No room for the heart when playing FPL

Some Fantasy Premier League selections are made based on form, some on fixtures, some on a gut feeling and some come from the heart.

This season I am learning that the heart should not be trusted where FPL is concerned.

This is something that I have always known and I have tried historically to base my choices on tangible evidence but this season one man crept in.

This was, in part, due to the price reduction he had at the start of the season but also due to a need for a talisman, someone I really trusted alongside my maverick John Lundstram (£5.1m), John McGinn (£5.8m), Dean Henderson (£4.7m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m) picks.

Harry Kane (£10.9m), should have been the perfect striker – playing in a team who made it all the way to the Champions League final and at the low price point of just £11.0m at the time.

However, Spurs have been far from their best this season and Kane far from his, playing more as a defensive midfielder under Mauricio Pochetino than a striker.

Fast forward to Gameweek 14, Kane nearly left my team but the arrival of Jose Mourinho changed things. Would Spurs improve? Would Kane play as an out and out striker again?

Would the Fantasy hauls return?

Suddenly it was the wrong time to get rid, especially as he had a price rise with other managers bringing him in.

However, my gut feeling (which should always be followed) was to switch him for Dele Alli (£8.6m) who I spoke at length about on every FPL show and podcast that week.

Nonetheless, I held Kane who failed to return when Dele did. This has been repeated in both Gameweeks 14 and 15.

The stay of execution is over, this week Kane will go.

Having watched Kane against Manchester United revert back to playing deeper when Spurs fell behind, whilst Dele was in and around the box making all the right runs, it was apparent which Spurs asset is the one to own and it’s the one playing as the number 10 not the meant to be playing as the number 9.

Having two transfers going into Gameweek 16 means that I am able to make a change in my strike force and midfield without taking a points hit. McGinn is the unfortunate casualty in order for me to bring in Dele.

Whilst the Aston Villa man was fantastic in the early Gameweeks of the season the points have dried up of late and with a Kane downgrade up-top, I have plenty of budget to afford the upgrade to Dele. This leaves me with £8.2m for a third striker alongside Vardy and Abraham.

There are a few decent options in this price bracket.

Raúl Jimenez (£7.7m), Danny Ings (£6.2m) and Lys Mousset (£5.1m) are the three in contention for the spot.

Having used the Members Area to compare the players the results are interesting.

That's fine if you want Tammy back, just glad i kept Tammy to give a front three of those two with Vardy, Jimi can go for Rashford soon though maybe, just feel he could do well over these next three.

Id be tempted to pick Son as captain, but a lot of talk of him playing more defensively? Can we still expect him to be the good old attacking Son we all know and love despite this?

He's playing as more of a winger while he was more of a striker under Poch...so his creativity has increased but goal threat looks a bit down. Alli has made up for the goal threat.

I've captained him a few times before transferring out last week. Have you watched him play and how deep he sits. Alli and Som always further up the pitch and more involved. Kane was so frustrating to own and watch. Possibly worse now under Mou

This ; Kane constantly comes deep to draw the defenders receive the ball and free Son, Alli and even Sissoko to run through.

wouldn't be surprised. Last time he played 90mins in the league was GW8.

I'd certainly say so, looks good! Ballsy captain pick, i like it.

Thoughts on mine below bud? 🙂

I just feel like there’s no reason to not captain Vardy at this point. Salah could frustrate imo!

Villa have been defensively solid at Villa Park this season; have a look at Guilbert’s home record. For the upside it’s a risk I’m willing to take

Now you’re tempting me to switch to Mane/Son!

Which one do you think out of Son or Mane?

Relatively easy fixtures but only 7 goals conceded including 2 against Liverpool.

Yes for Alli. If you have a soft spot for Sterling then downgrade KDB but I’d personally ditch Sterling.

I've ditched Sterling so you don't have to ; he will now be free as a bird.

    Hi all

Who to play out of Henderson and Gazzaniga?

I’ll be playing three at the back with TAA, Aurier & Lundstram (Söyüncü & Rico bench).

The question is basically double Tottenham or double Sheffield defence?

    Thanks!

All set and GTG? Shame i have to bench certain players, but don't think i'd benefit from a BB, that was last week and the chance went by.

    Cheers gents.

Looks good mate, only thing I would switch is Soyuncu in for Tomori. Surely the Toffees won’t blank again at Goodison especially with the bounce from Big Dunc in the dugout! Good luck

Cheers Irbox, yeah i actually typed that wrong, have soy starting and Tomori benched haha. Yeah Big Dunc will surely expect a goal from them. Cheers mate! You too.

Bringing in one of Son or Alli. I can afford either, I like Son as an FPL option, but Alli is on fire again. Alli?

Whoever you bring in, you can’t judge it on just one game. Alli is cheaper and very central to attacking play so I’d go with him. That’s not to say that son isn’t a solid pick
