Why looking at fixture runs after the expected Double Gameweek 26 is important

Three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser talks us through his Wildcard thoughts.

The Wildcard button is calling me and all I’m waiting for is the confirmed rearranged fixtures before I activate it – although I’m not sure if I’ll go through with it if we don’t get an annoucement before the Gameweek deadline.

This seems like a good time to step back and process information as a lot of us are going to make some key decisions in the next few weeks. With this article, I write about some players and trends that have gained my attention in the last few Gameweeks.

First up, let’s talk about Marcos Alonso (£5.7m). He looked a lot like his old self in the game against Newcastle and mustered five shots, four of which were from inside the box. He is definitely in my Wildcard thinking right now but I very well know that he isn’t exactly nailed. If you do want to roll the dice with Alonso, it is advisable only if you have a deep defensive bench. I get the feeling that he could drop a 15-pointer in any game if he continues in the same attacking vein. It looks like Tuchel is going to persist with the 3-4-3 formation and his comments with regards to Alonso seems particularly encouraging.

There are a couple of other reasons why I like this pick. Outside of a potentially difficult Double Gameweek in 26, Chelsea have a good run of fixtures around it. On top of that, they have posted strong underlying numbers in defence in the last few Gameweeks with only Manchester City conceding fewer shots in the box and big chances in the same period. It is worth mentioning again that if you decide to roll the dice with Alonso, a deep bench in defence is needed. There are safer, more nailed picks like Antonio Rüdiger (£4.6m) in play in case you’re not one to indulge in punts which are not nailed.

One mistake that all of us make is having a Double Gameweek tunnel. More often than not, you will find yourself with a team entirely focused on Gameweek 26 and the players you have picked might not have good fixtures afterwards. Keeping that in mind, I have pasted the Season Ticker below for Gameweek 27 and beyond which might help with some decisions.

There are a few key factors here that should influence your thinking. First up, it is likely that Southampton have a Double Gameweek in this period. Also, it is worth noting that their fixtures after Gameweek 26 are really good as well, which makes me pay closer attention to assets like Danny Ings (£8.4m) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m) despite their poor form. I personally expect a better performance from the Saints in the coming weeks because I rate their manager and a lot of their good players are back fit.

A lot of people are not sure about Ings at the moment. For me personally, based on the eye test, he has looked very sharp in the last three Gameweeks and has been fairly unlucky as well. In addition, I still like the Leeds fixture for an attacker, which is why it is worth going there in my opinion.

I have already spoken about the Chelsea fixtures around the potentially difficult Double Gameweek above. In addition to defence, Timo Werner (£9.2m) has been accumulating points at a good rate playing in his preferred left-forward position.

It is also worth noting that Leicester City, Liverpool, Leeds and Aston Villa have decent fixtures post-Gameweek 26, which allows you to carry their assets after the Double Gameweek. The advantage with Leeds players is that they have a good fixture in Blank Gameweek 29. It is possible that Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa could play in Gameweek 29 as well which is something worth considering while making your transfers.

Personally, I am even looking at cheap defensive assets from Brighton and Hove Albion because of two factors. They have good underlying numbers in defence and have decent fixtures in Gameweek 26, as well as Gameweek 29.

For those that are not Wildcarding in Gameweeks 25/26, there is a decent fixture shift in Gameweek 31 and it is potentially a good time to Wildcard then. The notable fixture shifts are as follows:

  • Aston Villa sit bottom of the Season Ticker in the period from Gameweek 31 to Gameweek 38 and a lot of us will be on at least two Aston Villa assets in that period.
  • Arsenal and Wolves have a great run of fixtures from Gameweek 31 onwards and not many of them are in our squads at the moment.
  • It is also worth noting that Spurs, Manchester City, Fulham and Southampton will have a Blank Gameweek 33.

Before ending this article, I want to bring to your notice a few player stats that have caught my eye in the last four Gameweeks:

I hope you find this article useful and it helps you plan better in this very important stage of the season, as every transfer we make needs to be very carefully thought through.

Good luck this Gameweek!

