've gone from thinking of bringing in Grealish or Haaland to probably rolling FT to now considering WCing and sticking myself to FH32, which I was planning on getting through using FTs and saving FH for 36/37/38. Definitely feels like the fixtures are there to be attacked in these next 2 weeks for a few teams and not sure how much benefit I'll get from WC33 over this.

    Kepa (Neto)
    Chilwell Trippier White (Estu Henry)
    Saka Mac Mitoma Rashford (Maddison)
    Toney Isak Kane

Thoughts? Definitely are a few in this team I'm happy / I feel I need to shift (Kepa, Henry, Estupiñan maybe, Maddison, Toney +/ Isak)

Yes, same with me (see below) looking at FH in 32 after WC this week. What Man City def you thinking to bring in?

I'd say Stones, this more forward position he's playing in looks beneficial for him and I thought I read that he started every game he's been available for in the last decent while (bar one in which he had just returned in). He's not only playing more advanced but looked superb in the role so far

Just one word of caution there - did you read the City article here yesterday? Luke reckons Stones will be rotated:
"Stones won’t play two or three games in a week. Pep knows he breaks, otherwise he would be nailed as he’s just so good."
While Ake is now apparently in another category altogether:
"Ederson, Dias, Ake, Grealish and Haaland are pretty much glue. Just below that you have Stones, Gundogan and De Bruyne. Laporte wants to leave so is close to frozen out at the moment.”

Cheers I actually missed that. Hmmm think I may still chance it, I'll have a bench at least so I shouldn't be depending on him and I doubt he'd be subbed on much

I think i would attack the fixtures with your WC and clear out the BB junk. A £3.8m fodder on your bench will free up a bit of cash for next week too

I'm considering a WC this week too. If I leave it much later there won't be enough GW left for the WC to really pay off. Getting on the City assets early for the next 2 could be good and I can see a good team with Salah, Kane and Haaland. Might wait just one more week as the fixtures this week are ok (e.g. Maddison v BOU, Watkins v NFO) and Liv have Ars which makes getting Salah a little less attractive. I don't have a one transfer route to Haaland though (except Kane) and that might swing the WC.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years

I'm looking at possible WC teams now and I can't afford to have Haaland, Kane and Salah together. I don't want Salah until GW32 and will FH him in so really don't need until 33/34, but it means selling Kane. Think I'm OK with that but I'm actually considering doing it now on WC instead. He does have Bournemouth next week of course, but in the last 11 GWs he's only scored more than 8pts once (and that was against a Forest side that are atrocious away from home), Spurs' poor performance on Monday isn't making me feel like things will drastically improve any time soon either. He's ticking over very well of course but I'm not too sure how essential I deem him, especially especially if other forwards are doing well (I'm thinking of moving to Ferguson to prepare for DGW34)

Yeah. Kane has been so reliable, but Spurs don't inspire confidence - and no extra fixtures. I like Ferguson as a third forward with all the Bri doubles. Could make a case for Watkins, Jesus or even Alvarez as a third forward too, all of which free up loads of money. Still not quite sure so may just leave it one more week to see how things develop.

Similar boat but I'm thinking my players are ok this week so i think I'm taking a -4 to get Haaland in.

Still going to FH in 32 but will hold my WC for 34 as a lot can still happen between now and then

Have a WC and FH left. Is it worth WC this team to FH in 32?

    DDG/Ward
    Trip/TAA/White/Shaw/Estup
    Salah/Saka/Odegaard/Rash/Mitoma
    Nunez/Toney/Watkins

I think you’re pretty well set. FH 32, WC 33. Just buys you a little time to monitor form and I’m case there are any injuries between now and 32. Unless getting Haaland is a priority for you given you have £0.0 ITB

    Bench one of these:

I'd say C too. Definitely not A, B depends on how you see Sunday going and if Arsenal can cope with Anfield Liverpool. I can really see Odegaard having a big game against that midfield if they can manage it

Should I start Billing @ awful Leicester or Havertz @ Wolves?

