Moving Target

Moving Target – Kieran Trippier

Mauricio Pochettino’s quest to shore up Tottenham’s leaky defence continued apace last week with the capture of Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier on a five-year deal.

The former Clarets defender – who carded the third-highest Fantasy Premier League score (118 points) among his team-mates last term – lauded the quality of Spurs’ squad, insisting he’ll do his utmost to forge a route into their starting XI:

“When I first heard that the club was interested I didn’t have to think twice because it’s such a big club and now I just can’t wait to get started. I’m very keen to perform in training every single day, do the best I can and hopefully get the nod from the gaffer. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do well for the other players, the staff and, of course, the fans. The squad here is unbelievable, there’s so much quality in the team and I’m really looking forward to starting work in pre-season and being a part of that. I’ll take every opportunity I get with both hands and hopefully play my part for everyone at the club.”

The History

The Bury-born Trippier learned his trade as part of Manchester City’s youth set-up from the age of nine. Having captained the Sky Blues’ triumphant reserve side in the 2007/08 FA Youth Cup, the rampaging right-back penned his first professional contract.

Trippier joined Championship outfit Barnsley on a one-month loan deal from February 2010 but only managed three appearances due to injury. The former England U21 international made the switch back to the South Yorkshire club the following summer, originally joining on a six-month loan deal that was extended to encompass the full campaign. Trippier recorded 41 appearances in all competitions throughout 2010/11, notching two goals and six assists, and claiming the Young Player of the Season award.

Burnley then sought to recruit Trippier on a season-long loan deal as a replacement for their outgoing right-back Tyrone Mears, before signing him permanently during the January transfer window. Trippier amassed four goals and six assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, and was named Burnley’s Player of the Year.

In the 2012/13 campaign, Trippier – who was honoured in the Championship Team of the Year – missed just one league clash (due to suspension) and tallied a hugely impressive 12 assists in 45 outings. The next season harvested a similarly head-turning attacking output, as Trippier chalked up two goals and 14 assists across 46 outings en route to Burnley’s promotion and another spot in the Championship Team of the Year.

During Burnley’s one season in the top-flight last term, Trippier played all but five minutes of his side’s 38 league fixtures, notching four assists in the process – only six defenders registered more.

The Prospects

In light of Kyle Walker’s ongoing injury issues (he missed 23 matches last season and clocked only 2300 minutes in the 2013/14 campaign) and DeAndre Yedlin’s inexperience, it’s no surprise that Spurs felt obliged to bolster their right-back options. Certainly, the fact that Trippier sat out just six league matches in the past four seasons must have factored into their transfer committee’s thinking as Pochettino hunted for a reliable option.

From a Fantasy perspective, Trippier’s exceptional creative output should render him a real prospect in Spurs’ rearguard if he can nail down a starting berth and the North London club can improve on a paltry haul of nine clean sheets. Astonishingly, Trippier attempted 341 crosses last term and executed 42 more successful crosses than the next best defender Leighton Baines (91 to 49), underlining his proclivity for hugging the touchline. Incidentally, Baines was the only defender to fashion more key passes (70) than Trippier (63), who outclassed the much-vaunted Branislav Ivanovic (36) in this regard.

Considering that Burnley were the lowest-scoring team last season with 28 goals, there’s certainly scope for Trippier to improve on his four assists. In fact, the Lilywhites’ latest recruit tallied more than double the volume of successful crosses than Tottenham’s full roster of defenders (43) last season, while he came close to trumping their collective key pass output (73), too. With regards to his direct competitors, Trippier’s average of 57 minutes per key pass was more than twice as quick as Walker’s 125.4 and far superior to Danny Rose, whose average of 92.2 was the most impressive of any Spurs defender.

Tottenham’s poor defensive record last season (only four sides were breached on more occasions) should ensure that their rearguard starters are pitched at similar price points next term, with a ceiling of 5.5 expected. Given that Jan Vertonghen has managed just one goal and an assist in the last two seasons, Trippier looks poised to challenge Rose as the primary route into Spurs’ rearguard.

Fantasy managers might elect to hold fire in the early stages of next season, though, given that Pochettino’s troops open with a trip to Old Trafford and then face tough match-ups against Stoke City, Everton and Manchester City in their subsequent six fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CRY, MCI).

