Aguero on the bench as Sterling and Sane start on the flanks for City

Manchester City take on Wolverhampton Wanderers this evening in the final match of Gameweek 22, with kick-off at the Etihad at 20:00 GMT.

Sergio Aguero has recovered from the illness that forced him to miss the 7-0 and 9-0 wins over Rotherham United and Burton Albion respectively but the Argentinean striker is only named among the substitutes this evening, as Gabriel Jesus gets the nod to lead the line.

Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane will be flanking the Brazilian tonight, while City’s midfield three of Bernardo Silva, David Silva and Fernandinho remains unchanged from the victory over Liverpool – meaning Kevin De Bruyne has to be content with a place on the bench.

Danilo gets the nod at left-back despite Fabian Delph‘s return from a three-match ban.

Nuno Espirito Santo has made two changes from the strong starting XI that defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup last Monday, with Matt Doherty and Rui Patricio replacing Ruben Vinagre and John Ruddy.

Diogo Jota is once again paired with Raul Jimenez in attack, with Joao Moutinho being deployed as the “number ten” behind Wolves’ strike pair.

Leander Dendoncker gets only his second league start of the season in central midfield.

The reverse fixture of this match ended 1-1, with Aymeric Laporte‘s header cancelling out a controversial opening goal from Willy Boly back in August.

Aguero was the fifth-most-captained FPL asset of Gameweek 22, while four Wolves’ players – Doherty, Patricio, Jimenez and Ryan Bennett – are among the nine most-benched Fantasy assets of this round of fixtures.

Sterling hasn’t scored more than six FPL points in a single game since Gameweek 14 but his season-long average of 7.1 points per match is second only to Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders.

City are the only Premier League club without a clean sheet since the start of December, while Wolves haven’t kept a shut-out on the road since Gameweek 8.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Danilo; Fernandinho, Silva, Bernardo; Sane, Sterling, Jesus.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-1-2): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Jonny, Dendoncker, Neves, Doherty; Moutinho; Jimenez, Jota.

Just had a quick look at blanks and doubles. The first obvious strat that jumps out to me is:

    In short:

    BGW27: Bench the blankers
    GW28-32: Buy DGW32 players
    BGW31: FH
    DGW32: BB/TC
    BGW33: Bench the blankers
    GW34: WC
    DGW35: BB/TC

    In long:

    1) Navigate BGW27 (with a few blankers on the bench if you like) with FTs.

    2) Then aim to start bringing in players for the DGW32 with your FTs (but avoiding too potential many BGW31 blankers).

    3) FH in BGW31 to get rid of your current blankers (loading up on Pool against Fulham).

    4) Navigate DGW32 with FTs. (Play TC chip if your bench isn't good enough for BB).

    5) Navigate BGW33 with FTs (shouldn't be too hard since I think it would only be 2 top-6 teams in the FA Cup semis at most, and you already avoided these players for BGW31).

    6) Wildcard in GW34.

    7) Play BB/TC in DGW35.

I haven't checked out Crellin's sheet or anyhing so I'm probably missing some obvious points. One benefit is that you get to play your BB and TC chips on DGWs. Another is that WCing late means you don't have to carry money on the bench for a BB for long. Even if you BB pre-WC, you can flush the wasters off the bench after bringing them in via FTs only recently. Another is that you an continue to buy the players you want from now, all the way up to until the WC in GW35, barring too many for BGW27 and BGW33, which are the smaller, more manageable blanks.

Feel free to criticise this approach, as many of you probably have more of an understanding than me at this stage.

Correction to (2): there is no need to avoid BGW31 blankers as you'd be FHing that week

Still not a bad idea to avoid overloading on them as some of those will also be blankers in 33... I think?

Does it really help to wildcard then? I’ve never kept one much past January. I like to think I’m getting the benefit for the next few months rather than just one double week at the end. Won’t you have effectively have a B team for the last 3 or 4 games of the season if you do? And aren’t a lot of the players rested for one of the games, so you end up with a load of second choices just playing once anyway? I think with 2 fts and a -8 I’ll still beat your Salahless team..

I'm too happy with my team to WC now. So you're not getting any advantage!

(except for Salah, but there's nothing stopping any other late WCer from having Salah, or from me buying Salah tonight with 2FTs!).

Don't see why I'd have a B team at the end of the season. I have chosen all 15 of my players in GW34. You haven't had the same choice.

Because you’ll have chosen yours to get the benefit of a double week, and presumably lost the good players you’ve had up to then but don’t play twice.
I’m a bit unsure about the free hit too, I took a year out last year so never used it before.

