Salah’s FPL appeal boosted by early AFCON exit for Egypt

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) made a much earlier-than-anticipated exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening after Egypt were defeated 1-0 by South Africa.

The shock result means that Salah and his country have bowed out of the tournament over two weeks before it is due to finish.

Bafana Bafana’s victory could have repercussions in Fantasy Premier League, with Salah’s summer international obligations coming to an end before those of teammates Sadio Mane (£11.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

With the Africa Cup of Nations final taking place exactly three weeks before Gameweek 1 kicks off, we had previously expressed concern that Salah and/or Mane could be doubts for the 2019/20 curtain-raiser between Liverpool and Norwich City in August.

Last year, Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) were handed three weeks off after their exertions with Croatia and England at the World Cup.

Klopp is, indeed, expected to give Firmino and Alisson (£6.0m) the same amount of time to recover after their run to the final in the Copa America.

Salah’s premature departure from the Africa Cup of Nations, however, has effectively killed any concern that he won’t be ready for Gameweek 1 – barring any further injuries, of course.

Egypt 0-1 South Africa

Saturday’s result was an unanticipated outcome: Egypt were not only the host nation of the competition but also the pre-tournament favourites with the bookmakers and made it to the final in 2017.

Egypt went into the weekend with a 100% record in this year’s tournament, while South Africa had lost two of their three group matches and only qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams.

Salah had been a doubt for this last-16 tie with a cold but recovered to line up, as he so often does, on the right flank.

The Liverpool winger looked below-par and didn’t have much influence on proceedings, however, with South Africa full-back Sifiso Hlanti proving more than a match for the premium FPL midfielder.

Salah started brightly and fizzed an early effort wide via a deflection but struggled to make an impression beyond that, save for one superb pass through to Mahmoud Trezeguet that the Egypt attacker should have converted.

Trezeguet had missed another chance that Salah had teed up earlier in the game, while the Liverpool man himself had two other blocked shots and drilled wide from a long-range free-kick.

Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and Mohamed Elneny (£4.5m) both started the game for Egypt, with the Aston Villa right-back completing the game and Elneny substituted with seven minutes to go.

Both of those two players will also now return to their respective Premier League clubs.

For what it’s worth, Percy Tau had an excellent match – the Brighton and Hove Albion attacker has not been able to get a work permit since his move to the Amex but a strong showing from South Africa this summer could change all that.

Uganda 0-1 Senegal

While Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end, Mane and Senegal have progressed to the tournament quarter-finals after edging past Uganda on Friday.

It will be interesting to see just how far Mane goes with the Lions of Teranga, given the concerns we outlined above about Liverpool assets being handed three-week breaks following their international efforts this summer.

Senegal next face Benin on Wednesday, with their opponents being one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition.

Mane’s nation, meanwhile, are now as short as 8/5 with some bookmakers to win the tournament following Egypt’s exit.

The former Southampton winger was again in the thick of the action, scoring his side’s winner after 15 minutes before missing from the spot for the second time in this tournament.

Mane broke the deadlock when racing through to finish M’Baye Niang’s pass but, having missed from 12 yards against Kenya last week, then saw a second-half spot-kick saved after he himself was felled by opposition goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Mane and Senegal can occasionally look dangerous going forward but this was a match low on goalscoring opportunities, with Senegal having just five shots in total.

The premium FPL midfielder was again deployed on the left wing and lasted the whole 90 minutes.

Budget midfield pair Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gana Gueye (both £5.0m) also played the full game.

Morocco 1-1 Benin (1-4 Penalties)
Nigeria 3-2 Cameroon

Wolves’ Romain Saiss (£4.5m) played the full 120 minutes as Morocco bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shootout defeat on Friday.

Saiss impressed in defence as Morocco bossed the possession and chances but his country were unable to break down a stubborn Benin side who triumphed on penalties after playing the last 25 minutes of extra-time with only ten men.

Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) was on the scoresheet in the other round-of-16 tie to take place on Sunday as Nigeria edged past defending champions Cameroon in a five-goal thriller.

The lively Arsenal winger scored the game’s winner on 66 minutes, charging through to finish low past Andre Onana after being slipped through by Odion Ighalo.

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) played the whole 90 minutes in midfield while Brighton’s Leon Balogun (£4.5m) replaced Iwobi in stoppage time.

We’ll bring you up to speed on the other Africa Cup of Nations games and the finals of the Copa America and Gold Cup in the coming days, as well as revealing the latest on Alexis Sanchez‘s (£7.0m) injury after the Manchester United winger was substituted in his country’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Saturday.

If pogba leaves rashford could be great value if on pens. Could up him to a 20 goal a season striker

But, would he even get that many chances without the main playmaker of the team setting those up for him?

Interestingly, despite playing most games as a wide forward, only taking one penalty, and his club generally being a shambolic mess during his tenure there - he has actually scored more goals in less games, in both premier league and champions league, than Cristian’s Ronaldo had at that age...

(Rashford that is, not Ashley Barnes 😉 )

If he follows anything like the same improvement curve he’ll be up at 20 a season soon enough 🙂

He really isn't anything special, if United want to compete then Rashford can't be their first-choice ST, United are paying him bonkers money, the same as Salah aha

I suppose it just depends on a person’s individual & subjective definiton of special.... he’s certainly not amongst the best forwards in the world - I don’t think we’re going to have too many people arguing that (luckily 😉 ).... but...

