The write up for the final games of preseason are SO important. Dyche let slip once that the line ups are going to be pretty much the same for the opening game of the season. There's no one better to guide you through these games and tell you what's what than Neale. Hope he gets today's and tomorrow's games as well.

Howe, man. I know it is all about fine margins in the premier league but to split Newcastle's final preseason game into 2 like that just to get a slight advantage ... What a headshaker.

It's the same as last season. The goal is to get run out for all the first team squad. The sponsors and fans who paid for tickets would probably be unhappy if it was a clear first team and second team on different days.

Most teams this weekend are only playing once. They could all do what Howe does and throw a couple of team news red herrings but they don't. Seems a little unsportsmanlike to me.

The games were about player fitness and giving the home fans a chance to see their team in preseason. It's not about putting other teams off the scent to how you will play when the league starts.

I think you're trying to read far too much into it, as your only concern is trying to work out the starting lineup for GW1.

Did you see Eddie Howe on the Gary Neville podcast? He scrambled all the magnetic counters on the tactics whiteboards in the interview room in order not to give anything away. This was clearly deliberate.

Not showing tactics is a bit different to splitting your players into two teams for a two day event for your fans.

Slot’s doing the same tomorrow. I mean I think you’re right about Howe but post Euros/Copa hols there’s a lot of players needing competitive minutes. Can’t all fit in one team.

He's just not a very good keeper is he? In their defence if you'll pardon the play on words they had a lot of injuries throughout to the rear guard which won't have helped but they conceded the most goals at home out of all the clubs who remained in the league (only slightly less than Luton I'll add) and it wasn't as if they were loads better on the road either. The whole season was a disaster obviously but there was a lot of mitigating factors not least Toney missing half a season and Mbuemo getting a significant injury. I think they'll be a lot better this season but Flekken is still not the one for me.

Is it crazy not to go with Nkunku?

He was one of the first players I picked when making by first draft as he’s clearly seriously underpriced & his pre season minutes / form have only strengthened my belief in his value. However, I suddenly find myself tempted not to start with him as I really love this midfield:

    Salah / Saka / Son / B Fernandes / ESR

Despite his popularity (don’t recall seeing a single draft on here without him) he’s still only 18% owned overall, so has the potential to see significant price rises if I move for him later.

    Thoughts?

He hasn't been in my drafts. I haven't watched every minute of their preseason, but with so many guys firing below his price point and so many proven assets just above the price point I don't understand why he has to be in for City GW1. Some nice positions I suppose but half or majority of returns have been pens too. I'm comfortable with not going with him and having that be one of the ways to differentiate from a lot of the community

    You could honestly go with:

    -ESR/Rogers
    -Bobb
    -J. Pedro

and rotate them. When Bobb gets dropped bring in Carvalho or downgrade him to fodder.

    1. Sir Michael Taker

You could easily get a week where none of them play for starters which is part of the conundrum.

That's where substitutes come in. Pretty sure Bobb starts GW1 at least.

Carvalho could be a starter, we'll see.

ESR, Brereton Diaz & Pedro should get a lot of minutes. If you want to play it safe, go with those 3.

    Quansah - Livramento - Hall
    Salah - Saka - Fernandes - Jota

Light defence, but pretty convinced they’ll all start GW1.

I really like it to be honest. Personally not a huge fan of the double Newcastle defence, but could get you off to a flyer in GW1!

Refreshing not to see Nkunku in a draft too. Love that you’ve gone for Minteh, who I’m very tempted by (currently on ESR myself)

ESR was initially in my draft instead of Minteh, but I can’t see myself dropping any of that front 7 for the first two gameweeks. GW4 & GW5 is when Minteh does the damage

          That’s a great point.

Are you confident on Jota’s minutes? I think he’s a great pick and likely locked in for the first few GWs, but Liverpool have so much attacking talent I do fear he could be subject to rotation after that.

I guess you can address that later though if needed.

          1. adstomko
            • 10 Years

I do slightly fear that come GW4 or so. I'm backing Jota to soak up the pressure and potentially be the top scoring player come end of GW5. If he doesn't deliver, I'll likely swap him for Gordon, Solanke to Darwin/Gakpo, and Livramento to another 4.5m DEF (if I manage to save the transfers come GW5)

      2. Sir Michael Taker
        • 12 Years

Slightly concerned about Newcastle's fixtures defensively. They were markedly better at home than away last season but after Southampton the next few home games are Spurs, Man City, Brighton (which is ok) and then Arsenal. Its enough to put me off any off their defenders early doors unless I can find a good rotation or evidence they won't be shipping goals for fun on the road. And I don't think its one of those weird things without any substance either, they won 18 games last season but only 6 of them on the road.

        1. adstomko
          • 10 Years

I think Pope coming back is massive for them, even more so if Guehi signs of course.
I don't see any better attacking 4.5m/5m defenders available. I think Newcastle could finish 3rd this season. Plus, Konsa & Davis can play instead from GW3-9ish

          1. Sir Michael Taker
            • 12 Years
            2 years, 27 days ago

I agree about Newcastle being back in the top 4. Can't see them above Liverpool myself but that 4th spot is well within their grasp. Pope is back that is true. Only thing I would say and this shouldn't influence your thinking ahead of gameweek 1 or possibly at all as its too deep and beyond our control but long-term, he's had problems with his shoulders previously. It happened to him in 2018 too for Burnley. You think about that part of the body and I'd imagine once its happened once you are at a much higher risk of it repeating when you are a professional athlete diving around and colliding with people.

Palace often tight at the back, especially at home so I’d get Andersen, or maybe Mykolenko.

Wasn’t even in the squad for the game against Dortmund today apparently. Not sure why but doesn’t bode well for GW1.

I had my original team I picked when the game came out but I've tinkered with it probably every day since but I've never saved any of them for one reason or another. I almost certainly won't be going with the original team either, there were many issues with it which have emerged so it could be a busy week. They've done a good job with the pricing, too good for my liking otherwise I'd probably be set.

Indeed. Savinho will take time to learn 'Pep-ball' and Bilva might pop up in central midfield at times. Foden made CAM his own and probably 1st choice backup to Haaland as it stands. De Bruyne...starting to feel he's now an impact sub.

He's playing after today's performance. Classy goal. Amad was good too, it's Rashford who should be dropped. Expect Rashford Bruno Garnacho front three.

Reckon Man Utd’s forwards will be in constant rotation. Too risky to go with them if you ask me.

    Don't mind this.

    Mykolenko | Alexander-Arnold | Gvardiol | Robinson | Faes
    Eze | Bobb | Salah (C) | Nkunku | Smith Rowe
    Haaland | Isak | J. Pedro

Move Bobb to Carvalho, Rogers or downgrade him to a 4.5M after 1-2 GWs. Bench Pedro for GW1.
Bobb looks like an incredible player. Smith Rowe is playing so advanced and centrally I like him as a pick.

Which combo for the first 6 gw (don’t want to plan transfers on defenders)

    A. TAA and Munoz
    B. Gvardiol and Saliba
