Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 2?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are faced with a tough captaincy decision for Gameweek 2.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) go head-to-head again after huge opening-day hauls, but there are other FPL assets whose cases deserve examining too, including Sadio Mané (£12.0m), Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m).

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 2 Captain Poll, before then analysing the leading candidates, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Unsurprisingly, Salah has dominated the vote so far.

The Egyptian midfielder, who produced a goal and two assists last time out, has gained 63.4% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Only one other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Manchester United midfielder Fernandes currently in second place, backed by 19.79%.

Mahrez occupies third place with 2.88% of votes, with the top-five list completed by Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Mane, with 2.3% and 1.54% respectively.

MOHAMED SALAH AND SADIO MANE

Tough call. I'd personally go with benching Sarr, but only because Everton are great at making clangers against direct teams.

So frustrating to have to choose only one team out of City, Villa, Leeds, Brentford to watch on Saturday

The multiple kickoffs is such a step backwards for FPL imo

Its all subjective but I couldn't care less what is good for FPL myself - 3PMs are the traditional kick off time and having them back last Saturday was amazing.

Yeah totally subjective - Personally I hated having multiple kickoffs back in GW38, was so much better being able to watch the full 90 minutes

GW1 wasn’t just as bad as it was only 5 games rather than all 10, but man it was such a step backwards imo

And only being able to watch one of City , Leeds, Brentford, Villa week is a disaster, such a drag

Hope this is a tradition they eventually scrap altogether, give people the choice to either watch or not

The drip feed of games was awful for FPL imo. Enjoyed it at first (during lockdown), but so glad it's back to normal. The 3pm goal rush is what makes FPL exciting.

Personally thought it was one of the only good things to come out of lockdowns etc & really hoped they’d stick with it & do away with having more than 2, or max 3, games kicking off simultaneously

Hopefully multiple kickoffs will eventually die out

It isn’t though. I don’t know what the “L” means, but footnotes explain (1) injured/unavailable players don’t lock until their price has moved once and (2) a player that is locked will have an “unlock” date. Neither applies to Veltman.

                  *(1) above is not correct.

The lock happens after a player who is injured/unavailable become available again. Here are the relevant footnotes from the fpl stats site:

                  9. When a player is injured (0% chance of playing), suspended or on loan his price can still change in value. However, once his status has changed (to fully available) his price will be "locked".

                  10. When a player is "locked" i) his price will not change, ii) transfers in and out will not affect his price, and iii) his Target percentage will be set to zero. To view the locked players and determine the date and time at which they will be unlocked look in the "Unlocks" column (You may need to expand the view using the green row expander on the far left of the row to view this information). If the date and time is in the future then the players price is current locked.

Still unclear why the site puts an "L" in status column of a player who is not locked.

Bruno vs Salah (c)... Here's my take on it.

Overall, stats favor Mo Salah. He plays higher up, he shoots a lot, everything seems to align on him being objectively better. But there's another angle to look at it.

How will the game actually go?

Jan, who did the captaincy articles last year for Scout after an amazing 19/20 season, made an interesting point about how he chooses to pick his captain which I think makes a lot of sense. Envision how you think the game will go.

We know what Burnley are like. They defend deep, they deny space and push forwards wide. Salah has traditionally struggled against those sorts of teams. I can't see why that would be too different this time around. Home crowd, sure. But they can also ramp up frustration if there is no early goal. And frankly what happens on the pitch matters more. What sort of game is it? Liverpool piling forward trying to force their way through. I didn't think they looked too fluent against Norwich and were actually quite clinical in front of goal to get their goals. I think it's quite plausible this is a low scoring game where there is a lot of space denied.

On the other hand, United looked really good. Pogba owned the midfield, they cut through at will and Southampton looked weak in the middle against Everton. Southampton play a high aggressive line and this suits United's speed in transition. The actual game state seems to favor Bruno heavily over Salah imo and I think this is a prime case of stats vs eye test/game flow. I think Mo is gonna win most stats battles - it might even make people just perma cap him but I think this is an opportunity. A good one. Bruno has a very high ceiling in this game and I think it's worth going for. I'm leaning very slightly Bruno atm but obviously in any one game anything can happen.

