Captain Sensible

Who are the best captain options for FPL Gameweek 2?

Jan Sienkiewicz was the king of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy in 2019/20, scoring a whopping 657 points from the armband, the second-highest in the whole world. We asked him to help out with the captaincy debate ahead of the Gameweek 2 deadline.

The Fantasy Premier League community has been relatively unanimous in picking their captain for Gameweek 2 – but have they chosen wisely?

That’s what the Captain Sensible article is here to find out, with an in-depth analysis of the key form options, as well as the defences of their upcoming opponents.

Captain Poll

For the second week running, Arsenal’s premium midfielder Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) leads the Fantasy Football Scout captain poll. The former Borussia Dortmund man has once again received more than a half of total votes and looks to be trusted by the vast majority of his owners for his Gameweek 2 match against West Ham (home).

Only Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) has scored more goals than Aubameyang since the start of the 2019/2020 season and the Gunners’ captain will be looking to celebrate signing a new contract at the club by improving his impressive tally against the leaky Hammers’ defence.

Despite not featuring in Gameweek 1, Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) is attracting some attention for the armband. The “Portuguese Magnifico” sits second in our captain poll with 11.7% of votes. Manchester United’s talisman has been in scintillating form since moving to the Premier League in January, providing eight goals and eight assists in that time. In fact, since Fernandes’ arrival, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men have gained more points (32) than any other team in the division, which highlights the midfielder’s positive impact.

The remaining players have all gained less than 5% of votes, with the likes of in-form Mohammed Salah (£12.5m) and new Everton star James Rodriguez (£7.5m) all failing to attract many Fantasy managers for the armband. In this article, we will look at how good of a captaincy option Aubamyang actually is, as well as try to spot some overlooked assets.

KEY MATCHES

Arsenal v West Ham

using-the-top-10000-ownership-to-increase-your-fpl-rank-andys-article 9

Gameweek 2 pits two clubs together who could not be further apart in terms of outlook right now. In a week where Arsenal won 3-0 at Fulham and tied club captain Aubameyang to a new contract, they host a West Ham that got off to the worst possible start to 2020/21.

The Hammers were substandard to say the least in their 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle, a particularly ominous development before travelling to the Emirates Stadium. If David Moyes’ men were dominated by the Magpies, how much more damage could Arsenal do?

      I’ve done Kane > Martial
I think Kane could easily return on in GW2 and more but it was more to have the money and strengthen my squad as well as get a Utd striker

I’m trying to think of some basic metrics for performance (to help me decide when to wildcard, make drastic changes etc.) What would you say is a healthy average above the average score? For example average score was 50 last week and I scored 65. If I’m 15 points above the average 3 weeks in a row would that require major changes or now?!

Try to target fixtures or if obvious value players arrive

Or if you feel the majority may be overvaluing / undervaluing players.

It really needs to be more forward looking than that, I'd say - which I realise is kind-of hard!

I'd say something more like write yourself a list of say the top 5 players who you think will do really well over the next few (6?) weeks based on form/fixtures/data/RMT as you prefer, figure out how many of them you don't have and add to that the number of injured or non-playing players you have. If the total is above 5 you probably have some fires you need to fight.

If it's over 10 then panic.

Willian's fixtures turn horrible very soon and I would be still a bit worried about nailedness. Greenwood still has the possibility of a transfer replacement (Sancho) looming over him but looks good at the moment.

My vote would probably be Rodriguez. Passed the eye test last time, might have pens and has the best fixtures.

Just a few of my thoughts for what they are worth.

    - Not many people will want to spend a transfer on a defender in GW2, but the timing for Everton defence looks ideal. 2 CS's out of their next 3 looks achievable. WBA, cpl, BRI. Michael Keane is nailed and has decent goal threat from set-pieces: @5mil, he looks a great option. Even a switch from Ramsdale or McCarthy to Pickford could prove rewarding. The wait and see approach with Everton might see you miss their purple patch of fixtures.

    - Jimenez will prove good value again this season at 8.5. With no Europa to worry about, I can see him breaking the 200pt mark for the season. He is at a potentially awkward price point with many managers going with a forward structure of premium (Werner) and budget (Mitro, Wilson, etc.) Has great fixtures and even the Man City fixture isn't necessarily too bad for him. Is not fitting him into our teams a huge oversight?

    - Many people will look to sell Son this week. But Southampton played a very high line vs. Crystal Palace. If they do this again, I can see it playing right into Son's hands. Spurs looked most dangerous when countering e.g. from Everton's corners when Son and co. have space to run into. I can see the speedy South Korean having success against the Saints in this way. With Redmond and Armstrong injured and Hojberg sold, Southampton look less appealing, both in real life and in fpl terms, than their end of season form suggested.

