Watchlist Update – Wolves defensive options climb rankings

We have updated the Watchlist after the important events of Gameweek 5.

There is a sizeable shift in the prospects of some goalkeepers, while the best budget defenders are still a little tricky to pin down.

We’ve gone over the changes we’ve made to those sections in this article, with midfielders and forwards to come later in the week.

Goalkeepers

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson (£5.6m) stays top of our Watchlist for now. The Brazilian registered his third return of the season against Fulham in Gameweek 5 and still has decent fixtures coming up. It’s a trip to Cardiff up next before Brighton come to the Etihad Stadium. Given his form and fixtures, he represents the best option among the premium ‘set and forgets’.

Alisson (£5.6m) stays second on our list although does lose the Unfavourable Fixtures factor with the Tottenham Hotspur clash out of the way. While Chelsea (away) and Man City (home) are still to come, those matches are bookended by Southampton (home) and Huddersfield (away). Liverpool remain the best side in the league for big chances conceded, and they were close to collecting a clean sheet at Wembley.

The headline riser from the goalkeeping department is Wolves man Rui Patricio (£4.5m), could be a potential bargain. He has climbed all the way to third after keeping back-to-back clean sheets. The reigning Championship title-winners have looked very organised at the back this season and rank very well for big chances allowed. A tough trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 6 is not too appealing but after that, there are four very favourable fixtures against Southampton (home), Crystal Palace (away), Watford (home) and Brighton (away).

Premium options David de Gea (£5.9m) and Kepa (£5.5m) are up next. The Manchester United man is in worse form but has better fixtures looking ahead, although the Chelsea custodian has collected more points in 2018/19.

The return of James Tomkins to the Crystal Palace starting XI boosts Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) and sees him climb up to sixth place. The Eagles now have two clean sheets this season and have favourable fixtures on the horizon. Hennessey has already saved one penalty and has earned additional save points in all but one match. His rise up the list, combined with Patricio’s causes Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) to drop down.

Our new entry is Joe Hart (£4.5m) who creeps onto the list having made more saves than any other goalkeeper so far. Burnley have just one clean sheet this season but they face Cardiff (away) and Huddersfield (home) in their next three matches.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Petr Cech (£5.0m) complete the goalkeeper contingent based on their fixtures, although both are in pretty poor form. The Leicester man sits above Cech considering slightly more favourable matches as well as being more assured of a start, with Bernd Leno (£4.8m) still waiting in the Arsenal wings. Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) drops off the Watchlist this week with Southampton’s fixtures turning incredible sour.

Defenders

Despite losing the Favourable Fixtures factor and blanking in Gameweek 5, Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) stays top of the pile for defenders. The fact that has registered returns in four of the first five weeks show shows his quality. With Liverpool and Man United to come in the next four weeks, it’s hard to say his fixtures are appealing. But those matches are offset by trips to West Ham and Southampton.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.5m) keeps his fixtures factor but stays below Alonso on account of the doubt around his place in the side for Gameweek 6. He reportedly has a minor injury but the performance of Fabian Delph against Fulham could indicate a rotation risk once the Champions League gets up and running. That said, we can’t take anything away from his form.

Like Alisson, Andrew Robertson (£6.2m) loses the Unfavourable Fixtures factor with Spurs out of the way. However, with Chelsea and Man City still to come he can’t be rewarded with the Favourable Fixtures factor.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m) and Matt Doherty (£4.4m) come in as the most appealing budget options. The former has a great set of fixtures and stands to collect clean sheet points while the Wolves man is showing great attacking potential, also with an attractive run of matches after Man United in Gameweek 6.

Watford defender Jose Holebas (£4.8m) keeps his budget tag for now, even though he has risen to £4.8m. That’s because he can still offer a direct route into virtually every Watford set piece apart from penalties. A blank against Man United is not enough to remove his A for form.

Another set piece orientated defender is Spurs right-back Kieran Trippier (£6.0m). He is on corners and free-kicks and now has a very favourable run of games against Brighton (away), Huddersfield (away) and Cardiff (home). However, knowing Mauricio Pochettino as we do, Trippier has to retain the rotation risk factor.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) loses his injury after Jose Mourinho revealed last week that he had recovered from the concussion suffered on England duty. We can’t bring ourselves to put a rotation risk on him just as Ashley Young‘s (£5.8m) appearance against Watford at the moment can be put down to Shaw missing the training for Gameweek 5 rather than a tactical choice. More weeks of both players being available will tell us more about the Man United left-back spot.

