On International Women’s Day, FPL Family’s Sam gives us a special ‘pre-match preamble’ talking about her own experiences of working in the football sector and this year’s message: Accelerate Action.

Often people ask me what it’s like to be the only woman on the core team at Fantasy Football Scout. My answer is always that I never really notice. Here, my gender doesn’t matter. My team are so supportive and we work together to achieve our goals. Gender lines don’t come into it.

I am well aware that I am very lucky. This is not the case for all women, especially in the football world.

Earlier this season, I stood on stage at the Football Content Awards and accepted the Hall of Fame award on behalf of the Scout team. My first thought after accepting the award and walking off stage was, “My gosh, how incredible for my children to see me do this”.

I knew both would be so proud to see the trophy sitting on my bookcase in my office the next morning (no Spurs jokes please!). But even more deeply than this, I thought about my daughter. How I hope my achievements inspire her. How I hope they make her chase her goals that little bit harder. My son is unlikely to be faced with glass ceilings; I want my daughter to believe that she won’t be either. Being a parent, my children’s happiness is the most important thing. Creating a world where they can achieve anything is so important.

Working with Spurs

When I first started making content with Lee as FPL Family, my brother-in-law asked me where I wanted this to take me. My response: working with Spurs.

This was a dream that I thought more about standing in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium accepting that award. I took myself out into the bowl that night and I sat all on my own thinking one day maybe they’ll notice I exist!

International Women's Day 2025 1

Just ahead of the Gameweek 27 match between Spurs and Man City, I got a phone call that I always hoped would come.

Last year on International Women’s Day, one of my friends was pivotal in the establishment of the Women of the Lane (WOTL) supporters group. WOTL is the first Spurs supporters group for women and people who define themselves as non-binary.

WOTL aims to bring women fans of the Spurs men’s team together to enhance the matchday experience. The group provides a touchpoint for fans to meet up on matchdays, watch games together and connect online. When Bee told me about the group, I knew this was an organisation I wanted to be part of.

Through WOTL, the Spurs Official Content Team reached out and we produced a video around my match day experience. As part of the video, I went pitch side, met a Spurs legend and recorded my in-game reactions.

Creating content with Spurs was a life goal. The reaction of my children when I was sending photos and videos home on the night made this mean even more to me than I originally thought it would.

Accelerate Action

This year’s International Women’s Day message is Accelerate Action.

The aim of this campaign is to highlight the importance of swift steps to increase momentum and urgency in addressing the personal and professional barriers facing women.

At the current rate of progress for gender equality, it will take until 2158 to reach full gender parity. That is roughly five generations – my daughter’s great-granddaughter’s generation.

Creating parity is something that we should all be looking to accelerate around the world. Be that in our homes, on the sports fields or in our places of work.

Since the first women’s recorded game was played in May 1881, things have progressed massively. Women’s football is now selling out big international stadiums, female pundits and commentators are becoming more commonplace, and ordinary women like me are achieving things that I wouldn’t have dreamed possible sitting in the stands at Spurs 30 years ago.

Pushing for parity and accelerating action will only ever be a positive thing for all. Hopefully by pushing to accelerate the action our daughters will have access to the same opportunities as our sons, and we won’t have to wait five generations to see parity.

To chase ML rivals is it worth going the non-Haaland route? Less hits and Marmoush could do just as good

If you roll this week you'll only be trading him out down 0.1 or 0.2 next week anyway right?

So may as well do it now and bench Kluivert I think?

I prefer Wissa to Marmoush this week, but prefer Marmoush over the next 5, so would probs go Marmoush personally.

What an absolutely brilliant article. So refreshing to read. It's a shame most of the comments on it will be about pre deadline RMTs and A or B questions. We need more content like this because big FPL is very male dominated and some people don't take women seriously when they have an opinion on football.

Tell your friends. Tell ten men. And then they will tell ten men to tell ten men to tell ten men. It sounds like the sort of song you'd sing on a coach trip, but it's actually true!

'supporters group for women and people who define themselves as non-binary'........Because males are not included! If I started a, 'Male only group', then that would be frowned upon too by the same people who are supporting this..... I just do not like the fact that anyone is treated unequal 'cos of race, gender etc. By all means make sure that everyone has an equal chance, but don't then discriminate by using 'positive' discrimination.

Because men aren’t a marginalised group despite what knuckledraggers like Andrew Tate might tell you! Just a read of this thread will tell you why they need as much help as possible.

Can’t do something nice for a group of people without insecure selfish boomers crying about discrimination, as if straight white men haven’t won the social lottery.

            Woke is madness.
DEI is madness, when I go to have heart surgery I want to be handled by the people best qualified for the job not by someone who’s there because they are DEI hire.

I’m against injustice, I feel that in every area of life people should be judged on merit only.
            Equal opportunities - yes.
Divisive ideology (BLM, woke, DEI) - no.

