Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 31 – Part Two

Mark Hughes rolls out a 4-4-2 in his first match in charge of Southampton. Son Heung-min leads the line in Harry Kane’s absence as Spurs clinch a place in the FA Cup semi-finals, while Paul Lambert freshens up his back-four for Stoke’s clash with Everton.

After checking out the first team teams yesterday, we turn to part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from Gameweek 31 and the FA Cup quarter-finals, with one eye on what’s to come after the international break as we look to Gameweek 32 and the upcoming European matches.

Manchester United

Starting XI: Romero; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Shaw (Young 46); McTominay, Matic; Mata (Rashford 74), Lingard (Fellaini 89), Martial; Lukaku. Subs not used: De Gea, Lindelof, Pogba, Sanchez.

  • What we saw: Jose Mourinho named a fairly strong side for the FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton, although Sergio Romero and Luke Shaw were handed rare starts in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation while both Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez were relegated to the bench. Mourinho decided to make a tactical change at half-time, with Ashley Young replacing Shaw at left-back.
  • What we learned: With a home fixture against Swansea City in Gameweek 32, Pogba and Sanchez, in particular, should return to the teamsheet. If Mourinho sticks with a 4-2-3-1, Pogba will be competing with Scott McTominay and Marouane Fellaini for a start at the base of midfield. Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata appear to be battling it out for three spots, and perhaps only two positions should Mourinho deploy a 4-3-3 to incorporate Pogba alongside McTominay and Nemanja Matic. Sanchez, Lingard and Rashford may be favoured against the Swans. Young will return at left-back given Mourinho’s latest criticism of Shaw’s performances, while the international break could allow Phil Jones to return to full fitness, and possibly push again for a start in central defence.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield

Southampton

Starting XI: McCarthy; Cedric Soares, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Hojbjerg, Lemina; Tadic, Boufal (Redmond 65), Carrillo (Long 82); Gabbiadini (Romeu 88). Subs not used: Yoshida, Ward-Prowse, Sims, Forster.

  • What we saw: New Saints boss Mark Hughes decided to stick with many of the players who had been playing regularly under former manager Mauricio Pellegrino for his first match in charge against Wigan Athletic. Notably, he did deploy a 4-4-2 formation, however, pairing Guido Carrillo and Manolo Gabbiadini up front. Dusan Tadic and Sofiane Boufal were handed starts out wide, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Mario Lemina were preferred to Oriol Romeu in central midfield. Holding a 2-0 lead in the FA Cup quarter-final, Hughes decided to introduce Romeu late on, seeing Southampton finish the match in a more defensive 4-5-1.
  • What we learned: Given the victory on Sunday, Hughes is likely to stick with the majority of the same starting XI. So Carrillo and Gabbiadini may form the front pairing for the crucial Gameweek 32 trip to West Ham United. Redmond is a possible alternative out wide, perhaps most likely in place of Boufal, while Romeu may have to again settle for a place on the bench. James Ward-Prowse is another who could remain among the substitutes. Maya Yoshida returned to the bench last weekend, and is a possible alternative in central defence, while Alex McCarthy looks set to be favoured over Fraser Forster in goal once again.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks, forwards

Stoke City

Starting XI: Butland; Johnson, Zouma, Shawcross, Stafylidis; Ndiaye, Adam, Allen; Shaqiri (Berahino 76), Crouch, Sobhi (Choupo-Moting 72, Jese Rodriguez 79). Subs not used: Haugaard, Bauer, Martins Indi, Fletcher.

