How AFCON will impact FPL in 2023/24

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers face disruption to their seasons in the New Year thanks to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

That’s because the 2023 edition of the tournament will now take place in January 2024, having been delayed due to the adverse summer weather concerns in host nation Ivory Coast.

Here we look at which players, teams and Gameweeks will be affected.

WHEN IS AFCON 2023?

AFCON will take place between Saturday 13 January and Sunday 11 February 2024, covering Gameweeks 21 to 24 in FPL.

Thankfully, when it comes to pre-tournament call-ups, the week before this is dedicated to the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Gameweek 20 starts in the final days of December.

The dates for the AFCON knockout round ties haven’t yet been announced, so we can’t yet pinpoint when eliminated players will return to club action.

AFCON + FPL CALENDAR

WEEKEND 1Sat 13 JanSun 14 JanGAMEWEEK 21 (first half of split week)
MIDWEEK 1Tues 16 JanWed 17 Jan
WEEKEND 2Sat 20 JanSun 21 JanGAMEWEEK 21 (second half of split week)

WEEKEND 4Sat 3 FebSun 4 FebGAMEWEEK 23
MIDWEEK 4Tues 6 FebWed 7 Feb
WEEKEND 5Sat 10 FebSun 11 FebGAMEWEEK 24

This season sees the return of the winter break, so the first two-and-a-half weeks of AFCON will only see competing players miss one Premier League encounter.

AFCON: AFFECTED PLAYERS IN FPL

15 of the 24 participating teams are now known and the rest will qualify in September. It’s early days of course but these players are likely to be called up in January:

ARSENALMohamed Elneny (Egypt)
ASTON VILLABertrand Traore (Burkina Faso)
B’MOUTHHamed Traore (Ivory Coast), Dango Ouattara (Burkina Faso)
BRENTFORDFrank Onyeka (Nigeria)
BRIGHTON
BURNLEYAnass Zaroury (Morocco), Lyle Foster (South Africa)
CHELSEADavid Datro Fofana (Ivory Coast), Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal), Edouard Mendy (Senegal), Hakim Ziyech (Morocco)
C PALACEWilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast), Cheick Doucoure (Mali)
EVERTONIdrissa Gueye (Senegal), Alex Iwobi (Nigeria), Abdoulaye Doucoure (Mali)
FULHAM
LIVERPOOLMohamed Salah (Egypt)
LUTON
MAN CITYRiyad Mahrez (Algeria)
MAN UTDEric Bailly (Ivory Coast), Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast)
NEWCASTLE
N FORESTSerge Aurier (Ivory Coast), Willy Boly (Ivory Coast), Moussa Niakhate (Senegal), Cheikhou Kouyate (Senegal), Taiwo Awoniyi (Nigeria), Emmanuel Dennis (Nigeria)
SHEFF UTDIliman Ndiaye (Senegal), Ismaila Coulibaly (Mali)
TOTTENHAMPape Matar Sarr (Senegal) Yves Bissouma (Mali)
WEST HAMMaxwel Cornet (Ivory Coast), Nayef Aguerd (Morocco), Said Benrahma (Algeria)
WOLVESRayan Ait-Nouri (Algeria), Boubacar Traore (Mali)

Several of Chelsea’s African contingent are heavily linked with moves away and this would leave Nottingham Forest far in front as the side most affected by AFCON.

Mohamed Salah is the major FPL name to have already qualified and it’ll be interesting to see if Wilfried Zaha and Riyad Mahrez continue as Premier League players.

Other names that could soon be added include Brentford attackers Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon) and Yoane Wissa (DR Congo), alongside Tariq Lamptey (Ghana), Samuel Bastien (DR Congo) and the Ghanaian Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME?

كيف تخطط لـ الدوبل جيم ويك في الجولة 26؟ 1

The previous tournament happened between 9 January and 6 February 2022, covering only Gameweeks 22 and 23.

With Senegal, Egypt, Cameroon and Burkina Faso as the final four, FPL owners of Salah, Sadio Mane and Edouard Mendy had to nervously wait to see how soon they’d be reintroduced to domestic action.

Salah was reduced to a 30-minute cameo in Gameweek 24 following his late return, while Liverpool team-mate Mane – part of the triumphant Senegal side – wasn’t in the squad at all.

Chelsea and Mendy blanked in Gameweeks 24 and 25 as they participated in the Club World Cup.

Next year’s finalists will have six days until Gameweek 25, which shouldn’t be too problematic.

FPL STRATEGY: A LATER WILDCARD?

FPL notes: Klopp on penalties,

A little early to be thinking about the Fantasy ramifications? Perhaps, but those FPL managers who are planning to play an early Wildcard may want to consider the impact that a later activation may have.

As well as being able to negotiate a Salah exit or make plans for his return, there’s an expected blank for Manchester City in Gameweek 18 to be thinking about.

Fantasy managers have up to and including Gameweek 19 to use their first Wildcard and, unlike last season, there aren’t the bonus unlimited transfers in mid-season to act as a third overhaul.

Spurs are signing an Italian keeper nobody has ever heard of because they won't go to Raya's £40m valuation.

They'll look back and regret this just like Arsenal will regret not paying for Rice.

With Forest likely to have so many players away at the AFCON (6 listed in this article but could be more) isn't there a possibility that there games could be postponed like lower EPL games are when teams are badly effected by international call-up ?

They'll still have a squad of about 3 dozen.

I don't recall an AFCON less relevant to FFS - Salah's really the only player likely to be significantly owned.

Does anyone else think there should be more done to make defensive midfielders more viable choices?

