The Scout Squad – FPL Gameweek 11

The Scout Squad panel are back to offer their long-list of candidates to be considered for our regular Scout Picks selection on Friday afternoon.

The 72 nominations will be whittled down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding £83m and no club represented by more than three players) ahead of the Gameweek 11 deadline at 11:30 GMT on Saturday.

Our three in-house regulars – Az, Joe and Paul – are joined again this week by Peter Kouwenberg, who has three top 500 finishes to his name.

Gameweek 10 saw only two players receive four nominations but there is more unanimity this week, with nine players being backed across the board.

Intriguingly, each member of our panel has gone for a different Manchester City midfielder.

Pep Guardiola’s side and Watford are the only two clubs to have a player nominated in each of the four positions.

With the likes of Marcos Alonso, Benjamin Mendy, Eden Hazard, Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero very strong candidates to be included in our final Scout Picks, budget buys such as Lukasz Fabianski, Fabian Balbuena, Kiko Femenia and Isaac Success might well be called upon to ensure we finish under budget.

Along with a list of usual Scout Squad contenders, I’ve gone for Kevin De Bruyne as my preferred Manchester City midfielder.

After being eased back into action with a pair of substitute appearances, the Belgian could be set to start at home to Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

De Bruyne has an incredible record in meetings with the Saints, too.

He has been involved in eight of the nine league goals Man City have scored against them while he has been on the pitch.

That has led to two goals and six assists over five outings.

At the other end of the price bracket, Watford’s trip to Newcastle could deliver some intriguing differentials this week.

Kiko Femenia and Isaac Success offer in-form picks in defence and attack.

At £4.2m, Femenia has 18 points in the last two Gameweeks, thanks to two clean sheets and an assist.

Another shutout looks on the cards, too, as the Magpies have failed to score in four of their previous five league outings.

Success has the numbers to make a mockery of his £4.5m price tag at St James’ Park.

On the scoresheet in last weekend’s win over Huddersfield, the Nigerian has impressed since securing a starting role in Gameweek 9.

His totals of five shots and four chances created both rank among the top five forwards in the last two rounds of fixtures.

This week looks perfect for bargain hunters, with plenty of cheap options having favourable matches.

West Ham assets look particular appetising for frugal managers ahead of Burnley’s visit. I’m hoping at least one of Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) or defender Fabian Balbeuna (£4.4m) makes the cut.

Both have started every league match and offer additional points aside from just clean sheets, with the Polish stopper earning save points in all but one of his games and the Paraguayan international scoring last time out.

Up front for the Hammers, Marko Arnautovic also offers value at £7.0m, despite missing Gameweek 10 through illness. With 12 shots – eight from close range – over his last three starts, he looks primed for points against the Clarets. No side has conceded more shots away from home than Sean Dyche’s troops.

I’ve also included Watford’s £4.5m striker Isaac Success Ajayi as a possible enabler should we need to free up funds. He also scored in Gameweek 10 and should earn a start away to Newcastle if Troy Deeney fails to recover from injury.

Everton’s well-priced rearguard should also be represented, with stopper Jordan Pickford and full-back Lucas Digne my favoured options. Visitors Brighton have the worst away record in terms of shots and only Liverpool and Manchester City have conceded fewer goal attempts at home than the Toffees.

Such savings will be needed to squeeze in a wealth of premium picks this week, with Sergio Aguero and Benjamin Mendy looking shoo-ins for Southampton’s visit.

Eden Hazard, if fit, at home to Crystal Palace looks impossible to ignore, as does a rampant Mohamed Salah, whose Liverpool side travel to Arsenal. Over the last four Gameweeks, only Burnley have shipped more big chances than the Gunners.

My frustrating FPL week pales in comparison to what went on at the weekend, with such a tragic loss of life for all those involved in the Leicester helicopter crash. RIP Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Eric Swaffer, Izabela Roza Lechowicz, Nursara Suknamai, and Kaveporn Punpare.

On to more trivial things. Gameweek 10 was a tricky one to navigate, but Gameweek 11 looks more straightforward with Chelsea and Manchester City both having excellent fixtures, and West Ham United and Everton also having strong-looking home ties. It’s made my decisions a lot easier as I’ve picked a core group of players from these sides.

I lost Jordan Pickford from my own side in Gameweek 7 and he has gone on to score 34 points in four games: to say I am bitter is an understatement. Everton look to be slowly improving, despite their result against Manchester United, and I can see a win here – although Brighton off the back of three consecutive wins and clean sheets may make it a bit tricky. I fancy Gylfi Sigurdsson to carry on his good run, however, as he continues to make a case for inclusion over Richarlison. I did that at the start of the season and that too has conspired against me, as things look to have shifted back.

I’ve gone expensive in defence as the “RAM” continues to flatten all in its path. Picking between Benjamin Mendy and Marcos Alonso for top spot was tough this week – Mendy was poor on Monday night and Alonso finally delivered some attacking returns against Burnley – but in the end, I’ve chosen Mendy and I’d be amazed if he didn’t make the final picks. He has not blanked once all season when he’s played, which is incredible.

