Captain Poll

FPL managers set for more tough captaincy choices in Gameweek 9

After weeks of captaincy frustration, Fantasy Premier League managers are set for more tough armband decisions ahead of Gameweek 9.

Manchester City and Liverpool both have relatively challenging away matches next weekend, which could deter us from the usual suspects.

Pep Guardiola’s defending champions travel to Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, where Crystal Palace have conceded just one goal in four matches this season.

That strike came in the dying embers of a 1-1 draw with Wolves in Gameweek 6, courtesy of Diogo Jota (£6.1m).

Outside of that, the Eagles have kept clean sheets Everton, Aston Villa and Norwich in front of their own fans.

Manchester City assets underwhelmed in their 2-0 defeat to Wolves

Naturally, Manchester City do usually pose a greater threat, with owners of Sergio Aguero (£12.2m), Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) all hoping for both starts and returns this weekend.

But the Citizens’ recent poor performance against Wolves in Gameweek 8 might go some way to putting Fantasy managers off for the captaincy, especially considering Palace’s home defensive record.

Meanwhile, Liverpool travel to Old Trafford, a ground at which they have never won in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp.

In all competitions, the former Borussia Dortmund manager has drawn three and lost one at Manchester United’s historic stadium during his time in charge of the Reds.

In total, his side has scored three goals there but on their most recent visit, back in February, the match ended 0-0.

Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear of Liverpool attackers for the captaincy in Gameweek 9

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have been far from special going forward this season, their defence has shown some improvement on last season.

They have two Premier League clean sheets at Old Trafford in 2019/20, against Chelsea and Leicester and have been boasting some relatively impressive defensive underlying statistics.

All of this is likely to leave nagging questions at the back of the mind for Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.7m) owners when it comes to the armband.

Given Manchester United’s shocking attacking displays of late, perhaps Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) might receive more consideration than their midfield colleagues?

Aubameyang and Arsenal are likely to find life tough at Sheffield United next Monday

Even those looking at Arsenal assets such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) may have their concerns about a Monday night trip to Sheffield United.

The Blades have conceded just seven goals this season, only Liverpool have allowed fewer, while Chris Wilder has made all the top-six sides work for their results thus far.

Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw in Gameweek 4, while the only reason Klopp’s men scored at Bramall Lane in Gameweek 7 was because of an uncharacteristic error from Dean Henderson (£4.5m).

For all of those reasons, Gameweek 9 could be see a host of differential options top the upcoming captain poll, which you can now vote in (below).

Wilson will be the favourite Bournemouth option ahead of Norwich’s trip to the Vitality Stadium

Naturally, there will be a lot of consideration for Bournemouth assets in Gameweek 9 as they host a Norwich side that conceded five at home to Aston Villa last time out.

Callum Wilson (£7.9m) is expected to be the favourite of these having registered attacking returns in all but one match so far this season.

Those unable to get the England international into their squads may also look to Josh King (£6.3m), who has double-figure hauls in both of his last two matches at the Vitality Stadium – and remains the Cherries’ penalty taker.

Abraham has been in decent statistical form of late

One of just two of Gameweek 8’s top 20 captains to actually deliver attacking returns was Tammy Abraham (£7.7m), who, with each passing week, looks more and more capable of factoring in the conversation for the armband.

After the first eight matches of the 2019/20 campaign, the Chelsea forward is joint-top of the league for goals scored, alongside Aguero (eight).

Abraham is also top of the league for shots on target, which is probably why his bonus score is also looking quite healthy, a total of 11 to his name thus far – more than any other player.

Ahead of Newcastle’s visit to Stamford Bridge, it would be surprising to see Abraham not considered among the best options, especially given the Magpies’ record on the road this season.

In four away matches in 2019/20, Steve Bruce’s men have conceded 11 times, an average of 2.75 per game.

You can now vote in the latest captain poll on our website, either below or in the sidebar on the right.

Joe and David will be speaking about the debate in the captain video, which you can watch on our YouTube channel from 12:30 pm on Monday.

Thinking Salah and Barnes to Auba and Maddison for 2FT, gives me the following team:

    Pope
    TAA/Otamendi/Mings
    KDB/Sterling/Maddison/Mount
    Auba/Pukki/Abraham(c)

    Button/Cantwell/Rico/Lundstram

Are there better moves to make? Is it worth taking a hit to find the room for a Bournemouth striker?

Don't think salah/mane is worth the -4 as largely the same. Can you do Pukki>Tammy without this? Even so I'd look at moving someone else on like VVD to afford.

        Any advice?

2 Fts, 0.6m ITB, WC available however planning to save for GW13.

        Pope (button)
        TAA, VVD, Soy, Lunds (Montoya)
        Salah, Sterling, Kdb, Mount, (Cantwell)
        Tammy, Pukki (Greenwood)

Thinking of doing Salah + Greewood > Mahrez and Wilson. That way Lunds drops to bench. Only focused on short term 4 gwks as I'll then wildcard.

        Thanks!

Risky to go without any Liverpool asset besides TAA, but I am in the same boat probably.

I think both Maddison and Wilson will do very well over their next run, hence I like the move

Currently on Mahrez rather than Maddison - purely for next 4 gwks and then will reassess on wildcard between vardy and maddison. Does that change your opinion?

Oh, sorry, I misread it mate.

I think Mahrez presents a higher ceiling then Maddison, however it is clearly more risky. Maddison should be an assured starter.

