Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Debut goals for Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette and Everton’s Wayne Rooney help their new clubs to pre-season wins, while the proposed move of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Goodison Park gathers pace.

Here’s the notes from yesterday’s action.

Sydney FC 0 Arsenal 2

Record signing Alexandre Lacazette marked his Arsenal debut with a goal as the Gunners strolled to victory in Sydney.

The French striker coolly converted Alex Iwobi’s pass after coming on for Danny Welbeck, who had earlier had a penalty saved.

Skipper Per Mertesacker opened the scoring with an early strike in a match dominated by Arsenal, with teenager Reiss Nelson catching the eye at right wing-back in his first senior start for the club.

Significantly, Arsene Wenger stuck with the 3-4-2-1 formation he adopted towards the end of last season, providing further confirmation that this system will be retained.

It meant that another summer recruit, Sead Kolasinac, made his debut on the left of the three-man defence.

The Bosnian international made a number of defensive interceptions and surging forward runs, underlining his suitability to replace Nacho Monreal in that role.

Indeed, Kolasinac’s versatility means that we cannot be certain on Wenger’s plans. While he boasts a stronger end product than Nacho Monreal at wing-back, his strength may yet see him push for a berth in the back three with the Spaniard retained out wide.

It was Lacazette who grabbed the headlines, doing enough in his brief time on the pitch to please the 26.4% of Fantasy managers who have splashed out 10.5 on the striker, with Arsenal’s generous opening schedule (at home at least) helping to justify the outlay.

Handing Lacazeete a central support berth behind fellow sub Olivier Giroud, Wenger was certainly happy with his new man’s debut goal.

“It is important for him to get that (first goal) off his shoulders because you expect to score if you are a striker.”

Arsenal have taken a 25-man squad on their tour of Australia and China, but Alexis Sanchez is not in it. He and Shkodran Mustafi have been given extra time off after the Confederations Cup, with the Chilean still consistently linked with a move away from north London.

Jack Wilshere, the injured Gabriel, Kieran Gibbs, Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson and Wojciech Szczesny have all also been left at home.

Arsenal XI:Cech (Martinez 46); Bielik (Nketiah 68), Mertesacker (Naitland-Miles 68), Kolasinac (Monreal 68); Coquelin (Xhaka 68), Willock (Elneny 68); Nelson (Oxlade-Chamberlain 68), Ozil (Iwobi 68), Walcott (Giroud 68), Bramall (Malen 68); Welbeck (Lacazette 68).

Gor Mahia FC 1 Everton 2

Wayne Rooney’s first start of his second spell at Everton was lit up by a superb long-range strike in Africa.

The forward’s 7.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has persuaded 17.5% of managers to put him in their early team squads, with his potential for mid-price value seemingly trumping the Toffees’ brutal start to the campaign. Everton faces daunting trips to Chelsea and both Manchester sides, as well as a visit from Spurs, before September is done.

Ademola Lookman, playing out wide as part of a 4-3-2-1 formation, set up Rooney with some smart work on the left and the former Manchester United man, employed as a lone striker, lashed home from outside the area.

Manager Ronald Koeman handed new signing Davy Klaasen his debut, the Dutch international forming a midfield trio with James McCarthy and Morgan Schneiderlin, while Aaron Lennon started on the opposite flank to Lookman.

But that midfield looks almost certain to change again, with reports in the local media suggesting it is only a matter of time before Everton sign Swansea City talisman Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Icelander did not travel with the club as they set off on their US tour, and Swans coach Paul Clement seems resigned to losing their star man.

“We had that situation with Jack Cork. In the summer there was no thought of moving Jack on but it got to a point when another club came in with a really good offer. That might end up being the case with Gylfi. We don’t know yet.”

Koeman changed the entire team for the second half, with new signing Michael Keane coming into the heart of the defence alongside Mo Besic, as Kieran Dowell netted the winner from a Tom Davies pass.

Notably, Jonjoe Kenny claimed the right-back berth for the Toffees in the first-hallf, with Matt Pennington replacing him at the break. Mason Holgate was not included the squad following his England U21 exertions.

New arrivals Jordan Pickford and Sandro Ramirez have also been given extended time off and did not travel to Tanzania, while Ross Barkley – who is injured with a groin problem – was also left at home as a move away from Goodison continues to be on the cards.

Everton XI First half: Stekelenburg; Kenny, Williams, Jagielka, Connolly; Schneiderlin, McCarthy, Klaassen; Lennon, Lookman; Rooney.

Everton XI Second half:Hewelt; Pennington, Baines, Keane, Besic; Barry, Gana, Davies; Dowell, Mirallas; Calvert-Lewin.

Could I have an opinion or two on my team? Or even an out of 10?

    Pickford (Elliot)
    Walker Lindelof Mawson (Dunk Lowe)
Alli Pogba Coutinho Pedro (L Cook)
    Kane Gayle Iheanacho*

    *Caveat: Assuming he moves.

Kane was fully fit at the start of the last three seasons, he got an injury about 2 months in last time, and in 2014/15 he was just breaking into the first team. But he has played every game in August last two seasons and never scored.

