Why are Liverpool yet to keep a clean sheet in 2019/20?

Owners of Liverpool defenders are becoming increasingly concerned with their defensive potential this season.

After keeping 21 clean sheets last season, Jurgen Klopp’s men are yet to record one in 2019/20.

Liverpool have already conceded to Norwich at Anfield as well as against Southampton in Gameweek 2.

With many Fantasy managers still doubled-up at the back for the Reds, we have taken another look at the data to see what we can learn.

The aim is to discover whether or not Liverpool have been unfortunate not to keep a clean sheet yet or if there are serious issues at the back for them.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

How did Liverpool’s defence do in Gameweek 2?

Lessons learned from Gameweek 2

    Is it too risky to have a bench of

    Greenwood - Lundstram - Kelly (or whoever is the best 4.0)?

      I personally wouldn't like that bench. Surely with Pep roulet and maybe some changes in the Liverpool defense over the season.

    2. Bednarkek to Lundstram and Richarlison to Martial for free
    3. Maddison to Martial and Van Dijk to Wan Bissaka for free

      Salah, VVD and KDB to stay.

      If you not happy with Wilson, Pukki may be a good shout.

      You will be missing Sterling though and do not do it for Salah or KDB.

      For me nr 2 and nr 3 are the best options there.

      Possibly Wilson to Pukki and Richarlison to Martial ? And then some extra cash to spend on your next transfer

      6. Wild card

      Besides midfield changes, I would be looking for a second 4.5 GK, a City defender, and possibly a United/Wolves/Leicester defender (based on 5.5/5.0/4.5 available budget for the 4th def slot) and going down to 2 forwards, possibly 11.0+ and 6.5+.

    Two thoughts I'd love to hear your thoughts on:

    1.A) Mane + Rashford (No spurs and double Man U)
    or
    B) Son + Firmino?

    2. Which, if any, 5.5 attacker would you pick? Needs to be playing more than Wickham / Greenwood for that extra million, but would still be benched some times.

      I think I’d prefer A because both could explode. Firmino more likely to be steady but not spectacular.

      I wouldn’t bother moving either of those 4.5 to a 5.5 FWD. I think that $1M is better spent elsewhere.

      That's a close one, if we ignore both Liverpool & ManU players with the assumption they get similar points. Then B edges for me due to KDB

      • 6 Years

      If you have 2-3 defenders you can basically start every week, I would go with B.

        1. mcgrejam

          My team could be...

          Pope
          Mina, AWB, Lundstrom
          KDB, Ceballos, Mane, Martial, Sterling
          Pukki, Kane

          1. Karhumies
            • 12 Years
            5 years, 1 month ago

            My current team is very similar after GW1 WC.

            Ryan - Pope
            Robertson, Coleman, Boly, Soyuncu, Kelly (looking to switch Robbo + Kelly into Zinc + 5.5 def over next 2 weeks)
            Mane, Sterling, KDB, Ceballos, Dendoncker (should have chosen Cantwell over Denk I think)
            Auba, Pukki

            I feel that there are "natural pairings":

            Assists -> Goals
            Ceballos -> Auba
            Cantwell -> Pukki
            KDB -> Sterling

            When any of those pairings has an "on" week, it's a points magnet. When they are facing tough opposition, time to bench Cantwell/Ceballos.

    Resisting the urge to WC and going with this -4...

    Robbo/Wilson/Fraser to Son/Rashford/Lund.

    Attacking this GW with Son at home to New and Rash at home to Palace. Leaves me with a nice 3-5-2 and WC in hand. Thoughts?

    Ryan - (Button)
    VVD - Maguire - Digne - (Lund - Rico)
    Salah - Sterling - Son - Perez - McGinn
    Rashford - Adams - (Greenwood)

    Happy to give Adams/Perez another week to prove themselves with decent fixtures.

            Bournemouth already conceded 1 against Sheffield and 1 against Villa. I plan to use the triple captain bonus on Sterling because City is all fired up after not getting the 6-2 win over Tottenham they deserved because they were so wasteful.

      Jimenez to 4.5 for +3M

      +0.5 second GK
      +2.5M upgrade 2 defenders for 4-4-2 formation (Cantwell bench unless easy fixture)

      Wolves has better value in defense than offense currently IMO.

    Perez gets 2 more weeks to redeem himseIf
    Stupid or hopeful?

    If Kane blanks this week (against a rickety Newcastle defence) I'm switching to Auba.
    Knee Jerk or sensible move?

    Why do I have a feeling Arsenal's defense will be less leaky this year, and Luiz will be the pick of the bunch.
    Misguided or insightful?

      I was going to go with Kane but keeping Auba. Selling Perez, hopeful but will be priced out of good mids like Martial. Arsenal will continue to leak unfortunately, especially with AMN as their RB.

      I’m waiting for these next 2 games, see how Auba does, will bring in if he’s solid.

      Perez to Ceballos in gw5 looks good, depending on his minutes of course

    Having seen Jota and Jiminez play so far this season I don't think Jiminez is worth 1.0 more. Agreed?

      Agreed.

      Jimenez will probably score more as I see him get more minutes as their first striker. But Jota can be very explosive so he’s my pick atm

    How to use my two free transfers?

    A) Wilson & Salah --> Rashford & Mané

        Why get rid of Salah to fit in Rashford? Just do not understand this logic!!!

        And will Rashford score more than Wilson?

        Mané seems in better form than Salah, and Bournemouth has been awful. I also have King and I want more balance to my team.

          It has only been two gameeks. Salah attacking returns in GW1.

          Mane's turn GW2. How can it be that Mane is in better form when we are when we are not even finished GW3 with both having attacking returns?

          I am not saying Mane is not the one to go for but having Mane may mean you cannot get Salah when looking at his points return over the last 2 seasons. Salah is pretty much a set and forget in your team along with Sterling.

    Potential WC to this...

    Pope
    Mina, AWB, Lundstrom
    Ceballos, KDB, Sterling, Mane, Martial
    Pukki, Kane

    No playing subs except Kelly - worth a gamble or not?
