The FPL line-up lessons we learned from Gameweek 1

With new signings, new managers and indeed three new teams clouding the water, anticipating the Gameweek 1 line-ups was always going to be tricky.

Our pre-season coverage helped point us in the right direction and there weren’t as many shocks as there might have been in the various starting XIs.

There were still lessons to be learned, though, so we will discuss each team selection on a match-by-match basis in the article below.

Liverpool v Norwich City

Liverpool were in their tried-and-tested 4-3-3, with Divock Origi patrolling the left flank.

Sadio Mane, late back from the Africa Cup of Nations, emerged as a 74th-minute substitute to replace the Belgian on the wing.

Alisson began the match in goal but budget FPL goalkeeper Adrian – listed above – came on for the injured Brazil international in the first half.

As happened in the Community Shield, Joe Gomez was given the nod over Joel Matip alongside Virgil van Dijk at centre-half.

Norwich were short on fit centre-halves, so Ben Godfrey and Grant Hanley were the pair selected at the heart of the defence.

Kenny McLean was chosen over Mario Vrancic and Moritz Leitner in the double-pivot, although the latter came on before the hour-mark.

£4.5m midfielder Todd Cantwell, who has also featured in place of Marco Stiepermann in pre-season, edged out Onel Hernandez on the left flank.

Hernandez came on late in the game, with Cantwell moving inside and indeed completing 90 minutes.

West Ham United v Manchester City

Leroy Sane injured, Raheem Sterling – as happened in the Community Shield – shifted over to the left flank and Gabriel Jesus led the line in a 4-3-3.

Sergio Aguero replaced the Brazilian midway through the second half.

With Bernardo Silva nursing a minor muscle problem, Riyad Mahrez was promoted to the right flank despite not kicking a ball in pre-season – the Algerian having been involved with his country at the Africa Cup of Nations.

There were no great surprises elsewhere, with Oleksandr Zinchencko and Kyle Walker at full-back – Joao Cancelo only match-fit enough for the bench – and John Stones preferred to Nicolas Otamendi at centre-half.

With West Ham without the injured Mark Noble, Jack Wilshere dropped back alongside Declan Rice in the double-pivot.

Despite Pablo Fornals having started the last three pre-season friendlies, it was Michail Antonio who joined Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini in the attacking trident behind Sebastien Haller.

Antonio, who had started the game on the left flank, was hooked at half-time and replaced by ‘number ten’ Fornals, with Lanzini moving across to the left wing.

Anderson was again deployed on the right flank in Manuel Pellegrini’s 4-2-3-1.

Bournemouth v Sheffield United

Perhaps the biggest formation surprise of the weekend was Eddie Howe opting to go with a 3-4-3 against Sheffield United, although the unavailability of wingers Arnaut Danjuma and David Brooks perhaps forced his hand.

Josh King and Ryan Fraser played either side of Callum Wilson, with Adam Smith and £4.0m-rated Diego Rico used as wing-backs.

Goalscorer Chris Mepham joined Nathan Ake and Steve Cook in a back three, with Aaron Ramsdale getting the nod over Bournemouth’s other three senior goalkeepers between the posts.

There were no real shocks in the visitors’ starting XI, with a wing-back system one Chris Wilder used in the Championship last season.

FPL defender John Lundstram was brought in alongside John Fleck and Oliver Norwood to bolster midfield in a 3-5-2, with attacking midfielder Luke Freeman thrown on for Lundstram on 78 minutes as Wilder chased the game and reverted to a 3-4-1-2.

Burnley v Southampton

It was as you were for Burnley, with Sean Dyche sticking with the 4-4-2 that he has favoured for much of his tenure at Turf Moor.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood kept up their ever-present league record in 2019 up top, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson back on the right wing having played second fiddle to Jeff Hendrick for much of this calendar year.

Charlie Taylor still wasn’t quite match-fit enough so Erik Pieters made his Burnley debut at left-back and collected two assists.

Having started pre-season in a 4-2-2-2, Southampton finished the summer in a similar wing-back system that Ralph Hasenhuttl rolled out in 2018/19 and indeed a 3-4-3 was used again in Lancashire.

Che Adams had featured on the right flank over the summer but it was Danny Ings who was moved wide to allow the ex-Birmingham striker to feature centrally, with Nathan Redmond stationed on the left.

Illness apparently kept Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on the bench for most of the game, with James Ward-Prowse and Oriel Romeu playing in tandem in central midfield.