In midfield, there is nothing too exciting. Eden Hazard looks set to be unleashed against Crystal Palace, Mohamed Salah goes up against an Arsenal side who have conceded more chances than Cardiff City, and Raheem Sterling, if he plays, looks a fantastic shout against Southampton.

Up front, Sergio Aguero has the fixture and even with limited minutes should wreak some havoc. Marko Arnautovic should shake his illness bug and is a viable captaincy option this week if you are worried about Hazard’s back and Aguero’s game time.

I’m hoping Jamie Vardy and the whole Leicester City team overcome the emotion of their trip to Cardiff and get a big win here. I’m also amazed there is talk of selling Bournemouth assets, as they have been incredible this season. I don’t think there is a chance that Manchester United keep them out – hence the Callum Wilson pick.

With the exceptions of the Etihad and Stamford Bridge juggernauts, there are some tricky ties to call this week. Having listed some familiar faces from the Sky Blues and the Blues above, my remaining selections require somewhat more justification.

Historically, clashes between Liverpool and Arsenal are high-scoring affairs, but a similar historical pattern was challenged by the recent goalless draw between the Reds and Manchester City. In any event, I can’t resist Mohamed Salah, despite Arsenal’s excellent recent home record.

Analysing recent home and away defensive and offensive team form throws up interesting options. Wolves have been fairly resilient having conceded just three goals in their last four home fixtures, a figure matched by their visitors, Spurs, on their recent travels.

No other defender can match Kieran Trippier’s nine chances created in his last four matches, whilst Matt Doherty has fired off the same number of attempts himself. Both players, then, could contribute if there is any breach of their opponent’s robust defence on Saturday night.

The team statistics also suggest that the Magpies may struggle to trouble the Hornets, whilst the Hammers have a decent chance of shutting out the Clarets, as reflected by my goalkeeping choices from those games. No doubt Fabian Balbuena will also be a popular choice to repeat last week’s goalscoring feats, although he just misses out on my shortlist.

Instead, I’ve gone with Lucas Digne, who has created six opportunities and fired off five efforts of his own in the last four matches and whose Everton side welcomes a Brighton team which boasts only three goals on the road all season. Sadly for the Seagulls, I foresee goals at the other end too and Gylfi Sigurdsson – on penalties and with 14 chances created in his last four matches, albeit only one big chance – seems poised to profit.

My final midfield slot was between the creativity of James Maddison and the goal threat of Roberto Pereyra but I’ve plumped for the Argentinian, allowing me to “cover” the Foxes’ attack with Jamie Vardy. Cardiff City have conceded an average of three goals a game in their last four home matches and I anticipate that the England man will be restored to the starting line-up for an emotive fixture following the tragic events of last Saturday.

The Community Champion

Last week’s champion, fclackless, thrashed our Scout Picks 77-44 with his line-up of Foster (9); Holebas (0), Lovren (2), Bertrand (6); Salah (15), Sterling (6), Martial (9), Mane (15); King (0), Lacazette (2), Wilson (13).

fclackless‘s winning margin of 33 points is, unsurprisingly, now the target to beat.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

You captaining Kun (SOT) or Hazard (CPA) this weekend and why?

I'm going Kun due to the number of shots Southampton concede in the box.

This one is tough Southampton let in 3 against Chels and pool so Augero could have his boots filled but he gets taken off at 60mins (need to see team sheet tonight)

Palace will get beat - if hazard is part of the goals he'll get baps

OK, so I live in Melbourne and it's almost 23.30 here. I've had a few beers on a Thursday night and now the wife has gone to bed. I just wanted to say I wouldn't know what to do with nine months of my year if I didn't have FPL. I'd probably be much more productive at work and put my half-arsed brain into a gig like share trading or something ridiculously unrewarding like that. Who would've thought FPL would become my life....

Huddersfield have played 5 home games this season against Chelsea, Cardiff, Crystal Palace,Spurs & Liverpool. Three top six sides included in that.

      They've conceded 7 goals - 1.4 goals per game.

Don't really like Mitrovic's chances. Tempted to do Mitro - Arnie for -4.

Jeez that's a tough one. I'd got Arnie - did he play mid-week? I just saw a comment about that. The thing is, is that Arnie seems like he's got a goal in him and Mitro doesn't. But you need bonus to really justify if it's only one goal. Real fence sitter. Must be helpful. I'd probably do it.

I might need to take another -4 next week again (-8 if I wait a week on Mitro to Arnie), still undecided on that one. Just thinking if Arnie can gain 4 points on Mitro this weekend, it will have saved me one hit.

Having both Fraser and Barkley with nothing in the bank could leave you a little stuck in future weeks, as if you want to get rid, there aren't many alternatives for their price.

        Bench is fine.

I'd personally downgrade a defender to free up a little more cash for midfield. If you got Rudiger instead of Alonso, you'd have a spare million. You could keep Barkley and Fraser this week, but you'll be easily able to dump one for someone like Maddison in future

Probably downgrading Alonso as I need to save another million if Hazard is fit.

Who's the best sub 6m defender?