Aha but see my hot topic from last week D. I am not convinced the "wildcard to bench cost" etc strategy is all it's cracked up to be.

I can't be sure but it's possible that I even lost points with my WC/BB team last year in the double gameweek in question, let alone in the fact that I could have wildcarded months earlier and picked up more points that way. Think i got 40 points in total from an entire team of DGWers.

In contrast, my ML rival wildcarded before Christmas and got Pogba and Son, he made over 100 points on those two players.

If your team is solid like yours is and you can afford to wait then fine but for many of us we can bank the points early.

I can say I see the problem. Last season your issues were:

            "
            - The pathetic DGW score
            - The fact that the team was not then optimised at all for the final, crucial, three weeks
            - The weeks and weeks of missed opportunities to overhaul and improve my team whilst I doggedly hung on for a monster haul which did not materialise.
            "

For me, a single low scoring gameweek for one manager (or even all managers) in one season is nothing to base a decision on. It doesn't even mean that you made the wrong decision last season. Scores are variable, you may get unlucky or lucky, but you just want to give yourself the best chance.

The final three weeks may not have been optimised, but nor will the team of a non-WCer. At least with the WC you have a choice to balance the DGW team and the final weeks, rather than struggling to do either without a WC. If you BB before the WC, you won't need to put money on the bench either, but I suspect you won't need to put much money on the bench this season for a BB anyway.

The final point is exaggerated by repeating the first point, but I don't see why an early WC would stop you missing opportunities. You would be under more pressure to adhere to a specific strategy or limited balance, knowing that you don't have the WC to save you.

But yeah, if your team is trash, WC away, but the benefit of saving it is real imo, regardless of your disaster last season 😉

It may be that another strategy is better, but most people will want to buy DGW players for DGWs, and it's not more restrictive to WC those players in, but less restrictive. The fact I'd be looking to bring in DGW32 players using FTs has little to do with the WC because others with no WC will likely do the same (but perhaps to a lesser exent, which means they lose out on potential points!). The options are more open with more chips, and we also have the option to NOT buy a DGW player if we don't want him, just like early WCs, so we are not restricted in that sense either.

      Yeah great plan buddy.
      My thoughts are:
      1. BGD 27 easy to navigate as Everton have slightly tricky fixtures after 27 anyway so getting rid of them Early & currently have no City & 1 Spurs + 1 Chelsea so could get through without any real problems.

      2. Getting ready for BB for DGW 32 as I completely wasted it last year as rotation as season finished.

      3. FH according to Number of BGW player's in the team gw 31 or 33.

      4. WC GW 34 & suck all the money from bench into starting 11 & keep AWB, fodder, fodder on the bench.

      5. TC DGW 35

Noice to see we're thinking along the same lines. The order of the TC and BB probably depends on things we can't see right now, and there are pros and cons to bother orders. The season won't have finished in GW35 like it had in GW37 last year, hopefully 😀

          Yeah.
          That's true.
BB before WC can be great though as can wipe out bench & beef up starting 11.
Last year when I used BB 2 of the player's played 1 match each & sold Robbo+ Salah for getting other big hitters
          Season over 😀

Might end up being better to WC on a DGW. That was my initial thought until I realised I had chips to play. Problem being that this will likely already affect my transfers this week, and I'm thinking I might want to make those transfers in the next 30 mins haha

Yup, It has ended up a little frustrating actually with cheap playing BB assets available to you all this season. The only positive is I dont need to carry a second keeper and I guess my GW1 BB wasnt a disaster.

I’m planning on using FH in DGW32 and BB in DGW35 after WCing for GW34, will only be buying players in that look likely to blank in both GW31&GW33 so Leicester/Liverpool/Bournemouth players etc, hoping there will be a third DGW for teams that blank in GW27 where I’ll use my TC

+1 for this. Nice work... thanks! Had actually suggested an early BGW/DGW and chip planning discussion as a Scoutcast talking point this week, so your post was perfectly timed.

Would be interested in Joe & Co discussing this further and talking about how much the average chip was worth last year if used around doubles and blanks vs. "normal" weeks.

Last season the free hit was worth on average 25.5 points over not free hit teams when used in blank weeks.

Full analysis of last season here:

        https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/05/16/metrics-the-chip-strategies/

Basically the conclusion is its best to use the free hit in blanks, based on last season. Bear in mind this is only based on one season though. There are factors which make me suspect using it in a double may be more fruitful this year.

Ragabolly's analysis of last season (as linked above) is an excellent article.