  • What we saw: Paul Lambert rolled out his favoured 4-1-4-1 system for the home clash against Everton, although he did make a host of changes following the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City. Peter Crouch was recalled in the lone striker role, while Ramadan Sobhi returned on the left side of midfield. Charlie Adam earned a rare start in central midfield. At the back, experienced duo Ryan Shawcross and Glen Johnson started in place of Bruno Martins Indi and Moritz Bauer respectively. But following Adam’s first-half sending off, the Potters lined up in more of a 4-1-3-1 formation. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored after coming on as a second-half substitute but was injured in the act of scoring, with Jese Rodriguez then taking over on the left side of midfield.
  • What we learned: Adam will now serve a three-match suspension, starting with the Gameweek 32 trip to Arsenal. Geoff Cameron missed out last weekend due to a hamstring problem, but he will be the Scot’s likely replacement providing he’s passed fit. Darren Fletcher offers another option in the middle of the park. If available, Choupo-Moting could come in for Sobhi, while the two-week break should mean Mame Biram Diouf (shoulder) is fit for the trip to the Emirates. He would be the favourite to replace Crouch as the lone striker, with Choupo-Moting, Jese Rodriguez and Saido Berahino other possibilities. Bauer was somewhat surprisingly left out of the starting XI, but he may come back in for Johnson at right-back, while Shawcross could keep his place in central defence.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, central midfield, left wing, lone striker

Swansea City

Starting XI: Nordfeldt; van der Hoorn (Roberts 80), Bartley, Mawson; Naughton (Narsingh 46), Ki Sung-yueng, Carroll, Olsson; Dyer (Routledge 86), Abraham, Clucas. Subs not used: Mulder, Fernandez, Britton, Byers.

  • What we saw: Carlos Carvalhal was forced into making changes for the FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur. With Jordan Ayew suspended, Tammy Abraham started up front in the 5-4-1 formation, while Nathan Dyer and Tom Carroll earned starts due to Andre Ayew and Andy King being cup-tied. The Swans boss also chose to hand rests to Lukasz Fabianski and Federico Fernandez, allowing Kristoffer Nordfeldt and Kyle Bartley to start. With his side trailing 2-0, Carvalhal decided to switch to more of a 4-3-3, with substitute Luciano Narsingh (right) and Dyer (left) flanking Abraham in attack. Mike van der Hoorn moved to right-back, while Sam Clucas played as part of the three-man midfield.
  • What we learned: With a trip to Manchester United up next in Gameweek 32, Carvalhal looks set to continue with the defensive 5-4-1 system. Andre Ayew and King should both come back into the side, most likely at the expense of Dyer and Carroll. Alternatively, Andre Ayew could start as the lone striker in place of Abraham, with Dyer retaining his start on the right side of midfield. Renato Sanches is closing in on a first-team return, and may soon be able to return to the bench to provide another midfield option.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, right wing, lone striker

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Vorm; Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Sissoko; Lucas Moura (Llorente 73), Lamela (Alli 81), Eriksen; Son Heung-min. Subs not used: Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Foyth, Dembele.

  • What we saw: Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino also opted to make some changes for the trip to Swansea. Back-up players such as Michel Vorm, Moussa Sissoko, and Lucas Moura all earned starts, while regulars such as Hugo Lloris, Mousa Dembele and Dele Alli dropped to the bench. Son Heung-min was favoured as the lone striker over Fernando Llorente in the 4-2-3-1 system. The South Korean ended the match on the left wing after Llorente was brought on for Lucas.
  • What we learned: With a trip to Chelsea up next in Gameweek 32, and following their UEFA Champions League exit, Pochettino will name his strongest possible starting XI. Son should retain his start as the lone striker in Harry Kane’s continued absence, then, meaning Erik Lamela may well keep his place in the side in one of the attacking midfield positions. Dembele should return alongside Eric Dier in the double-pivot, with the only contentious area in the starting XI perhaps being at right-back, where Serge Aurier could be preferred to Kieran Trippier. Should Toby Alderweireld feature for Belgium over the international break, he may come under consideration to replace Davinson Sanchez in central defence.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders

Watford

Starting XI: Karnezis; Mariappa, Holebas, Britos (Janmaat 81); Femenia, Doucoure, Capoue, Prodl; Pererya, Deeney (Okaka 70), Richarlison (Hughes 65). Subs not used: Gomes, Cathcart, Carrillo, Gray.