Ricardo Pereira (£5.1m) and Steve Cook (£4.6m) round off the defence section of the Watchlist. Both players have favourable fixtures upcoming but have struggled to pull in clean sheets thus far. Pereira’s advanced positioning and three assists suggest he has potential, while Cook is a threat from set pieces.

Shkodran Mustafi (£5.4m) comes off the Watchlist altogether. Arsenal have registered no clean sheets so far this season in spite of favourable fixtures. Anyone who wants to cover their defence while their appealing run of matches continues could turn to the much cheaper Cech.

Really stuck here on what to do.

    Patricio.
    Mendy, Alonso, Robertson, Wan-Bissaka.
    Mane, Walcott, Salah, Bilva.
    Aguero, Mitrovic.
    Foster, Ings, Peltier, CHO.
2 ft, 0.3m in the bank. WC at the ready.

    Thinking one of these.
    1. Wally-> Rich and save other FT.
    2. Wally/ Mane-> Haz/Fraser.
    3. Wally/ Bilva-> Moura/Maddison (short term picks before WC).

Looks like a good player but has no end product so far so maybe not for FPL. Also gets subbed of for Traore every game and could get dropped for him sooner or later

2FT and 0.4 ITB and haven't got a clue what to do......

    Patricio / Hamer
    Alonso / Mendy / VVD / Shaw / AWB
    Salah / Bilva / Hazard / Neves / Stephens
    Aguero / Mitrovic / Ings

A: Shaw > Doherty and Hamer > Hennessey (Pat & Hen rotate really well)
B: Bilva > Richarlison and Neves > Fraser
    C: Anything different??

The gks are fine. The D is fine. Milfs are fine. Fwds are fine.
Unless there is a long term injury I would do:

Hamer->Hennesy (you may 0.1 short alas)
      Stephens->Ward - a 4.5 oop at CAR.

You may as well change up Stephens for Ward then esp if we need a bench with rotation now kicking in.

Don't think he will be getting another 18 point haul, but with Bournemouth's fixtures and his form I'd expect him to get decent returns for a little while. Probably one of the best value for money picks in the game

    Patricio
    Mendy Holebas Alonso
    Salah Hazard Fraser Richarlison
    Aguero Mitrovic Zaha

    (Hamar, AWB, Doherty, Obiang)

    ITB 0.1

If Salah blanks il get rid most probably.

Looks good, I like the Obiang pick even if it is to be your 3rd sub every week. He looked really good against Everton and if he keeps his place could be the best 4.5 and under midfielder

Yes I watched that game and he played very well and surprisingly was quite advanced and with Wilshere out he should get plenty of minutes.

Yeah with Wilshere out for a while looks like he'll be playing the furthest forward unless the formation gets changed so should be good in the short term at least

    2. Jafalad
      • 14 Years
      6 years, 1 month ago

I'd want a decent 4.5 gk rot if I was on wildcard. Pat and Henn look quite good.
Holebas will regress and is a card magnet. I believe we have missed the boat on him.
A good team though - no Mane a little concerning.

      1. Snipez21
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I’m concerned we have missed the boat but really unsure who I can bring in or downgrade to upgrade.

If Salah is unimpressive again il swap him out for Mane over the coming weeks, or would you take Mane over Salah now even with the Southampton fixture?

        1. Jafalad
          • 14 Years
          6 years, 1 month ago

Would never lose Salah - esp what happened last year. The player is a ff machine.

Obiang could be Ward too, an OOP playing upfront 4.5.

Salah should've been priced at 12.0 at the very most imo! Won't go as far as one season wonder, he'll still score well, but he's not worth 12.0 atm let alone 13.0.
The captaincy arguement doesnt really wash either with Aguero, Mane and Hazard doing so well so far. Lukaku could also prove a more consistent captaincy choice than Salah in the future with the form he has been showing combined with his nailedness.
He's not the only one of course, Kane also looking a bit overpriced atm. But at least Kane had done it for a few seasons in the EPL unlike Mo!
I can see many managers complaining at the end of the season, that they held onto Salah for far too long! Time will tell on that one though 😉

Owning Salah isn’t an issue as long as you have Hazard too, but if you don’t then it doesn’t take a genius to work out Hazard is a better pick at the moment

Im in the MoSalah camp, but I suspect the reason Im here is cuz I can't really see how I could use the extra cash. The rest of my team looks okay imo, nothing I would change bar Bellerin, and I already have money ITB and FT to transfer him out if necessary.

