Fantasy managers face arguably the trickiest test so far – who to captain this week in Blank Gameweek 5! Here, we assess the best Fantasy EFL Gameweek 5 captaincy candidates with our captaincy poll.

Stay tuned for further articles before Friday’s 20:00 BST deadline. For anything else you might need, check out our Gameweek 5 page.

THE CAPTAINCY POLL

% of votes in the Captain Poll

Luke Molyneux (Doncaster Rovers)25%
Adam Phillips (Barnsley)18.75%
Elliot Lee (Wrexham)12.5%
Jack Marriott (Wrexham)12.5%
Courtney Baker-Richardson (Newport County)12.5%

LUKE MOLYNEUX

Given the fixture postponements, it was never in doubt that Luke Molyneux (M) would comfortably lead the captaincy poll. Doncaster Rovers’ number seven secured another 19-point monster haul in Gameweek 4, scoring twice (+12) and assisting (+3) in their 3-2 away win at Port Vale.

This is the SECOND – you read that correctly – Gameweek where Molyneux has returned 19 points. With an overall 46 so far, he is currently Fantasy EFL’s highest scorer. The midfielder is up to 12.2% ownership and is only 0.4% ownership off Wrexham’s Paul Mullin (F).

Fantasy EFL Scout Squad: Gameweek 5

Doncaster Rovers face a tough challenge against Gillingham in their upcoming match. The unbeaten Gills have scored six goals and conceded only once, presenting a stern test for Grant McCann’s side. However, if Rovers are to secure their third consecutive win, Molyneux will likely play a crucial role.

ADAM PHILLIPS

Barnsley have gradually picked up momentum after suffering an opening-day League One loss, currently riding a three-match unbeaten streak. A standout performer for the Tykes has been Adam Phillips (M), whose exceptional display in Gameweek 4 saw him net a brace (+12) and put two shots on target (+2) against Crawley Town, earning a total of 15 points

The captaincy poll highlighted Phillips’ popularity, with 18.75% opting for the Tykes’ number eight. However, his 2.2% ownership is relatively low for a player who’s scored three goals (+18) in two games.

Barnsley host Bristol Rovers up next, who secured a strong 2-0 win over Cambridge United in Gameweek 4. Despite this, the Gas have struggled on the road, earning only one point from their two away outings. Given Phillips’ impressive performances, he could be a strong captaincy option.

ELLIOT LEE

Fantasy EFL: Gameweek 3 Scout Notes 5

Meanwhile, Wrexham’s Elliot Lee (M) has emerged as a popular armband contender among Fantasy EFL managers. Despite blanking at the weekend, the midfielder secured a 14-point haul in Gameweek 3 against Reading, scoring (+6) and setting up another (+3) in their 3-0 win. With a further assist (+3) secured in Gameweek 1, Lee is proving to be a creative force in League One.

The Red Dragons host Shrewsbury Town at the Racecourse Ground, looking to extend their unbeaten run to five. Despite the Shrews winning 3-0 last time out, they had a three-match losing streak before that. Many expect a strong Wrexham win, making Lee a leading name.

JACK MARRIOTT

Interestingly, some managers are opting for one of Lee’s team-mates for the armband – Jack Marriott (F). Some were sceptical in pre-season about how Wrexham would fare without Paul Mullin (F) due to an injury that prevented him from attending pre-season. Partnering Ollie Palmer (F), Marriott has stepped up by scoring twice (+10) and assisting once (+3) in four games.

Marriott was joint-third in the captaincy poll for Shrewsbury, receiving 12.5% of the votes. Despite having significantly lower ownership (2.3%) than Mullin (12.6%), we’re unsure if the latter will start this time, given his cameos off the bench so far. Therefore, it’s best to wait for team news to make an informed decision, as both players are good options depending on the starting line-up.

COURTNEY BAKER-RICHARDSON

Newport County’s Courtney Baker-Richardson (F) also secured 12.5% of poll votes and takes joint-third place – the first time he’s been on the leaderboard! As his team’s most selected player (2.6%), Baker-Richardson has been outstanding for the Exiles this season. So far, it’s three goals (+15) and one assist (+3) in four games, totalling 25 points.

They take on Port Vale at Rodney Parade, looking to extend their unbeaten run to four games. The Valiants have struggled defensively, conceding seven goals in their last two matches.

In the 2021/22 season, Newport swept Port Vale aside, winning both encounters 2-1. Fantasy EFL managers are backing Baker-Richardson to continue his goal-scoring form and deliver another victory.

On gw6 WC I think I'll want 3 of those and might have to lose Eze.

Nice short list today, Rainy can take a break from formatting dozens of price drops for a while perhaps.

