How FA Cup quarter-finals affected Blank Gameweek 33

Fantasy Premier League managers now have a much clearer picture of what Blank Gameweek 33 looks like after today’s FA Cup matches.

There is now a total of six matches confirmed for that weekend, and three postponed.

All we are waiting on now is Tottenham’s match against Brighton, which is dependent on the Seagulls’ FA Cup clash with Millwall on Sunday afternoon.

Confirmed Blank Gameweek 33 fixtures:

  • Southampton v Liverpool [Fri | 20:00]
  • Bournemouth v Burnley [Sat | 15:00]
  • Huddersfield Town v Leicester City [Sat | 15:00]
  • Newcastle United v Crystal Palace [Sat | 15:00]
  • Everton v Arsenal [Sun | 14:05]
  • Chelsea v West Ham United [Mon | 20:00]

Postponed Blank Gameweek 33 fixtures:

  • Manchester City v Cardiff City
  • Watford v Fulham
  • Wolves v Manchester United

They left it late but Manchester City secured passage to the semi-finals by coming from behind to beat Swansea City 3-2 at the Liberty Stadium.

That means they will now no longer play Cardiff City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, April 6 and therefore have a Blank in Gameweek 33.

Most exciting for Fantasy managers is the result of that postponement for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Their meeting with the Bluebirds will have to be rearranged, and with Double Gameweek 35 already containing two fixtures, Gameweek 32 looks the most likely to absorb it.

That should mean Manchester City play Fulham (away) and Cardiff (home) in what would be a hugely appealing Double Gameweek.

Nothing has yet been confirmed by the Premier League on the subject but an announcement is likely to be made in the coming days.

If it is confirmed soon, those playing the Free Hit chip are likely to turn to Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) to capitalise.

However, we could face a similar situation as we did in Double Gameweek 25 as Fantasy managers have to carefully calculate which Manchester City players are most likely to play both Premier League matches.

The fact that Guardiola has his charges competing on so many fronts will exacerbate this dilemma.

Watford’s win over Crystal Palace has postponed their Premier League meeting with Fulham on Saturday, April 6.

That means the Hornets will have two Double Gameweeks this season, the aforementioned clash with the Cottagers and Southampton’s trip to Vicarage Road, originally planned for Blank Gameweek 31, both outstanding at this stage.

One of those is expected to fall in Double Gameweek 32 and the other in 35, although we will have to wait and see which way round they are. Thankfully, either combination makes for an exciting schedule for Watford options.

The Hornets’ Double Gameweek schedule could either look like this:

Double Gameweek 32
Manchester United v Watford
Watford v Southampton

Double Gameweek 35
Huddersfield v Watford
Watford v Fulham

Or like this:

Double Gameweek 32
Manchester United v Watford
Watford v Fulham

Double Gameweek 35
Huddersfield v Watford
Watford v Southampton

As we say, either scenario looks very promising, with the Double Gameweek 35 possibilities probably the more appealing.

With four goals and two assists in his last four Premier League outings, Gerard Deulofeu (£5.6m) will be a popular player to turn to in midfield.

Meanwhile, Troy Deeney (£5.9m) has three goals and three assists in that time as well.

Crystal Palace’s exit at the hands of Watford confirms their presence in Blank Gameweek 33.

The Eagles’ trip to face Newcastle was confirmed as going ahead now that they will not be involved in the FA Cup at the semi-final stages.

That is good news for those holding onto Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m), for example, who will now count towards our total of Blank Gameweek 33 players.

The same goes for Newcastle options as their presence in Blank Gameweek 33 was also confirmed by Saturday’s FA Cup action.

Therefore, those who invested in Salomón Rondón (£5.9m), Isaac Hayden (£4.4m), Miguel Almirón (£6.0m) and the like, are now further prepared for the next round of depleted fixtures.

Managers who held onto Fabian Schär (£4.7m), despite his suspension from Blank Gameweek 31, will also be pleased with the outcome of Watford’s FA Cup quarter-final. He will be back from his ban in time to play in Blank Gameweek 33 now.

As they were scheduled to play each in Blank Gameweek 33 anyway, the result of Wolves and Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final had no impact on the Premier League schedule.

However, it might bode well for the Red Devils’ options in FPL for them not to be involved in the final stages of the competition.

As already mentioned, we will have the Blank Gameweek 33 line-up confirmed by the result of Brighton’s trip to Millwall on Sunday afternoon.

