Scoutcast Episode 386 – Forward thinking needed for Gameweek 5

Joe, Seb and Andy help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 5.

Forward options dominate the agenda on this week’s Scoutcast as our trio face a wave of injuries and tough decisions in attacking roles.

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m) are elite finishers, who look destined to replicate their Gameweek 4 hauls across the campaign.

But their hefty price tags mean that they are not easy to squeeze in to most FPL managers’ budgets. Who is the preferable option? Or is picking both possible?

The crew consider the options in maximising the points potential of this pricy attacking pair, while ensuring the rest of their squads can continue delivering.

There are further challenges in attack for FPL managers. West Ham’s Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is suspended, while another well owned mid-price pick, Everton talisman Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m), is injured for a few weeks. Alternative budget-friendly options are considered, with Leeds striker Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) topping their shopping list.

A kind run for Marcelo Bielsa’s side is prompting interest in Bamford and his teammates. Leeds fan Seb is on hand with his thoughts on how they may line up and their prospects for strong returns.

Fresh from their Wildcards, Joe and Andy look back on their green arrow in Gameweek 4 and how their new recruits may be able to weather the challenges ahead, especially in attack. But can Seb recover from his red arrow, or will he be tempted to deploy his Wildcard?

There’s teams, differentials and captaincy decisions to reveal and also a chance to catch up on the Scoutcast’s management of a veteran Fantasy manager’s team, who has had to dip out of this campaign for mental health reasons. With a top 100 finish last season, the pressure is truly on to maintain his strong record.

Is Gray hot form a fluke? Or do you think he can sustain it like Lingard and Wilock last season?

Keep in mind Gray has always been an inconsistent player for leicester in terms of end product

I don’t think he will keep it going all season but I’m gona ride that gravy train for as long as I can. Rafas systems seem to suit him and for his price there aren’t any better IMO.

I personally, think it's only a matter of time until the likes of Gallagher and Gray's points start to dry up, Gallagher maybe less so than Gray.

For this reason, and longevity, I went with Doucoure over Gray.

That might ofc be true, but it needing £ for the big hitters, you need a £5.5 midfielder spot, and swap around between them. Enough options available in addition to the two mentioned - ESR , Ødegaard, Doucoure, Townsend...

He did not get much playing time at LEI though.

Will be difficult to sustain his output but at his price, what can go wrong?

He will do better at Everton than Leicester. Different role and will play most games. For his price you will get a fair/decent return over a season.

With DCL out for a few weeks, Gray is as nailed as someone can be. Even if Rod comes back, I can only see his output increase. Once everyone is fit, will have to see Everton's formation but until then, he looks like a good pick for his price

We got to remember, you can't expect a consistent flow of points from a 5.5. If he got these points over twice the amount of games, it would still be ok.

I grabbed Gray last week on a WC, I liked the Burnley fixture and his ownership wasn't too high.
Would I grab him this week, possibly unlikely. But that's just my mentality as to how I play the game.

I'm putting him in my WC as there's a lack of decent mid priced midfielders - only Jota appeals to me. Gray has decent fixtures for next 5/6 games and nailed on to play. Doubt he keeps this up but for 5.5m he looks good value.

    12. Dogs Of War

What you have to remember is that last season Everton were seriously lacking pace. Gray brings that and is an outlet that will play the majority of games.

A 5.5 mid in a decent team who'll probably get 10-12 G+A atleast this season, and it also enables me to spend the money on big hitters. It's a yes from me.

Will regress but at just over 5.5m still offers good value. I own Gray but actually prefer Doucoure as an option.

Wouldn't have the combo of Doucoure, Gray and Gallaher, are you confident that all 3 of those players are going to consistently perform? I can see the appeal of Gray/Gallagher just be wary imo.

I'm on Sanchez and was looking to upgrade to Sa or Meslier when he hits bad fixtures GW10. But I've changed my plans and can't afford it. Instead, I note that I can switch in McCarthy for a short spell to cover that run and bring Sanchez back afterwards.

Made the DCL > Bamford move already, how does this look for this week? Is the bench order/captain choice good to go?

    Sanchez

Bench: Steele - Williams - Livramento - Antonio

Well, yeah.. I made the decision in haste which in hindsight I shouldn't have done but here we are haha. Sissoko nearly scored at the weekend, in (in my opinion) a stronger side in a more advanced position.

the ref didn't even give a foul and he was looking right at it - pretty obvious if Elliott didn't get injured he wouldn't have even been given a yellow, VAR wouldn't have even looked at it - terrible decision imo

        1. Kodap
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 6 days ago

It's a ridiculous decision if you ask me, nothing but an unfortunate accident, even the player who's laying in a hospital bed with a broken ankle is saying it was never a red card? Rules need changing if that's the case. If half of the Liverpool bench hadn't emptied and run onto the pitch it would have never been given. Obviously I'm glad Harvey is okay and wouldn't wish that upon anyone but a ridiculous decision.