As an aside, the arrival of Trippier and 22-year-old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer places uncertainty over Eric Dier’s prospects next season. The versatile defender – who bagged two goals and three assists last term – enjoyed a security of starts in the second half of 2014/15, yet was primarily tasked with covering at right-back. Elsewhere, Tottenham’s recent business has pushed former MLS starlet Yedlin further down the pecking order, with some reports suggesting that he’s poised for a loan switch to another Premier League outfit. If priced below 5.0, Yedlin would certainly pique our interest by virtue of his attacking instincts, with the Canaries opening schedule also boosting his appeal should he find his way to Carrow Road.

Why though? 🙁 You try being the saviours of English football, slowly eroded by idiots like Rodgers. When I'm feeling sad, I'll remember we have Koeman and you have Rodgers. And the world is good again 😀

One of my major hopes for next season is the moderate pricing of Kyle Naughton, at £4.5m.
He should be completely nailed on, Rangel and Richards are really terrible from what I have seen of them, and Naughton had a very on-off season, a couple of red cards at Tottenham, then a major injury after joining Spurs.

More so a bargain when Fabianski and Williams will surely be priced at £5.5m, and there is rotation at LB.

Well then you haven't done your research 😉

I couldn't understand why his form had faded quite so badly and why Koeman seemed to lose patience. So I did some digging up - groin injuries crop up constantly. 🙁 In the end, they took the decision to rest him completely at the end of the season in the hope it can be sorted out for 15/16.

I think we like buying into the idea of potential because we have limited funds and resources but good facilities etc. It relies on good scouting and occasionally comes unstuck.

Yep, I've just been thinking about the developing a load of players as part of a cohesive team. All solid fine players sure, but the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts so most purchases of Saints players will be overpriced

I think Memento is by far Nolan's best film. His recent work feels like style over substance (though I accept I'm the only person in the world who thinks Inception was garbage).

Memento is indeed his best work. A shockingly fresh way of storytelling and flawless execution. Then comes Prestige & Dark Knight.

Inception was just...complicated. Don't know if it was great as rather than enjoying the movie, I had put an effort on understanding every scene. Memento was complicated as well but it was fun and I could focus on overall story/plot.

I love complicated films when there's either a point, or it's an experience I can become submerged in (Mulholland Drive is my favourite film, and I even love Inland Empire, the most bizarre film I've ever seen). Inception just tried to cater to 2 markets - film lovers and, at the risk of sounding pretentious, film students, and the blockbuster audience. I don't think there was enough depth behind "this is a bit weird and confusing".

I don't remember the dialogues or the characters now. If it was such a great film, they should have stayed in my mind. Personally for me, Nolan has never been an expert on dialogues or character development or memorable scenes (Dark knight was much of Ledger rather than Nolan)

I liked the hard sci-fi in it. Unfortunately Nolan decided the plot needed the science to be secondary to some spurious emotional hokum. Real shame that.

Its an epic in cinematography, but know this, it maintains that pace throughout. I have watched it a few times when I was studying Kubrick, but embarrassingly, I found it way too dull and I was generally deemed ignorant.

Depends which way you look at it.12.5m is a bit less than he's worth whilst he's at Soton but given the curse of Rodgers with Saints players moving to Lpool he's worth less by the time he crosses the Mersey.

  13. Saniul

Can't say I'm not disappointed at Soton not getting atleast £17-18m for Clyne, when Shaw got them £30m. We know he'll eventually become shite at Liverpool, but right now one of the best RBs in the league...

And we got £24m for van Persie who had one year on his contract, and one year of football left in him. 😉

Hopefully Europa brings some more money and they manage to hold onto their players (and players think relatively highly of the club as well). It's so pleasant watching a club creating a good player and then being able to hold onto them.

            You perfectionist.
So just 24 and engaged. I trust your grav is a reflection on yourself, only yesterdayI watched Pilkington on Alan Carr Chatty Man saying how he's always been 40, just in a younger mans body.

Aha I have just always been rather cynical, and while everyone else in primary school listened to the Spice Girls I was with my Dad listening to the Beach Boys and Scott Walker. The engagement is not what people who know me expected; I only really settled down in London, while in Liverpool I never ever thought I'd be engaged at 24.

Did you know it was originally meant to be a TV series pilot, but ABC decided not to make the TV show after all (they thought it was shite), but Alain Sarde from Canal+ brought Lynch some money and convinced him to make a movie out of it, and Lynch then just kind of continued with something else than what he had started with to finish the movie.

I guess you did know this, as you love the film, just as you didn't mention this in your blog - or at least it didn't catch my eye.

I did know that, and it's incredible as it seems to be the most thought out, perfectly constructed film ever, I don't know how it would have worked as a TV show.