A win for the Seagulls would ensure that they and Tottenham do not play a Premier League fixture on Sunday, April 7.

However, if the Lions knock Chris Hughton’s men out then Brighton and Spurs options will play a part in getting a team out for Blank Gameweek 33.

Regarding when to pushthe FH button...
If we have already done 4-5 transfers to make use of price changes... does it matter when will we push the FH button?
I mean even if there are changes in program will someone prefer to stay with -16? 😀

So you can get him at 3.8 instead of 3.9? If Freehitting you can have 2 non-playing 3.8 million defenders on the bench and spend the money in your starting 11.

Ive had a change of heart and based on how the fixtures fall I plan to TC in 32 on a city player or Hazard most likely. Is 7 DGW players for a - 8 sound plan.

      • 6 Years
      5 years, 7 months ago

Im considering the same but having 4 extra dgw players plus no -8 on a free hit will mean that your TC will have to score at least 16 points (48). Taking into account that your 4 extra players only get 4 appearance points each (no returns)

I'm not sure I follow. Why not field a full team of DGWers and not take any hits? Sterling is going to have to score healthily to outscore -8 and what 5 extra games.

No, you haven't. When are you going to bench boost then? This strategy doesn't seem to make best use of either FH or bench boost.

I don't care what Jonty says on the MTM vids.

FPL is a game of luck.

Take Bournemouth's game today. There were 4 players who could have scored well: Wilson, King, Brooks, Fraser.

Who out of the 4 who gets the points is an absolute lottery.

Sometimes you pick the right one; sometimes you don't. You win some; you lose some.

You can pour over the stats and you can watch all the games in order to conduct the eye test, but at the end of the day the simple fact remains ...

The same thing happened with Sterling and Aguero against Watford at home. 99% of Sterling owners went into that game saying they were worried Aguero would haul. The other 1% were liars.

The game is about probability. While week to week it may seem like just random chance (in any one week a player with a lower probability of doing well may perform a player with a high probability of doing well), if you pick players that are most likely to score well then over a large sample size you will outperform your peers.

Exactly this. Anyone who does not understand this will struggle to do well at this game over the long term.

When it comes down to 2-shot samples like GW31 GW33, or a 1-game sample, the probabilities have huge variance. (ie luck)

The course of the season is a different matter. Talking about long-run statistical regression is shopworn and obvious.

I'd rather define a great player as one who can play out of outlier risky situations consistently. This is not based off pure statistical regression.

How come some players are consistently (bar the odd year) over a decade lucky like Mark Sutherns/Ville Ronka?

Two completely different playing styles as well.

Obviously it's part skill, part luck. Nobody with a brain is going to argue with that; the only argument is what % of each applies.

The skill is in identifying the teams / players that are most likely to score big; the luck is in picking the right ones. If it was 100% luck, the correct strategy would be to fill your squad with the least popular players and hope your numbers come up. For it to be 100% skill they'd have to completely ignore the actual football and just award points based on expectation. Neither of which would be anywhere near as much fun!

I hate all luck based games. Same with poker its such a joke how some guys like Phil Ivey got lucky for years and years while other players were unlucky. In the end only the luckiest player comes out ahead.

Theres always 'luck' involved but the games really about using past results, statistics and your observational skills to predict and plan the upcoming gameweeks in such a way that minimises risk and maximises your teams potential for points

As like for rotation in 32 as 35

Both have the extra games 1 week ahead if 1st legs and 14 days before 2nd legs.

Europe QFs is midweek after 33+34 the SFs is midweek after 36+37.

If players play little internationals then maybe rotation fractionally more likely in 35.but 32 is 3-4 days before Man City,Watford, Wolves and maybe Brighton’s semis at Wembley

  25. FPL Forward Thinker

Chelsea v Brighton, will almost definitely be 32. But if 35 would have to be Thursday 25 April (Chelsea play PL matches on Mon 22nd and Sun 28th)
    33 & 34 is Europa QF
    36 & 37 is Europa SF

Means Spurs v Brighton GW35 likely or if Millwall reach semi, it will be Cardiff v Brighton in 35.
Means Spurs v Palace in 32

I think the 9 or 10 rearranged matches will be:

    32 will be following 5 - Wol-MUtd, Che-Bri, M City-Car, Spurs-Pal and Watford v Soton or Fulh
    35 will be following 4 - MUtd-M City, Wol-Ars, Spurs-Bri and Watford v Fulh or Soton
    36 or 37 with 1 - Car-Bri