    Good luck all!

Not sure but I like his process.

And ultimately, I think that's what matters more to me. I find that if I have a good and logical process for picking a captain, I'm happy. I also have higher risk tolerance and feel you should be trying to hit big captain scores on the off chance you whiff than to 'play it safe' every week.

Depends on the type of player you are as well I suppose.

Some interesting points, but I think it’s possible to get yourself into some real tangles when using eye test/intuition instead of stats.

The ‘eye test’ will tell you that Burnley push salah wide, he struggles against them etc etc. The fact is that he amassed over 2 xG in his last 2 starts against them without scoring. That’s variance and is a pretty strong example of the failings of the eye test IMO.

Burnley and Southampton are equally bad at defending in my book, but Southampton ‘look’ so much worse at times because of the nature of the goals they tend to concede.

Which defense is better - Pope, Mee, Tarkowski or McCarthy, Stephens, Salisu...

Every game is different, every team comes in with different form and personnel. Analyzing past games doesn't mean that much. I don't put more weight on the fact that Bruno has scored heavily vs Southampton or that Salah has scored fewer vs Burnley. It's more about HOW the game will play out, respective forms coming in and which players are going to be on the pitch that matters to me.

Past performances against specific teams don’t matter a jot - but you said yourself Salah has ‘traditionally struggled’ against those sorts of teams. I’m just not sure that’s the case.

What are the respective form factors you’re taking into account? What even is ‘form’?

You think that past performances by two teams that have largely the same players and approach don't matter?

They do matter. I meant that past individual performances don't matter much. Like Salah has 1 goal, 2 assists in 8 matches vs Burnley or that Bruno has 2 goals in 3 games vs Southampton.

What matters more is how the two teams match-up given all the current factors.

Form factors for me relate to how a team performs in recent matches.

At the moment we only have 1 game logged but Southampton looked worse than Burnley and United looked better than Liverpool imo. I think it's fairly safe to say that form favors United over Pool. The cohesion of a team, the way they pass/move etc. These can be subjective but also can be seen in stats.

For me it's a dead easy choice. Nobody can make a watertight case for one over the other. One will have a good bit lower captaincy. These are the days we live for as FPL managers.

The key difference being, Man Utd we’re at home last week and Liverpool were away.

This is the biggest factor that’s stopping my captaining Bruno over Salah. And I’ve swapped several times this week.

I'm not sure you can derive any meaningful measure of 'form' from a single game. Remember when Spurs were in poor form after GW1 last season? Remember when City were looking imperious after GW1 away at Wolves?

Obviously do what works for you - just trying to give the other side of the form/eye test argument.

Liverpool were the form team in the league with 26 points in 30 at the end of season taking them from 7th to 3rd. Not sure what you are on about there.

Home vs away is huge here aswell. I think liverpool's away performance last week was just as impressive as United home performance. United playing away in front of fans still to be tested

Southampton were playing away to Everton. Burnley at home to Brighton. I think the fact the defensive stats were close, suggests how bad Burnley were

Very much equal to why Az was heading towards Bruno (C) on BlackBox.
          I'm on that too.
To me Burnley can frustrate every top team except City (where they tend to lose 0-5), and I expect them to sit deep throughout the match,
Southampton lost key players. Got beaten by a rusty looking preseason Everton in GW1. Are the 1 team you'd bet on to let in 9 goals. Keep attacking which makes them vulnerable.
And.. could Milner potentially be on pens?

Loving those points. Essentially we're talking about how a team will fare against another team with similar or different tactics, which honestly Im very bad at.

Shouldnt their past history help a bit? Liverpool past 3 games score only a few pass Burnley eg

People talking about Burnley's poor defending and Liverpool being at home, even if Liverpool win emphatically, what makes you think Salah will dominate the goals?

