Scout Scribbles – Gudmundsson Concern for Clarets

The rigours of the international break cause worries over a key Burnley asset and a well-owned Liverpool defender. Elsewhere, options grow in Man United’s backline, and there’s a striking boost for Stoke City.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (5.1) has been catching the eye of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers on Wildcards thanks to a set of recent returns and his price tag as an enabler.

A goal and two assists over the last five Gameweeks – and two and seven respectively for the season – has helped his ownership double to a still modest 1.7%.

And with an equally solid schedule (wba wat LEI & CHE), a Gameweek 35 fixture (away at Stoke City) and a run-in that also includes home matches with Brighton and Bournemouth, close to 14,000 have already brought him in over the break.

But the winger was withdrawn on 73 minutes for Iceland in their 3-1 defeat to Peru in New Jersey early on Wednesday morning, with initial (and unconfirmed) reports suggesting his withdrawal might not have been tactical.

Those with Gudmundsson in their squads will now have to wait for an official update from Sean Dyche later today.

Robertson’s Scottish setback

Similar reports have surfaced regarding Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson.

Owned by 7.6%, the left-back suffered a knock for Scotland and was subbed off after 67 minutes of their 1-0 away win over Hungary on Tuesday.

Robertson’s ownership has quadrupled since Gameweek 20, and only Roberto Firmino is proving more popular among Reds players in the Gameweek 32 transfer market.

A trip to Crystal Palace awaits this weekend and we’d hope for official confirmation as to the extent of any issue for Robertson via Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference.

Unlike Gudmundsson, though, the lack of a Double Gameweek has diminished Robertson’s appeal, with Mohamed Salah the only Liverpool player likely to remain in our Wildcard plans for the run-in.

Striker boost for Stoke

One conference that’s already happened brought generally positive news from Stoke City manager Paul Lambert.

The Potters travel to Arsenal on Sunday and Lambert will have Mame Biram Diouf available following a successful run-out for Senegal on Tuesday.

Stoke have been forced to make do and mend up front in recent weeks, with midfielder Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting asked to play the lone striker role on more than one occasion.

Lambert has now confirmed that the Cameroon international will be out for several weeks with a groin injury suffered when scoring in the 2-1 defeat to Everton in Gameweek 30, so Diouf’s return is decidedly timely.

Meanwhile, defender Erik Pieters is back in the squad following an internal dispute.

Young a doubt

Man United’s Ashley Young was yet another player to pick up an issue on international duty.

The England wing-back played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Italy, but then returned to his club with a knock.

He will be assessed for United ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Swansea City just as he was being considered as a cheap (4.9) midfield enabler for Wildcard managers now that he seems to have cemented his role as left-back under Jose Mourinho, starting six of the last seven Gameweeks.

But if the injury proves to be more serious, he could give way to the embattled Luke Shaw against the Swans, although the fit-again Marcos Rojo is also an option after he played the full 90 minutes for Argentina in their 6-1 drubbing by Spain.

Rojo has not figured for United since a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in early February, and his return could have repercussions across the backline, threatening Chris Smalling’s security of starts at centre-half in particular.

The England international has missed just three matches since Gameweek 7 and is second only to Romelu Lukaku for transfers-in among United players this week.

But it’s not just Rojo who could replace Smalling in the starting XI, with ESPN claiming that Phil Jones has returned to training after a two-month absence with what is reported as a hamstring problem.

Yoshida option Saints

Southampton’s Maya Yoshida (4.6) is another centre-half in the frame for a return after missing four matches with a knee injury.

He was on the bench for the Saints’ FA Cup quarter-final win over Wigan Athletic ten days ago and skipped international duty with Japan to rebuild his fitness for the club’s league vital run-in and cup semi-final with Chelsea.

Investment in Southampton centre-backs has not exactly been a prosperous move recently – Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt have played the last 11 matches and have kept just one clean sheet in that time.

But two Double Gameweeks, the return of Yoshida and the positive impact of new manager Mark Hughes might persuade a few brave souls to take a punt on a Saints defender.

Stephens, at 4.5, is currently the most popular Southampton signing heading into Gameweek 32, just pipping budget goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (4.4).

I could but I don’t have a WC but do have FH. Ideally focusing on players that have double DGWs and then FH GW35 then BB GW37. Don’t want Aubameyang to then have to spend a transfer removing him again. Makes sense right?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Southampton and Newcastle options

Two teams we ran out of time to discuss on the Scoutcast were Southampton and Newcastle.

Thought it would be good to gauge opinion of these two sources of budget enablers.

For those bench boosting in the expected DGWK 37 these pair of sides look to offer some intruguing budget options. Kenedy for Newcastle looks very kindly priced. Gayle could also be an interesting cheap striker and at the back Lascelles could bring owners a clean sheet or two, or even a goal.