      A) Rudiger (5.9)

      C) Laporte (5.8) - already have Mendy

The tricky thing is, I need 0.7 more to get in Hazard (very annoyed with myself I didn't get him earlier, but I thought his numbers weren't sustainable).

Can you see a better way to squeeze out 0.7?

          Fabianski, Foster

          Alonso, Mendy, TAA, Doherty, AWB

Gotta say I agree with above. TAA likely won't even start the next game, and unlikely to get a clean sheet even if he does - also doubling up on West Ham isn't such a bad idea considering their run of fixtures, and you can rotate Balbuena with Doherty also.

Alternatively you could do Maddison to Barkley

      Not sure what to do:

      Patricio - Cech

      Alonso - Robetson - Doherty - Schlupp - Peltier

      Salah - Ozil - Maddison - Fraser - Jorginho

      Aguero - Wilson - Mitrovic

      I'm thinking:
      A) Cech > Fabianski
      B) Take a hit and lose Ozil for another Chelsea or City midfielder
      C) Keep Ozil, swap for Mane for the Fulham game and swap Mitrovic > Arnie

      1. Any Laporte in a Storm
        • 15 Years

What's Jorginho doing for you points wise? I would have guessed, bugger all. Him and Ozil. Him first. Mane or Hazard need to be there. Honestly.

        1. joshphillips465
          • 10 Years

          What do you reckon on:

          OUT:
          Cech
          Ozil

          IN:
          Fabianski
          Mane

          (4 point hit)

Then next week I can deal with Schlupp > Wan-Bissaka and Jorginho to... Something that isn't Jorginho.

Only because I'll play three up top this weekend anyway with Wilson Aguero and Mitrovic so feel may as well strengthen that midfield 4 first and would mean a healthier looking GK opportunity.

Jorginho has been a pure bench warmer and I do plan to get rid but I'm getting slayed on GK points atm.

I was fooled into thinking Cech would be priority when Arsenal started this run - would've been out earlier if it weren't for injury troubles with others.

Dropping Jorginho gets me 6.3... Drop to a 4.5 then swap Ozil for Mane next week?

Take the hit for Cech > Fabs as well?

I've just re-read this team. I find it infuriating. You've got at least four years on the job and too much money in silly places in my opinion. Go for one goalie or two cheap ones. Schlupp? FFS. I think a quick rebuild.

If managers like me need to claw back some pints lost and own Sterling, I think he should be captained as he can really haul points this gw and his ownership is still low.
Personally it is my only way to sway away from my mini-league’s template and get some points off my rivals.
He might not be worth bringing Sterling in if you don’t own him yet but for us keepers I think he is definitely worth the captaincy. I don’t own Aguero anymore by the way !

Can I ask a very simple question.
Why is everyone getting Mendy in when it screws up your formation ?
I understand RAM. That is not the point.

I mean, you need to drop a very legitimate point scorer like Doherty,
Richarlison, Maddy, striker to the bench.

      Opinions welcome.

How about if you pick Ederson ? Then play the others ?

IMHO there's better value to be had from the cheaper keepers than the cheaper defenders (with the exception, thus far, of Doherty, though he won't keep it up)

Not sure he won’t keep it up. Wolves stats say otherwise.
That is why I am interested. Can Doherty and Ederson cover Mendy ?

You'll certainly get better assurance of them starting. I'd be content with those two, especially if you want a MCI midfielder.

Not necessarily - by tomorrow I will probably have RAM and all three of those you mention. Doherty has a tougher fixture this week but I don't HAVE (italics) to put any of them on the bench.

So you will drop Jimenez ? So, weak 3rd striker is key ?

Yes - that is very much on the cards - I have always liked 3-5-2, but I will play 4-4-2 on occasion, especially when Doherty has an OK fixture. Having Patricio as well has been a mixed blessing.

So Patricio will cover Doherty which allows RAM ?
Then you can get Arnie and Wilson for example with Aguero.

Yes - that's the general idea. I might change Patricio, but not Doherty while he shows these stats.

Pat to Fabs ? Play 4 at the back and upgrade a mid.
                    So the 4-4-2 ?

      Two questions.

      1. No love for 4,4m Rob Holding? Seems nailed.
      2. Wilson or Murray on wildcard?

      Thanks

        1. 4.4m is superb for a playing defender from ‘Top Six’ side. Holding started four in a row and got in to team via injured teammate. Is that nailed? I do actually think Holding will keep his place - but Sokratis hovers to try and win his place back after some small injuries.
How many clean sheets do Arsenal have in ten games ? 2
Holding has one assist in over two seasons, no goals scored averaging 1 clean sheet per 3 matches in that time. In his five appearances this season, Holding has 3x 1pt and a 2 pt.
        Up
Next in next five: Liverpool, Wolves and Spurs at home and Bournemouth and Man Utd away
So no love for Holding from me. Week 16 for a few weeks maybe.

Anyone else got this bad habit of potentially keeping players if there is a TV game on that would have no interest without - particularly Sunday and MNF when you may get a late rank boost? It really should not cloud your judgement....

Depends if your fun comes from scoring a lot of points and getting a good OR or not, that is a personal thing. Everyone has their own motivation.
