How the top 10k FPL managers set up for Gameweek 5

A number of Fantasy Premier League managers inside the top 10,000 deployed key chips for Gameweek 5.

5.2% of them opted to use the Wildcard over the international break, while 2.6% went for a Triple Captain.

With each passing Gameweek, the top 10k becomes less and less influenced by those who used multiple chips in the earliest rounds.

With Gameweek 5 now in the mix, only 37.9% of those in the highest echelon of FPL have deployed two chips.

12.7% have used three while 3.8% have already committed four of their chips.

As things stand, 32.2% of those in the top 10k have now used their Wildcard and we can also take a look at which players were the most popular in the Gameweek 5 editions.

By far, the most fashionable option in Gameweek 5 Wildcards among top 10k managers is Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m).

He has been selected in 77.2% of such squads, 7% more than any other player – which made for plenty of frustration when it was revealed he was on the bench for the trip to Norwich City.

Behind the Belgian is, not surprisingly, budget Sheffield United defender John Lundstram (£4.2m), who has been racking up regular game-time in the Blades’ central midfield trio.

Interestingly, it would appear that a number of Fantasy managers at the top level are opting for a double-pivot of bargain bucket defenders.

41.8% of top 10k managers who Wildcarded for Gameweek 5 also included Crystal Palace’s injured centre-back Martin Kelly (£4.1m) in their side.

That brings the total of top 10k managers in possession of both Lundstram and Kelly to 23.7%.

It is clear that the double savings in defence were influenced by interest in the more expensive Manchester City attackings.

Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) was snapped up by 66.2% of top 10k Wildcarders for Gameweek 5 with 58.4% going for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), making him the most-fashionable forward in such squads.

Interestingly, a total of 30.2% of the top 10k Wildcarders opted for both players in their brand new squads, although the two combined for just one attacking return against Norwich.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), who scored nine points in Saturday’s lunch-time game also features in the Wildcard picture here with 65.4% of those wielding that chip among the top 10k retaining faith in him.

The 35.7% who brought in Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) will be very happy with his huge haul away at Wolves and it’s interesting to see that he was preferred to fellow goal-scorer Mason Mount (£6.4m), who did not feature among the most popular midfield assets.

Instead, the man in that price bracket who drew the attention of Wildcarders in the top 10k was Daniel James (£6.2m), although he blanked against Leicester while Mount found the net late-on at Wolves.

We saw that Gameweek 3 Wildcards at this level largely featured a disposal of Liverpool defenders, but they are clearly back in fashion despite failing to keep a second clean sheet of the campaign against Newcastle.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) both feature among the most popular defenders in top 10k Wildcards, the right-back selected in 45.9% of these and his centre-back colleague in 29.9%.

Gameweek 5 Captains

Meanwhile, there was a big difference between the top 10k and everybody else when it came to choosing captains for Gameweek 5.

Those in the upper echelons largely favoured Aguero, with 39.1% of them handing the Manchester City man the armband.

Salah was backed by 30.9% and Sterling 19.2%.

The vote was much more evenly split from an overall perspective with Salah just about the most popular with a share of 23.3%.

Sterling was just behind him on 21.5% while Aguero was off in third place with 15.4%.

Not surprisingly given Norwich’s situation coming into Gameweek 5, there were also a number of Triple Captain chips deployed in the top 10k.

As already mentioned, 2.6% of them played this enhanced captaincy chip.

The majority of these were played on Aguero, 1.2% of those in the top 10k choosing the Manchester City forward, 0.6% on Sterling and 0.6% on Salah.

Seeing highlights of the City Game. Big fan of not only Otamendi sleeping, but also the silence of John Stones. Man didn't even whisper that Buendia was rushing his partner, silent as a corpse until Otamendi was robbed.

