Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 2?

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

Part of me is now thinking of going with Stirling. That 120 minutes Salah went through can not be helpful. Citeh will score well against anyone. I think they set the marker this weekend.

        Do it

Liverpool will be physically and mentally stunted. They'll win, but we won't be seeing a rout. City have beaten spurs by 3 or 4 three times in the last 6. Nineteen goals in six fixtures overall

Depends which way you wanna look at it, three of their four meetings last season ended 1-0. Personally I see City edging it but I can’t see too many goals with Sissoko, Ndombele and Winks sitting in front of the back four.

In their last 6 home games against spurs

Liverpool playing away. Post midweek physical and mental exertion. Saints rested. Sterling in form.

Not even a competition for me

Personally, I’d discount the CL second leg, they have ability to throw up those kind of score lines. Then we’re going back to 2017 for the last 4 goals - does that hold any relevance with Dier, Trippier, Dembele etc in the eleven? Not for me. I’m not doubting Sterling could score by the way, I just don’t think City will blow them away.

The current spurs team is considerably worse without dembele, trippier on his game, Kane about three ankle injuries to the worse and with eriksen and son on the sidelines and not yet in their groove.

I don't expect it will necessarily be a rout. But do I want a refreshed and on fire sterling or a not refreshed and in middling form Salah

City looked so good against West Ham I think they will comfortably outscore everyone this year.

Probably going to set the (C) on Sterling and keep it there until something major occurs. My prediction is people will be scrambling for more City attacking options after this gameweek.

A case for Emerson but in zinc you’ve high chances of CS points every game

Whilst there is growing uncertainty over him starting this is all conjecture

If they both play zinc will outscore Emerson

But sure that claim will stack up all that well. When Rudiger is back Chelsea have a very sound defence with Kante in front of them.

On any single occasion Emerson could very easily outscore Zinks 6 points and over the course of the season all bets are off.

If Zinchenko plays every game he will almost certainly be the best value defender. Emerson only outscores him based on more minutes imo (which I think he will get eventually but that's the point to switch)

lots of love for pukki this week ,ive finished up with him by default.

      kdb to sterling

      vardy to pukki -4

crap decision gw1 went without sterling had to be rectified quickly cos prices playing a part ,what do you think lads right or too hasty?

Good move i think. As far as gw1 transfers go, on the sensible forward looking side...

      Wilson

For GW2, play two of the following together with the above: Jota, Wood, Trossard, Dunk

      ...?

Thats a headache. Benchboost gw1? I would go with the 2 strickers but trossard can be great if he starts.

How long do you think you can afford not to have Sterling in your team?

I want to give my team a chance, but I'm scared that I'm going to get punished if I don't get him in soon.

Have Salah, Kane & KDB in my team.

Not comfortable with King, Trossard and Barkley. However, the right thing to do is save my FT, right?

      Ryan
      VVD Robbo Zinchenko
      Salah Sterling Trossard Barkley Dendoncker
      Kane King

      Button; Lundstram KWP Wickham

Save and once GW2 is done, have a look at changes.

I have Trossard too and may even keep him depending on his performance. He will either start or come on a sub. So I want will wait and see.