Struggling with my moves this week

3m itb, no wildcard left but fh and tc intact

    Areola
    Lowton Maguire cancelo
    Sterling gundo Rashford Bruno souceck
    bamford dcl

    Fabianski coufal holding lacazette

I’m thinking a hit might be in order

Souceck to Raphinha and assess again for 26? Going be a hit needed at some point to sort things out

Hi...does my plan sound reasonable here? Wildcard and tc left.

2fts this week for Bamford and raphinha. Gives the team below

26....cash for Bamford to kane (tc) hopefully gives me 11 x dgws

27 to 29 - use fts for bgw29 players.....should be able to field 11 if villa spurs moved to 29

    30 / 31 - wildcard

I'll have to ignore kdb I think

    pope (martinez)
    Cancelo dallas Lowton (dias coufal)
    Salah Bruno grealish gundogan raphinha
    Bamford dcl (watkins)

Thats where I am with chips as well, and I'm planning the same strategy, albeit with a slightly different team.
      Meslier
      Dias Mee Dallas Cresswell Targett
      Sterling Foden Bruno Son Soucek
      Bamford Kane BDR

Will be switching Son, Bam & BDR to Vardy, Watkins & Barnes/Maddi before GW26 to get 10 DGW out, then work towards 10/11 for BGW29 hoping that AVL-TOT happens then, & WC30.
This feels like make or break now. Currently at 350k, having been at 100k a couple of weeks ago.

I'm tempted on something very similar but not sure about TC Kane with Spud's being so low scoring. Also think I'll start Martinez over Pope.

      Martinez
      Cancelo Dallas Mee
      Salah Bruno Son Grealish Gundogan
      Ings Bamford
      Pope Stones Antonio Coufal

    Price changes are a joke,

KDB on -103, doesn't drop and is now on +98

Raphina on +98 and goes up FFS there's no point in monitoring them

No need to monitor them, smartest move is to make transfers closest to deadline in this clusterf*** of a season

if you really think leicester score then it's a good time to roll with Areola
I played him in the double and still couldn't match Emi - also got burnt couple of weeks ago
you'd be more confident of holding out SHU than LEI but also Martinez haul really hurts your rank

Is return of KDB and his killer passes enough reason to keep Sterling ?
Lets be honest Raheem is shite at football he cant control the ball, cant dribble and his long range shooting is non existant.
However.... there is one thing that he is very very good at - timing his runs in front of the goal and tap ins, so with KDB's delivery he should be good right ?

Pretty sure every City player that has played with Sterling last few weeks have fed him great chances, but he keeps bottling them. So unless Kdb dribbles the goalie and waits for Sterling to tap it in a open net, i'm not sure much will change.

Ressisted rage transfer yeasterday night. torn on what to do now. Leaning towards keeping this GW, alternative is sell for Son or for Raphina, which again depends whether I'll be playing 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 in DGW26.

Got rid of Sterling even before the game. Held him for way too long and lost all the Gundo points. No intentions of getting him back anytime soon. He seemed very isolated in both games, and spurned most of his chances (as always). Would consider KDB but I'm done with Sterling this year

And you clearly does not know or understand the modern game of footie. Sorry, but that statement is so far out. STERLING is one of the best wingers in the world but he is not the best finisher. But he is detrimental to how City play. Pace and runs a lot in spaces to create New spaces for the likes of foden, ilkay, mahrez etc. And havent seen stats for dribbles completed but he is pretty good at it. First touch not always at par, but very often in higher tempo than de brune so difficult to compare and 11 de brune would not make a good team.

I think Dias is a permanent fixture and the other 2 will rotate around.

That would be my take on it for the rest of the season but I'm sure Pep looks at Laporte and Dias as his No1 pairing.

Yeah so I would say in order of nailed-ness it would be Ederson -> Dias -> Cancelo -> Walker -> Rest of the CB

Yep but be comfortable with the fact that when you really need any of them to start that Pep will give you a massive kicking. 😉

It honestly will happen to every single City player. That's the risk we got to take. Currently, I have 2 and I'm considering whether I'll even need the 3rd one over other nailed DGW players

The 2 defenders and one of Gundogan ( at present) or Silva works pretty well as it's not the major investment of Sterling/KDB/forward. Works fine with the 14/15 man squad rather than the strong 11 tactic.
DGW is always a pain when Pep is involved.

