The final round of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage matches are about to take place.

As Matchday 3 kicks off, we take a look at how Premier League players are getting on – and to see if any of them are on track to return early.

WHEN IS AFCON 2025?

AFCON is taking place between Sunday 21 December 2025 and Sunday 18 January 2026.

That covers Gameweeks 17 to 22 in FPL:

AFCON

A group stage exit could see players return as soon as Gameweek 20.

But those making it through to the knockout rounds look set to miss up to five Gameweeks, even if they bow out in the last 16.

Going all the way to the semi-finals means sitting out six Gameweeks, as there’s a third/fourth-place play-off to contest, too.

A thought occurred to me about those of us on FH.

532 formation looks quite enticing over 352

If midfield already consists of Cunha, Cherki & Palmer then the question is which is better Fringpong/Wirtz and Hall/Gordon

I need to have a real think about it as Hall & Fringpong might outscore Gordon & Wirtz

      Only with CS that works?

      1. Pep's Money Laundry

Not just cleansheets, I'm fairly sure Bradley replaces Chiesa. Which will mean Fringpong starts right of the front three.

So similar chance of attacking returns to Wirtz but the bonus of a cleansheet if that happens

With Gordon, I have doubts about him starting or maybe subbed early. Which is why I think Hall might outscore him

    2. Sir Michael Taker

The clean sheet odds in 19 are generally quite low and those towards the top of the odds are not particularly reliable defences so I would not be going for 5 personally as the bulk of the points potential still comes from cleans. Right idea probably with the likes of Frimpong but I'd be mainly picking 3 similar types perhaps Dorgu and/or KLP playing more advanced roles currently for their sides

Playing with FH, should you cover the big ownership defenders Ars, Chelsea/City?

Need to drop a couple 🙁

    Lammens
    Hall, Gabriel, Dorgu, Frimpong Chalobah
    Cherki, Foden, Gakpo, Palmer, Cunha
    Haaland Ekitike

No need to have 5 good defenders on a FH. Also I would drop Gakpo. Lammens also not great pick if you will play Dorgu.

Gabriel wouldn't make FH for me. Villa are in crazy good form. Wirtz over Gakpo too based on recent form.

if its just short term then would go heaven.

Would you go for a -8 hit to get Ekitike and Dorgu over Mateta and Guehi?

Aren't you already on a -4, so this would be a -12 in total?

Einstein's definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.

FFS's definition of insanity is asking the same question over and over again, albeit in an oblique way, expecting a confirmation answer.

Everyone's already told you it's madness. Especially in a GW where the rotation may hit harder than last GW.

But it's your team, so be your own man.

      Good luck whatever you decide.

maybe dorgu in for short term potential, can at least bench senesi this gw. but hes not a long term option really. newcastle defence is on such a long run of no clean sheets im not sure id be bringing a defender in at the moment. at least would wait until pope is starting

if money is tight for future planned transfers (like getting bruno back), and can't really afford to pay an extra 0.1 for gabriel, is it fair to do VVD to Gabriel this GW and just hope he starts?

And yet again, people gonna provoke a player price rise just one night before the very game day while there's an absolute lack of info and a strong chance of just another Gabriel cameo. Why are people fiercely transferring him in today?

    1. tuturututu
      • 5 Years
      2 months, 2 days ago

Probably due to funds, price movements as Timber is surely going to fall and Gabriel will rise

    2. F4L
      • 11 Years

yeah agreed, price changes are pretty frustrating this season, seem more volatile than usual . i guess the free 5FTs isnt helping

As someone who always has poor team value, price changes is a part of the game I really enjoy, especially when they are so wild. It adds an extra dimension and forces you to make tough decisions.
There are many people who think FPL is Monopoly (the richest wins) and I'd like to think this aspect of the game gives me an edge over them.
Regarding Gabriel, I don't think we'll get any extra info tomorrow. I'd either do it now or leave it for the next GW.

      1. Sir Michael Taker
        • 11 Years

Hinges on Calafiori probably. If hes out the consensus seems to be that MLS won't be trusted in such an important match and Hincapie would play LB. If Calafiori is fine then Arteta has choices to make. Don't think Timber impacts any of this as none of them can play RB

Curious to hear why? My thinking is attacking upside for an in form player against a tired squad vs Defcon and hoping for a clean sheet

Higher floor for Collins..decent chance of a clean plus defcons and attacking threat, I fancy Palace-Fulham to be tight and cagey.

I would say far from it, possibly until the Afcon players return.

He had a great pre-season and was in a lot of teams, but seemed to lose his place due to poor performances. He’s had bit part appearances since.

The last match looked like he was playing to impress and he put hell of a shift in.

Still a good option for the next few if he keeps that level up.