Jack Stephens got the nod over Maya Yoshida at centre-half but was sacrificed for Hojbjerg late on as Hasenhuttl reverted to a back four.

Crystal Palace v Everton

Roy Hodgson started this season as he finished last, with Palace in a 4-4-2.

Jordan Ayew was paired alongside Christian Benteke in attack, with Wilfried Zaha brought on alongside the Belgian midway through the second half.

Scott Dann and £4.0m defender Martin Kelly saw off the challenge of Gary Cahill at centre-half.

Everton were also in a familar shape to last season, with Richarlison and Bernard on the right and left respectively of a 4-2-3-1.

All of the players in the starting XI were on the books last season, although Moise Kean replaced Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front midway through the second half and Jean-Philippe Gbamin was brought on for the injured Andre Gomes just before half-time.

Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off and will miss Gameweek 2.

Analyse Palace v Everton in detail here

Watford v Brighton and Hove Albion

Gameweek 1 featured something we hadn’t seen last season: Gerard Deulofeu starting a Premier League match on the wing.

Now an FPL forward, of course, Deulofeu was sacrificed for Roberto Pereyra at the break, with the Argentina international still working his way back up to full match-fitness after the Copa America.

Craig Dawson was included at centre-half and was the only starter on either side who wasn’t at his club in 2018/19.

Graham Potter had trialled a 3-4-3 in the final two games of pre-season and that was indeed the formation that he deployed on Saturday.

Leandro Trossard remained an unused substitute as Pascal Gross and Jurgen Locadia flanked Glenn Murray in attack.

Florin Andone and Neal Maupay replace the latter two players in the second half and both scored.

Solly March and FPL defender Martin Montoya were used as wing-backs.

Analyse Watford v Brighton in detail here

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa

Spurs started Saturday’s game in a 4-4-2 diamond, with Erik Lamela playing just off Harry Kane and Lucas Moura in attack.

The introduction of Christian Eriksen for Harry Winks saw Lucas and Lamela pull wide and Kane lead the line in a 4-2-3-1.

Villa were in their familiar 4-1-4-1 shape, with Conor Hourihane starting at the base of the midfield but later replaced by new recruit Douglas Luiz.

Trezeguet was preferred to – and eventually replaced by – Jota on the right.

There was a surprise in the full-back department, with last season’s first-choice pairing of Neil Taylor and Mohamed Elmohamady preferred to 2019 signings Matt Targett and Frederic Guilbert.

Only Targett made the bench, with Guilbert not among the substitutes.

Analyse Spurs v Aston Villa in detail here

Leicester City v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Brendan Rodgers opted for a 4-3-3 as he attempted to put pressure on Wolves’ back three.

Ayoze Perez played on the right of a front three with Jamie Vardy and James Maddison.

Hamza Choudhury was sacrificed in the second half as substitute Harvey Barnes took over on the left flank, with Maddison moving infield alongside Youri Tielemans in a 4-1-4-1.

Wolves were as they were for much of last season, with Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez stationed up top in a 3-5-2.

Patrick Cutrone replaced Jota for the final 15 minutes.

Analyse Leicester v Wolves in detail here

Newcastle United v Arsenal

Matt Ritchie recovered from injury to take up the same left wing-back role he occupied last season, with Newcastle United in a 3-5-2.

Ritchie moved infield when Jonjo Shelvey limped off, with Jetro Willems taking over on the left.

An ‘out of position’ Miguel Almiron partnered Joelinton up front, with substitute Allan Saint-Maximin joining them in a front three late on.

Unai Emery mostly used a 4-2-3-1 in pre-season and indeed that was the formation favoured on Tyneside, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the line after a stint on the right flank this summer.

Alexandre Lacazette, only just back from an ankle injury, was an unused substitute.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson started in the attacking midfield positions behind the Gabon international, with summer signings Gabriel Martinelli, Dani Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe replacing them in the second half.

Pepe took up a left-wing role.

With new signing David Luiz also not called upon on the bench, Calum Chambers started at centre-half.

Analyse Newcastle United v Arsenal in detail here

Manchester United v Chelsea

United and Chelsea both lined up in a 4-2-3-1, as they had ended pre-season.

FPL midfielder Anthony Martial led the line for the hosts, with Marcus Rashford stationed on the left.

Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard started the game in the hole and on the right respectively, although interchanged on occasion.

Paul Pogba was positioned on the right of a central midfield two, having played almost exclusively on the left last season.

