How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the â€˜Leagues’ tab and clicking â€˜Join+’.

So many people going big at the back, again it's not a bad tactic in and of itself but just really think whether it's the right tactic for you as an fpl manager, requires a lot of nerve and patience

It’s good a point - I think for me it suits me, always favoured a long slow process with consistency when it comes to progressing at games/life

Then it sounds like it will pay off, but from what I tend to see on here most people aren't the patient type so it's spelling disaster

I think my biggest issue with it is wasting 0.5 on a non-playing forward. Yes Doherty is better than all the 6.0-forwards, but then I have to have Davis or someone. I don’t like it.

How often do you go three deep on the bench? I think a 4.5 playing mid and hopefully 4.0 playing def will suffice

In that case I can have two 4.0 defs, which is what I am going with right now.

I think it’s more to do with the fact that 6-7 defenders like Doh, VVD and Robbo are more likely to get higher returns than their forward or mid counterparts in the same range.

but going cheap on defence means you don’t have to pick mids in that price bracket

The jump in value from 4.5->6.0 defenders tends to be much bigger than adding 1.5m elsewhere on the field

Yup on this one myself, the only thing close to a punt in my team is Werner. Staying flexible so I don't waste my wildcard early, not opposed to taking one or two hits

A lot of variables to consider, such as how patient you are as a manager plus finer details, such as the returns of Alisson, Laporte and Boly

One thing I will say is that there are so many painful, cheap bandwagons that waste transfers and hits across the season. They score big and/or they score a couple of times and it's all aboard only to then be disappointed. We know it's worth it to be patient with the likes of Doherty and Pool defence, but if someone like Yarmolenko scores two and then manu scrambles to get him in...

That's exactly what I mean, do people have the patience to not get in a pukki or a yarmalenko

I think to be successful at this game you have to be patient in a spine. What that spine consists will be different from season to season.

I'm currently on treble Pool and Doherty as I'm only sacrificing a Son/Ziyech type of figure in return. I only have one cheapie to tolerate (Mitrovic atm) and I'm not burdened with Soucek/Armstrong/ASM. Don't get me wrong, I like them as picks, but have more than one when I doubt I'll be patient with those types of players is why this strategy works for me. At least to begin with

              Depends on rotation I guess.
I like KWP, Saliba (if nailed), Lamptey.
Lascalles & Ayling too when their fixtures are better.

Nice team just a couple of things for you to think 🙂

              1. In the first four, how many CS do you think Spurs keep. For me, only NEW. So is Bavies worth it?
2.Prefer Doh to Mitro for same price
              3. Is Armstrong nailed?
              4. Do you have anything in the bank? If not then I’d downgrade to save at least 0.5.

                1. It’s a Mourinho team so at least 2 in that first 4. He’s a long term pick aswell I expect around 5/6 in the first 8.
                2. Not the worst shout but I’ll back Mitro to begin with
                3. I think so but if there are any doubts i think I’ll get Keita instead
                4. Nothing needed itb because I have my United man already and will do Auba > City in GW3 and have a FT spare so I’m happy exhausting the budget x

Yeah good call. Saliba is a place holder depending on who ends up signing who, feels like all the 4.5s are at risk of being replaced.

Exact same structure as I have with the one exception that I'm not gonna force myself to do Son > Fernandes. I'm just gonna start with Fernandes and play Soucek in GW1.

Interesting option that, save a transfer and protect against the inevitable fernandes price rise.

Prefer your option, I can’t bench that amount of money especially at the start. I’d rather son to Fernandes but sons first 8 fixtures are too good to turn down. I’d rather find a 4.5 mid to replace Soucek and use the 2mill for ASM to greenwood

Same team. Except I’ve gone Adams and Soucek over Armstrong and Davis.

              And KWP over Bavies.

              Like it

Have something fairly close to this as stand by team. I've put Son into attack though with the idea of moving Mitro money back into defence when defensive fixtures improve or a bolter appears in midfield

Think generally there are more good high midrange options in attack and the money is better there than in the middle. ie one of Jim or Ings

Seeing a lot of Nyland in teams. But going by David's FFS article, Steer looks the better option.

            https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2020/08/22/the-best-budget-fpl-goalkeepers-for-2020-21/

"While Nyland played more Premier League minutes than any other currently priced £4.0m goalkeeper in 2019/20 (537), he did not exactly impress during Project Restart."

