How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the â€˜Leagues’ tab and clicking â€˜Join+’.

      Somewhere between I suppose

I don’t see the logic of nailing anyone down as a placeholder because they could hit good form themselves

      Hey mate.
      Can say B.
City have wolves in GW 2 so no need to rush. Cam bring KDB for Auba in GW 3 and he's only one I'm interested.
Re United, Werner is placeholder for Martial. Not going after Bruno.
Have Shaw (If fit) on the bench.

I am planning to wildcard early this season but hopefully not until gameweek 4-6 when transfer window is done and we have a bit more info about team form and starting 11's. Auba and Son are placeholders for City and united boys at the moment with Vardy there if I want to get up to Aguero or get Werner.

      Neither (and both?)

Building a team for first 8 GWs

Have 2/3 spots in the team earmarked for Manc assets but open minded to keeping the "placeholders" if they start well

Also open-minded to no Manc at all

    Thoughts?

    McCarthy/4.0
    TAA, Doh, Aurier, Justin, 4.0
    Auba, Salah, Armstrong, Soucek, 4.5
    Martial, Mitro, Vardy

    GW1 4-4-2
    GW2 3-4-3
GW3 Auba to KDB/Sterling, Vardy to Timo/Jimmy (maybe)

    Any advise?

Ritchie may be moving to Bournemouth.
Newcastle have offered them Ritchie and Gayle plus cash in exchange for Callum Wilson.
Since the takeover bid fell through, they need to sell some players in order to buy others.

Is robbo set to be rotated this year ? If he has a good start with attacking returns then he’s a brilliant differential

I think so, you saw that TAA got rotated a bit last season so I would expect they’ll do the same to Robertson. I would imagine they will rest Robertson after CL games or play the lesser teams which means he won’t be a fantastic pick this season

      1. Greasy Grealish Gang
        • 5 Years

Both Trent and Ribbon will play most matches but this year both will slightly rotate more with Neco Williams showing great potential and the signing of Kostas Tsimikas. I'm personally opting for Trent right now.

Won't say set to be rotated. But will be taken off early in some games with a good lb signed by pool

Yeah I think rotated is a bit strong can’t see klopp deviating to much from his best side in the PL

Not rotated but will not play all the games. Over Xmas and busy periods he will definitely sit out a few but undoubted first choice still.

Part of me is tempted to go for him over TAA as he did finish the season very well and takes a few corners now.

TAA will do better in long run but can always correct that and double up on wildcard.

Think the double up will still be a good strategy this season. I expect more clean sheets this time round as hopefully we won't have to rely on that clown Adrian in goal and Lovren is out of the picture as well.

I'll be looking at Robbo, Trent and maybe Doc when I wildcard but I'm not a fan of the early fixtures for doubling up and Vinagre seems a lovely cheap wolves asset to start with.

Expecting some rotation but not until Xmas

    So, here we go again

    McCarthy
    TAA Vinagre Doc
    Hendo Salah Auba Saint-Maximim
    Werner Mitro Vardy

    (Button FergusonTaylor)

    wk 2 Auba. Bruno/KDB/Sterling

Biggest weakness obv Hendo. But a differential none the less.

        Midfield is quite given:

I had a similar draft to this but moved away from benching Greenwood gameweek 1.

Was convinced that its just better to start with Son/ Puli/ziyech or someone and then make the move down to Greenwood if I fancy it. I really don't get the Soucek love but i guess if he will just start gameweek 1 for you its not too bad. He's decent bench fodder going forwards.

On fpl I constantly achieve a rank of around 10k however I can’t break past this point. Does anybody have any tips or ways to play the game to improve upon this. I’m thinking about possibly trying to price point more this season than I have done before to see if this works. Any help would be much appreciated!

    Timo Werner's headed goals:

    11/12: 1
    12/13: 1
    13/14: 1
    14/15: 1
    15/16: 4
    16/17: 4
    17/18: 1
    18/19: 1
    19/20: 0

Since restart, 36% of all Chelsea's goal attempts from their strikers were headers. If Werner does play through the centre, then Chelsea will need to change how they create chances for the him. He could of course play wide with Pulisic out...

I think he'll play out wide with Puli out and Giroud up top

With a more mobile striker they may put in less crosses, or try deliver a different type of cross l, Liverpool play constant crosses into salah and mane and they score alot

I actually think that Pulisic will benefit most from Ziyech being on the opposite flank, he may well pick up a few far post opportunities.