You should educate yourself on the benefits of diversity in thinking and ideas. I recommend reading a book such as Rebel Ideas or Invisible Women.

Also traditional criteria for hiring someone best qualified for the job often does not mean the best person gets hired for the job and misses candidates who are often overlooked due to the narrow criteria - this is what diversity quotas are designed to improve. Lastly, equal opportunities under traditional, often narrow, criteria does exactly the opposite - again something diversity quotas help to make the opportunities more equal and improve the hiring process. Not ideal but a sticking plaster until the inherent system changes to be more fair.

                Discussing ideas is one thing.
Real life situations in which you require certain abilities is something else.
Let’s look at recent fires in California (as woke state as it can be) - deputy chief of the fire department (overweight dei hire woman) said that if she couldn’t carry you out of the fire it’s your fault for getting yourself in trouble in the first place.
For her it’s more important that the responded „looks like” the person who needs help - madness.

                Divisive and dangerous.

A world where privileged lying rich grifters like Trump and Boris Johnson somehow get control over countries is arguably far more dangerous.

Having mechanisms to try and give opportunities those that otherwise wouldn't get them, is surely a good thing? Sure criticise and call for refining of those mechanisms seems fine, but demonising the idea behind them seems a bit odd to me.

If she said that then it's very inappropriate and reflective of her poor attitude but not the principle of needing diversity. In any job having someone with relevant experience and background can help you identify opportunities and threats more quickly and respond more appropriately. In your example, having a person who can better relate to the person who needs help, who might be able to identify significant details that someone without a similar background might miss, will improve the performance of the team overall.

I hope you're not the type who thinks they know more than the people who actually studied, researched and worked all their lives in these industries. Diversity is widely accepted to be needed in most industries and considered best practice hence why organisations have been slowly trying to implement it.

I don’t suffer from Dunning-Kruger effect, and I accept that to have a full academic debate on the subject I would need to educate myself.

My point though remains - we need a society in which everyone have equal access to education and opportunities and in which everyone is judged purely on the merits.

The more often we talk about race, gender, sexual orientation- the longer these criteria remain divisive.

When you look at me you should see a human being not a white, straight far right extremist 🙂
Equally when I look at people I want to see their energy, what they’re about and what value they can bring to me\organisation\world. No who they’re sleeping with.

Fair play for acknowledging that you need to educate yourself. We should have more of this but instead many are deeply entrenched in their views, think they know best and are intolerant when it comes to hearing a different viewpoint. This applies to any divisive subject - religion, Brexit etc.

A lot of hate in society comes from irresponsible politicians who know which emotive subjects to create narratives around. They know which buttons to press in order to create division and hate and get people fighting with each other. Self serving politicians who are just out for themselves.

Positive discrimination is only discrimination if you assume the starting point is balanced. I think everyone agrees that balance is what we what. The misunderstanding is assuming that is where we currently are.

I work in an industry where knowledge of the latest football scores helps grease the wheels of commumication. It has nothing to do with competency to do the job, and we can all agree that we need to work to avoid this being core to hiring processes. Yes its positive discrimination, but not to a position of being discriminatory, to a position of balance

Treat everyone with respect, from the person on the street to the top of the elite, if that person proves they aren't worthy, so be it.

As for opportunities, give everyone the same opportunity to succeed, if that person is worthy on merit, then they've earned the right.

No one disagrees that meritocracy is the end goal. The question is how we get to such a place whilst such inequality and bias exists.

I just got called posh because I can use the english language. Bias clearly exists and upsets an uncontrolled meritocracy

      This is for GW29:
0.1 short of Palmer, TAA and Gakpo -> Haaland, Kluivert and Gvardiol due to Palmer’s price drop tonight.

      1) Do Robinson -> Ait-Nouri (-4) also to afford it? (means 11players in GW29). (also have to play Castagne in GW29)

      2) Do Palmer, TAA and Gakpo -> Haaland, Kluivert and Ait-Nouri (means 11 players in GW29)

      3) Do Palmer, Gabriel and Gakpo -> Haaland, Kluivert and Ait-Nouri (means 10 players in GW29)

Will have rolled into 3FT for BGW29)

      TAA, Timber, Munoz (Greaves, Hall)
Salah (C), Palmer, Mbeumo, Kluivert (Dango)
      Wood, Beto, Isak

      BGW29 plan:
      TAA to Cresswell
      Hall to N. Williams
      Palmer to Bruno
      Beto to Haaland (-4)

      WC 31.

Wouldn't you be better off keeping Beto for 29 since he has a fixture? Especially for -4. Can't you just swap Isak for Haaland?

Cheers. Jury was still out on Haaland move, so yes i could keep Beto just that extra week and then get Haaland, but funds are tight with price rises. 0.2 bank to make all desired moves. That said, I could sell Bruno after LEI for funds, but I'd also have got different defenders in that case.

My main ML rival has Salah captain and Isak,Wissa strikers, same as me.

Should I captain Palmer and do Beto > Isak to gain on him?