  • What we saw: After losing 3-0 to Arsenal using an attacking 4-2-3-1 formation, Javi Gracia decided to switch to a three-man defence for the trip to Liverpool. Miguel Britos was handed a recall in the back three, while Kiko Femenia and Jose Holebas played as wing-backs in the 3-4-3 system. Roberto Pereyra (right) and Richarlison (left) flanked central striker Troy Deeney. The Hornets ended the match in more of a 4-2-3-1, with Daryl Janmaat at right-back, Femenia on the right wing and Will Hughes joining Pereyra in the attacking midfield spots.
  • What we learned: Given that Watford host Bournemouth in Gameweek 32, it’s likely that Gracia will revert back to his preferred 4-2-3-1 system. Femenia could be an option to start on the right wing, which would allow Janmaat to come in at right-back. Alternatively, Hughes or Andre Carrillo may join Pereyra and Richarlison in the advanced midfield positions. Britos could be the centre-back to make way. The international break should allow Tom Cleverley (hamstring) to move closer to a first-team return, and if available, he is a viable starter in both central midfield and the No 10 position.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, flanks, attacking midfield

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Dawson, Evans (Phillips 77), Hegazi; Nyom, Livermore, Yacob, Brunt (Field 82), Gibbs; Rodriguez (Robson-Kanu 86), Rondon. Subs not used: Myhill; Burke, Krychowiak, McClean.

  • What we saw: Alan Pardew switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the trip to Bournemouth, pairing Salomon Rondon and Jay Rodriguez up front. Claudio Yacob was recalled in central midfield in place of Grzegorz Krychowiak, while Jonny Evans returned from illness to start in the back three. Allan Nyom and Kieran Gibbs took up the wing-back roles. Evans was replaced on 77 minutes due to cramp, making way for Matt Phillips. The substitute played at right wing-back, with Nyom moving inside to join Craig Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi in the three-man backline.
  • What we learned: Following an improved performance, and given Rondon and Rodriguez combined for Albion’s goal, Pardew may well retain the 3-5-2 for the home meeting with Burnley in Gameweek 32. That would make changes unlikely, with Gareth Barry a possible starter in central midfield if he recovers from a knock. Sam Field and Krychowiak are other options in the middle of the park. Phillips is a more attacking alternative to Nyom at right wing-back, while if they are back in contention following injuries, James Morrison, Nacer Chadli and Daniel Sturridge could all feature, most likely from the bench.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right wing-back, central midfield

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Best midfield for the season run in.

We know the teams that have double gameweeks, although are still waiting to find out when they will be.

This means that we can already start planning who will be the best midfielders for the season run in.

    Which midfielders are essential?

Is a power five the best way forward and if so what sacrifices need to be made elsewhere?

Are there any good cheap mids to consider, partic from double double gameweek sides?

What of City mids - time to ignore them with rotation looming?

King is the best cheap 5th MID to enable 3 premium forwards and a strong defence/midfield. Ki isn't worth the extra 0.8, Gudmunsson would be worth the extra for those that can afford though.

I'm a Swansea season ticket holder and I think he's nailed on, he is performing much better than Carroll. He has good potential for a goal/assist considering his price.

Would you say that Ki-Sung is worth the extra 0.8 over King? Sounds v interesting with a double at that price, but I'd hate to be suckered by the price and miss a Ki-Sung haul, he's done quite well recently and I currently have him in my WCT.

          My mid too.

It boiled down to Silva vs Lukaku and I chose Silva. I'm aware of the rotation risk & will have a decent first sub as cover (currently on Murray).

I'm in two minds at the moment. The timing of the doubles may help me. But what I do know is that I want to focus on key double double assets.

      Mahrez is locked in.
Salah too - no double but he's on a different plain of fantasy excellence so is going nowhere.
Son looks great value still - even with Kane back

Willian also in the running for me with two doubles.

Silva could make the cut if I go for a power five. It's either him or Lukaku essentially for me - some others considering Silva may have another either/or striker in mind.

Having a cheaper fifth mid does allow for a better frontline and spend some more in defence.

      1. Pegboy
        • 14 Years

Pretty much my position too. Silva (and better defence) vs Lukaku. What's swinging it towards Silva is that I feel the budget forwards are better than the budget mids.

Sterling more nailed with Silva's on going issues surely and he's more consistent

It was compassionate leave, not an injury. He's back and firing.

Having said that, I'm only choosing him over Sterling due to price.

I'd argue that Son may be better value with Kane back.
It's all about whether Kaku is worth a gamble in the front three.
The fact that I'm using the word 'gamble' for a £11.3 player is interesting!
Mahrez, Son, Willian & Salah for me.