The most popular choice, followed by many here, did not turn out to be the most successful.

Shirin Nizar, the winner of my January to May League last season, followed a strategy similar to Strategy A.

Yusuf Sheik, last season's FPL Champion, played his Wildcard early in GW25 and his Triple Captain late in GW38.

It is important to have a plan, but there is no single chip strategy that is guarranteed to be the most successful. And as well as using your chips sensibly, to be successful you also have to make the right transfers and the right occasional hits.

More than one way to skin a cat! I employed one of the more favoured strategies last year of WC32, BB34, FH35 and TC37, and it served me well.

I think you have to look at the fixtures and where they fall and work backwards from there, personally.

GW31 could be a trap. Apart from Liverpool, there could be a lot of rubbish teams playing - Fulham, Huddersfield, Burnley, Newcastle, Southampton, Cardiff.

A kind FA Cup draw for Utd / Arsenal, Wolves, Chelsea, City, and Spurs could make GW31 unappealing for even a free hit IMO. Might be a TC GW for Salah

          This is a great post.

I have listened to the planetfpl podcast and they suggested a different strategy

Build team up for blank 31

          32 free hit (dgw)

          33 blank

          WC34

          35 dgw bench boost

This ensures your team will max out on dgw players using free hit and wildcard team weeks before

But it means triple captain needs to be used on a single game week.

Salah v hudds gw36 looks a good candidate

Interested to know what people think of this option. ..thanks

I did "build up team for GW31" two seasons ago.

I rammed my team full of crap Everton players, ignoring decent players who were scoring heavily because of fixture blanks.

Probably cost me 100pts over 6-7 gameweeks in the run up

DON'T do it...use the Free Hit chip to negotiate the blank gameweek

I did the same, and it was viable that season because all the GBW players had great fixtures, and perfectly adequate form (perhaps Rondon for WBA was another one?), and so they were popular assets anyway. We just added a few additionals to our Build Up to the Blank Teams a few weeks prior to the blank.

This season it would likely require a lot more changes from me. My team is much more top-team heavy, and I think the cost of drudging out enough changes to make the BGW team builds would be too high and limiting. All of my transfers from around about now to GWGW33 would need to take the blanks into consideration (excluding GW32). That's up to 10 GWs of worrying whether you have enough dross in your team to cover fixtures you wouldn't normally necessarily even consider covering, nor buying these particular players in the first place.

I think the biggest issue with this approach is its likely to be a waste of the free hit. Its highly likely that in GW31 only Liverpool of the top 6 sides will have an attractive fixture (Fulham away). Most of us have at least 2 Liverpool assets already, so we only need to add 1 between now and GW31. Salah will be the obvious captain too. The other sides likely to have decent fixtures are Leicester, Bournemouth and possibly West ham if they don't blank. A simple swap of Digne to Pereira in GW27, holding one of Brooks, Fraser or Wilson and bringing in Filipe Anderson at some point should see you through to a green arrow, much like it did in last years bgw 31 when it was a similar situation (Liverpool home to Watford, no other top 6 side playing, Bournemouth with a strong fixture, etc etc).

For me the free hit is far better suited to DGW 32 in the double gameweek which falls between 2 blanks. Or in BGW33 to navigate the blank just after you've wildcarded in DGW32.

Fair point, but if you don't FH to get the dross INto your team, you have to have that dross actually in your team, then FH them OUT, and then get them back again (unless you WC on BGW33 which oesn't seem like a good idea. BGW33 seems a better use than DGW32 imo.

You don't have to see an immediate return from the FH for it to have been valuable. It can help your scores level out or you GRs blend in at a reasonable high, for instance, without having an explosive effect on your OR in a single GW. That's one way I visualise the FH in BGW31. 3 Liverpool is possible for BGW33 too, but still only BGW31 will cause you unmanageable problems (probably).

Is using a FH on "dross" as you put it a good use of the free hit then? I don't believe it is. I think its better used getting in high scoring potential players for 1 week only who are perhaps inaccessible for the non free hit sides who have to manage their squad more conservatively through this blanks and doubles period.

I think you're forgetting you can use your whole squad too. With a little planning, you could have a couple of 4.5m defenders for example who you often bench in normal gameweeks who can come into the side in a blank to help you to get closer to getting 11 men out. There isn't much real cost to your squad in carrying these players for a few weeks as they're so cheap.

I should have explained better in my post above that I currently see the most viable options to be:
          a) FH 32, WC 34, TC/BB 35
          b) WC 32, FH 33, TC/BB 35

This will depend on confirmed fixtures etc though of course.