Frank Lampard sacrificed Christian Pulisic to fit both Mason Mount and Ross Barkley into the same starting XI, with Barkley occupying the left-wing role and Mount playing just off striker Tammy Abraham.

Pulisic replaced Barkley on the hour-mark, with Mount finishing the game.

Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic lined up in the double-pivot, with N’Golo Kante replacing the former in the last 20 minutes.

    ON KNEE-JERKERS

It's a controversial topic - how do you define a knee-jerker? Since it depends on one's motivation and is thus subjective, it becomes a bone of contention. I propose a very simple measure.
Let's take a very clear concrete example: Pukki.
If someone transfers him in now for GW2, is that a knee-jerk? My view is - don't know, can't judge, so give the benefit of the doubt.
If Pukki doesn't score in GW2 and the same person is back looking to dump Pukki for GW3, THAT'S a "knee-jerk".

    Fair?

A knee jerk is maybe taking a hit or two to bring in a player immediately after one good performance shredding the team and structure that they may have spent atleast a week mulling over, despite other teams playing midweek and not waiting on any team news for injuries. I guess.

That's not necessarily 'knee-jerk' though. Close analysis of Pukki's performance, given we haven't seen him in the PL before, could result in a careful decision to get him in. But moving him on after one game would suggest that the decision was not made after careful analysis, but a simple judgement based on scoring a goal.

By the same logic, moving on the player you're replacing with Pukki after one game is not done with careful analysis but a simple judgment based on not scoring a goal.

I don't see anyway the topic is controversial, it's a subjective term and just a bit of banter really. You can define the term for yourself, doesn't mean anyone will agree.

Controversial in that some people get quite upset about being 'accused' of it, leading to some heated posts. Should be harmless banter, but this is the internet in 2019!

Knee jerking imo means chasing scores. For eg replacing King with origi because he outscored him. The reason that individual went with king was first two fixtures.

On the other hand, I'll give my example. I started with Vertonghen, but now I am really unsure about his game time with reports coming that he will be rotated. Hence I am thinking about removing him to an Everton defender which will be a long term move.

Totally in line with my thinking. The Vert situation is one that couldn't have been anticipated, and you're looking at defenders who not simply got last week's points but look secure for the future too (nb I have Pickford and 2 Everton defenders!)

giving up on your thought process just after one performance is what I would call a knee-jerk.

I agree, but you can't know another poster's thought process, which is why I'm suggesting more objective criteria.

I consider a knee jerk as any decision taken over one good or bad performance of a player, without regard to the broader context or their broader plan. Transferring in Origi after his goal is an example.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

Yes, that's certainly the clearest example for this week. But maybe some people had deeper reasons for getting him in this week (???). The question is, how many of them will sell him after GW2?
Those who sell Origi after GW2 will claim they got him for GW1 and he hauled, and that's fair enough. But no one had Pukki before GW1, so we know anyone who sells him next week knee-jerked.

Pukki needn't be a knee jerk if the transfer is based on an assessment that he proved himself against an allegedly water tight Liverpool defense. Origi will have limited game time, so jerking him in is super naive.

            • 12 Years
            5 years, 2 months ago

That's exactly what I'm saying. If you make that assessment and retain him even if he does nothing in GW2, that's not a knee-jerk. If you get him for GW2 and transfer him out quickly after, that is.

I had Wood for Burnley and I thought he would be in a few weeks. To be honest I couldn’t decide on my 6.5 but went wood as he is proven in PL.
he has xG of 0.04 and 1 shot all game and wasn’t in great positions. This is in a game where the team dominated and they won comfortably. Of course, it could be a one off but I then look at Pukki (who I wanted from the start but bottled it as this forum didn’t have enough love) and I have now transferred him in as he is “the man” and not sharing goals with a Barnes equivalent and if I just leave him cannot see him getting less than 10-15 of Norwich goals this season. I have brought him in now and he will stay until GW38 unless a injury.

This is quite knee jerk I guess, but also thought out over some stats and my view

Isn’t this what the game is about though?

Yes. After all that research on Wood, taking him out after one game was hasty. Now you've analysed Pukki and committed yourself to him being a season-keeper. So let's see, if he disappoints this weekend and you drop him, you're a knee-jerker! 😉

I’m considering the same move. Although I wouldn’t blame this forum for me not buying Pukki in the first place. I just looked at pre season and saw wood scored a lot. His fixtures now look quite tough; I really wanted him to get off to a good start against Southampton

This, I was only joking about the forum, I just think too much sharing of points at Burnley but Norwich won the championship for a reason and they will do ok this year and Pukki will only improve as he gets used to the league. If he cast a goal away ta Liverpool it gives you hope anything is possible.