Exactly, the cheap FWDs and MIDs are really performing better than many of the premiums. So no, nothing I'd change as of now.

Picking squads is all about personal choice and opinion. Salah choice was so affordable last year it seemed sensible to have him. This year it’s still about choice. I chose Mane +3.5 and am surprised he has outscored Salah so far. I hope Salah gets it back together and I hope to own him later in season when my Team value increases. If I had him, then I’d probably keep in hope he gets back to his best and only sell if on a wildcard, to build a new team to speead the cash. But it’s all about opinion and choice. We have to make up our own minds.

Yup, def all about choice mate, but it's a simple fact that he's not worth 13.0! He doesnt have to be worth the pricetag to own him of course, GL!

Agree. Owe awesome season ain’t getting you into my team when taking up 13% of my budget. Once I have more team value / buying power and he calculates at about 9% of my budget and he starts to return double digits then he will be invited into my squad.

Ha ha . Shocking maths. He’ll never go below 11.5% of my budget. Even by Gw35 and my buying budget is 108m and Salah was 12.5.... he would still be 11.57% of my budget.

I was stubborn and kept ignoring him, figuring he'd shot his wad last season.Bad choice repeatedly. He was the first I got in this season, and I'm gonna keep him until the 2 guys ahead of me dump him. I started with both Salah and Mane so I'll be covered in theory.

I was very late getting his last season also and regretted, this season is totally different though as I can see myself going the whole seaon without him (of course that could all change haha)

Agree he is overpriced. Many people think he is essential but that extra 3m for me is the deciding factor

As a trio, SFM scored 630 points last season. Mane got injured and played 10 games less and Salah had more freedom. Now he is getting a lot more attention and perhaps he's looking for his teammates a little more so far this season.

I'm expecting him to get going shortly, however, for ~200 points each i'd rather spend 10m instead of 13m and invest elsewhere.

Each to their own of course.........

Yup, and if Mane stays fit that's more points shared with/taken away from Salah and from the eye test Mane has been looking every bit as dangerous as Salah thus far

    Anything worth a hit?
    Begovic - Ryan
    Alonso - Robertson - Mendy - WB - Bennett
    Hazard - Mane - Moura - Mili - Cairney
    Aguero - King - Tosun

    0.7 ITB

Want to get rid of Mili, Tosun and eventually Cairney but not sure if anything is worth a hit (and if so who to bring in).

    Guys, a newbie question.
If i am on -4 now, can i use WC at the end of the week to prevent any deduction ?
If the answer is yes and i am probably going to use wildcard, i should -8 and get rid of Salah and hope that he drops before i wc and get him back in. Correct play ?

I strongly considering doing Mane to Hazard for free.

I own Salah and VVD & Pedro.

Can anyone give me a compelling reason not to do this?

My main reason being iI'd like to spread the risk away from two pool attackers. I'd also more likely captain Hazard over Mane.

    Thanks lads

There is a huge mismatch in "transfer ins" of Hazard and "transfer outs" of Salah. So how are people actually getting Hazard in? Whom are they sacrificing?

      See midfield trend display. http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/Home/RelationshipMB?dts=M

Seems either downgrading Salah or upgrading Neves or Kante or other’s. Thus likely downgrading elsewhere too (like an Aguero to mid priced forward)

Maddison has been pretty good last 2 games whereas Everton have been poor.
Leicester have a much better fixture this week and also better fixtures long term. Just leaning towards Maddison.

But I’m not discounting Richarlison I think he will also come good but just want to see Everton for 1-2 matches. Might not both in a couple of weeks.

Pickford,Aubameyang,B.Silva. Which one will you remove together with hughes(watford)? Im thinking aubameyang but everton defence is so vulnerable and might be a high scoring games but there are so many budget striker that cant be overlooked. Any thought? Thinking to bring in richarlison and mitrovic