There have been over 200 price falls from over 180 players already since the start of the season - indicating that choosing a low-owned player rather than a popular one does not insulate you from price drops.

However it looks like there's still no £3.9M or less defender or goalkeeper., no £4.4M or less forward, and only one £4.4M defender*.

Have an FT. Is Kamada a transfer out? Rest of my team bar Sels is fine, want to roll but have a sneaking feeling Kamada gets benched next game.

Have Hall vs Wolves on my bench, I think he could start again with Schar back.

    1. Ausman
      • 2 Years
      1 year, 6 months ago

I would almost guarantee Kamada starts on the bench. He flys to Japan to play on the 5th, then flies to Bahrain to play on the 10th, then makes his way back to London.
With Glasner being able to work with the newly acquired players over the IB the integrate them, I think the probability is high that Kamada is rested for one of the new guys.

While Rico plays Gvardiol isn't the attacking defender. Once Walker is back starting I'm hoping Gvardiol resumes that role, in the meantime Robertson makes more sense at £6M than Gvardiol.

Going back to last season, do we think it's fair to view Forest as a fixture as just below the Arsenal/City/Liverpool tier at this point from an attacking perspective? Obviously Liverpool and Brighton can get at them in 4 and 5, but I've been someone contemplating Salah/Diaz and Pedro/Welbeck double ups on WC. Maybe it's worth just starting with guys like Mbeumo and Havertz from 4 instead of booking in transfers in 6 if you view it from the standpoint of that everyone has one meh fixture in 4/5 (City for Mbeumo/Havertz).

I’m not getting Diaz for this very reason so it would be wrong to ignore it with Pedro, they have a lot of attackers, unless they are all away on International duty & in the same boat, it needs to be looked at.

Diaz will play a lot of minutes and their first game is in Peru. I'd be wary of that also. Gakpo can play. Pedro sitting on the bench for a couple of games isn't quite the same thing.

Just have a good 1st bench and hope he plays.

Will Wildcard GW6. What is the move?

    A) Saliba -> Trent
    B) Mykolenko -> Robertson

Depends on how many Arsenal you have. From GW6 you will need them.
Pool player values are about right so risk and reward.

Curious, anyone out there with both Salah and Haaland and still struggling slightly with OR Rank and Points? (Due to weak team elsewhere).

    1. Chris_l25

I've only just jumped on Salah but went with Haaland and Saka from GW1. I don't mind it for a short period (GW4 and 5) but I think you have to rely too heavily on the cheap enablers to keep scoring every week against the likes of Saka, Son, Mbuemo, Eze, Isak, Palmer etc

    2. MJF
      • 7 Years

Depends what you judge to be struggling?

Generally speaking option with Haaland and Salah payed off in GW3 due to fact that Palmer and Saka did not deliver. I have got both Salah and Haaland from the beginig but due to big haul of Palmer combined with lack of production of my inferior players in GW 2 I got 69 points what was average in that week. So, I still think that in long term having both of them may unviable.

I can't believe Watkins was awarded an assist for Villa's opener on the weekend. Ramsey did all the work, provided the cross, and if Watkins got a touch it was no more than a brush against his shoelace from the angle I saw. Comical when you think of some of the assists they haven't awarded over the years.

Not posted for a long time as not been FPL focused, but after a first ever strong start keen to hear anyone’s strategy suggestions given position. Early days and my WC team wont be as “live” as players doing it this week for sure

GW1 88 started without Haaland to attack GW1 to WC week 2.
GW2 93 WC ESR and Diaz picks worked well, Foden not so much!
GW3 92 Foden to Mbeumo decent move

    OR 3.1k

    `. Pope

    TAA. Mazraoui Gvardiol

    ESR. Rogers. Jota. Diaz

    Isak. JPed. Haaland C

Vald. Porro. Mbeumo Van den Berg

Thoughts appreciated! Current thinking is try and roll FTs to GW 6 and mini WC the fixture swing

2ft and 1.9itb. Thinking Saka + Gordon -> Salah + Mitoma. Don't really like my Fulham triple-up either but maybe it is ok to keep a few more weeks. Team would then be. Planning WC6 to triple up on Arsenal

    Henderson
    TAA Konsa Robinson
    Salah Eze Mitoma ESR
    Haaland Isak Muniz

    4.0; Porro, Winks, Barco

Robinson, Rico Lewis, Semenyo, Wood & Pedro.

These are the 5 I’m needing to be step up, Rico Lewis is a big worry but at that price, it’s worth the gamble, Wood’s stats support his early season form so I’m reluctant to sell him.

How would you improve on that bottom 5 for the similar money spent?
