How to cover Liverpool defence after price hikes

Hefty price hikes for Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) will force Fantasy Premier League managers into some tough decisions ahead of 2019/20.

The fact that they will cost the same for the new campaign makes choosing between the two full-backs harder than we expected – and the fact they are £7.0m means that owning both is even less of a realistic prospect.

Had Alexander-Arnold come in at £6.5m, it might have skewed the ownership figures in his favour at the expense of Robertson, so we have further proof that the game-makers at FPL enjoy seeing us squirm.

With Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) the initial undercut asset and Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren priced at £5.5m, it means that there is actually still a range of choices for Fantasy managers to choose from when picking their Liverpool defender(s).

In this Members article, we assess both the defensive and offensive statistics for the key Liverpool stoppers ahead of the new season.

As this analysis uses Opta data, only those who have signed up to Fantasy Football Scout Membership for 2019/20 read on.

Is Liverpool’s defence worth the investment?

Can't go without kdb despite having sterling
In fact, can't lose any of kdb, salah, sterling and siggy!

What is the preferred formation this season?

    I'm looking at a heavy back 4.

    442 or 433?

    Thanks

I've got Edward Nketiah up front, so 442 or 352. I have a core 342 to add one from three of Diop, Rico and Jorginho.
It can all change though. Last season started well by committing to never playing three up front. If someone cheap emerges, they can be bought.

        Still on mine too

Rather hoping Auba gets sold to bring in Zaha at Arsenal which would get Laca for Auba up top and more cash for KdB in midfield

Starting at the back what are people thinking about keepers?

DDG at 5.5 is tempting me with a 4.0 non playing second keeper, none of the 4.5 seem to be calling out to me. Any other ideas or rotations?

I always go big, pick n forget with a 4m benchie. Needs to be one of Ederson or Alisson for me, or at a pinch Lloris or even Pickford, at least for early GWs.
Absolutely not DDG until we see United show much better form. 4.5s can be viable to spend money outfield so long as you get a good one. We'd need to know who claims the gloves at Burnley and Bournemouth at that level.

Ederson probably the better bet then as most will use there Liverpool slots on Salah plus 2 defenders

Exactly. Liverpool have a settled starting XI whereas it's a nightmare to know who starts for City any given GW, so Ederson becomes the safe option.

      Ederson/Alisson or a 4.5 set and forget.

He’s worth watching, though. His totals included a lot of 20 min cameos which you would think won't be the same any more. I’m considering but not from GW1 - he can always come in with the first WC if he looks nailed and profitable.

I think Pascal Gross could be a hidden gem for a more attacking Brighton under Graham Potter, but midfield choice is so crowded with good options (Siggy, Brooks, Fraser, Redmond, Maddison, Zaha)

Personally looking at Trossard when he comes into the game. I think its the wingers which will be living their best life under Potter. Didnt see his Swansea, but his Ostersunds were incredible from yhe wings with Sema and Ghoddos. If Jahanbaksh/Izquerido/Knockeart/Trossard nail a place, think they could be golden.

O'Connell is one to watch. Almost plays like a fullback in Sheffield United's overlapping center backs system and is an aerial threat on set-pieces (3 goals and 4 assists last season iirc)

Out of the 7m midfielders Willian and/or Sanchez could be absokute steals couldn't they if they nail down a place?

Zaha classed as a mid again or Mili who is probably going to get about 20 penalty opportunities next season is a tough one.

Not really. Lucas is good for the first 3 GW but might (prob will) lose his place when Son returns. Alli should be nailed long-term.

Alli was a shadow of himself last season though much better options such as Zaha at 7 for example.

True, but he may light up with the new midfielder behind him that Spurs are buying now, and if Eriksen leaves. I'm not starting with Alli as I'm going with Kane and Moura, but Alli may well be an option after a few GWs.

Think pricing is pretty good - Vardy is a bargain, spurs defence looks cheap. United defence could turn out to be cheap. Time will tell but Zinchenko could become bargain of the season, wildcard around GW4 when all the cheapies have revealed themselves

    Ryan 4.0
    Robertson VVD Mendy Coleman 4.0
    Salah Sterling KDB 4.5 4.5
    Vardy DCL 4.5

Preseason will determine whether I start with Zinchenko or Mendy, the former frees up 0.5 to spend on a better 11th starting player. DCL could go but otherwise I feel pretty set. Only Kane that worries me

Yeah, DCL or tosun. Good fixtures and cheap. If Zinchenko looks like a starter I might upgrade to King but to be honest I’m all in on a squad of about 8 players and the rest are there to make up the numbers. Will wildcard after 4 or 5 weeks when we know who this seasons bargains are 🙂

And Salah underperformed a bit last season yet he still smashed FPL - I think he’s well worth it. It leaves you with some absolute scraps on the bench but who cares? In my opinion, the first 4 names on the team sheet should be the cheapest possible players by position in GK, DF, MF and FW. Then you blow your beans on the best you can get to start

        1. Christina.

Both Zinchenko and Mendy are rotation risk better go with Walker who is nailed and offers the same thing. Bilva/Siggy a better option than Kdb and need Upgrade one of the 4.5 Midfielders.