Statistically he’s amongst he best 21 year old forwards in world football, and has a goals/games record that compares extremely favourably to both Ronaldo & Messi at he same age - not a bad place to be, for a 21 year old 😉

Just going through the article on hall of fame people. They all used 3-at-the-back formations ALL THE TIME last season. Yet I keep seeing arguements for 4 or 5 men defences. Is this just because we find it difficult to pick value midfielders and forwards when no friendlies have been played?

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

It’s possibly good to remember the old “Past performance doesn’t guarantee future results” caveat

Check out the poll at the side of the page - very, very few people in the grand scheme of things are planning on a back 5 this season (less than 10% of the poll)

So with 90% of the teams polled not playing a back 5, it probably tops the balance in favour of a (relatively) higher % of non-back 5 ypteams doing well again this season almost by default

For me, when we have defenders like TAA, Robbo, VVD, Laporte, Digne, Coleman, Trippier, Rose, Luiz, Alonso, etc. etc. an dmidpeice midfielders/forwards that are so underwhelming... it looks like a back 5 may be the horse for this particular season’s course

      Time will tell 🙂

Ah, didn't know about the pole (only view this site on the phone).

Maybe just feels like a lot of people are considering it because nobody ever says "i'm thinking of going with 3 at the back..."

I have played 4 and 5 at the back last 2 seasons and come to the conclusion that 3 at the back is still best. This is because it allows the greatest flexibility. I think those top guys love it when we get to clever

I think everyone is getting far too carried away with 'value' rather than just picking those who get most points - these 5 man defences won't last long.

    4. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
      • 8 Years

It's because most analysis for of "value" only looks at season long points. Then, the conclusion = more £ in defence = better, which isn't necessarily true.

4 or especially 5 mid to hig hitters look quite nice on paper when your building the team from the back. It’s ultimately when your filling the rest that the problems really arise. Captain picks for me are still the big factor I look for, and to have them the compromise comes at the back. If you were picking a XI for the season, you could find the defenders offer a lot of value but the game for me can only be played in series of 4-6 gws

Loads of expensive defenders will work for a zombie team that you don't touch.

For active FPL managers making transfers every week, its just a matter of time before you downgrade them to a £4.5m defender who has got a couple of clean sheets recently to free up cash.

It's like that season Alonso was £7m ... multiplied by 4 or 5.

Daft assumption. If you start with a strong back line there's no reason to transfer them for the sake of it. I'd be quite happy to rake in the points and not make a single transfer. As it is, I think it's more likely I'll be making constant tweaks of my mids and forwards to catch the fixtures.

It’s hard to be resilient in sticking to that strategy. Maybe a few seasons from now, most will follow through with it. But now it seems like a huge advantage to those who resist the tinkering, as we’re all aware of the stats pointing to strong overall points finishes keeping these premium defenders throughout the season. It’s just that no one does it

I was currently thinking Fab/Patricio for 10.0 but I'm sure that isn't a popular option, but Fab to be tested more than ever = save points, and if Wolves continue to improve...plus they rotate well (unless I'm reading the table incorrectly) and I don't block a spot for ManC or Liverpool. But it is .5 more than I'd prefer to spend (my current option 2 is Pickford/Button at 9.5).

I am thinking of a 4-4-2 formation with a power defence of VVD - Robbo - Laporte - Digne like many people on here.

Does that warrant a slightly weak midfield of Salah - Richarlison - Yarmolenko - Perez?

Van Dijk / Walker / Coleman / Adam Smith / Kelly
    Salah / Sigurdson / B Silva / Maddison / Dendoncker
    Kane / Giroud / Ings

Begovis in for Week1 only (to be replaced by Fabianski from GW2)
Front 3 very much under review - waiting to see if Giroud will be nailed, and Ings is starting (and Injury free)
Could do Firmino / Vardy / Ings replacement (6.0)

Can anyone make anything close to something resembling a decent team that has Salah, Sterling, Aguero and double Liv defence? This is what I've got atm while trying it...

    Ryan
    TAA VVD Coleman El Mohamady
    Salah Sterling Perez McGinn
    Aguero King

    Button Kelly Dedoncker Greenwood

Not good, is it? I don't think you can - you can with two of them. I've got a great squad with Salah, Sterling, Robbo and TAA.

Well I'm on a team with Salah, Sterling, Kane and double Liv defence right now:

I've heard a view that it's Moshiri who wants a 'big name' signing but Silva and Brands aren't keen. Make what you will of that.

I'm not sure it'd be worth the risk of him upsetting the dressing room with his inevitable attitude and huge wage but they definitely need a striker and he's great at playing the lone role.

I've got a 3rd Midf spot waiting for whichever of Zaha or Fraser go to Arsenal, and I'd shake up my draft if Diego Costa ends up at Everton. Plus waiting on Tielemans to sign for Leicester.

      Arnautovic replacement
      Costa at Everton

Tilemans - tough call between him and Maddison, but would increase confidence in Vardy over Kane or Auba
