B but it depends on your attitude to transfers. I wouldn't want Porro after the first 2 so would go B to avoid booking in transfers.

Mepham not in penultimate friendly squad, perhaps a move on the cards? Real? Barca? Perth Glory?

Which to go for in the first 3 gameweeks? (Nkunku to come in gw2 onwards)

    1) Eze + Rogers (Rogers benched gameweek 2)
    2) Eze + Schade (Schade benched gameweek 2)
    3) Mbeumo + Amad (Mbeumo benched gameweek 2, transfer in Eze for Mbeumo Gameweek 4)

Overall I like it. I'm not massive on Konsa though, and just beware that Hudson-Odoi was benched in Forest's last friendly. It has given me cold feet on him and I'm looking at other 5.5 midfielders now.

Initially it looks good but I reckon you should consider some Arsenal assets.

Salah and Trent (unclear if will to start GW1) seems like overkill.

Could Do TAA>Saliba CHO>Winks and pocket 2 mil to use elsewhere

Funnily enough, I was talking up White's merits a few days ago.

Some Spurs fans are so deluded. MANY are complaining about us trying to sign Solanke as for unknown reasons they think he is a donkey and the next Soldado.

The mind boggles. Solanke is a great signing IMO. He might not be the best striker in the world but he got 29 goals last season with Bournemouth. With the amount of chances Spurs make, you can expect him to probably have 20+ goal season for us.

Finally Spurs are doing the correct thing and trying to sign a proven PL striker but this goes over these peoples heads.

Crucially he is home grown. Nobody understands these rules but spurs have essentially 0 non home grown spots left and haven't been able to shift anyone yet. People say 'don't register player x' but that isn't actually an option.

I've seen some compare him to Watkins as a 'late bloomer' but that's ignoring the fact that Watkins has consistently scored more than 10 league goals since his debut Prem season (in which he scored 14). Before last season, Solanke hadn't even scored 10 league goals TOTAL in 65 games.

I do agree that there is some risk with Solanke. Before last season I did not rate him at all but he was a different beast. 65 mil is a lot but that’s what you have to pay for PL strikers

You could have got Toney for less, who would have easily guaranteed you 15-18 league goals a season for the next few years. Can't see Solanke doing that really, can you?

    6. The Tonberry
      • 2 Years

I know a few Spurs fans that actively wanted Kane out over the last few years as they suspected he wasn't good enough, not deemed to be a big game player, and felt there were better alternatives they believed they could sign.

I'm mixed on the Solanke signing as I would have preferred Toney. But Solanke is an improvement on Richarlison so I think it would be an improvement to the team as a whole.

      1. x.jim.x

Wanting Kane out is just crazy to me. It's like Barca fans begging Messi to leave.

        1. The Tonberry
          • 2 Years

It is crazy. I think it stems back to the CL final when Kane started when not 100% fit and some Spurs fans believe it was that decision that cost them and have grudged him ever since.

Kane was lambasted with the same criticisms that many non-Spurs fans have been saying in the past two years (penalty merchant, always dropping deep, not turning up for the big games etc). But for a team of Spurs's standing, there's no chance of them signing anyone with his goalscoring record

          1. x.jim.x
            • 11 Years
            1 year, 8 months ago

That decision was purely on Pochettino and was basically a lose/lose situation for him - bench Kane and they'd all be calling him for that too.

Kane's record in big games is pretty poor, but Spurs fans seem to have this inflated expectancy that they should be challenging for major honours all the time. That incredible team Poch assembled was almost a decade ago now and the club's been ran poorly ever since, with a revolving door of failed managers and big money flops.

Kane is a major reason why Spurs are even talked about in terms of regularly challenging for CL places - it's honestly mad how some wanted him out when A) the striker market is absolutely dead and B) the money would likely just be P'd up the wall anyway.

            1. The Tonberry
              • 2 Years
              1 year, 8 months ago

Don't disagree with any of that. If you're about to play the biggest game in the club's history, you go in with your best team. I don't grudge Poch or Kane for losing the CL final - we were massive underdogs and it's easy to forget that Liverpool were probably the best team in Europe for an 18 month spell surrounding that final. Spurs rode their luck even getting to the final.

Though that Poch team is the best Spurs side I've seen in my lifetime and really should have won at least something with the team they had. Far worse teams have ended up with a trophy in the bag.

I didn’t want Kane out but wasn’t bothered about him leaving tbh. Think he deserved a big move. He was a loyal servant to the club. He could be frustrating at times, but he still one of the best most complete forwards in the world. Just a big shame he couldn’t win anything with Spurs.

    xG vs G ratio:
Son exceeded his expected goals of 12.98 by 4.02, scoring 17 goals.
Palmer exceeded his xG of 17.83 by 4.17, scoring 22.
Foden exceeded xG of 11.31 by 7.69, scoring 19.

on the other hand we have:
Darwin underperforming xG of 19.19 by -8.19, scoring 11 goals.
Jackson underperforming xG of 19.86 by -5.86, scoring 14.
Brennan Johnson underperforming xG of 12.17 by -7.17, scoring 5.

Notably Haaland and Salah underperformed by -4.65 and -3.94 respectively.