      1. 7shadesofsmoke

Too early to worry about that. Mendy is the placeholder, he’d be my fave if nailed. If Zinchenko is nailed, he’s my next fave. Still have flexibility if they’re not certain but at the end of the day, we’ve got a major trannie window open and no player is ‘nailed’ until that shuts.

Personally I’d rather be late than be early with KDB given his struggles last season

It’s an easy downgrade if he bucks the trend and goes mental, it’s not so easy going the either direction if Pep decides to wrap him in cotton wool and/or his knees are still not right and/or he doesn’t hit form

I’d still be a bit hesitant to jump in even on the back of a good pre-season

The intensity of a PL game is a notch up vs. Friendlier/charity shield, and KDB is an intense player who can’t help himself at times - I want to see him survive and thrive in a couple of league games before taking the plunge

But he definitely looks very cheap at 9.5

Gutted by the Wilson price. At 7.0/7.5 I’d have worked to get him in but he’s just a bit too much for me to consider at this stage. Do we think he’s priced to protect if he gets a move to a bigger side? Same for Fraser

Haven't seen Giroud in many teams so far, would have thought at 7.0 he'd be a decent pick if starts were guaranteed. Is there only Tammy Abraham challenging for his place?

You have bats coming back as well. Frank might use him this time around

    First of many drafts:
    Ryan Button
Robbo TAA Digne C Taylor N Taylor
    Salah KDB Bilva Siggy 4.5
    Vardy King 4.5

The Taylor twins to rotate in a 442.

    Thoughts?

Yeah will have to keep an eye out for that. Good rotation between Villa and Burnley though.

Mings could be good if he signs for Villa. Don''t know why he isn''t listed as a Bournmouth player. Or why Steer isn't listed for Villa

I keep getting a voice in my head 'Alexis Sanchez...classed as a midfielder, only $7m....'
Only one day in and I know it's wrong but it's already getting to me.

Mate he's a rotation risk who is not the player he once was. I'd love to see him do well but for 7 mil just go zaha.

Surprised I have not seen the ..."Salah has to be captained week in week out @ that price'' posts...

I went pretty close yesterday with my outrageous prediction, but expanded and caveated it a bit vs. a standard “just perma-cap Salah”:

      Outrageous prediction:

If they all stay fit, TAA, Robbo & Salah’s total scores (including Salah’s captaincy games) won’t be too far shy of 1000 points this season

      26.5m looks cheap

Its obvious though. You need to cap these expensive players to get full value. Its why teams with Sterling + Salah + Kane are bad.

So got 1m spare. Do I upgrade Diogo Jota to Jiminez or Fabianski to Ederson???

Ederson. Wolves need to invest to not feel the Europa League effect. Really good team but may see some tired legs.

I've gone Heaton/Pope because with no Europe I think Burnley will do okay this year.

Looks like Heaton may move. He might go to a team that rotates well with Burnley.

Suprised I haven’t seen more attention on the Aguero price...

Putting him at the same price as Sterling and 0.5 below Salah is harsh imo, but at least does continue their trend of being harsh on strikers....

He looks a difficult enough pick to me at that price... no doubt he’ll be destructive at times but he actually got 54 of his 200 points in just 3 games last season

It’s all about finding those 3 or 4 games with Kun

      Yep

He and Sterling are close to impossible to fit into the same team.

One way I quite like the pricing structure is that it’s forcing the choice between Mo and Mane and Kun and Sterling until budgets grow.

There’s a huge amount of choice around the 6-7 mill mark - and that’s where early gains will be decided imo. Just off the top of my head - all these seem decent picks:

      Robbo
      TAA
      Vvd
      Laporte
      Mendy
      Digne
      Luiz
      Azpi
      Redmond
      Jwp
      Zaha
      Mili
      Fraser (sort of)
      Jim
      Jota
      Arnie
      Giroud

Can anyone suggest any useful cheapies for benching...useful being the operative word here...no idea what i'm doing playerwise but i understand economics

    1. Tomerick
      • 10 Years
      5 years, 4 months ago

Personally I don’t like to have any none playing bench players so you want to look at the best 4.5 defenders until maybe a 4.0 emerges in pre season.

There’s some good 5.0 mid options but not many good budget striker options. He best striker options are mainly mid priced.

whats your budget for your bench?

Call me a one eyed Kiwi but Chris Wood at 6.5 mill this surely must be a misprint...at double the price he'd still be a bargain...can sniff out a goal a mile away that boi..

BTW what happened tp Pulisic, not even listed... had him in my Bundeliga fantasy squad and he was good value points wise..

    Which on would you prefer

    A)
    Ederson
    Robertson-trippier-coleman
    Siggy-fraser-salah-zaha-moura
    Wilson-vardy

    B)
    Ryan
    Taylor-coleman-rico
    Siggy-fraser-salah-zaha-sterling
    King-kane

So basically heavy hitters sterling & kane IN for vardy and moura (and making defence very Light)