Every RMWCT I've seen so far has a combination of Salah, Mahrez, William, son, silva/sterling, Kennedy/Ki. Can't really argue with it but does lend support to being unable to climb the rankings if we all have the same.

They'll be lots of other smaller differentials and I'm sure it'll fall apart soon, but with the available information, that (broadly) looks the best midfield, taking price into account.

That's the teams you've seen here or twitter maybe. Lots will go their own way - many have already used their second wildcard. You will be surprised how few managers have that combination come GWK 32, especially those without wildcards.

      Salam - Mahrez - Son - Willian

If going power 5 would probably add Sterling to it. But I think there a lot of good forwards also available who more nailed than City mids so I’m opting for 343.

I currently have a WC midfield of Salah, Son, Sterling, Mahrez and Willian.
It seems very template from what I read on FFS, but clearly there's a reason for that.

The City rotation is a concern and so there's some certainly other names to consider such as Eriksen, Alli, Mhiky, and Hazard to name just 4. But City can do in 1 fixture what others can't in 2!

Those with the Free hit available:

Salah Son Mahrez Willian Kenedy (3-4-3) with Kaku Auba Vardy up top

Salah Son Mahrez Willian Arnautovic (3-5-2) with two of the above up top sacrificing 1 for Ayew/Murray/Barnes etc

Good cheap mids: GroB, Albrighton, Gudmundsson, Kenedy, Ritchie, Knockaert, JWP

With FH can ignore the City boys with their tough fixtures and load up in GW 35. Too much rotation and lack of a second DGW makes them less appealing

        Salah - a cert
Mahrez - Firm, two doubles, fixtures
Son - playing upfront, home form is great

After that the players get a bit more tricky:
Miki - form, fixtures, but could be rested
City mids - rotation potentially looming, nailing he points scorer
Chelsea - good form, haz expensive, Willian and Pedro not necessarily nailed
Liverpool - form, nonsoubles and rotation potential.

This is all on the basis of Power 5.

To allow a nice spread of funds, I'll be going with:

        Salah, Son, Willian, Mkhitaryan, Kenedy.

Strikeforce will be Vardy, Firmino, Lukaku with Kane coming in for GW36.

Kenedy will be important in GW32 and GW36 (HUD, WBA)

Alternative view: he’s had a long standing niggle which means he’s been rested in the league. He’s missed international duty to get it fixed. If it’s fixed it’s no longer an issue and therefore doesn’t impact his game time?

It's possible, its also very optimistic. Wenger knows that 4th is long gone and is going all out for the Europa League he will make sure his best team is fresh and available for those Thursday night games. Unless they crash out before gw34 then I think any Arsenal players bar Cech and Aubameyang are a risk that just isn't worth taking.

I'm not saying they are going to down tools but the priorities are 1. Europa 2.Premier League. Wenger has already shown he wants his best team available for priority 1- Ramsey hasn't even been in the squad for 2 prem games prior to the Europa! Arsene wants a trophy so he can justify staying another 10 years; he won't get one for securing 6th place.

7th Will get europa unless Southampton beat Chelsea in the cup semi final. But I think Arsenal will get 6th anyway without even trying.

Wenger has already come out and said that the europa is the priority aswell. Ramsey is a great player and well priced but the time to get him was the first half the season. This isn't the time imo when there are many similarly priced players in great form and more likely to play - Willian being one.

I was banging on about this yesterday too but seeing as there's now a HT ... I don't think Son will make my my team. The fixtures don't suit him in the short term and then Kane will be back. He didn't look that explosive oop against Swansea anyway. Even including his BOU haul his away stats are shocking and the home game is against City.

On which note, I've kept Sterling but might swap to Silva to afford a power-5. Sterling has more points potential when he plays but I think will be more prone to rotation than Silva, and Silva love away games, so that TOT fixture (when he'll surely play) looks fine. It's all about assuredness of starts for me generally - who will play both games in a double? Not sure on Raheem, although letting him go is gonna be painful as I got him at 7.9.