I think the sucess of picking Mahrez for next GWs will depend on Bernardo’s possible ban. If in fact he is banned for some games, Mahrez is an excellent route to that attack.

Otherwise I consider he can get his minutes managed and cameos are more likely

Not a fan of Mahrez pick.

I can salah to maddison and pukki to wilson. but then only 0.4 ITB.

Seems a little sideways? I think I'd remain with salah or no pool attack atm. Thanks though!

        Pope
        TAA, Otamendi, Tomori
        Sterling, KDB, Mount, Son
        Firmino, Pukki, Abraham

        Button, Rico, Lundstram, Cantwell

I am thinking of Son and Bobby to Maddison and Wilson, and go Pukki to Auba in GW10

I actually think Firmino is better based on recent weeks. Also if you can use the term "coverage" it helps negate any mane/salah haul plus firmino has a good track record.
Although same could be said for high ownership of pukki so it's up to you!

I am thinking of doing Son Bobby Pukki to Maddison Auba Wilson over this and next GW.

How would you structure the move?

Son Bobby to Maddison Wilson first? And then Pukki to Auba GW10?

Definitely Bobby to Wilson this week & Pukki to Auba next week, but which week you do Son to Maddison depends on whether you think he starts against Watford.

                Thanks mate! Good advice.

I am not keen on keeping Son due to:
                - Not a guaranteed starter at all vs Watford both due to internationals and CL tuesday
                - Spurs in a really really bad moment. Even if he starts, I feel his minutes may be managed and Spurs looking bad may jeopardize him individually
                - Always a transfer waiting to happen due to their next tough fixtures

With this in mind, however, keeping for Watford is still on the table

              I own son.

Personally, I think it could heavily backfire selling Son this week. I don’t think it’s the week to sell him because if he starts he could get some serious points. Can’t sell Son before Watford IMO.

                Imma lose Son.

It's a stretch to think he'll bang in 3 given Spurs abject form, he's playing 2 international games and he's not travelling back to the UK till Wednesday.....

                Plus Wilson has NOR....

He doesn’t need to bang 3 goals for owners to be happy?

I think Poch really needs a win and what better fixtures than to do it on? He only played 60 mins in his first IB game.

Personally, I think you’ll regret that choice. But good luck either way.

I agree with all you say, don't get me wrong, but I just think it's more a wish than reality to think Poch - not having had any opportunity to train with or talk to the squad for 2 weeks - can turn the Bayern / Brighton debacle around by Sunday.

Then again, it's Watford - anything can happen....

Are you talking about the player or the team? Because team form is not necessarily temporary. Spurs are obviously a decent team but they have overachieved because of lack of investment for ages, there's clearly quite a few problems to be addressed. I prefer to pick on current form and not punt on future form.

I took Son out this week and realise it is a risk being against Watford but I got Madd in plus Vardy for Pukki as part of the move (for free) so I thought it was worth the trade-off when considering Spurs form and Son's international playing and travel time.

Fair enough, I guess I just play the game slightly different to you as I like to punt on form changing which is why I’d look at this as a perfect opportunity for me.
Completely agree there’s issues at Spurs, I’m just hoping that Watford are that bad that even an out of form Spurs side could smash them.

Love the Maddison and Vardy double up. I’m doing Firmino to Vardy myself this week.

Not saying there's anything wrong with punts if the form isn't there but you see something that suggests big points are around the corner, but the signs at Spurs are all bad even if Son is still a great player.

Having said that if it was just a straight swap from Son to Mad this week I would have waited until after Watford game, I just thought it was worth it to free up cash for the upgrade to Vardy with it, especially with him Son being a slight rotation risk.

                            Good luck!

Not sure how you see that tbh. Salah, KDB, TAA plus 3 mid to lower premium range strikers and no fodder in starting lineup. If anything I'd say he must have a pretty good TV.

Haller + Pukki to Abraham + Wilson the best moves here?

          Aguero Pukki Haller

          Button Cantwell Dendoncker Kelly

Thats a decent shout. Was considering CHO over him. I can do:

Pukki, Dendoncker, Haller -> Abraham, CHO, Wilson (-4)

But surely triple Chelsea attack is too much. Could have Tielemans, McGinn or Yarmolenko instead though

I'm also bringing in a 6m midfielder this GW & was only put off CHO by the fact I already have Mount & Abraham: he's a fun punt, but not worth the risk for me.

I'm holding off Tielemans (and Leicester as a whole) until GW14 when I plan to bring in Vardy for Wilson. It's Vardy or Maddison if you're going for Leicester attack imo.

The main reason I think I'm going for Yarmolenko over McGinn is Villa's short-term fixtures, playing City & Liverpool in GWs that I don't particularly want to start Cantwell.

Mendy injured though. May keep for one more week. Abraham + Wilson's fixtures this GW are hard to ignore. I really dont know though and I feel Pukki/Haller could punish me, especially Haller (NEW) and Pukki (MNU).

I would do Vardy and Abraham instead considering your money ITB. I would also consider your original moves, plus Son to Salah/Mane if you can afford?

I can only do Son to Salah/Mane if I have Wilson + Abraham. And with Bournemouths next 5 fixtures I'm very happy to do that

I think that's a -4 worth doing. Because Spurs seem to be in crisis mode, which means any points scoring with them lacks certainty.