The blog was more just about my love for the film, not really the process behind it.

I am a proper film buff, I find it amazing, with a collection of well over a 1,000 movies, full Sky HD movie package, hundreds of weekends spent indoors, cinema club membership, the internet and all the rest, I still haven't seen Mulhullhond Drive. I recorded half of it the other day but realised its greatness so didn't want to miss the start so deleted it.
Can you believe I hadn't even seen the room until a couple of months ago.

You can't miss the start, it will make no sense if you miss any of it. It's not a film you can half-watch at all, it requires your complete, undivided attention (and multiple viewings).

Yes, certainly similarities in the contrast of bright, "cheesy" caricatures (Jeffrey and Sandy at the start, and then the final scene) and the murky, foreboding world that lies underneath. I love Blue Velvet, but I much prefer Mulholland Drive.

Good for Everton in the short term, but the buy-back clause might make it a poor piece of business, depending on how much Everton are entitled to ask for him if they activate it.

It goes up every season for 3 seasons then it's over. Chelsea had a similar deal when we signed Romeu. If Barca buy him back it will ensure Everton make money and effectively had a free loan as well.

Depends how much money though. If it's pittance then Everton take the risk and responsibility of maturing a player and maybe nothing in return apart from the short-term benefits.

I do see it as a good thing for Everton, on the whole, but it does seem like so much of their business is short-term.

Oh, right. In that case, full steam ahead!

For some reason I had it in my mind that it was about the same as Everton paid. Not sure where I got that from.

The Chelsea Romeu deal meant that Barca's buy-back fee rose €5m per season till it expired. I believe the Deolefeu deal works in a similar way.

It's still the short term benefit of having a very good player they couldn't maybe get otherwise - if Barcelona signs him back, he sure must have done well.

Don't know much of Sisto at all, though if he's getting first team football at 20 in an OK league and is being linked with big sides, there must be something there. Good luck with it- you should be able to offer him the most playing time

25th June and team already starting to take shape...

    Myhill

    Ivanovic / Huth / Garbutt

    Hazard / Deulofeu

    Aguero

On a serious note though, Huth and Garbutt look like good options as long as FAPL don't hit them with stupid 5 prices

Morgan will probably be 5.0m Doos. Huth has a chance of 4.5m. Depends whether FPL look at the whole season with Leicester or get very influenced by the last quarter of it. If it's the latter virtually every Leicester player will be overpriced.

      Pantilimon (myhill)
      Ivanovic Bertrand huth (olsson elphick)
      Hazard Sanchez* mane Bjohnson (Ritchie)
      Aguero* vardy CWilson

Might be a push to afford this. Might need to shave off a few 0.5s.

Talking about movies, the single greatest moment in cinema history has to be in fast and furious 5. After they get ambushed and the rock is lying there waiting to die, sees Dom Toretto walking towards him to seemingly end his life. Then all of a sudden Dom holds out his hand. A symbol of peace. Then and only then do you realise that these two titans are now on the same team, fighting for whats right, fighting for justice, together as one. Brought a tear to my eye. #realmendocry

    First u21 draft for semis:

    Ter Stegen
    Vestergard-Guerreiro-Augustinson(Korb-Dead)
    Silva-Younes-Hojberg-Meyer(Tibbling)
    Guideti-Volland-Fisher

    1m left

    What do you think?

Looks decent. Think I would play Korb ahead of Augustinson but can see why you wouldn't want to double up.

Edging closer then. If this is true, there's obviously a lot more gone on behind the scenes than we know.

I think it's a matter of when it happens - when Madrid want a player, they get him 😛

apparently he doesn't want to be included in any part of a deal involving DDG

He doesn't want to be seen to be helping to facilitate the departure of his friend Iker Casillas

That is really nice of him. But basically that is exactly what's happening, there is simply an extra step involved. UTD are getting one of the worst deals Ive ever known. Why they pay so much money for ageing players is beyond me. RVP did very well in that first season but how they couldn't negotiate better is beyond me. Now Ramos at 29, Shcwein at 31

Because they suddenly need some experience, if they let go of RvP this summer then they only have 5 players over the age of 27 in there squad which is nuts!

Ok, but why pay so much for them and lose someone so young in return.

RVP won the title almost single handed... you'll struggle to find a United fan that thinks that was a bad signing

35mil for Ramos is a lot of money but every player we are linked with is 25mil+
The transfer market has gone mad

Also the number I've heard for Schwein is 7mil... the same amount we are getting for Nani and I'd happily swap them two