As we search for value players in our teams, with funds at a premium. I thought I’d take a look at the three main midfielders from each of the promoted teams. All are priced kindly at £6m, freeing up funds elsewhere. So what do the numbers say?*

*Stats are based on games in the Championship, unless otherwise stated:

Tom Ince (HUD) – Opening fixtures (pal, NEW, SOU, whm, LEI)

      2017/18 – 45 games, 14 goals, 8 assists
      2016/17 – 42 games, 12 goals, 7 assists
      2015/16 – 24 games, 11 goals, 2 assists
      2013/14 – 23 games, 7 goals, 6 assists

      Total last two seasons:
      87 games, 26 goals, 15 assists

      Total last four seasons:
      134 games, 44 goals, 23 assists

Matt Ritchie (NEW) – Opening five fixtures (TOT, hud, WHM, swa, STO)

      2017/18 – 42 games, 12 goals, 8 assists
      2016/17 – 37 games, 4 goals, 6 assists (premier league)
      2015/16 – 46 games, 15 goals, 17 assists
      2013/14 – 30 games, 9 goals, 2 assists

      Total last two seasons:
79 games, 16 goals, 14 assists (one season in the prem)

      Total last four seasons:
155 games, 40 goals, 33 assists (one season in the prem)

Anthony Knockaert (BHA) – Opening five fixtures (MCI, lei, wat, WBA, bou)

      2017/18 – 45 games, 15 goals, 9 assists
2016/17 – 39 games, 10 goals, 13 assists (half of season in Juliper Pro league)
      2015/16 – 9 games, 0 goals, 0 assists (prem league)
      2013/14 – 42 games, 5 goals, 7 assists

      Total last two seasons:
84 games, 25 goals, 22 assists (half season in juliper pro league)

      Total last four seasons:
135 games, 30 goals, 29 assists (one season in the prem, half season in Juliper pro league)

Conclusion – Given Brighton’s tricky opening fixtures, with three away games in five and City at home. I think Knockeart is a wait and see. He’s only really came to life last couple of seasons, and quarter of that time was in the Belgium Juliper Pro League.

Ritchie vs Ince is a closer run thing. Ritchie has set pieces and pens on his side, plus experience of playing in the prem. Ince took pens at Derby, so there is a chance he may get them at Huddersfield too, and some set pieces. I do like their opening fixtures, although after Spurs, Newcastle's are kind too.

Personally I think I’m probably going to take a punt on Ince, although as a Sunderland fan, there’s probably some bias there

I watched Knockaert for Leicester in our first season up in the Premier League. Despite being great for us in the Championship he seemed to become somewhat sidelined as soon as we were promoted and suffered in what game time he was given. He is the main man at Brighton now, and much more experienced. He was a very emotional guy at Leicester and it affected him at times. He has grown as a player and man by all accounts though, I expect better from him this time.

I really hope he does well, still a fans favourite at Leicester. A class act.

Definitely one to watch, but I won't start with him. He lost out to Schlupp, Mahrez and Albrighton for us. Even though he was arguably our best player in the Championship. Very unfortunate.

He has a point to prove, and he definitely has the ability and the drive to make it at the top level.

Think I am pretty set with this, adamant I want both Lukaku & Kane. Redmond may become Tadic but will leave for now.

          Foster - Myhill
Lindelhof - Cedric - Ake - Tripper - Hudson (or Rangel possibly)
          Alli - Redmond - Sane - Willian - Loftus-Cheek
          Lukaku - Kane - Gayle

Any advice on what to improve?

          Foster (Elliot)
McAuley | Alderweireld | Azpiliqueta (Mee | Rangel)
          Alli | Sanchez | Redmond | Phillips (Loftus-Cheek)
          Lukaku | Rooney | Defoe

Trippier instead of Alderweireld, Stanislas over Phillips, Benteke over Defoe, need some City players in there imo

Was amazing at Porto, did not get much playing time because of Carvajal,Has potential and Conte can help him develop just like Moses,Infact could be upgrade over Moses IMO and can play both flanks.
Nowhere near Alex Sandro tbh though

If Cilic wins this match, I'll go without Lukaku in my team.
If Querrey wins, I'll go without Sanchez and Kun.
If it's a draw, I'll go without Kane.

Why does everyone think Pogba is going to do really well this season (assumed that given hes in so many teams) when he only got 115 points last season? What am I missing here?

He was improving towards end of last season, and his goals/assists last season at Juve was pretty decent. Saying that, he'll be a wait and see for me.

Completely agree! Better options out there. That could change if Mourinho buys a good CDM, then Pogba may go further forward. Even still, hard to see him out scoring Sane or Pedro. Even Ramsey might be a better pick.

Think most will be either Utd fans or else, have him in deep dependent on them signing a DM...

He could of done way better last year, created lots of chances, nobody put em away for him, say they banking on Lukaku doing that, also hit bar good few times, Good price for his potential - easy to swap out for a 7/7.5 mid too if doesn't do much.

United also have great opening fixtures, I'm tempted myself but set on Lukaku not sure of united double up...

            That's my tuppence worth anyways

Could take pens now that Ibra has gone. Is on Free kicks, hit the woodwork plenty past season which could lead to more goals this season.. and now he has Lukaku who'll finish more chances than Ibra could manage

              Lukaku not on pens?
And if you think he'll get assists due to Lukaku being able to finish more chances, surely Lukaku is the one to go for?

If they put a defensive midfielder between him and the defenders, he'll be granted freedom to bomb forward.

hey i built a team and i'm afraid it is currently imbalanced i would really aprreciate feedback!
            foster (elliot)
            cedric, dawson, lidelof (mee, rangel)
alexis, redmond, (14 million to spend on 2 others) (loftus-cheek)
            lukaku, kane, deeney

i need recommendations for the 2 other midfielders! was thinking about zaha and willian. another thing is i thought about two other options like downgrading alexis to KDB and having coutinho/salah+ a 7 million midfielder. or dongrading futhermore KDB to sane and bulking up the defence witht the addition of milner instead of dawson since milner will take penaltys for liverpool.

i really appreciate your feedback and please recommend one of the options above plus filling midfielders!