Fair point about levelling out gameweeks. I don't think you've looked closely enough at the fixtures in BGW31 though. Let's look at it objectively, assuming its a normal gameweek with all 10 fixtures confirmed as on:

          Bournemouth 15:00 Newcastle
          Brighton 15:00 Cardiff
          Burnley 15:00 Leicester
          Everton 15:00 Chelsea
          Fulham 15:00 Liverpool
          Man Utd 15:00 Man City
          Spurs 15:00 Crystal Palace
          Watford 15:00 Southampton
          West Ham 15:00 Huddersfield
          Wolves 15:00 Arsenal

Where do you see predictable points coming from? Liverpool attack and defence for sure. A Spurs defender probably, a West Ham attacker and defender also. You could make a case for a bournemouth attacker, a brighton defender, and a Burnley and Leicester defender. Other than this, it looks tough to call. And this is assuming all the games are on, with blanks there are even less opportunities. I don't see many opportunities here to gain from a free hit over normal teams, as there aren't enough good fixtures for good teams and good players.

Let's say the 4 most likely blank fixtures are blanks, that leaves:

            Bournemouth 15:00 Newcastle
            Brighton 15:00 Cardiff
            Burnley 15:00 Leicester
            Fulham 15:00 Liverpool
            Watford 15:00 Southampton
            West Ham 15:00 Huddersfield

With free hit, I could get out a team like this:

            Ryan (Button)
            Robertson Pereira Chilwell (Holebas Duffy)
            Salah Anderson Nasri Pereyra (Deulofeu)
            Vardy Firmino Wilson

I could play around and give myself another Pool attacker, and other things. I could even make a B team with backup options, which ain't too bad:

            Fabianski (Heaton)
            Alenander-Arnold Dunk Balbuena (Ake Kiko)
            Mane Shaqiri Fraser Maddison Brooks
            Deeney Arnie (Rondon)

How many of these players are you likely to bring in and carry on your bench before GW31? Maybe Camarasa is the only current popular bench option who would be of use, and that requires removing a midfield starting slot from your team prior to GW31 (which I wouldn't be keen on). Getting the right 3 players on the bench might take 3 transfers, and might get in the way of other, more important transfers you want to make. And then there's the keeper, which for many may require another transfer. There are only 8-10 FTs from now till GW31 and only 4-5 from BGW27 to BGW31.

Even if you do get 3 on your bench plus a playing keeper to go with your Liverpool triple, that's only 7/11 players. If you want 11 players, you'll still need some of the above players in your team in the lead up to GW31 as well as in GW33 (although it depends on which teams blank). But I really think it will take hits for most people following this strategy to even get 7 players in GW31 unless we get better fixtures.

Players you'd want for DGW32 are more likely to match up with the players I actually want prior to the DGW anyway. This particularly works well for me as I don't own, nor plan to own, any Liverpool attackers at the moment, and I'd like to triple on City as soon as possible as I think their players are better value (and I have 2 mids already). I may also already have a DGW player in Alli, though I haven't even bought him yet and he might not blank in GW27.

At the end of the day, there's no one-size-fits-all strategy. As we found last year there are multiple ways to go about it. If you plan to have lots of money invested in Liverpool I think that makes your proposal more doable than if you don't. But a lot still rides on the information we don't yet have, so I'll admit that my plan could yet be the worst one available, even for my team. 😀

I will also concede that I do not know yet:

              - when we will find out who has DGW fixtures when
              - how many players with DGWs I'm likely to have in GW32 and how good their fixtures that week will be

If I can get as many DGWers as you can get SGWers, then I think our strats are relatively equal because we both have issues (my fixtures may not be the best; you have use transfers on players you wouldn't otherwise want), but on the whole it would be hard to separate them without looking at individual cases. But if I can't get as many actual fixtures as you, then it may be that your strat has the edge on mine. 🙂

I guess it really depends on how much you value the WILDCARD-TC/BB
      Imo
27: should be navigated through making sound transfers up until the gwk, and sensible Benching in the gwk.
31: cover blanks with FT's. In theory you could have 5 FT's to spend from 27-31.
      32: freehit the dgw
33: Get back squad untouched by the blank dgw.
      34: WC
35: BB if it gets packed, TC if it doesnt.

Personally think the advantage of getting to pick a side (FH) of dgwkers as close to deadline as possible, is a far better deal than doing the same in a blank gwk. So much so, that I think more than weighs up for the loss off the dgw benefit of the tc or bb.