That's a fair point - historically this is more of a Mane fixture.

You are right. Salah hasn't proven himself over the years yet. Just constant decline and let down every season. Mane far more consistent. Bobby too. Reckon there could be 5 goals in this and Salah nowhere near any of it.

I just can't see Salah latching onto TAA's crosses. And that's where the most of the threat is going to come from, imo.

Salah played good vs Norwich, but I don't think you would be happy with two assists, and the goal was just good finishing from him after the poor clearance.

I absolutely love Salah, and he's probably the best player in the game, but that doesn't make him 10+ points player every week. He has the overwhelming numbers, but he misses chances too, and he blanks.

You better write some arguments about why should you captain him this week, like that Burnley conceded most of the shots from the position where Salah will be, rather than this condescending comment.

                Ok.

I think Salah scores well because I expect liverpool to win comfortably and most of the time when that happens Salah is heavily involved. It is unusual when he is not. This game is at Anfield and the fans will be manic because this is the first time they can celebrate being premier league champions together. Burnley were poor last week and have been poor away from home for a long time. Salah and trent work well together. Trent does far more than cross the ball to influence the game. I think Burnley will have to learn how to play in front of fans and I think doing that at Anfield will be brutal. Could mane do well? Yes. But planning for Salah to not do well seems unwise to me.

I am not planning him doing poorly, it's just, I think people are expecting Salah to absolutely put Burnley to the sword, and I am not so sure. I think it's Salah's pedigree vs Bruno's new role and it's a close call. Really, really close.

It is really close and my guess is they both haul. But if I learned anything from last week, it is easier to haul at home. Liverpool needed time to adjust to the crowd. All of last weeks home teams are yet to overcome that. That sways it for me. Nothing wrong with going bruno though. Who knows who gets more points. But if you are expecting liverpool to do well tomorrow then expect Salah to be a big part of that. We will find out soon ènough

You could also put the Brighton game as a counter example, (although it's more anecdotal, rather than stats driven)

              https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/53283275

Salah was really impressive here vs deep defending side, scored a header too. Also connected to "without Mane" theory.

A lot has been said about home advantage and how having fans back will make a difference this season, but who do you think will likely find having crowds back a hindrance?

          I'm guessing:

Arsenal - Probably from early on unless they somehow outdo Chelsea this weekend

Newcastle - If they don't add anyone else to the squad and they start sitting in defensively again, and if anything regarding a possible sale of the club crops up again

West Ham - Again if they fail to add to the squad (which it's starting to look like might happen) especially with a busier season

Might even say an outside chance of Burnley, with the debt they've put into the club now and the lack of additions I can see things becoming difficult for them this season

No but it was always going to be template early on. No point thinking about it. First international break wild cards will really shake things up.

An Aston Villa injury update from boss Dean Smith:

“Ollie Watkins, I don’t expect to play, he's not healed as quick as we would like so far.

"Bertrand Traore suffered a hamstring injury last week so he will be out until just after the international break.”

The goalscoring burden resting firmly on Danny Ings shoulders so…

Reckon he has a cheeky brace in him his weekend

Not convinced, he was quite isolated up front against Watford and without Watkins it ain't gonna get much better

Bailey one side, Buendia in, El Ghazi too, presumably.

          Bachmann (Foster)
          TAA Tsimikas Shaw (Ayling Amartey)
          Salah Bruno Mahrez Benrahma Buendia
          Ings Antonio (Obafemi)

I am saving this week but trying to think a bit ahead on what to do GW3 with 2 FTs assuming no injuries.
Really tempted to only use 1 FT in GW3 to move Ings to DCL/Bamford instead of the I assume more popular downgrade and Mahrez > Son (c). This would mean I will have 2 FTs in GW4 and be able to also move Buendia (Sarr looks very good) and sort out Tsimikas (if needed). Thoughts?

Presser at 1.30 will hopefully confirm, but he's been back training normally since Wed, so I'm confident he starts.

Need to lose 1 of them though.
