Mane a doubt for Gameweek 1 as Senegal make AFCON final

The Gameweek 1 availability of Sadio Mane (£11.5m) must surely be in question after Senegal made it through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2002.

Senegal face Algeria in Friday’s final, which is staged exactly three weeks before Liverpool’s season-opening fixture against Norwich City.

Jurgen Klopp appears to be giving all of his players a three-week break following their international exertions this summer – as happened with several players after the 2018 World Cup – and Mane’s delayed departure from Egypt casts into doubt his chances of featuring against the newly promoted Canaries, at least from the start.

It’s not just Mane who is representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, of course, and we’ll be bringing you up to date on the other FPL assets involved at the quarter-final and semi-final stages in the Scout Notes article below.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Egypt bowed out of the competition at the round-of-16 stage.

Senegal 1-0 Benin
Senegal 1-0 Tunisia (after extra-time)

Mane was heavily involved in Senegal’s quarter-final win over Benin, teeing up Everton’s Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) for the match-winning goal and seeing two strikes of his own chalked off after VAR intervention.

Mane lasted the whole 90 minutes, along with Cheikhou Kouyate (£5.0m) – again playing at centre-half – and Newcastle United’s forgotten man Henri Saivet.

Gueye was withdrawn just before the game entered stoppage time.

The Lions of Teranga then saw off Tunisia in a tense semi-final, with the game going to extra-time after a goalless 90 minutes.

Dylan Bronn headed into his own net to give Senegal the victory, although Mane had earlier wasted an excellent chance when screwing a shot wide after rounding Tunisia goalkeeper Mouez Hassan.

That was the Liverpool winger’s only attempt on goal in the entire game and he was perhaps more peripheral than he had been throughout the tournament.

The former Southampton man also ceded penalty-taking duties after two misses from the spot in the tournament, allowing Saivet to step up from 12 yards in the 80th minute – only for the Newcastle man to see his effort saved.

Mane said:

It’s a momentary withdrawal. I have missed penalties in both games and must admit that it is not a good ratio.

I do not want to penalise my team and, at least for the time being, I’m going to stand aside for the penalties and let other teammates get on with it.

When I return to my club, I will continue to work hard to improve on this aspect.

Tunisia had a penalty award of their own overturned after VAR intervention, meanwhile.

Mane, Saivet, Gueye and Kouyate played all 120 minutes of Sunday’s semi-final.

Nigeria 2-1 South Africa
Ivory Coast 1-1 Algeria (3-4 penalties)
Algeria 2-1 Nigeria

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) will be up against Mane and Senegal in Friday’s final after Algeria saw off Nigeria in dramatic fashion.

Mahrez curled in an injury-time free-kick to give his country a 2-1 win, having earlier forced an own goal from Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong with a fizzed cross from the right flank.

Mahrez, Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) and Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) played the full 90 minutes for their respective countries, while Leon Balogun (£4.5m) was an unused substitute for the Super Eagles.

Algeria had progressed to the semis following a penalty shootout victory over Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals.

Neither Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) nor (surprisingly) Mahrez were on the field by the time the game reached that point, having been replaced on 94 and 86 minutes respectively.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) was also withdrawn in extra time but the Aston Villa striker had at least found the back of the net by that point, collecting Zaha’s pass and rifling in a low shot from the edge of the Algerian box.

The Palace winger cut a frustrated figure at times and picked up a booking after a clash with Ramy Bensebaini, although the Algerian defender didn’t do himself any favours with a theatrical reaction after contact with Zaha’s arm.

Serge Aurier (£5.0m), who has picked up hamstring and wrist injuries during the tournament, watched the game from the sidelines.

A day earlier, Nigeria had seen off South Africa in their own quarter-final.

Iwobi impressed and it was from his cross down the left that Nigeria first took the lead, with Samuel Chukwueze finishing at the second attempt.

Troost-Ekong scored an 89th-minute winner before Iwobi was replaced by Balogun in injury time.

Ndidi again lasted the course in central midfield.

The tournament is not over for Nigeria despite their subsequent semi-final defeat: the third-place play-off takes place on Wednesday evening between Tunisia and the Super Eagles.

Anyone starting with a TV of 99.5m, 0.5m ITB?

catch an early bandwagon without a hit?

Possibly start with a cheap 4.5m starter in midfield and save up to 3m for early adopting?

If anyone is serious about 4-5-1, I implore you to save a few quid as otherwise say goodbye to your wildcard early doors!

*Kinda meant 5-4-1, but 4-5-1 and 5-3-2 are both questionable too!

      Ederson
      Trent Robbo Laporte 4.5m
      Sterling Perez Salah Moura
      Deul King

      Kelly Dendoncker Greenwood.

      For 4.5m currently on Ward.

I have 0.5 spare and don't anticipate needing to buy a Liverpool player on Friday night. Got Salah, Red Robbo, Vvd. It is another reason to go heavy Scouse at the start, don't be struggling to get someone in before others have played.

" ... Anyone starting with a TV of 99.5m, 0.5m ITB? ...". Maybe I'm completely out of touch but I always assumed most managers started seasons with money in the bank.

    Arsed:

    Ryan
    Digne, TAA, VVD, Ake, Laporte
    Pogba, Sterling, Salah
    Giroud, King

    Button, Dendoncker, Noble, Greenwood

Pogba's a knee-jerk after today but likelihood is that I'll go with KDB and Laporte will go to Zinchenko if he emerges as 1st choice LB. Which combo would you prefer?

Think he's a bit of a rotation risk with Gomez back. VVD guaranteed to play every game.

If TAA plays full season he's likely to out score him but don't forget Robbo only outscored VVD by 5 points.

