Has Salah finally shaken off his bonus points repellant?

Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) might have finally shaken off his aversion to bonus points this season as his Fantasy Premier League form continues to impress.

The Egyptian has recorded ten additional points through bonus in the last seven matches, which is 83% of his total for this year. If he continues at this rate, he could eclipse his tally for last season.

In the 2017/18 campaign, Salah broke the all-time FPL total score for a season but still only managed to add 26 bonus points.

A high number of off-target shots and offsides, as well as the fact that he was tackled fairly often, were all contributing factors to Salah dropping down the bonus points charts.

However, Liverpool’s number one attacker seems to have made improvements in all of those areas in recent weeks, to the extent that he has been averaging 1.43 bonus points per match since Gameweek 16.

In fact, Salah’s 11-point haul against Brighton in Gameweek 22 was the first match in which he has produced only one goal and earned bonus.

It was, of course, a match-winning goal, which does raise bonus points, but he has scored in two 1-0 wins before the one at the Amex Stadium and earned no bonus in either of them.

Prior to that, Salah has had to score another or provide an assist to put himself into consideration for the extra points on offer.

So that means something must have changed in his underlying statistics to endear him to the bonus points system (BPS) more than last season. Fantasy Football Scout members can read on and see more of our analysis…

Just had a venture into FPL twitter for the first time. Can't believe the sheer number of charlatans making money off FPL these days.

Agree, but there are one or two that have seriously seriously average records and are charging weekly fees for advice.

If you have a proven record then fine - knock yourself out. I'd rather pay for your advice for example...

While that's true, let's be honest, if someone who got a poor season time after time was giving advice on how to have a good season would you be taking their advice seriously? What if they wrote articles?

Perhaps if they justified their advice maybe, but not just on the face of it.

As long as you give justifiable reasons for what you're advising it's all good. But if you were claiming to have unlocked the secret of FPL we'd have to question it if you had a history that doesn't back it up.

That is not really the way i approach it.I like to hear all sides of the argument even if i do not agree with a petacular stance and make a decision on the back of all that.

No I totally agree. I'm probably not explaining what I mean too well.

Let's say someone with a shite history somehow accidentally ended up on one of those Meet The Manager videos. After seeing his rank at the start of the video it would immediately put doubt in your mind about what he has to say. What he goes son to say may be totally valid, but he'd have to work a lot harder to get your attention.

Though personally I don't check the ranks of people giving advice, I can see why some might.

That whole Meet The Manager thing is great and i love to see how different people approach the game.I would not mind at all if a manager with a questionable rank history was interviewed just as long as it was good TV.

Like a PL footballer that plays the game or some other celeb like you EF. 😉

I know where you are coming form alright and it is hard not to give what someone like that says more weight even if you are doing it subconsciously.

rank is negligible to a certain extent... as much as selection, transfers, strategy is paramount, there is an element of luck and sometimes you just don't get the run of the green!!

so with that said, quality of posts is key!

Anyone considered the fact it will be almost impossible to get a bench that all actually have 2 fixtures when you play Bench Boost? There may only be 3-4 extra games in the DGWs this season, so unless you rip up your entire squad just to optimise Bench Boost (taking out Liverpool assets for a start), you'll be doing all this planning for a fairly minor benefit of 1-2 bench players having 2 matches. If you've got a non-playing 2nd goalkeeper, that's another issue to sort out just for the BB chip.

Also, if Wildcard in GW34 for a BB in DGW35, you might have to go for a team you really don't want to actually get 15 players with a DGW. If there are only 4-6 teams with an extra game, that's slim pickings for a Wildcard team you will be stuck with. Chances are you will end up balancing things out with 10-11 DGW players and 4-5 SGW players including Liverpool assets, in which case once again the BB becomes no different to any other gameweek.

With all this in mind, would it not be better to simply play your Bench Boost in any GW where you have a real benching headache? For me, that's this GW, and I'm strongly considering it. I very, very nearly played it in GW19 and I regret not doing so - Digne was first sub (17 points) and AWB second sub (8 points). This GW I have to bench two of Doherty, Alonso, Deulofeu, Jimenez. And one of Patricio or Fabianski.

In conclusion, I'll be surprised if many managers end up playing their BB with 15 DGWers no matter when they use it.

Yup nobody ever gets 30 fixtures from their BB

But we all seem to talk about it like that's what is going to happen, so we have to save it up. Pretty much the only reason I didn't play it in GW19 is because it felt too early, like I didn't know enough about what was going to happen later on. But really, deep down, I kinda knew I should play it because my bench happened to be ridiculously strong that GW. And now I've got the same feeling all over again.