Casemiro, Rodri and Rice are some of the best players on the pitch, but because of the system in play, they never get the points representative of that.

Yes FPL has always too goals, assists and CS orientated for my likely. A points system that rewards successful tackles, passes, blocks etc would bring other types of players into play.

It's been discussed quite a bit on here in the past.

The only feasible way for FPL to make defensive mids viable picks would be to introduce additional scoring criteria.

Problem is, this would add complexity to the game and deter a large chunk of their target audience from taking part.

Does Fan Team usually go live before FPL? Given I'm not playing FPL this season, I quite fancy winning it.

Superior game imo. Yet to be infested with content. The interface is shocking, however.

I've played Fanteam for the last couple of years. It's so hard and some people there have 20 teams plus in each league at a high cost.

So unless you're investing loads don't expect a very high finish.

Yeah the multi team aspect is slightly annoying, but I might just dip into a high-roller league or something where there are less likely to be those types of player.

Last season it was single entry only.

I concentrated on Fanteam and found it to be far superior to FPL.

        1) No bonus points, instead actions such as shots on target are rewarded, as is being on the winning team etc.
        2) Transfers can be saved up.
        3) No chips, just Two wild cards.

Finished in the top Two hundred just by playing sensibly. Fanteams game is more like FPL used to be, with the big plus of being able to save up transfers.

I didn’t play it last year but if memory serves me right I think it does open before fpl. Yes, definitely a superior game and the interface is terrible. My only other disappointment was that I wasn’t competing in any ml so it became a bit boring once it was obvious I wasn’t going to win the thing.
I might try and set up a money league to try and spice it up a bit this season.

If memory serves, I think it went live a few days after FPL last year. It's almost as if they wait for FPL to price players and then correct the many mistakes or just tweak them here of there.

I much prefer it, there are single entry comps now to avoid the problem that DBW mentions below and I find the interface perfectly manageable, especially once you get the hang of linking teams.

It's been very good to me financially (not so much last year) so hopefully it will return this year.

I played through Bet365 app last year, assume it's the same game having played Fan Team the season before that.

You can roll over transfers now can't you? So bank up 4 or more and play yourself a mini wildcard, for instance
        Ranks update in real-time
Scoring system is slightly more stats based
        No chips
        No "effective" ownership (yuck)
You can actually win decent prizes
And best of all - no content creators

It's always been my 2nd team and never really give it much attention, but without FPL I'll probably get stuck into it this season (if I play at all).

The rules of comps can vary slightly, so always check - i.e. some have a "safety net" that means your non-starters get replaced by next cheapest player in same team and position which adds another little bit of variety.

Transfers do roll up but I like the fact that hits are more likely to pay off in their format.
Player scoring seems to have a higher floor and lower ceiling, no BAPs which I think is so much better as BAPs are just points for getting points.
Effective ownership is still a thing but it's hidden until the game goes live in week one, which is good enough.

The content creators still exist but nobody cares or they aren't loud enough (yet).
And yes no chips and only no stupid seasons with 3 wildcards. It's just a better game format - it should have taken off by now though.

Yes it is very good, very refreshing how it has not been analysed to death, and more players are viable in their scoring system, especially some of the cheaper midfielders that nearly always play Ninety minutes.

Then how can they review it? Apparently they can and do

No that’s just a message. Nothing gets reviewed and nobody knows who deleted it which is why you’ll get no admission of a mistake. That’s how it was unless it’s been updated, which let’s face it, is unlikely.

                  What message?

Geoff has said that he looks through the deleted comments whenever he logs on to check standards of moderation and see what's been going down. Granted, that was a couple of years ago, and I don't believe it happens all the time now (if it ever did), but it suggests it's possible unless he was bending the truth.

I’m not saying he’s bending the truth, I wouldn’t know. The message I’m referring to is when it says your comment is up for review. That’s what I thought you were talking about.

Right. You get that message when your post is auto-filtered, and never posted. I'm talking about when a mod deletes a post or thread, for which there is no message. You do get a message if you are suspended, but it only quotes the text you're being suspended for, and not the reason, which also sucks.

Perhaps you would agree that mods should just remove the posts that they are sure break the T&Cs - not the whole thread. That is certainly possible; it happens all the time. And they should be able to give reasons to prevent future offences and give a sense of fairness instead of frustration and injustice. And they should be able to review and reinstate rather than obliterating content from the internet.

I'm so bored of this crap, I'm emailing to cancel my membership. It's the final straw of a massive haystack. Not going to help fund this anymore, at least not directly.

No I agree. Unless I missed something there wasn’t anything on that discussion that could warrant it being deleted. If you delete the opening post it deletes the whole thread. At least that used to be the case. What would’ve been sensible would be to give a reason for deletion or at least an apology if a mistake had been made. We all make mistakes from time to time after all. Instead you’ve now got a regular poster deciding not to renew membership.
It’s a shame the way things are. I don’t post here anymore but when I think back to what this community once was it such a shame and could all have been so easily avoided. I won’t bother going into it. They don’t like criticism. It is what it is.

Nobody knows. It's quite a shame for you that you don't get to see the replies to your post. And a shame for anyone else who contributed. There was nothing offensive or personal written, so I don't know.

Any thoughts on Onana as a potential breakthrough 5th mid if he comes in 5.0 or under?

Others may disagree of course. As far as fpl goes though I’d always want to see the evidence first before jumping on board. Don’t want to be stuck with a 5.0 mid you can’t swap and have to waste a transfer on.

Proper working class. None of this poncy Inter Milan at the Pepsi Stadium in Orlando.