Re 5: What makes you so certain that there will only be 2 top 6 teams at most in the FA Cup semis?

It is still possible for the semi-finalists to be City, Chelsea, Spurs and either Arsenal or United.

And remember that the League opponents of the Cup semi-finalists will also have a blank game-week.

Last season, 6 matches were postponed from BGW31 and 4 from BGW35. Spurs, Chelsea and United all had their GW35 matches postponed or brought forward.

If Kane gets confirmed out for a month, these are my preferred options atm for a hit or two (with C looking unlikely now thanks to Jesus):
    A. Kane + Camarasa to Rashford + Alli (formation change to 352 in the hope that Alli takes up the mantle in Kane's absence)
    B. Kane to Firmino (3.2itb to invest at a later date)
    C. Kane to Kun

    A. would leave with this team:
    Fabianski
    Robertson / Digne / Pereira
    Hazard / Sane / Pogba / Allli / Felipe
    Auba / Rashford
    (Hamer, Jimenez, AWB, Bednarek)
    0.7itb

Because of the Kane plan i have to rethink my plan totally but came up with a plan. That is to switch tactic to a 4-5-1 with cheap forwards witch i never tried before. Thats because i see more value in the midfielders now. Jimenez have good fixtures and when it turned its time for Wilson to take to lonely forward spot.

Current team is with 1,5 itb
    Fabianski, Guaita

    VVD, Shaw, Doherty, Digne, AWB

    Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Martial, Højbjerg*

    Wilson, Jimenez, Kane*

This gw Kane & Højbjerg to Kamara & Pogba witch leave me with 5,4 itb. Then i can bring in Mane, Sane, KTB or something tasty against Martial the GW after that and stil have 3.0-3.3 left to upgrade defense. Good or bad plan?

I did prefer big hitting strikers and usually play with 3 forwards at the same time. But now with Kane gone i don't really trust the other big ones like Auba and Augero because of Arsenals bad form and Peps rotation. So i think this solution is the best way to move forward. Also i get en extra point for every clean sheet if i bring in offensive midfielders from the top teams like City, Liverpool and United.

Impossible for OGS to sideline Rashford now without good reason, the man is on fire.

Lukaku and Sanchez will have to play themselves into the first team and that is no easy task the way United are playing at the moment.

Yes am seriously considering Jesus for Kane, potential for massive returns, not sensible given rotation risk but very tempting, if not maybe I'll go Firmino.

Sterling hasn't been in scintillating form lately, however I have 4.5M to spare and ideally want to replace Sigurdsson who has looked less threatening lately and is being overshadowed creatively by Digne (who has also taken a lot of set pieces off of him).

Sterling's up against a managerless and possibly demoralised Huddersfield (assuming Pep doesn't start Mahrez instead), followed by a Newcastle side that haven't been that strong defensively, followed by Arsenal's defence of clowns.

I could get Sane instead, but there's always the risk of Mendy significantly affecting his minutes and Mendy is expected back soon.

      TL;DR - Sigurdsson to Sterling for a -4?

Rotation. Sané looks ok if you can do a short term move but apart from that I doubt it’s worth it. If Sterling was firing then I’d get him, but he isn’t and Mahrez could come in at any point.

Makes sense - alternatively I could start Siggy this week and upgrade Rondon to Auba next GW, which would involve downgrading either Siggy or Jim for a hit.

I’d certainly look to get rid of Siggy. He’s not played well for some time now and has lost important fks to Digne it seems.

Agreed. The 4.5M in the bank means I can bring in any premium asset (aside from Liverpool players since I'm maxed out on them) with 1 transfer (if I get a premium mid) or 2 transfers next GW (if I get a premium striker). Tough to choose who to bring in though.

For me, bringing a city player in for a hit is too risky, plus Rondon needs to go too. I’d leave it a week and see what happens. Meantime Siggy could always get a pen. When in doubt, do nowt.

Not for a hit. I would expect Mendy to get eased back in due to his long lay off, I don't think I would let his imminent return put me off Sane just yet.

Kane needs to go though and I’m keen on getting more Liverpool and/or City players in the squad

Yes I’ve also toyed with that too. Doherty to TAA or take a hit and move Kane down to Firmino and Bennett up to Robertson

Wouldn't loose Doherty. Can try it with Luiz.
Kane transfer also looks different as no one seems to have Bobby.

He surely could. Although he looked very poor in the last game and his form is not the best. Considering ditching him my self, but it's a risk.

Terrible. Kun clearly isn’t nailed after Jesus played tonight and Spurs might struggle with Kane, Son and possibly Moura out.
