Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers won’t be able to call upon the services of Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) in Gameweek 31.

A muscle injury picked up by Rashford in Saturday’s win over Everton has not only ruled him out of Thursday’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final, first-leg tie against Sevilla but more games beyond it.

This latest update came from Erik ten Hag’s pre-match press conference ahead of that aforementioned clash with the La Liga outfit.

The Dutchman also brought us news of Luke Shaw (£5.1m), with the key quotes detailed below.

We’ve also got updates to bring you from two of the three other clubs involved in midweek European action, Manchester City and Chelsea.

West Ham United’s David Moyes will face reporters later on Wednesday but the good news from east London is that Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m) was back in training today, having missed out in Gameweek 30.

MAN UTD

The Red Devils put out an injury update on Rashford even before ten Hag faced the media, saying that their top goalscorer would be out for “a few games” but return in the “final weeks”.

“The forward was withdrawn in the 80th minute of Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Everton at Old Trafford and immediately headed to the dressing room for treatment.

“Subsequent assessment of the injury suggested that Marcus will be unavailable for a few games, but is expected to be back for the season run-in.

“The England international’s absence is a disappointment given his red-hot form this season, with 28 goals in all competitions.

“But there will also be relief about the prospect of his return for important games in the final weeks of the season.” – Man Utd’s update on Marcus Rashford

Ten Hag followed that up with an update of his own, although he merely echoed what the club had stated above.

“A few games. That’s the statement. So I can’t give more details of it because we don’t know, we have to see how it develops, the injury.” – Erik ten Hag on Marcus Rashford

Later in the presser, ten Hag revealed that Rashford would “return quickly”.

“Of course, it’s a setback and he’s disappointed, but he’s not totally broke because he knows he will return quickly and so he’s optimistic. He’s started straight on his recovery and his rehab, so that helps to get back soon.” – Erik ten Hag

As for Luke Shaw (hamstring), the news was more positive.

Asked about the left-back and Alejandro Garnacho (ankle), ten Hag said:

“Both not available [for Thursday]. Definitely the injury of Garnacho is more severe, more strong. Luke Shaw I expect him back at short notice.” – Erik ten Hag

MAN CITY

There was only Phil Foden (appendicitis) absent for Manchester City’s excellent win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday but the reigning Premier League champions were handed a bit of a scare midway through the second half of that victory, with Kevin De Bruyne needing treatment on an ankle injury (reported as a knee problem elsewhere).

The Belgian was substituted soon after but Guardiola allayed fears of a medical issue.

“Tactical decision. Julian [Alvarez] for him.

“I’m here to take the decisions, to see the performances on the pitch. In that moment, we needed extra energy from Julian, that’s why I decided. I am here to take the decisions and, I take it. That is my biggest quality as a manager, so I take it.” – Pep Guardiola on Kevin De Bruyne’s substitution

CHELSEA

Frank Lampard almost has a full squad available to him for Wednesday’s clash with Real Madrid, a luxury that his predecessor Graham Potter rarely enjoyed.

Thiago Silva (knee), Mason Mount (pelvic) and N’Golo Kante (rested on Saturday) were all passed fit in Lampard’s presser, while Cesar Azpilicueta (head) and Marcus Bettinelli (knock) have both trained and travelled with their teammates to Spain.

That only leaves Carney Chukwuemeka (unspecified) and long-term absentee Armando Broja (ACL) on the sidelines.

Lost on the last article…probably the millionth time similar has been asked, but best move here?

1FT. 0.8 ITB. Will FH next week so moves are with 34 in mind too:

    Raya
    Trippier, Chilwell, Estupinian
    Mitoma, Saka, Martinelli, Maddison
    Kane, Watkins, Haaland

    (Iversen, Schar, Shaw, Rashford)

    A) Rash/Maddy - Grealish
    B) Rash/Maddy- March
    C) Shaw/Chil - Ake

They all look like decent moves, I'd prefer A.

I think A is the move. I a tempted to do it with Maddi on basis that I am FH32 and I don't mind benching Rashford in 33 with Spurs away. Unless the presser from ETH before the weekend suggests Rashford is a risk for 34 I'll keep

Can Chelsea get anything positive in Madrid tonight?