Good call this. At Ajax Ziyech kept feeding Promes with back post tap ins. Promes just knew when to run, Ziyech deliverd them on a plate. Did it versus Chelsea too. But that said i don't think Werner needs to score loads of headers, Ajax never did with Tadic leading the line.

But with Ziyech, Pulisic and Havrertz they won't be playing the same style going forward.

      Kepa
      Azpi Rudiger Zouma Chilwell
      Kovacic Havertz Kante
      Ziyech Werner Pulisic

A GK and a CB and Chelsea will have a title challenging first XI.

Werner doesn't look like a person who scores headers.

He finds it difficult to break down teams as well.

From what I've seen, he scores with movement in between defenders.

Has decent accuracy (better than the Giroud/Tammy) which results in more goals

I'm not sure that's his game. From what I've seen and heard, he's someone that likes to run in behind defences, not drop deep support the play, though his chance creation is decent.

That would make Ziyech appealing if he did...

I think the main reason for more crosses (and also being slightly more direct from the back) was that we were starting with Giroud and playing to his strengths. There were plenty of low crosses that skipped through the 6 yard box with no one gambling throughout the season. This is where I think Werner will capitalise.

He looked rusty at first (I had him) but by the end was in form.

It's part of the player he is that for periods he's not involved. He's explosive, in that sense.

Wouldn't say he ended out of form at all (United fan)

I thought this at first, then when you minus the penalties and look at his form since Bruno came/the restart which will be the first 11 then he's not a great of an option as he first seems

Currently on this draft. (1.5 ITB).

Kane to Martial in GW2, then Son to KDB or Sterling GW3.

Will then review GW 4/with a view to a possible WC to a more defence-heavy set up incl double Pool defence & Doherty.

      McCarthy
      TAA - Vinagre - Saliba
      Salah - Auba - Son - ASM - Soucek
      Kane - Mitro

I've tweaked my draft again to give me great flexibility over my roadmap. I've gone for Kane, Son and Auba in my GW1 squad, all of them up for being shipped out from GW3. That way Bruno, Martial, KDB can come in at a time depending on how they perform in GWs 2-3 (Greenwood is already in my squad and 1m is in the bank for price rises).

1m itb. 0.5 for the GW3 2FT I currently have in mind and 0.5 for price rises. So, yeah.

I might add Kane is in for Werner. No Chelski now.

Don't see any rush for Werner given week 2 fixture - plenty of good options up top in week 1

Liverpool double up is on the mind and as TAA is fixed in whonis the better option? Yes robbo gets the asissts and looked great after the restart but virgil got a few goals and at the end of last season there wasn't much init between the two of them.

      Thoughts please?

without injury, could be 2 players you keep for a very long period.

Robertson, because his returns are more gradual. Which helps with patience keeping him.

VVD scores more, but you have to wait longer for the investment to pay off. So more likely to cash in on him, then miss the points.

But if you're a more patient manager than me, and plan to keep VVD long term - and confident you can resist the temptation to sell him if he doesn't reward you straight away - then VVD is also an excellent pick.

People maintaining bad memories despite Everton being on the beach with no midfield. Wasn't long before the restart that he was scoring against United, Arsenal and being called Calvert-Lewandowski. The latter scenario is a lot more likely, especially if Everton sign players like Dalot and Allan. I severely doubt I'll be going with him GW1 but he's an option to consider for sure, and one to jump on early, especially looking at the fixtures.

Hey guys, do you think a 4.5 defender scores more than a 5.5 mid? Racking my brain over either going with

      A. Doherty + Bruno + 5.5 mid
      B. 4.5 def + Rashford + Ziyech

My thinking is that Bruno and Doherty likely score the same as Rashfors and Ziyech, so it comes down more so to the 4.5 def vs 5.5 mid. Any thoughts? Cheers!

Realistically, the best £4.5 defs are going to get you 75-85 points, unless you get exceptionally lucky and another Sheffield United emerges.

The best £5.5m mids should get you 90-115 points, again, unless you get exceptionally lucky and another Lord Lundstram emerges.

The key difference to me is what that difference in price can do to the key positions in your team.

Personally, I think a £5.5 to £6m defender will comfortably out score a £5.5-£6m mid, so I’d rather pump that money in someone like Doherty than a similar priced mid and a £4.5 def.

4.5 defs are fillers, playing the fixtures. You don't consider them for long term.

I’m thinking more of people that fill defence with them so they can pack MF. I have £4.5s but I think the prem defs offer you as good value as premium mids.