Yeah I WC last week and went for Auba as one of mine for a sort of break from Coty but got absolutely rocked by my Cheaper city picks too in Dilva KDB and Ota all getting 1 each ffs. Can’r Wait to lose Dilva

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 5 Years
            5 years, 1 month ago

I find it difficult to believe we have to say this, but being patient with City assets tends to be a better move than selling 'em

Except if it's for such lightning-in-a-bottle moves as Son's golden streak and what Pogba + Rashford did after Ole's appointment

I mean... Selling a City asset has to work big time because you KNOW they'll return to form. I remember when they had that 4-game dip or so without Dino last season then went on a streak where they won all games (10+?) until the season ended, ffs

            1. Ask Yourself
              • 8 Years
              5 years, 1 month ago

Yeah o think Dipva may be an exception to this rule. He gets next week and then he goes for better or worse I think. He was just a bad pick and I don’t want to look at him anymore. I want martial back he was so consistent 🙁

              1. Ze_Austin
                • 5 Years
                5 years, 1 month ago

I agree on Dilva. Not sure I'd trust Martial to stay fit, as I started the season with him and knew this was coming. Maybe ditch the price point entirely and go down to the likes of Mount/Cantwell or up to Son? Could work...

I'm tempted to ditch Ota, but a glance at GW6 fixtures screams instant punishment. Ota faces Watford. My replacements face Spurs or Norwich. GW7 switch to Soy would be easier to swallow

I am not sure about that. Looking at City defence, KDB will be a starter in midfield. They are not the same without him and Pep may go 4 2 3 1 or 4 4 2 to help out his defence...

Which of the above 3 players you mentioned loses their place if Pep goes 4 in the middle? He will not be going 3 at the back as that will be an utter disaster.

Will be interesting to see what Pep has planned to protect his back four.

Wow, your team is too similar to mine. Too much template going on.

Salah, Sterling and KDB in midfield will see the rest of your team looking pretty much the same as many others.

        Not for me.

Have 2 FT and 1.3 ITB

    Pope, Button
    TAA, Digne, Zinchenko, Lundstram, Kelly
Salah, Sterling, De Bruyne, Mount, Cantwell
    Pukki, Haller, Greenwood

    Thoughts?

Have exactly the same team apart from mcginn instead of Cantwell with 2 FT's and 0.2 in the bank.

Haven't a clue what to do myself

KdB will be my 6th captain of the season next week. May well use Son in 7 too for 7 from 7.

Anyone else on a similar programme?

        Why?

What is this record? Leicester seem steady in defence to me. No one has looked even close to clattering them yet.

Soyuncu to trip Son for a Kane pen.

Summary of advice I received on here before deadline..

    - Don't put in Son, De Bruyne same price
    - Don't put in Abraham he hasn't scored against a decent defence
    - Avoid Lamela, Alli is back

Not how it reads if you don't know the back story. 90% of people on here were saying De Bruyne > Son

I know tough to differentiate between the good and bad advice. There was an Aguero v KDB debate. I called out that KDB is likely to get rested and got mugged off. Massive smug grin on my face the next day

How does this look for next week? really irritated with Double Liverpool defence but not sure what to do..

    Pope(Button)
    TAA VVD Otamendi Digne(Rico)
    Salah Sterling KDB Ceballos (Dendoncker)
    Pukki Barnes(Greenwood)

    1ft, 0.5 itb.

A)Dendoncker to Cantwell and bench VVD
    B)VVD to Lundstram/Aurier/Other cheapie
C)Save and evaluate with 2 FT's next week
    D)Other

I'd be tempted by both A) and B) pretty soon.

As all defences are a bit rubbish, I’m thinking:

    A) Triple Sheffield United and KdB

    Or is the following better?

    B) Matip, Otamendi, Stones & Mount

The week I have only Sterling City win 4-0 and he blanks, I add KDB and Silva and Cantwell outscores all 3 of them 😀
Still looking good for next week? Best way to get Tammy in soon?
    Heaton
    TAA Digne Montoya (Lundstram)
    Salah Sterling KDB Silva Cantwell
    Haller Pukki (Ayew)
