They have seen their manager leave, sold penalty-taking talisman Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m), club captain Christian Norgaard (£5.5m) and goalkeeper Mark Flekken, and harbour a 19-goal striker, Yoane Wissa (£7.5m), who doesn’t want to play for them any more. Are Brentford now a team to avoid in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

The Bees are the focus of our first 2025/26 FPL team preview.

In this team guide, we’ll be looking at the west Londoners’ best FPL picks for the upcoming campaign. We’ll also take an early stab at their predicted line-up for Gameweek 1, look at the good and bad, assess the opening fixtures, detail their best players for defensive contributions (DC) and more.

BRENTFORD: REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

Best £4.5m FPL defenders for 2023/24

RETURNING PLAYERS + CONTINGENCY PLANS

The return of several first-teamers from injury is a positive. Big-money striker Igor Thiago (£6.0m) spent much of last season on the sidelines, as did hitherto first-choice full-back pairing Aaron Hickey (£4.0m) and Rico Henry (£4.5m). All have featured in pre-season.

And while the exodus might be alarming to outsiders, Brentford are from that same savvy school as Brighton and Hove Albion when it comes to contingency planning.

Yehor Yarmoliuk (£5.0m) has been groomed for this moment and looks ready to step into midfield, even excelling in Norgaard’s role against Queens Park Rangers in last Friday’s friendly. Thiago was meant to be Ivan Toney‘s replacement, so there’s a Wissa hole potentially already plugged. The acquisition of Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.5m), long viewed as the league’s best number two goalkeeper, should ensure that Flekken isn’t missed. The Bees are still in the market for another winger or two, as well, and you wouldn’t put it past them to unearth another budget gem from the continent.

Even new boss Keith Andrews is following a well-worn path: Thomas Frank started out in the backroom staff at Brentford before stepping into the hot seat. For a club as data-led as the Bees, at least Andrews is already au fait with the working practices.

DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS

Full-back depth and the blossoming partnership of Sepp van den Berg (£4.5m) and Nathan Collins (£5.0m) is encouragement at the back. Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) was a weak link last season, with Frank belatedly seeing sense and dropping his long-favoured centre-half.

We’re not pinning all of the defensive woes on Pinnock but the west Londoners kept just two clean sheets in the 21 games Pinnock started, six in 17 without him.

The Bees’ defensive numbers really improved as the season went on, too (see rolling six-Gameweek graphic below). They were top-half material for Statsbomb xG conceded from March onwards.

    RP from last article...
Anyone considering going with Igor Thiago from the off? Even if Wissa stays at Brentford I can't see him starting the first couple of games at least, and even then there should be room for both of them in the XI

You mean can see? I think he is a great pick, might even be on pens until Wissa is back or they sign someone else.

I think with Mbuemo out, Thiago their record signing will be nailed from the start (if he continues to perform). Only issue would be how good Brentford will be going forward with new management, no mbuemo, new captain, new gk. He has potential that’s for sure

Different positions. Question is whether Wissa plays wide / 2nd striker to accommodate Thiago.

I'm not particularly keen on starting with him but may be interested around WC1

I am mate. Or rather I'm being forced into it by keeping Wirtz and One premium defender (Cuc).

I'd go Beto if I knew Barry wasn't lurking, but now this up-in-the-air news that Wissa might be staying after all is scary.

I can see the bees heading south come May regardless. (Or in the bottom 5 at least)

I suppose he could become a placeholder for Barry/Beto. Just need that 0.5 for JSL - but weakens my defence too much and no way am I dropping reindeer down to a 5, or losing Xhaka for a non-player (sorry A Ramsey)

In my team. Todays article on Brentford just reinforces my Thiago pick.

Brentford - "19 goals coming from set pieces and penalties. No one could better that." Thiago has great aerial threat, strength and 6ft 2
Kayode at RB has an immense long throw which is extra set pieces effectively for Thiago
Van de Berg had 19 set piece attempts in 2500 minutes. Thiago 6ft 2 will get a lot more set piece attempts than Wissa 5ft 9
If Carvahlo starts (On my watchlist at 5.5) Kayode may well do a lot of over lapping meaning more crosses combined from the 2 compared to Mbuemo

What is putting me off Brentford players is that they don't ever get a nice run of fixtures. Collins might do well for attack returns again and also DC points, but he is the only player I would consider.

Fulham probably has the best "walk to the ground" in the country - get off the tube in Putney, cross the bridge and a lovely walk through the park along the river.

Not been Brentford mind, but my dad had his car tyres slashed in the 80s when he parked outside someone's garage. They did warn him over the loudspeaker at halftime, but he mustn't have heard (old ground obv).

I am an occassional follower of Fulham, lovely ground and welcoming atmosphere.