Not planning to WC this / next week. Which moves (-4) should I make for next week?

    A) Ings, Coufal -> Kane and Cancelo
    B) Ings, Raphinha -> Kane and Barnes
    C) Ings, 4.3m ST -> Kane and Watkins
    D) Ings, Raphinha -> Watkins and KDB

All would give me 10 DGW Players and might end up TC next week. Currently have Son Bruno Salah as big hitters.

I like Kane and Barnes. These are the two I'm looking to bring in. Watkins in for DCL before 29.

I don't have DCL tho. Not planning to Wildcard so my only everton player currently is Digne.

It's a shame that my 2 transfers in were Ings and Raphinha this week

These are my moves. Villa attack hasn't been great in recent game so I'm not prioritising Watkins in 26 but need him for the blank.

I'm still debating whether Antonio to Ings in 25 then Ings to Kane in 26 is worth 2FTs

Oh those are my moves for my FT. (Antonio to Ings and Ings to Kane etc).

But I migjht very well monitor Spurs and if they don't show signs of Improvements and Southampton does well and have back to back DGWs then i might keep Ings instead.

once again, the "B" City players outscore the "A" on a double gameweek.

When will we learn? it's been my 11th FPL season and I am still wondering this morning hos the hell did I again went for Sterling who's just a bad player playing n a very good team.

This is the last time I'm picking a player on the asumption he could come good. I'm now only going for players I highly rate and play my own game.

It's very inspiring current world n°1 has Bilva in his team for instance. Trust what you see, follow your gut instincts, better fail with your own ideas than with the mainstream group.

    My DGW26 team will be this and BB(no wild card just a -4);

    Martinez / Pope
Target, Cancelo, Stones / Shaw, Dier
    Son, Salah, Bruno, Gundo, Barnes
    DCL, Bamford, Watkins

I think Bamford is the only one without a DGW

Well last night was a bit of a washout, but the one thing I asked the FPL gods to grant me this week was a first green arrow in 6 gameweeks, which they have allowed. Only a small one, up to 750k, but nice to stop 5 weeks of sliding down the ranks.

He's nailed till Llorente / Koch are back. Which could be in a few weeks time.

KP does not influence his role in starting. Though he's alot more effective in CB than he will ever be in his life at CDM. You're expecting goal threat from set pieces (Leeds might not keep many CS if KP is out)

        2. Boly Would
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

No, Koch and Llorente do. But it seems Llorente is made of glass so I wonder if Bielsa will go steady with him. Struijk could be good for a few more yet, plus he's not actually playing too bad.

          1. HammersXI
            • 12 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

Llorente isnt going to start till end of March at this rate. Even if he's fit, Bielsa will give him extended run out in the u23 and monitor. He's come back twice and relapsed, and Bielsa himself is worried about his mental state, so thats not happening anytime soon.

Koch... will start once he has 1/2 games in the u23. But that seems like end march also.

Yeah bodes well for Struijk for now at least. Like i say I don't think he's played too badly recently, definitely more assured as a CB so Phillips back will only help him. And he gives us a threat from set pieces we've massively lacked for a while..

              1. HammersXI
                • 12 Years
                3 years, 8 months ago

No offense, but he's horrible at CDM but Bielsa is stubborn and refuses to change the system. He could very well have a Villa game again where he got a early booking and got hauled off from CDM after 30 mins.

                  3 years, 8 months ago

Yeah that's why I say he's more assured as a CB... ignore the change for the Arsenal game and he's built up a steady partnership with Cooper over the previous 4 or 5
All this is on the proviso that KP is fit. Bielsa's reasoning for Struijk in CDM makes sense, he's just not very good there!

Thanks. Could be useful. Yes I would only need for a few weeks. I do not went too much money on my bench.