    - If looking for differentials, I think two 7mil midfielders have very good potential for points this week. Jack Grealish looked sharp in his Carabao Cup run-out. Sheffield Utd looked far from their solid best vs an admittedly impressive Wolves side last time. GW1 proved a timely reminder about the importance of set-piece and penalty takers and Grealish has talisman status at Villa. The other is Harvey Barnes, who posted promising stats and was unlucky not to get in on the points last week. He played the full 90 which was encouraging. He hosts a Burnley side who are often slow starters and who I personally think might struggle this season.

I started with Barnes so I guess I'd prefer him. My initial plan was Barnes for the first two and then possibly upgrade to Chelsea mid for GW3. Barnes has a poor fixture GW3. So I guess Grealish might prove better long term.

Barnes has really gone under the radar, especially with his fixtures. The only player in that price range who has the potential to explode like he did against Villa in March imo.

Yes, he seems like he has the potential of a haul in him. Maddison potentially back should help the Leicester attack also.

      Jimenez
      19/20 - 194 Points - 17G 7A
      18/19 - 181 Points - 13G 10A

Could definitely hit 200 points this year if Wolves improve even further with the loss of EL and added creativity of Podence and Vitinha. Makes me want a front three of him, Martial and Werner from GW2-38...

That front 3 would be ideal. Problem with such a good forward line is that it diminishes the budget for midfield, which is traditionally where most of the biggest hitters are.

          Just dreamed up this

          McCarthy
          TAA - Saiss - Keane/Davies - Ayling (KWP)
          Auba - KDB - Podence
          Martial - Werner - Jimenez

Decent though it misses out on that around 7.5M-8.5M midfield bracket, seems interesting

Thanks for the thoughts, some really good points.
      - Everton and Digne I would be going for if not for other priorities
      - Jimenez was in for GW1 and will stay for the good fixtures
      - Son has great fixtures and Spurs have the potential to pull it together, even though start was poor. In the short term Bale will be a big boost to team spirits and I think I'll take the price drop knocks in the hope for some great returns.
      - Quite a few 7.5m and below midfielders caught the eye last week. Barnes, Zaha, Hamez and Podence come to mind and lots of mid-priced midfielders yet to play. Might end up with Salah as premium mid, Werner/Martial to accompany Jimenez and a selection of the best mid priced available once we see what happens GW2 and GW3

If you're patient he should be good value. This place will knee jerk him out after one benching though, that's the issue.

        B, Podence + AWB

This early it’s hard to predict. Normally fplstats has the algorithm down after a few gws

I trust stats but nothing is 'reliable' this time of year. Takes them a bit to figure it out before it's close to perfect.

Yeah, but he's keeping son. If he keeps him, he'll drop in value in his team. In order to buy him back cheaper he'd have to sell him now and buy later.

Ok. Again, I think it was pretty clear what he meant by it but maybe that’s just me. If your on wildcard you have unlimited transfers. Remove him tonight for another player of same value and put him back in for .1 cheaper before deadline in the morning. He hardly wanted him to drop while he was in his team.

I mean, sure. I'm not a mind reader I can only comment on what the OP says. He's keeping on his WC and hopes he drops, no word on selling, so just going off what I see is all.

They're definitely in the comparison tool - just compare the player with himself - or anyone else - and you can see a number of different heat maps in the comparison. Presumably in the player stats bit as well.

First of all, don't laugh at me, we all make mistakes. Now, who would you get for Pulisic and Jota? I'm quite set on Rashford and that leaves me with 5.5m for replacement. If West Ham's fixtures wouldn't be so bad I would get Soucek without doubt, but not sure now. Podence looks good too, but Soucek leaves me with 0.5m to upgrade Mitro or Adams to Wilson or Wood. Thoughts?

Like the soucek pick as it allows for mitro/adams upgrade

Have you thought about greenwood? I think he matches rashford's points for 2m less

Yes. Don't think he'll be dropped either when Reguilon is ready, think Spurs will shift to wing backs, Davies LCB.

On WC. Anyone see the merits of B for next 4-5 weeks?
    A) longterm type
    B) targeting fixtures and move back Liverpool in 4-5 weeks .

    A)
    Mesilier
    Digne, Taa, Ayling, Saiss (Mitchell)
    Rashford, Auba, Sterling, Hamez, (Biss)
    Wilson, Jimi (Brewster)

    Week 3: Auba to Salah

    B) Mesilier
    Coleman, Ayling, Shaw, (Saiss, Mitchell)
    Rashford, Willian, Sterling, Hamez,
    Martial, Werner, Lacazette

Week 3 : Lacazette to Jimi, Saiss comes into the 11.

Most likely to go with A. The short term gain of B could easily be lost after next few weeks anyway

A also gives the option to get Werner (c) in week 3 for Auba + Wilson.

A but careful with Auba drop or Salah rise.

Also Lpool want Sarr - I guess they want one or the other. Obviously they will be bench players but it might mean slightly more rotation than we are used to at Klopp's Liverpool