Outside of football, prefer Brentford's "Water & Steam" and Musical Museums and Kew Gardens over the river to anything Putney, Fulham or Hammersmith have to offer though.

I am set in this draft for a few days now:

    Sanchez (4.0)
    VvD Milenkovic LaCroix (Esteve, Rodon)
    Salah Palmer Wirtz Mitoma Anderson
    Mateta Gyokeres (Guiu)

Doubted between Wood and Mateta, with the first have the fixtures advantage but in pre-season Forest showed difficulties to create chances and I think they strongly overperformed last season. So I expect Wood to struggle this season.

Also doubt between Gyokeres and Watson. I monitor the coming friendlies of Arsenal to see how Gyokeres is doing.

    Thoughts?

Don't particularly like having two 5m goalkeepers but they have the best fixtures with Verbruggen being risky. I'll probabably do an early wildcard after a few weeks anyway when Man Utd and Arsenals fixtures improve and I can take all my money off the bench

Exactly what you said, lots of money in the bench, but seems alright

Verbruggen back for next friendly I believe. Does seem like a lot on keepers. I like Sarr and Bowen's official titles though.

So the general consensus is Williams over Aina because of this new DEFCON thing?

Better still - who's the best 5m defender to pick? Really stuck here as I decimate my team to accompany Wirtz.

    Cheers fellas

Williams for me. Him and milenkovic are my permastarters. FBs who can get defcon from good teams seem a rarity

Considering the horrid season city just had defensively and buildup wise I doubt pep is going to be going out of his way to start anyone from last seasons squad ahead of Reijnders. Can see him and rodri(if fit) starting most games in the midfield.

Good to hear. Reindeer, bizarre but true, has been only dude nailed in my team since day one.

Suppose it was just that attraction from the euros. (And his crazy transfer fee of course)

My main issue is that I love the 5.5ers a bit too much.
        I'm set on boring Anderson.
I absolutely love Malen for this season
        Reijnders looks a bargain
Then there's Arias , Adingra who look like they'll be the main men at their teams
And a safety net in Caicedo.

Plus Xhaka and maybe KDH at 5.0

Basically means I'm pretty comfortable going with 2 5.5ers in my team due to the options available. Not a huge fan of anyone until the price point of Rogers/Gakpo

I'm in! As below. 15 goals last season plus should do well with ball recoveries etc.

Not sure where to spend my 4.5m ITB having switched Beto to Guiu and committed more or less to 3-5-2.. Obviously Ramsey now needs to go. The back three are my auto-picks I was given bar Saliba. I'll swap one of the City boys for Cucerella before kick off.

    Kelleher
    Gabriel Gvardiol Ait-Nouri
    Salah Palmer Rogers Reijnders Ramsey
    Strand-Larson Solanke

    4.0 Guiu VdVen Heaven

Maybe upgrade Kelleher? Hes a top keeper but I think even Raya or Alison would struggle in that Brentford defence. Every position counts so an extra 0.5 investment for a better chance at clean sheets could make a huge difference.

If I go Ramsey>Wirtz I have 0.5m to do that move. Not sold on my front line though!

    Hi Folks,
Ready for another season and looking at feedback for draft 1.
This is based off potential transfers should they happen.
    Sels, 4.0
    VVD, Colwill, Wan-Bissaka, Dorgu, 4.0
Wirtz, Palmer, Rogers, Kudus, Harvey Elliot (should he leave Liverpool)
Haaland, Guiu, Isak (if he goes to Liverpool)

Some feedback would be great, if Elliot leaves, he will be a bargain at 5.5. Isak transfer would cover Salah with Wirtz and VVD. Isak can be Gyokores and spread the 1.5 if so.
Think I will leave the chips until after the transfer window closes and we see how teams set-up

Was it just injuries that led him to start so few games last season? Has anything changed to make him a regular this season?

Yes, just injuries. He had an Achillies problem, and when he recovered from that and got back to training suffered a Hamstring strain.

Thiago but I need to see Wissa leave Brentford. Likely on pens as well if Wissa leaves

Why are people ignoring Mateta is it just because of initial fixtures? I think he's a better asset than Wood and the non nailed J Pedro

My current forward line is Bowen, Joao Pedro and Wood. I have 1ITB to go Bowen to Ekitike? Ekitike has looked good in the preseason, but his fixtures are tough to start with.

Is it worth taking the punt or waiting to see how he starts?

Wood is the only forward I'm 100% set on.

I feel like my bench is a bit too weak for BB? If so, who would you sacrifice:

    Sanchez
    VVD Williams RAN
    Salah P.M. Sarr Palmer Rogers
    Watkins Welbeck J.Pedro

    Darlow VDV Anderson Esteve

    Cheers.