Do most managers genuinely believe they will get 30 fixtures out of it?

its the potential of getting 30 or close to it thats appealing, plus if you are controlling an ML you feel you have this as a security

But how do you actually to plan to get 30 or close to it? You can't Wildcard in BGW31 for a BB in DGW32, so you either have to mess with your team constantly leading up to DGW32 (and even then, you probably won't manage it), or you can wildcard in GW34, BB in GW35, at which point you will have a BB squad that may not be anywhere close to the optimal team for GW36-38.

I wish i had played it earlier... I had Digne that week with AWB, Button and Jiminez. Ended up benching 42 points i believe :(. Will defo use it when I need to. Would consider it this week but Alonso against Arsenal and Jimi could easily blank imo. Also, not keen on AWB

Yeah, it was really silly in hindsight. We held on for no reason. Similar to mine, I had 30 points, and I went into the GW worried about it!

AWB is ruining it this GW, you're right. I look at the rest of my bench and I want to play it so badly, but it feels like a bit of a waste when he's not getting a CS.

Yep. No way I'm getting rid of Salah and Robertson just to optimise by BB. So that's already 2 out of 4 in my team that won't have a DGW regardless. Then possible budget goalkeeper issue. Maybe having some Leicester coverage for that fixture run and needing them to help you in BGW33 etc.

I just can't see any permutations where getting a full bench of DGWers is going to happen, or going to be optimal if you force it.

It isn't about getting 15dgw players. In a typical week your bench is meh-goodish. In a DGW your meh players have 2 games. Yes your Liverpool players have only 1 game...but in what other week would you have three Liverpool players on the bench?

GW25 looks good to me. Cardiff home to Bournemouth, Brighton Watford, Palace Fulham, Burnley Southampton.

Bench of Button, AWB, Bednarek, Camarasa/Niasse could get a couple of clean sheets and maybe a goal.

Looks good. My only issues would be how similar it looks to a lot of non-Wildcard teams already out and already doing well. How many changes have you actually bad? How bad was your old team?

Basically, it doesn't appear to be much of a differential / climb the rankings team, if that's what you're hoping. I have 10 of the same players plus Doherty instead of Bennett, so it just seems a little template'ish unless you're protecting your OR.

Yep fair enough. If you're consolidating, that's a fine team. Personally I would have Alli in a Wildcard team now, and I wouldn't pick Richarlison or Anderson as I'm looking for ways to get rid of both soon.

But overall it's a strong team for the next few weeks.

Bench doing my head in. Rich is away and may play out wide against a sometimes solid Southampton defence. But Jimi appeals to me as Leicester look to have tightened up slightly and its early kick off so I'll either be happy I benched or anxious for Rich points which is exciting. This game does my nut in, I know whichever i choose will be the wrong one

SOU has conceded the most chances down the middle and on their right flank. Should bode well for Digne and Richarilson.

LEI has tightened up and at his current rate, Jimenez looks to be the Mitro. Jim has twelve goal attempts and only three on target over the last four.

Current team- Would u leave it as is until next GW or make a move?
    Fancying Firnino.
Thinking Kamara-> Firmino (another -4) may be worth it especially over the course of the next few Gw's. If I bring in Firmino this week I would bench Bednarek.

    Fabianski.
    Doherty, Digne, Bednarek, Holebas.
    Salah, Pogba, Sane, Rich.
    Rashford, Auba.
    Hamer, Camarasa, AWB, Kamara.
    -4, 5.5m ITB

    1. Kamara -> Firmino.
    2. Camarasa-> Alli.

      - too much money on defense. I would downgrade one of VVD, Digne or Doherty. Otherwise you will have to bench one of them every week.
      - too risky to have both KDB and Sane with Long/Kamara on the bench. Downgrade KDB and use to money to improve forward

On a WC. Not many strikers are appealing to me so I’ve gone heavier on Def and Mid.

    Any views pls?

And yet that midfield to me is not really heavy at all. I would look to upgrade Kante probably by downgrading VVD. I don't like your front 3 either sorry and would look to somehow upgrade one of Long or Deeney at least.

Due to taking an early -8 then being confronted with Kane & TAA news, i have already taken a -16 and have the following 3-4-3 with 3.4ITB :

    Foster
van Dijk / Digne / Shaw
Salah / Hazard / Felipe Anderson / Richarlison
    Rashford / Firmino / Jimenez

    Patricio / Camarasa / AWB / Bennett (+3.4ITB)

Would you consider an early 2nd wildcard this season to the below 3-5-2 to get your -16 back or take the hits on the chin and crack on? Thanks :

    Patricio
    Robertson / Digne / Shaw
    Salah / Hazard / Sane / Alli / Pogba
    Rashford / Jimenez

Yeah 0ITB hence Sinclair but really want Robbo over VVD if wildcarding and 3rd striker is only gonna be bench fodder to allow the power 5 midfield, think i'd rather keep Robbo? Ty for replies...such a toughie, really unsure whether losing te WC now is worth it?