Have both (and Sterling). I'm leaning towards Auba currently.

Although it is the reason I own him, I think we need to move away from the thinking"I have to captain him". We have new information now. Main worry is that he won't have any support again. Keeping a keen eye on the pressers.

After watching the Super Cup I have a feeling Zouma will retain his place with Rudiger coming back after the Christensen substitution. And he's not a bad risk at 5.0M.

Barkley on the other hand worries me a bit more. Do we see him consistently starting for Chelsea? Lampard has a lot of attackers that are similar in skill rating in my opinion.

With all said? Which transfer do you recommend?

      1) Lucas>Martial - Lucas could get replaced by Son soon
      2) Barkley>Sissoko, McGinn, Jorginho (pens) - specify
      3) Save, perhaps move Lucas to Son when he's back

      Thanks

I’d normally agree with that sentiment but Moura was always going to be a short term punt and really it was all about GW1.

Good point on Jorginho! I completely ignored that he took the pen over both Barkley and Abraham. He could prove to be great value if he has them over Willian. Don't see why he wouldn't, he's an excellent pen taker.

Another way of looking at the CB substitution is that Frank prioritised keeping Christensen fresh for GW2.
The midfield is certainly a concern. At Old Trafford his midfield was too open and attacking, and they got hurt. Last night he put out 3 defensive midfielders, sacrificing all creativity - and they did much better.
So will he play the same 3 and bench Barkley and Mount? Don't know, but now is not the time to purchase a Chelsea midfielder or striker. If I already had Barkley would I sell him now? No, too knee-jerky, let's see what happens on Sunday first. This is precisely why it's important to have a viable bench, to avoid too-hasty transfers.

So with options 1 and 2, I'd ask 'Why did you get them in the first place? Surely not for one GW?' Always better to have the flexibility of 2FT.

I was sure zouma was nailed until week 1, he wont keep his place with performances like that, christensen has been much more assured, but offers less going forward. Zouma has to avoid any more gaffs

Great game last night and made me confident Chelsea will provide some decent Fantasy assets this season. Am I GTG?

        Pope
        TAA VVD Digne Montoya
        Salah Sterling Perez Trossard
        Aubameyang (c) Jota

        4.0 Dendocker Greenwood Rico 1FT

Your team is fine, with Donkers poised should Trossard sit out again.
          See my post re. knee-jerking.

About your first point - which assets?
After conceding 4 on Sunday, I wouldn't be rushing to get defenders.
He put out 3 defensive midfielders - not FPL material.
Pulisic first game, not nailed, Giroud better than Tammy.
Can't see who you specifically have in mind.

Think once Rudiger is back in the defence and with Kante back and given the fixtures they have, Emerson could prove a very good option. Pulisic and Mount showed lots of promise, especially the latter who is at a better price point to take the odd benching. Chelsea are moving the ball around quicker than they did under Sarri and now have the fixtures to turn that potential into goals and FPL points.

Keep Jota for as long as he is injury free. He is a brilliant footballer. Use transfers where your team needs them the most.. Ie maybe trossard next week and for another defender for gw 4 so that you don't have to play Montoya vs city

Haha. First half of the season was a guy pretending to be Jota.. The second half of the season was the Jota I knew and loved from the championship and he was fantastic. Even if his end product was worse than benteke(which it isn't).. he creates more than benteke and gets into better positions and shoots more than benteke.

eh, his tactical skills are almost Origi level. Yes good on the ball and runs a lot but mostly he is a decent american footballer, who was fifth chioce in Dortmund last year. Behind danish teenager Jens brun larsen in the pecking order, says a lot to me. Pedro is preferred by Lampard and the reason is not his excellent footballing skills alone, but his tactical and game-reading skills as well.In the same way the reason why Klopp still uses Milner, and to a certain degree Henderson. You can´t play with 11 headless chickens no matter how good they are in the technical department, dribbling skills, because you get overrunned and outplayed by your opponents.

Anyone else feel Salah minutes will be managed this weekend? I reckon he’ll start but come off early if Liverpool is winning comfortably by 70th min.

Would you captain Salah and save FT or sell Kane for Auba(c)?

