    ARSENAL
I've been following the friendlies to see how Arteta's tactics are evolving and how he'll deploy his personnel.
I can see what he's trying to do with Havertz, but the more I see, the more I feel he's a bit of a liability. He can only play as a #10 and never drops deep into the #8 role. This means Odegaard has to do more than his fair share, making him less appealing as an FPL asset. Trossard can do what Arteta wants, and possibly ESR can too, making Havertz a bit of an unnecessary signing.
Nevertheless, Arteta has to persist with him for a while at least. Trossard has got a lot of time in these friendlies and looks too good not to use. Ideally, Trossard would start and Havertz sit on the bench, but as I say, Arteta won't do that at the beginning of the season. That means Martinelli is adversely if unfairly impacted. Thus, I've made the decision to drop Martinelli from my squad and have a defender as my 3rd Arsenal asset. If either Martinelli or Trossard do get regular starts and long minutes, I'll bring them in later.

Agree. With CL they’re going to need all three and rotate all three. Martinelli is definitely not nailed.

I think Arteta is going to try and evolve with the bigger squad. He got found out last season, couldn’t adapt tactically to problems like Saliba. I think we’ll see different line ups home and away and dependent on opponent.

Trossard can play as a 9 / false 9 too, so he may impact Jesus as well. We didn't see it much last season but he's probably the most similar option to Jesus that they have in terms of movement dropping deep as well as linking up

Jesus isn't even nailed and is not a great FPL asset. Just Saka for me as I prefer other defender options at the start as well.

Had Martinelli nearly all 9f last season, never had Saka once.

This season starting with Saka and Martinelli on the watch list. Too much competition on the left side now.

From what I can see Havertz has been the deepest midfielder other than Rice or Partey when they've played.

I think as far as the left wing goes it's Martenelli or Trossard competing for that starting position. There's other attacking options too but they'll be benched.

Jesus, Saka and Ødegaard all look clear first choices in their positions.

Another observation I'd like to make is that almost every player not only has high-quality cover, but is learning at least 2 roles. There is one exception - one player who always starts and doesn't vary his role and that's Saka. That's why he's the only nailed asset in my draft bar Haaland, but the problem is Arteta is in trouble if he gets injured or loses form. Assuming Pepe isn't restored ( 😉 ), that's a risk.

          Fair play.

I guess hybrid players in midfield and inverting defenders to add extra bodies into midfield with the ball is all the rage.

What's really interesting is other clubs have one fullback who can invert, but Arsenal can do it on both sides, even in-game.
They've got Timber who not only can play a hybrid RCB/RB/inverted RB, but Arteta's using him as an LB/inverted LB! Tomiyasu can play hybrid CB/FB on both sides, White can play RCB/RFB/inverted RFB. Incredible stuff. That's why I'd go with Gabriel/Saliba who are not versatile but are more nailed. Mind you, he tried Kiwior as LRB/LB/inverted LB too!
So his starting defenders can invert from the left, switch to the right, play orthodox or both invert. Or he can change it via subs. It will be a nightmare for opposing managers to prepare a match against Arsenal.

Very useful and well thought out insights, Andy, thanks for sharing. I guess Arteta must see something in Havertz that he is not currently showing. I agree that he will most likely persist with his new signing and start him early doors. They have kind enough fixtures for it not to be too much of a risk if it doesn’t work.

    Areola
    Gabriel - Shaw - Stones - Estupinan
    Salah - Saka - Bruno - Bowen
    Haaland - Jackson

Only comment is never a fan of starting with someone new to the league, and Jackson has had a strong preseason.

For me, both Jackson and Hojland lack sufficient previous gametime and will need time to adapt. that's why I'm sticking with Rashford and Nkunku.

            • 14 Years

I wouldn't have Hojlund for a while, but Jackson has had a full (and productive) preseason. Though if Nkunku is on penalties, it might be worth finding 0.5 somewhere to upgrade to him. If I could trust any of Brighton's midfielders to be nailed on, Bowen could become one of them, I suppose.

I've only, in my most recent draft, brought Mitoma in. Brighton look exciting, but he is the only attacker I'm sure will be a regular starter.

Mitoma is the biggest concern in the MF for me, honestly, after the new guy hit the ground running. I've had him for most of the preseason and I might switch to him again, but not without a bit of bum-clenching.

I’ve got Mitoma getting rid of him after gw3 as fixtures turn as plenty of options in midfield.
Regarding Hojlund depending on price think I might go with him as currently on no utd players

Yeh, I'm starting with Estup and mitoma for their fixtures, but am very open to ditching them early door depending on early form. Also by that time some mids I'm keeping an eye on will have data to make decisions on - Slobby is the one who most excites me, Trossard too if he claims a starting spot.

