With Gameweek 6 now behind us, the Fantasy EFL season is heating up as we fly through September. As Double Gameweek 7 looms, the EFL schedule ramps up with SIX League One teams doubling. To help fine-tune your team before the deadline, our in-house expert’s reveal their teams.
Sam H is sticking with a 1-2-3-1 formation, hoping for a better week than last. He said…
My Gameweek 6 return was the worst of them all so far, managing to secure only 37 points! My club picks, Reading and Sunderland, let me down. Both selections seemed like bankers, but Reading lost to Leyton Orient at home, who prior to the match had not secured any points. Sunderland lost 3-2 to Plymouth Argyle, despite the Black Cats being unbeaten and conceding just one goal before the game. I only secured two points from a possible 20… shocker!
The ‘mini’ Double Gameweek 7 has caused many changes to my team and I have targeted these sides for this week, doubling up on Wigan Athletic and Huddersfield Town assets. This correlates with my club picks of Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United.
GOALKEEPER
In between the sticks I have opted for Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle (G). The Latics face Lincoln City (A) and Stevenage back at the Brick Community stadium. Opting for this selection is to maximise the chance of a clean sheet bonus, but also save points. With 24 overall points, I’m expecting saves in both matches and a higher upside in playing two games, rather than one!
DEFENDERS
I have selected Mickey Demetriou (D) of Crewe Alexandra and Michal Helik (D) of Huddersfield Town. Demetriou has been scintillating to watch this season and has provided multiple double-digit displays in Fantasy EFL. Therefore, with a tie against Harrogate Town at home, he is likely to be influential and will be needed at the back to prevent their attackers, but can also pose a threat going forward. His defensive contributions so far this season have been incredible and he has been able to return a considerable 58 points overall.
Alongside him is the Terriers centre-back Helik. The vice-captain has been excellent for his side this season and provided ten points for his Fantasy backers in Gameweek 6 with a clean sheet (+5), four clearances (+2), two blocks (+1) and two tackles (+1). With the Terriers having two winnable fixtures in Gameweek 7, I’m expecting two clean sheets, and the upside of defensive and attacking bonuses. Therefore, he takes the armband for my side!
MIDFIELDERS
In the middle of the park, I have opted for a triple Double Gameweek threat. My second Wigan asset is Thelo Aasgaard (M), who has been incredible for his side so far this season, with two goals (+12) and one assist (+3) already to his name. With the Latics facing Lincoln City away from home and Stevenage at home, Aasgaard will likely be involved both defensively and offensively if they are to secure maximum points.
Alongside him is Huddersfield Town’s Ben Wiles (M). Wiles has posed an attacking threat this season, but it has also been his defensive efforts that have allowed his Fbackers to make progress. The midfielder returned nine points in Gameweek 6 when his side put four past Bolton Wanderers (A). The number eight contributed with one of the goals (+6), while he also managed two key passes (+2) and played 80 minutes of the match (+2). With matches against Northampton Town and Blackpool both in front of the Terriers faithful, I have full belief that Wiles will be pivotal in Gameweek 7 and return a substantial number of points.
My final midfield pick is Peterborough United’s Kwame Poku (M). The Posh have had a mediocre start to the campaign, currently sat in 11th position, securing seven points from a possible 15. Despite the lacklustre form, Poku has shone, scoring three goals (+18) in five appearances. With matches against Bristol Rovers (H) and Leyton Orient (A), I have no doubt Poku secures his second double-digit return this campaign.
FORWARD
Leading the line for me this week will be WBA’s Josh Maja (F). The Baggies remain unbeaten and lead the Championship. There is no doubt that the talisman will cause major problems for the Plymouth Arygle defence, who have conceded nine goals in five games. With five goals (+25) and one assist (+3), I expect Maja to score at least his sixth of the season.
CLUB PICKS
My club picks echo my player selection this week, backing two sides with Double Gameweeks. The first one being Peterborough United and the second being Huddersfield Town. There is no doubt that the Terriers can secure the maximum 18 points from two home wins (+10), 2+ goals scored (+4) and clean sheets (+4), especially with extremely winnable matches against Northampton Town and Blackpool.
The same goes for Peterborough United. Targeting their game against the O’s (A) was inevitable, but became even more inticing when the Double Gameweek was announced! If the Posh can secure the away win (+7), 2+ goals (+2) and clean sheet (+2), an 11-point haul could be on the cards. The maximum points available here is 20 for Peterborough with one home and one away tie.
With a total of 38 points up for grabs, I don’t see why at least 25 is realistic for my club picks. Bring on the Double Gameweeks!