And THAT will never happen again. Reckon pool will keep CS but Robbo and Trent won't be anywhere near as lethal.

Klopp bought a LB to cover Robbo. Matip, Lovren and Gomez are cover - all defenders are equally susceptible to being rested, but TAA no more than the others.

Probably as relevant as everyone else's especially when every other post is the same question.

I really appreciate those people who can spark an interesting debate or invoke a discussion about stats and the empirical side of the game along with how the club is run etc rather than just asking how to play the game.

              Its wholly insipid.

Aurier is also up for sale, it's looking likely that kwp and foyth will be looking to take the spot if he goes, hoping one nails it down in pre-season for a 5.0 way into their Def.

That's said I'd rather get one of their CBs probably Sanchez as he offers a bit more in attack

I watched the Man Utd. friendly tonight and I'm now really tempted to get AWB over Dinge. He assisted their first goal and looked really assured during the first half (he wasn't played in the second half). I know that his fixtures aren't as good and the rest of the Utd. defence can be a bit suspect, but he actually looks. Like a really.good.player.at.RB for them and he's 0.5M cheaper.

Anyone else made a decision on him?

Don't think the defence was really tested. I don't want a defender who doesn't get clean sheets however many assists they have. But my current draft does have triple United: Pogba, Rashford and Greenwood.

The guy is making a decision based WHOLLY on one pre-season friendly.

And if you think my initial comment was a response to you it wasn't, it was to OP.

I believe if you make a stupid, unfounded or inane comment online you should be brought up on it and criticised for it. Far too many vacuous and insipid opinions floating around that cloud other people's judgement.

                          Its just ridiculous.

confident in Taylor with the signing of Pieters? Or do you mean the Villa defender (don't know him)

Nice team overall...personally would downgrade Diop and upgrade Graelish to Perez

I expect Taylor to be first choice at Burnley. Pieters was relegated and has been poddling around with a mid-table Championship side.

Have watched all City and Liverpool goals of last season yesterday and methinks VVD has a higher chance of repeating same than Laporte, whose points appear to come more out of positional chance than determination and persistence the way VVD did.

I'm assuming SSKAA will all be firing throughout the season, with varying patches of good and bad form. Barring injuries it's pretty tough to predict when any of them will get points as they all are capable of scoring in both the big and small games. Trust in the 2 or 3 you select, again barring injury or some other major unforeseen factor.

                            Don't understand the question.

Salah and Sterling are forwards but in midfield in the game.

They are the two best players in the league and top point scorers.

                            You can't have everyone.

Those forwards could do EXACTLY the same as Salah and Sterling (which they won't) and they will score less points come end of the season.

                          Pope
                          Digne - Robbo - VVD - Laporte
                          Tielemans - Siggy - Salah - Romeu
                          Kun - Giroud

                          Button - O'Connell - Townsend - Greenwood

Tempted to downgrade Giroud to go VVD -> TAA, or upgrade Romeu. Thoughts welcome.

Being a chelsea fan you should consider giroud as watch and buy. New manager with lot of young players. I am waiting for the preseason as well as first 2-3 matches. Additionally chelsea has tough early fixtures

                            C. King is better value than wilson. King is on penalty spot duties.

All of a sudden I've got my eye on Ryan Fraser.

Maybe his goal has me biased, but the guy did work for me last season and I'd much prefer him as a BOU representative than King, who is just so inconsistent and a known troll around these parts.

Fraser creates so many chances. Surely the first two weeks are haul worthy for a midfielder?

At home to a pumped up newly promoted side, then away in a game they are not going to be favourites for. Not for me.

If King is on penalties surely he's better for it?

Fraser was exceptional last season but its a big ask for him to do it again. The creativity could come from a whole range of Bmouth players right now. I'd say King offers best value early on in season for those reasons.

Good thing about Fraser being so cheap is he's easily shoehorned if he really does pick up from where left off last season.

Itd be interesting to see how many players either exceed or match previous seasons points returns.

Think AWB or Shaw could surprise us with Maguire (not to mention DDG) bolstering Utd's defence.

I'd like to think Emerson is a great shout. If he's nailed he's a good defender who can score/put in a ball.

Depends who Frank goes with. But I'd say he's one to watch.

I do like Ake for 5m. If he stays at Bmouth he will play all the time and hopefully he won't leave for City or somewhere like that where he'll be limited.

I do think Delph offers more value than most think but it's hard to look past Digne at 6m or Coleman at 5.5m for Everton.

Saying that if you're happy to downgrade defender, Pickford at 5.5 offers great value. Third highest scoring keeper last season and he's consistent in FPL.

Just need to see what happens RE Zouma as he was inspirational for Everton last season. Hopefully they reinforce at the back a bit more.

I do like Holebas or Cathcart for cheap options and if Dunk goes to Leicester he's an absolute no brainer for 4.5m

Opposite - so many good players to feed him the ball - he'll be in his element.

Not at all. I think Tielemans - a great player indeed - will play in a much deeper role tnah last term, so it is him who I see a bit overestimated as a fantasy asset, not Vardy.

100%. It's almost like Tielemans was a bit OOP last season. He'll drop deeper and let Maddison, Barnes, Perez, Gray etc do the attacking

Vardy is a strange one. He's getting on a bit and relies on playing off the shoulder. Don't know too much about Leicester but I'm interested about their pre season.

I think if Vardy needs a rest then Perez could step in up top.

Iheanacho really just hasn't settled in well enough...

I think Leicester are the most exciting team to watch out for outside the top 6 this year. If I was a Leicester fan I'd be quietly optimistic of breaking that top 6 but I think they need another out and out striker.