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

I expect Chelsea to start scoring goals under Lampard but the question is who he plays and what system. I've seen a lot of suggestions that Aubameyang will be brought in from the cold so it's possible that Havertz may not play, or he may end up behind Aubameyang which could be good or bad. Personally I'd chance Billing

I'd hate to own Havertz, just don't rate him on the limited times I've watched him for Chelsea. If you've kept him to this point though I think you might as well play him and hope that both him and Chelsea get a boost under Lampard.

Looking to offload Havertz, Toney & Maddison over the next 2 GWs.

    A) Havertz & Toney - Haaland & Jesus (bench Maddison then sell for KDB/Salah next week)

    B) Havertz & Maddison - Haaland & KDB (bench Toney & figure out what to do with him next week)

    Leno
    Chilwell James Trippier
    Saka Rashford Mitoma March
    Isak Toney* Havertz*
    (Raya, Maddison*, Estupinan, Shaw)

A looks nice but Jesus will surely have his minutes managed. Might be worth the risk though.

      I’d play Maddison over March

Yeah rotation is a slight concern given Trossard's form & I would hypothetically prefer Martinelli, but this is my only real route to double Arsenal attack. I do think Jesus' pressing will be key in some of these tougher fixtures though

Hmmm I'd be tempted to say B, but I do have a sneaky feeling KDB may get benched this week for some reason. Jesus is an interesting punt, one I'd be curious about making myself, I'd just be worried that away to Liverpool may be one of those games where he's doing more pressing and tackling than anything else and so I could see him picking up a card

This is my main concern with KDB. Had a look yesterday at his mins around UCL & he hasn't started the preceding league game & the UCL tie since they last played Saints in October

Cheers. If I do A Maddi will be benched, but I can just do Havertz - Haaland, play Maddi one last time & take a hit next week

I'll be keeping Toney until he gets the yellow or a ban as I see him as possibly a good differential with many shifting him for Haaland. Swapped Kane for Haaland last GW hoping it would pay off. It didn't!! I also have Havertz, and Jesus is currently my top option but may delay to have Havertz on the bench in case of Haaland no show, and just do Jensen > KDB this GW.

If I were you I'd lean towards B) with Toney > Jesus later.

p.s. If I had Maddison I'd want him out too!

Looking at Arsenal defence on WC, here are their remaining fixtures:

    Liverpool (A)
    West Ham(A)
    Soton (H)
    City (A)
    Chelsea (H)
    Newcastle (A)
    Brighton (H)
    Forest (A)
    Wolves (H)

Would you keep? I was going to keep Ben White but I'd probably only play him in 3 of the remaining 9 games, 2 of which are their very last fixtures.

I am always going to take a hit between GW29 and GW34 to do Toney + Watkins + Saka + Madders + Zinc -> Haaland + Greenwood + Bruno + Salah + Ake. Held off taking the hit to do Saka -> Bruno in GW29, so the hit will now take place between GW30 and GW34.

What's the move for this week?
    1) Toney -> Haaland
    2) Toney + Saka -> Haaland + Bruno for a hit
    3) Toney + Madders -> Haaland + Bruno for a hit

Looking for some advice. Big mistake last GW. Took a -8 to set up to use my BB and forgot to activate it! Lost out on 28 points!!
I was keen to get rid of BB to through everything into starting 11 for remaining games but now I'm stuck. I have 3 from Man U and Brighton who both blank in 32 then double in 34 and have no City or Arsenal (apart from Zinc) Help needed... as not sure how to manage it??

No FH remaining? If so, this is going to be difficult. I think you have to start working towards BB34, even if you field a seriously depleted team in GW32 & take a bit of a hammering

No FH unfortunately. Yeah i think thats the only way. Im going to have to try and get as much out of BB34 as possible.