I'm thinking about it. One part of me says keep Salah (c), Sterling (vc), but then it might happen that Salah comes off early or worse, comes on as a late sub for 1 point. Will make a final decision on Saturday after press conferences.

I wasn’t referring to benching in ff.

Klopp practically never rests him, they played friday, not sunday, anyone projecting him to play less than 75 is kidding themselves. Even that is good enough to score a ht vs southampton, they look porous.

Ya I'm just playing this season via maths. Salah will be my captain almost every game since he offers the highest ppg and almost no rotation risk. Last year I dodged too many points switching captains. Have Salah as captain and about 5 players who could touch 200 points alongside him but who I won't really captain unless I really have to

Not as simple as that. He's more likely to play 90 mins in those as opposed to coming off on 59 mins when Liverpool are coasting against easier opposition.

Good analysis tbh, Salah has proven consistency over the years and more of safe choice pick but I just feel this season, Mané is a good competitor and a viable replacement for Salah especially if one needs the extra £1.0 elsewhere

By dropping KDB to someone like Norwood, you can get Aubameyang/Kane for Ings which allows different formations.

Possibly Zouma, not sure why Christensen came off but I am not sure his fitness can be relied on. Suspect Rudiger and Zouma will be first choice this weekend.

I would have been worried when the game KO last night. But then I saw gomez play at RB and realised id be fooling myself if I thought he d steal too many minutes from TAA. He isn't a right back and offers almost nothing going forward apart from one pass.. And while he is good at defending he is still prone to a few errors on the right. Considering Liverpool barely use their midfield to attack I think they totally rely on the front 3, Robbo and TAA for any attacking moves. I'm a Robertson owner.. But I kinda wish I had TAA too lol

TAA isn't an issue. Assuming you've got decent bench cover, keep your fingers crossed re Barkley.

Walker is a nailed man. If he drops form then yes, that could be a worry for walker owners but Cancelo can play on the left, knowing Pep so well, he will drop Oleksandr if Cancelo is to start

Too late now but why did you wildcard? Team looked v good to me except perhaps the strikers

On your team it looks decent but lots of ‘different’ picks.

                                  - Pulisic is an unknown
                                  - I understand getting auba but planning a transfer for next week already to Kane seems needlessly risky
                                  - Mane vs Salah is a debate for the ages - nearly everyone will have salah (as mane didn’t play week 1) so salah outperforms mane big rank drop for you, mane outperforms salah big rank gain for you.
                                  - Zouma is a great price but I’m unconvinced he is nailed and also that Chelsea can defend
                                  - Zinchenko is either a superb value pick or a transfer waiting to happen.

very good points and I have had a thought about them

                                    1. My initial plan was to get Mount from chelsea, but after yesterdays game Pulisic looked like a must have considering the way chelsea moving the ball n creating chances; Their fixtures are great as well
                                    2. Because i ve wildcarded, i thought of picking the best captaincy option for this GW and Auba was the one for me 🙂
                                    3. Again this was based on yesterdays game and 2nd half od last season, i guess Mane will be very close to salahs points by the end of the season from the positions he has been taking in the penalty box, and could use the extra 1.0 elsewhere
                                    4. Zouma to Emerson done and will see how chelsea defends in coming weeks
                                    5. wil move on from ziv to laporte in coming weeks based on if/when ziv is taken off the first team

finally, the reason why I wilcarded was JUST COULDNT RESIST 🙂

Can’t say I’m confident about a good game week!

                              Captain choice isn’t clear.

                              Double pool defence bit shaky.

Leicester and Bournemouth blanks this weekend and a lot of people (me included) are going to be under serious pressure with Perez/ Vardy/ King/ Wilson/ Fraser as all will then likely fall - would be some big decisions early on

I’m trying to visualise Perez, King and Robinson hattricks for the weekend 🙂

I folded before the prem kicked off and took out my double Bournemouth attack- couldn’t be confident on them continuing as per last year - still Wilson is my main striker and I’d have to start considering options for sure

Perez is dirt cheap could easily become McGinn if he looks good again

More on Perez being cheap is that I don’t expect returns every week, so either ab option presents itself or quite happy to hold

Definitely looking to sell one or both of Fraser and Wilson this week.

Ideally would like to keep Wilson long term as BOU have decent fixtures but he has to score this week.

Does anybody else every worry that their mini league rival may see their comments and transfer ideas via these FFS pages? I know my username is also my FPL team name