Keep going back to thinking Alverez is going to have a major season for Man City this season?

With Mahrez gone, and Gundogan does that not free up a space for Alverez on the right and/or behind Haalaand?

He probably doesn't start in attacking midfield as first choice.

If Man City don't sign a replacement on the right wing then he's got an opportunity there.

Not offensively no - Pep can use Kovacic to ensure midfield dominance and still have the firepower to supply Haaland. I can see him using Kov in enough games to make owning Foden or Alvarez frustrating, as it is every year.

Trippier has atrocious opening fixtures and is now overpriced. I will never trust a Chelsea wingback again as long as I live. Mbeumo and Watkins are alright, but not at the expense of Salah. Put plainly, I am not seeing good value in (A) for dropping Salah.

          Disagree

Chelsea have LIV whu LUT NFO

From an attacking perspective, that’s pretty darn good, 3 home games

          Compare that to Villa

          new EVE bur liv

Only 1 home game, Newcastle defensively strong, dyche now in charge of Everton

Pool admittedly isn’t great however Chelsea will no doubt concede and BOU is plum,

Of course, .5 more expensive but nailed. Watkins was awesome for me last yr and will no doubt feature at some point, for me I can’t see chelsea not starting without nkunku, likely on pens with fixtures that get better and better. Pool I’m just not interested in till more information is provided but I don’t think many are

I agree that Watkins is being overlooked as is Isak and others an Newcastle. I think both Villa and Newcastle will be good this season and have some good value picks. I get the fixture argument but picking players from teams you think will do well and also enjoy watching has it's merits.

352 is so rigid like last years 532, where will people use transfers?

You’re not going to rush off United or Arsenal mids if they bang, so it’ll be a 6.5 mid slot you’ll play with, not very exciting.

At least with 3 strikers you have 2 striker spots to chase form and fixs with.

Morning all, less than two weeks to go now! First RMT of the summer …

    Flekken (Strakosha)
    TAA Gabriel Estupinan (Baldock) (Bell)
    Saka Fernandes Foden Maddison (Nakamba)
    Haaland Jesus Jackson

Weak bench? Quite fancy Diaby at Villa so weighing up downgrading TAA to Stones/Shaw, upgrade Nakamba to Diaby, leaving £0.5m in the bank or to upgrade to a £4.5m defender (AWB?)

Concerns over minute's , would feel more comfortable going with him if i had a decent 5.5 mid If he's nailed though then it's not a concern. It's a fun pick though, I'm currently on Watkins as nailed and Villa's talisman and also been good in pre season.

    A) or B) please

    A (3-4-3)
    Onana | Areola
Stones | Gabriel | Estupian (Baldock, Beyer)
Saka | Mbeumo | Bruno | Radford (Enciso)
    Haaland | Darwin | Watkins

    B (3-5-2)
    Onana | Areola
Stones | Gabriel | Estupian (Baldock, Beyer)
    Saka | Mbeumo | Bruno | Radford | Ødegaard
    Haaland | Darwin (Vinicius)

Dilemma is both Ødegaard and Watkins hit 15 goals and 8 assists each last season - which one has the greater possibility of achieving similar this year.

    A) potentially gives me a better bench

Ødegaard is a superb pick and strong option.

Good to have a differential in the team.

Most on here will say Saka, Gabriel and Jesus but there's others including Trossard and Martenelli and Saliba, Timber etc.who will all score points as well.

Just had a read of a best 11 thread on the Brighton forum and even more confused now about who their best picks are!
They have so many good options in midfield and up top but will rotate a lot due to European games. Now less keen on Enciso and think Pedro/Ferguson worth a punt if going with a strong squad. Mitoma over the season should still be good value but again won't play every game.

Until today, I felt one was enough because without a striker, I felt they won't score too many goals. Now Hojlund is joining, it's still late in the day to integrate him and I still think they won't be prolific enough early door to justify 2 (or even 3) attackers.

I'm guessing Kane is on his merry way which is a shame because surely Maddison would otherwise have had a chance of creating a new world record for assists if he had him to pass the ball to him instead of useless types like Iheanacho, Daka and Grandpa Vardy.

    1. Andy_Social

Kane has been heavily involved in preseason, meaning if he's leaving, the squad is underprepared to start the season, whether or not they bring in an inferior striker. Best avoid all assets to begin with.

If Kane were to stay at Spurs, would you pick him?

Or be tempted by Maddison or Kulusevski etc?

Perhaps Son is the one to the fore if Kane departs in terms of goal involvement and focal point.

Well you say "stay". The transfer window closes after GW2, so it's a risk to start him in your GW1 squad for 2 tricky fixtures only to lose him before BOU(h) rolls around.
