Meet the FPL Manager – Graeme Sumner (Gregor)

Meet the Manager is back, as Joe once again catches up with a Fantasy Premier League manager with an outstanding track record of success.

This time Joe meets Graeme Sumner, who is known by many in the Fantasy Football Scout community as Gregor.

With six top 10,000 finishes, including three within the top 1,000, Graeme is no stranger to ending a season strongly.

He also has experience of being within a whisker of winning FPL, after ending 2016/17 in 29th spot.

During this latest Meet the Manager chat, Graeme reveals his strategies for success. This includes being aggressive in pursuit of a good captaincy option, especially low-owned assets. With hat-trick heroes Santi Cazorla and Yaya Toure among his most successful captaincies in the past, Joe is obviously keen to find out who Graeme plans to hand the armband to in the coming weeks.

Joe discovers the importance of the eye test for Graeme, as well as his tactics for avoiding the growing ‘noise’ on social media and elsewhere as millions more join FPL each year.

Finally, Graeme reveals his Gameweek 5 plans, with more low-owned gems in his thought as he targets another strong finish in his already stellar career.

This chat is available as a video and podcast below. The previous Meet the Manager videos can be found here.

Risk playing Reece James (SOT) this GW? Got away without a bench cameo last GW but may not get so lucky next week. Who to bench out of these three?

    A) James (SOT)
    B) Justin (AVL)
    C) Saiss (lee)

Could bench Justin for James but I think both are likely to concede.

I don't see why James would play. They kept a CS for the first time in PL this season and gave away no chances vs Palace with Azpilicueta. Also James is with the England squad while Azpi is not with Spain.

It's Lampard so you never know (as I don't think he knows what he is doing most of the time) but I can't see him changing the defence for the next match.

So play James and risk the bench points or just bench/transfer James?

Chelsea do play Sevilla in the CL 3 days after the Saints game, in which I imagine Frank would favour Azpi to start. Could mean James gets the nod for the PL game.

Great point. Although I've got Saiss & Mitchell (already have Guaita) on the bench & wasn't going to sell James just yet - I'd forgotten we have UCL.

United the weekend after, and Azpi may get the nod for that one too.

          We'll see, things are unpredictable.

Agreed. Until there is any sort of order regarding the defensive stability of teams so long as you have enough starters you have as good a chance of points as any.

Then you just get Antonio since you plan to keep him later, you may have other issues until then. Plus for the strikers fixtures dont matter that much, Jimenez just blanked vs Ful at home and Antonio scored vs Lei away

I'm wildcarding and I'm thinking of just getting in Antonio now, rather than booking in the transfer for later

Form seems to be trumping fixtures at the moment and Antonio has proven he can score against big teams, so there's nothing to say he wont score 1 or 2 goals over the next 3 games, and then you can spend that transfer elsewhere when you need it

Honestly not sure how to answer. There is more than one way to go.

I think Salah + one of Kane/ Son is essential. Attacking defs essential as CSs are not guaranteed. One/ both of Rodríguez and Grealish. The rest depends on preference!

Genuinely considering Havertz for the armband this week.

I'm on the verge of making Havertz my most captained player lol. Did it in GW3 to a 5 pointer which was at least better than KdB 2, Son 0 and Werner 2 while matching Salah's 5.

Why would you do it to yourself mate? He hasn’t shown any evidence to warrant it imo other than what he “should be capable of”

Well... He got a hat-trick at Barnsley and also got two assists for the National Team two days ago. He's coming into his own.

Because I have Son it will almost certainly be on him but if I didn't have Son, I think I give it to Havertz. I have some FanTeam squads without Son so I think Havertz will get the armband in those...

I'm gonna captain Son most likely.

But in some FanTeam drafts, I don't have Son and it looks like it's between Sterling and Havertz. Sterling is out for England so we don't know if it's an 'international' injury or if he's actually out.

        For captaincy, yeah actually...

KdB is second but Arsenal are much better tactically since Arteta signed. And they will be better equipped vs City because of Arteta's knowledge of Guardiola and his style.

Salah vs Everton is really unappealing. That fixture and Everton's form and defensive stats are really not looking like haul material for Salah. He didn't do a whole lot against Villa. Was uncharacteristically clinical with 2 goals from 0.55 xG.

I think Havertz has a higher chance of getting an 18 pointer vs Southampton than either KdB or Salah.

        1. Goonsquad245
          • 8 Years

Cool, this game is all about opinions. I would certainly back KDB to outscore Havertz in their respective fixtures. Arsenal’s defence is way, way worse than everyone thinks it is, this new perception of solidity seems to have been brought about from a few good results against the top teams. I watched all of them, and we could and probably should have got a hiding in every one.

‘Uncharacteristically clinical’ seems to suggest you think Salah is a poor finisher. That’s a misconception that will and has proven costly to a lot of people. What more does he have to do to prove he’s the best asset in the game? Everton is a poor fixture I agree, but in my view Salah is that much better as an asset than Havertz that it doesn’t matter.

Second top scorer last season, top scorer the season before, top scorer the season before that.