        2. Boly Would
          • 8 Years

Wasn't Son booked for his tackle on Gomes a couple of years ago, which changed to a red based on the injury? And then it was rescinded on appeal?

Poor consistency considering the ref didn't even give a foul against Struijk, yet Son was initially booked.

          1. Kodap
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 6 days ago

Yeah exactly, so why would this be any different? When I actually think this one was more accidental. All the talk is about how Harvey is only 18 etc, but Struijk is only 22 himself.. the way Klopp conducted himself was unfair and again the outcome is inconsistent.

    2. Studs Up
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Basically he was given a red for the outcome of the injury, rather than the foul imo.

      1. Kodap
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 6 days ago

But that's not correct? Or if it is, the rule needs changing.. if me and you were to be playing and run into each other by complete accident and I gashed my head open to the point it was horrible to watch/see.. would that result in you getting a red card due to the severity of the injury?

Exactly. He changed his mine when Klopp and half the Liverpool players started kicking off/running onto the pitch..

    3. WVA
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 6 days ago

Hmmm its a really difficult one, at first I agreed it was a complete accident which can happen in contact sport but on watching the replays he has jumped in from behind completely off the ground and not in control, don't get me wrong I didn't think it was a bad tackle but he wasn't in control and as such landed on the back of Elliot's leg which caused his ankle to break... really tough as I love a good tackle but I do agree you need to be in control and I don't agree with jumping in off the ground as that is likely to result in an injury to the other player.

Okay. Jota is the player I fear most not owning this week. But I guess one would fear Salah more. If you ignore their prices and penalties, Jota's stats are just as good as Salah's, so it's not like Salah is much more likely to score.

I started with Raphinha and Harrison. Not working out so far. Now, I wouldn't double up until I see evidence of better attacking play. If they can't do that against Newcastle, I'll give up and get rid. If they do well v Newcastle, then I'd bring in two.

its not like a bruno and cr7 double up. They are cheap. It is not a overkill

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Shaw Coufal Ayling Tsimikas
    Salah Torres Benrahma Raphinha Brownhill
    Ronaldo Antonio Ings
    1ft. 0.2 itb.
    A) Antonio to Bamford, Ings to Antonio next week probably
    B) Coufal to Semedo/Marcal, bench Antonio (most likely Ings to Bamford next week)
    C) Other

Digne owners whats the plan? Worth getting rid for Semedo?

    1. IAWC ( It's a Wonderfu…

my plan was to have him for 3 weeks and get rid for james or rudiger in gw7 but looks like I have made a mistake getting him in the first place to unnecessarily book in transfer all coz of jamers suspension. I have semedo along with him, so if u dont have him better ship

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Cancelo Veltman
    Salah Havertz Sarr Gray
    Toney Ronaldo

    Subs: Steele, Gilmour, Livramento, Antonio
    0.5 ITB

    A) Use my FT to do Veltman to Semedo
    B) Roll Transfer and play Veltman
    C) Replace Toney (possibly with Saint Max)

Trinc, he has been unlucky not to score and wolves have great fixtures. However he does get subbed off at about 60min

Jiminez. I had the same choice but I decided to go all in.

More likely than not Wolves will have at least 1 or 2 games where they just click.

On WC, will be playing 442:

    (a) CR7, Gray, James
    (b) Bamford, Son, Cancelo

    Any thoughts?

    Bachmann Foster

    Salah Benrahma Greenwood Jota Brownhill
    Lukaku Antonio Toney

What do you think of Coufal and Toney to Semedo and Bamford?

I'm asking myself the same question...

  23. Kryptonite666

Kinda regretting selling Antonio, did that to fund Ronaldo which precipitated a wild card

    Current draft is this:

    Sanchez
    TAA James Rudiger Marcal
    Salah Jota Raphinha Gray (Mendy)
    Lukaku Ronaldo (Perica)

No way to shoehorn Ronaldo, Lukaku, Salah, TAA and Antonio - is there ? Cant have them all I suppose.

You can fit them all quite easily in a 433 but the defense will be pretty poor.

Started with him. The logic of keeping is that if he is not in the game, he cant drop. Any 4.5 strikers that you recommend

If Kane gets any stinkier, Captain Scarlett might get minutes.

I actually have CR7, Kaku, Antonio, Salah and TAA in my squad.