Southampton are under new management and could prosper as a result? But which options if any appeal? Charlie Austin perhaps? Or will Yoshida win his place back? Southamptn have a double double on the horizon which makes them a potentially important team for those with their bench boost intact.

As a FH34 BB37, Dubravka, Dummett and Kenedy provides tremendous value for me.

Not just about gw37 though - would happily play them in a number of fixtures - and can provide decent coverage off the bench if my other players suffer rotation.

Yep. And fielding Dubravka against HUD gw32 rotates with Lloris. Kenedy as 5th mid and for bb37 seems much better idea than gw34 bb assets like Gudmundsson. And according to bookies anytime goalscorer odds he is even better option to field this week than Willian.

Im not 100% convinced by Newcastle’s fixtures during “DGW37” although in saying that I already own Dummett and will likely keep him as it’s one less transfer I need when using BB in GW37. Southampton’s fixtures are a lot kinder and if Austin is declared fit and firing he will be in everyone’s team I imagine.

Southampton: virtually none until Chaz has played 60mins.

Newcastle: Kenedy is worth his weight in gold imo. As 11th man he should be able to compete with the likes of Gross and Murray who surely will be backer in the byweeks by those BB'ing in 34. And hey, dig this, he's 1.3 cheaper.

Gayle looks somewhat tasty, but with the threat of Slimani, I would'nt be surprised if Rafa hands him the bench a couple of times during the run in.

Lascelles look like the clearcut option if your idea is 2 good defenders and rotating the 3 others. This is ofcourse due to his threat on set pieces. If your just looking to play your NUFC-defender in BB37 I'd go Dummet. That 0.6 is worth putting elsewhere if your only holding two Lascelles set piece lottery tickets.

Newcastle have more options - Kenedy, Lacelles, Dummett look great value - but the way fixtures fall it's this weekend and the double in 37 that look best. So for those BB in 37 I'd be getting one of them in.

As I'm WCing now, BB in 34 and TC in 37 Southampton have to be considered for 5th defender option. Stephens vs Cedric. Burned so many times by the diminutive right back, may have to be Stephens - slightly less nailed, but goal threat and cheaper. Will probably only play on BB and maybe 36.

    15. GeordieRacer
      • 8 Years

Rafa likes to rotate, so with Newcastle you have to be careful. That said, he does have his favourites and Dubravka, Lascelles and Dummett will play every game if fit. They are probably the only players who will fit into that category. Kenedy is playing very well, and will play most games, but Rafa likes to rotate his midfield and I wouldn't guarantee he'll play twice in a double gameweek. Once Slimani is fit, he will play, which means Gayle and Joselu aren't likely to feature much since Rafa favours one up front.

"Jóhann left 20 minutes before the injury due to injury, but in a conversation with football.net after the game he almost said he had already recovered. Jóhann is on his way back to England and could possibly play with Burnley against WBA on Saturday in the Premiership.

"I just hit the knee and got better now. Hopefully this will be all right. This has become good now, so I think it will be pretty good, "said Jóhann at football.net"

Word by word reports of foreign players’ statements are pretty racist, we all know why it’s done.

    Thoughts on this defence?

    Lloris Ryan
    Alonso Bailly Mustafi Tarkowski Morgan

Mustafi will become either Smalling or Jones come Gw34.
Depending upon who looks more nailed.

Even Ederson might be rotated with Bravo. The scoutcast guys mentioned how Bravo needs a few more apperences to get a PL medal so once the title is wrapped up they will literally play anyone and there is no guessing

In which case, we will have a better idea whether he will play in the last few PL matches by GW36.

Anyhow, I hope Liverpool beat Man City in the CL! Will make FPL life much easier!

After a few changes this morning I'm currently on this WC team:

    DDG - McCarthy
    Alonso - Vertongen - Fernandez - Lowton - Morgan
    Salah - Mahrez - Son - Willian - King
    Lukaku - Auba - Murray

I'm BB in GW34 and will only have 11 DGWs but I think getting the Swansea assets in now will be more beneficial for GW37 and avoiding hits. Swansea have decent fixture in GW34 anyway so would rather get them now than more Burnley or Brighton and have to get rid for GW37. I'm also FH in 35. Would appreciate your thoughts on this

this 'ball tampering' Cricket scandal is a disgrace. its clearly been concocted by those running the game to make the sport seem
more exciting. and unfortunately for Smith he's the fall guy.

What on earth have you been reading?

The guy responsible is David Dumb Dumb Warner.

This Aussie cricket team are the biggest bunch of losers out there. They think they are above the law but the reality is that play the game that is far removed from the spirit of cricket.

Right now, if I bumped into an Aussie I would smash his fecking lights out. Fecking cheats the lot of them.

    I am planning to use