Even just a goal in it would be something for the second leg.

    Raya
    Trippier Shaw* Chilwell
    Fernandes Rashford* Mitoma March
    Haaland Kane Watkins
    Kepa // Maddison Estupiñán Schar

    Considering a -8 (eek!)

    Rashford/Maddison/Kane
    to
    Salah/Grealish/Isak*

    Thoughts?

It's more of a percentage play, with the longer-term in mind.

Do [Salah/Grealish/Isak] outscore [Kane/Maddison/March] by 8 points this week?

do you reckon Iask gets sufficient game time at Villa?

      I've got him and it's a doubt.

You're basically backing Salah to go big at Leeds, even if he gets a goal and an assist Kane can easily manage a couple himself.

I'd probably ditch Maddison first and get in a Rashford replacement myself. Over 2 weeks or for a hit and play just 1 Brighton midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

Not sure on the NEW forwards. More xMins overall than Wilson I'd say, but I can also afford Wilson.

I can just go Maddison > Grealish, but am I going to be selling Rashford & Kane anyway to get Salah etc in coming weeks? And being underfunded for it probably by that time?

I can see the temptation and I can't do it without hits but no FH means I'm holding my wildcard for gw33.

But if you want Salah for gw32 may as well go early.

Can you afford Jesus instead of Newcastle forwards?

I have FH. It's just making the Salah move early. No - would have 6.9m for that spot.

I get the logic and agree that if you are definitely going to make these moves at some point anyway (and think they bring you more points this week) then it doesn't matter if your gameweek rank suffers the -8 this week rather than e.g. -4 then another -4. Also agree that Salah's ceiling v Leeds in probably higher than Kane v Bournemouth (a seriously underrated side around these parts).

Isak is the only issue. I actually have him too and, given the improvements in Newcastle's attack since he's been starting, I really want to hold on & hope the rotation issues simply fade away after my FH. I can also afford to bench/cover him occasionally. But it is a bit of a risky move with Wilson looking sharper again.

... and does Wilson have penalties if they both play?

As seen on Saturday tho, both Wilson and Isak combining can be a better outcome.

Salah vs Leeds looks good. Liverpool's away form is shocking so its not the juicy fixture its been for Mo in the past. Even with a guy out of form and an injured player being lost, I am not convinced it pays off

I think i am doing Salah GW32 but i am not FHting so you can do this in GW33 for Kane instead

Haaland/MaCallister to Salah/Eduoard. Probably do Chilwell to TAA/Shaw for a -8. GW33 Kane to Haaland

        But sets up GW34 well

        TC Haaland GW34

Mahrez should be safe for this week if you're deadending your team or something like that. But when Foden returns you'll be in trouble

I prefer Grealish out of the two.

Still tossing up whether to bring him in myself (I already own Martinelli and three Brighton players). The key question for me is whether it's better to go with Grealish and risk the rotation or an Eze / Olise.

Rash > Martinelli here? (FT, 6.9m for a replacment)

    Ederson
    Trippier, White, A.Moreno
Salah (V), Grealish, Mitoma, RASHFORD, Saka
    Kane, Haaland (C)

    Iversen; Ferguson, N.Williams, Ricardo

Only FH left but I can get away with not using it in 32 probably, if I sell Rash now.

I've gone Rashford to Martinelli today, it makes sense for my setup for the next few weeks.

You've got Grealish who is the form player over the last couple of games but Martenelli is way ahead on points per match.

If Arsenal are going to win it they need to keep performing and a score draw at Man City would work for them.

Martinelli or a Palace midfielder (Olise), if you are not FH32

You can use Olise for 33 as well

      This is my dilemma too.

With this news, is Rash to Grealish the clear best move here?

Would have liked to ship out Maddison and Shaw/Chilwell the other problems.