Being the best asset in the game is not the same as scoring the most points in a single given season I’m afraid, because of a little thing called variance. If we believe that, then we should also believe Bruno Fernandes is the best asset in the game because he top scored over 15 gameweeks.

He couldn't cope with variance over 38 gameweeks? 😀 KDB managed it even though he played lesser minutes.

    On WC:

    A) 3-4-3/ 4-4-2
    Martinez, Forster
    Chilwell, ROBBO, SEMEDO, DALLAS, Mitchell
    Salah, Son, Rodriguez, GREALISH, BISSOUMA
    Kane, DCL, MAUPAY

    B) 3-5-2/ 3-4-3
    Martinez, Forster
    Chilwell, KWP, SAISS, COOPER, Mitchell
    Salah, Son, Rodriguez, KDB, SOUCEK
    Kane, DCL, BREWSTER

Currently on A but is the weaker defence and Brewster in B worth it to get in KDB now alongside the Kane/ Son double up?

          Maupay + Rodriguez > Watkins + Pulisic

          That seems good to me.

Get your team a bite that others won't have. Risky of course, but you weigh it up. The benefit is that you get a Chelsea sword and potentially get ahead of the curve.

            That could work...

Only thing is Rodriguez is looking awesome at the moment. All the good movement and chances flowing through him. Only downside is this week if he’s back late etc but that shouldn’t prevent getting him on WC.

Do you reckon Pulisic comes back all guns blazing from the start? I’m not totally convinced!

      I like A it's more balanced.

You have to leave out one of KDB, Son, Kane or Pool def do have a good structure.

What do you think of this 352 with a cheap defence?

Like the midfield. Why not Kane to say Jimi. Gives you money to get a start Defender like Chilwell or Robbo. Mitchell and kilman will soon lose their place in the XI.

But it's not easy... You're almost never going to have that luxury with your transfers. You're locking him in now that you're on WC.

Your call, but the stats and eye test favor Robbo this year. That 0.5m is useful.

No, the WHU game should be a tough game and Spurs have struggled to score at home as freely as they have away from home. West Ham usually up their game for derbies and have conceded the joint fewest big chances this season.

Yeah, good points. Keeping the money in the bank will also help with future transfers and likely less hits.

Would you captain KDB over Son this week? I have 3 City mids for this week, then Sterling to Salah likely for GW6.

Know? Of course not. But he plays in the early hours of Wednesday morning and has a 15 hour flight back from Chile on Thursday for a lunch time kick off on Saturday. Can’t see him performing at his absolute best but this is Everton’s biggest game in a while so he surely starts.

New contract, talisman performance for England and against Liverpool in the last week, maybe he will feel he needs to step up and take them.

Watkins didn’t have much of a record of taking them so it’s probably between Ross and Jack.

Thing is, Grealish has never been our penalty taker, and if I'm being honest, it never looks like he fancies them.

El Ghazi took the last one with Grealish on the pitch, and Hourihane was ready to step up against Palace before it got overturned.

It's Barkley for me, but let's see.

I'm fairly confident that KdB keeps pens btw.

No he isn’t. Gundogan took one last season with him on the pitch, aguero then missed his next one. KDB hasn’t missed a single one yet. He takes the ones that matter, aguero might get some of the ones that don’t.

Gundogan took one last season so what .. I'm talking several seasons main p.k is Kun. It doesn't have to do with missing or not

Penalty takers change. Aguero won't start every game anyways because of heavy rotation normally and more so with champions league plus he's 32 now and his injury problems have become more frequent and frequent so he won't have the legs to play as many matches anyways and will probably be subbed off early.think pep will want a constant penalty taker ready to step up every match. That'll be kdb.

So what? It shows that Kun isn’t relied upon as the main penalty taker any more, that’s what.

City get a penalty at 0-0. Kun even won it himself. Gundog steps up. Doesn’t feel like the ‘main’ PK taker to me.

I find it very unlikely Aguero won't want a penalty to get back among the goals when he's back.

Anyone declaring with certainty that KDB is the nailed on penalty taker is overstating their knowledge, unless you work for Pep.

It could go either way. I'm personally not sure KDB really enjoys them, he just felt he had to last year.

    Martinez 4.0
    TAA Chilwell Lamptey Ayling 3.9
    Salah Son Pulisic Grealish Stephens
    Kane DCL Maupay

+0.8 itb (+1.1 if Rodriguez snd Saiss rise and TAA drops). Enough itb to do Grealish -> Rodriguez etc. Flexibility is needed when playing an early wc

I think there are better options than Dier (Zouma, Chilwell, Saiss...). I also think there's probably a touch too much money on your bench. I would downgrade a tleast one of them and either keep money itb, or upgrade a starter

      Context - not wildcarded. 0 ITB, 1FT.

      Team is
      McCarthy Nyland
TAA Mitchell Justin Vinagre C Taylor
      Salah Fernandes KDB Soucek Bissouma
      Mitrovic Ings Jiminez

Obvs need to deal with Vinagre and Nyland. But if you think Mitro needs to go to say Watkins or Maupay then I could start seeing the logic of WC.