What do you make of these stats?
While the fluidity of a football game makes the underlying reasons far more complex, I often interpret underperformes as bad finishers, Darwin's playing style for example is sometimes even forcing a shot from a very tight angle, which is also taken into account by the xG calucaltions but such an underperformance means he must be wasteful. Even Haaland's 2023-24 season was far less fruitful than the previous one, despite a very similar total of xG (32.76 vs 31.65). On the other hand significant overperformers like the three above are also not the best of picks as you feel this kind of overperfomance is likely unsustinable. For me personally, players with high xG and a similar amount of scored goals offer the best representation of their qualities and scoring potential.

So based on your submission, who would be your top 5 attacking recommendations?

My submission already says it's too complex - we need to look at non penalty xG, xA, number of shots, fitness, form and a number of other factors. But based on last season's xG + xA it's Haaland, Isak, Salah, Watkins, and Palmer.

We can also conclude that Nunez, Jackson and Calvert-Lewin were one of the crappiest executers.

Completely agree with your interpretation of these, but will add that I think it's most useful to look at non-penalty goals only, as pens tend to be completely random (especially when they seem to change the rules halfway through every season).

For example, Palmer scored 13 goals from 11 NPxG which still had him ahead of the likes of Son, Saka and Foden. I'd also say it's not unreasonable to believe that he's capable of putting up these numbers again, which I don't think can be said for the likes of Foden.

I agree - it's only guesswork which teams are going to get more penalties awarded. Those pen takers will rack up both goals and xG based on that, and those chances might perish next season.

I also agree with the Foden-Palmer comparison, Foden was massively overperforming. Similar overperformances remind me Capoue's 5 from 5 at the start of the season a couple of years ago with one shot in each of those 5 games, but still causing bangwagons that looked like Tokyo metro on a Monday morning.
Accessing and interpreting statistical data correctly is crucial.

Looking at past 3 years could give a better indication of whether a particular player was unlucky or is a poor finisher.

Son for instance, I think he will overperform xG in most of the years since he is a pretty good finisher. Salah/Haaland can be classed as unlucky since I would guess they have been overperforming xG in previous years.

Kane, Salah, and now Haaland have been consistent not only in scoring but in consistently racking up high totals of expected goals every season. These players are not only good finishers but also dominate games with the amount of chances they manage to create for themselves. At some point (xG: 30) I believe it gets hard to chase your own xG.

Pretty happy with this squad and only couple of changes since last week, looks overall beautiful.

    Leno
    Gvardiol, Porro, Munoz
    Salah, Son, Odegaard, Gordon, Bailey
    Isak, Solanke

    Bench: Senesi, Jebbison, Harwood

Brave to go without Haaland but a nice team all the same

Like Bailey. Not sure if Gordon starts.
Odegaard hasn't done anything in preseason. Very frustrating to own and catch his hauls.
Solanke will be eased in. Hendo over Leno.

Honestly don't like it. Don't mind it Holmes

I too am overtinkered, but it feels like just a case of largely shuffling those .5s about as we're pretty much there in terms of structure

I’m not convinced by the cheaper forwards this year - not sure on the right 5.5 mid but the options seem better.

Burn and Konsa can be any NEW/AVL defender depending who starts

    Henderson // Matthews
Gvardiol Gabriel Burn // Konsa Faes
    Salah Gordon Nkunku Bailey Andreas
    Haaland Isak // Jebbison

    Best 6.5 M (besides Nkunku):
    A. Grealish
    B. Bailey
    C. Szoboszlai
    D. Gibbs-White

    Best 5.5 M:
    1. Andreas
    2. Smith Rowe
    3. McNeil
    4. Semenyo
    5. Kamada
    6. Bank 0.5 and go with Rogers

Throw in Murphy, Elliott and Brereton Diaz for 5.5m. The former two have had a great pre-season.

From memory Murphy started the final 12 games of last season. Presumably Newcastle will buy another RW but until that happens I reckon Murphy starts the first three or four fixtures (ahead of Almiron). I'm taking a punt on him, he's less than 1% owned. Has 4 goals and 3 assists in pre-season.

Brereton Diaz averaged 4.4 pts per match last year in one of the worst teams ever to play in the PL. That's better than most 6.5m options and not too far off Bruno Fernandes at 4.7m ppm. He's also in my team and less than 1% owned.

Elliott has apparently been Liverpool's best player in pre-season. There's plenty of competition for places in Liverpool's attack but he's looking good to start the season. Always been a talent and could potentially take the next step if he starts the season well.

There's also the likes of Bobb and Amad at 5m who have been excellent in pre-season and looking likely to start the first couple of fixtures.

I guess the Solanke transfer kills my Kulusevski punt. Probably for the best.

Thoughts on this Salah and Haaland draft:

    Flekken

    Porro Guehi Mykolenko

    Salah Nkunku ESR Bruno

    Haaland Havertz Solanke

    Bench: Henderson, Quansah, Winks, Faes

I was but I'm backing out of it I think. It looked good with Salah but I don't feel comfortable not having Haaland and haven't been able to build a BB squad I really like with him in it.

Interestingly foden & palmer can start as Salah & gordon too

All about those interchangeable price points

At least until the prices change

Raya only got 6 bonus last season and of course, hardly any saves, which given the BPS changes might actually be a decent thing

for 150-160 and not needing to transfer I think that's pretty solid

I've had terrible goalkeepers in recent years. Nightmare. Bachmann, Ward/Iversen and managed to WC just as Ward bizarrely went on a run

last year, people had similar experiences with Pickford/Areola

in terms of Arsenal slots, I think the only attackers that appeal are Saka/Odegaard, otherwise it's defensive assets