    Trip Shaw Chilwell
    Mitoma Martinelli Rashford Saka
    Haaland Kane Watkins

    Raya Maddison Mee Estup

Rashford half dead is better than Maddison right now. I’m leaning towards leaving Rash on the bench and bringing in Grealish for Max Allister. You could do similar with Maddison. Bench looks okay

    Trippier Gabriel Chilwell
    Mitoma Rashford* martinelli Saka
    Kane Haaland Watkins

Subs - Kepa, Mee, Estupinan, Macallister

Looking to bundle through to 32 by making some transfers this week then FH34 so do I
    A. Estupinan & Rashford > Mings & Grealish [-4 and swapping a BGW for another BGW in Grealish]

    Week 31 Rashford to Grealish
    Week 32 FH
Week 33 Maddison to Salah, Kane to Isak -4
Week 34 Chilwell to TAA and Raya to Ederson - 4 ( 10 doublers plus Isak or Trippier home to SOU)

Issue you have is that, with FH32 you can't build up 2FT before 33 to move funds from Kane to Salah without a hit so its probably going to be a hit in 33 or wait until 34

I dont like the Raya - Ederson for a hit part. Ederson's ceiling is 12pts & Raya has Forest (H) - seems like a "win" here would basically be net gain of 2pts. Rest looks good to me

Is doing Maddi to Grealish and benching Rashford silly? If Jack gets a rest it leaves me thin on cover with Rashford and Shaw on the bench...

I think I am happy keeping Rashford over Maddi in isolation, but looking at wider implications of Pep Roulette possibly change that...

I've done Rash > Grealish following the news today.

But I'm FH in GW32 & WC in GW33 - so there's no point in holding Rash to only see his value drop...

Thinking of moving Mads > Kulu for a hit - but going to ponder on that for the next 48 hours...

Sounds fine to me. Keeping Maddison is a guaranteed future transfer booked in; keeping Rashford keeps your options open. Is your 3rd sub likely to get any appearance points at least? Think Grealish probably cameos even if not starting anyway (and I think he will start)

He came off early last week and may not be able for multiple games in a week. I brought him in last week but the early sub was a blow and I'm not too confident he plays against Leicester. Ake should be more nailed, Stones bigger upside

As a one week punt it doesn't feel the worst given the fixture...

Don't think Richarlison will start given he's coming back from injury.

Son seems the most logical MID option - but he's way too expensive for me!

Rate my WC team thanks. No FH (or any other chips left). I know, I’m playing differently to the recommended strategies!

    Pickford, Steele
    TAA, Trippier, Guehi, Holding, Toti
    Salah, Grealish, Martinelli, Mitoma, Olise
    Haaland, Kane, Watkins
    0.1ITB

Idea would be to use transfers up to 34 to get a few more doubles in. Maybe use Kane or Watkins to free up funds depending on form.

Not too keen on TC so late in the season, certain spots could be wrapped up by then leading to rotation, as well as impending finals on the horizon

I wouldn't WC or FH that late, but a TC could be golden. Let's say Haaland has a DGW against 2 sides on the beach and they're neck-and-neck with Arsenal. Nice.

        1. The Mentaculus
          • 4 Years

Yeah I think the most likely scenario now is that the title race is still open & City are pushing to maximise GD, so it could work out great. But I still prefer TC34 - better fixtures & a guarantee that the above scenario still applies.

        2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

Fair point, I guess I just feel there's more scope for things to go wrong there. If City make the FA Cup and CL finals then the schedule looks like this:

          - GW34 1st fix - 30 Apr
          - GW34 2nd fix - 03 May
          - GW35 - 07 May (probably moved to 06 May)
          - CL Semi 1st leg - 09 May
          - GW36 - 14 May (probably moved to 13 May)
          - CL Semi 2nd leg - 16 May
          - GW37 1st fix - 20 May
          - GW37 2nd fix - 23/24/25 May
          - GW38 - 28 May
          - FA Cup Final - 03 June
          - CL Final - 10 June

The gap from GW38 to the finals is helpful but I can absolutely see more chances of rotation or early subs happening around GW37 fixtures

What does your 34 look like compared to what you want in say 33 and 35? Is it sufficiently different to warrant the chip?

Lot of people will FH in 32 so less than 11 and a hit might put you at disadvantage that you may not make up in 34