"... when Heaton was first injured, Steer was the man Smith turned to instead of Nyland after he helped Villa to an impressive run of wins and clean sheets en route to the Championship play-off final in 2018/19. The only reason Steer did not feature more often last season was because he himself got injured eight minutes into deputising for Heaton and missed the rest of the campaign. Mostly recovered from that knock now, Steer could be one to consider as bench fodder in the event he features in some pre-season outings."

More likely I'd say. I owned Greenwood and Button last season. Greenwood dropped to 4.3m. Button down to 3.9m.

Nyland especially I think can get price drops because some people will try to be extra skimpy at the back and pick Nyland and 4.0m and when they find out Nyland doesn't play, they'll get rid for someone at 4.5m.

Same problem as what happened with Greenwood. Some people thought he'd play and when he didn't (at the start of the season), he dropped like a stone. I sold him at a loss.

The theory is that if more people own them then more people will sell them (once a better cheap gk appears once the season starts) leading to a higher chance of a drop. This has certainly happened in the past, although it didn’t seem much of a thing last season.

I seem to be out here but my memory of last season was prices of low owned players fluctuated more - maybe as it took very few transfers to hit the trigger.

Was it Guendozi who ended up absurdly cheap despite never being owned significantly?

I wouldn't bother. Joined FFHub a couple of weeks ago for first time (member here too). While their player comparison is pretty cool (same data but layout is very good), in terms of content its no better than here and their slack is really quiet and hardly any discussion.

Rashford was in poor form towards end of season so I’d just pay extra for bruno, or get son and get martial for United cover

He got the exact same amount of goals and assists for Manchester United in the second part of his season as he did for Sporting in the first so his form since February doesn't look to be a blip. I actually had him down at 11.5m before the prices were released so perhaps the FPL reckon he over performed in that time. Personally, I don't think he'll quite match those returns but 10.5m for someone who very possibly will have a goal involvement of over 30 is hard to ignore.

He got 8 goals & 16 assists in 42 appearances last season when West Brom were a big fish in a small pond. Now they're amongst the sharks I'd divide those returns by 3.

It seems to be the same start of the season dilemmas to me... loads of options and can’t have them all.

It’s a balance between patience, with the ones you pick, fomoing on to the performing premium assets and luck if you choose the right ones

I had 3 top 7k finishes before last year because I got that right/luck. Last season I chose the wrong premiums at the wrong times, made some poor decisions to rectify and got left behind eventually finishing 40k

How long do you wait if you have Martial but no Bruno and he’s smashing it.

Don’t wish injury on any player but over the years premium players getting injured makes the game a whole lot easier.

Which Villa are going to turn up this season?

Looking at fixtures I’m not sure how to read Villa. They were truly dire for most of last season but pretty stout towards the end. No major outlays and player turnover could mean they turn into a less attractive prospect for attacking sides.

I actually would quite like Rashford + Fernandes as early as possible.

I think MUN have some of the best value attackers in the game. Remember the last time they gave a proven 200 point player a 9.5m price tag? All 4 of the MUN players seem underpriced compared to the value they offered at the end of last season. Greenwood can do serious damage if he gets a run of games, and Martial as well is primed to have a really big 20+ goal season.

Martial is going to have a world class season this year. His form after Fernandes has arrived and during the restart has given us a fantastic preview for this season. Less convinced on the other options and I doubt I'll be jumping on them early with a schedule of Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle from GW4-8 but after that anything can happen.

Agree with you about Martial to the extent that I think he's a cracking e/w bet at 20/1 for the Golden Boot.

Yeah, they would certainly be a big help but even so he still managed to score 9 goals in the last third of the season. If he could sustain that he'd certainly be in the mix.

Other than wishful thinking, what evidence is there that Ferguson will be this season’s AWB/Lundstram? We aren’t owed a 4.0 starting defender, it doesn’t happen every season and while preseason will obviously tell us more, there isn’t much evidence to suggest he is nailed for a starting spot.

Idk but he’s in mine, but given he’s 4.0 it doesn’t matter anyway he’s only going to be benched in fpl, it’s just handy if he olays