If Arsenal were out of Europe as usual, I would highly recommend Wilshere. Great value for money, especially in games where he's given the freedom to roam forward or play number 10. If Wenger were to signal that Wilshere would be prioritised as the main creative spark for the PL games, then I would get him back in on my WC next GW, but that's rather unlikely since he's easily part of Arsenal's best XI for their European matches.

He would make a great fifth mid to share duties with your third striker, giving you tons of cash to splash everywhere else. Unfortunately, he's might just not be an option at all.

One of the advantages of waiting an extra GW to WC, though, is that information like this can completely change your set-up. A great value cheap midfielder (or great value seemingly emerging from anywhere) can almost force you to overhaul your team for the better to change WC/FH/TC strategy completely.

And yes I'm aware of Wilshere's terrible point history this season. I owned him for his recent 1PPG or whatever it was.

Although not sure I'd want to lock in a Swa mid.

I'm very confusing...i'm not sure if the best solution is 2 forwards big, or 3.
        For example:

        with 3:

        De Gea - Fabianski
Ward - christensen - mawson- Davies - robertson
        Salah - Sterling - Son - mcarthur - gross
        Lukaku - Aubameyang- Firmino

        With 2:

        De Gea - Fabianski
        Ward - christensen - Otamendi - Davies - robertson
        Salah - Sterling - Son - choupo-moting/other - Willian
        Lukaku - barnes - Firmino

In the first case i have 3 good forwards, but i lost one midfielder and the defence is very downgraded.
In the second case i have good defence 4 midfielder top, two forwards big.

        what is the best choice?

No. I didn't use the FH, waiting for later. I may have if I wasn't confident in a Liverpool haul.

I don't get it? Every semi-serious player had Salah for GW31 so it didn't matter if he got 30 points or 1 point?

        4. Swanremainsthesame
          • 9 Years

          Why would it.
I doubt many who played FH didn't already have Salah, or couldnt bring him in without FH so makes no difference.

Taking myself as an example my FH gained me Tosun,Tomkins,Mane,Stanislas plus 4 more playing for 10, total about 50 points that if I hadn't.

          Quite happy with that.

I scored 96 no FH. I see it that on average I scored less than 10 fewer than FH, my nearest competitor only gained 6 with FH.

It boils down to whether you were daft enough to Salah-less or not captain him in light of his ongoing excellence.

I am pretty certain my FH will gain me more given that there are more appealing fixtures to use it on.

This is my current WC team, seems very template. I need to free up 0.3 to switch Kenedy to Ki, any ideas?

        DDG
        Smalling, Monreal, Lowton
        Salah, Son, Willian, Mahrez
        Auba, Lukaku, Vardy

        Fab, Kenedy, Chilwell, VDH

Monreal will probably be rotated because of EL

Smalling isn't guaranteed to keep starting with Rojo and Jones back.

prefer Morgan to Chilwell for guaranteed starts as well.

        DDG Fab
        Alonso Lowton Morgan Dunk VDH
        Willian Son Salah Mahrez Kenedy

kenedy double fixtures are awful, why not for for king and upgrade ryan to fab / vdh to naughton ? also barnes wont have 2 dgw fixtures . just my thoughts 🙂

            That's not actually template

If you are going for cheap 5th mid then you would expect to be able to have 3 good strikers (i.e. Lukaku, Auba, Firmino/Vardy)

I think your defence is too expensive - maybe downgrade Monreal and Smalling. Neither will be nailed for all league matches

          3. MTPockets
              6 years, 7 months ago

Barnes/Kenedy don't have 2nd double, so probably locks in another transfer or two.

Is Joe Hart the Perfect 2nd Goalkeeper in the Wildcard to partner DDG?

            Pros:

            Will have 1 DGW
4.2m (enables us to afford DDG and the likes of Alonso potentially by saving 0.5 on Fabianski)
            Potential Save Points
Home Fixture against Stoke in what is potentially a DGW in 34
            Nostalgia Pick

            Cons:

Other DGW Fixture against Man United
Who is the number 1 Keeper at West Ham (Joe Hart returned to the lineup last week, has he potentially had a word and requested game time in order to try and cement a place as England's Number 1? Will he keep his place or will Adrian return to the lineup?
