FPL Gameweek 8 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned

You’d have been lucky to avoid at least one of your players suffering a benching in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on Saturday, with usual suspects Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel joined by plenty of others in throwing teamsheet curveballs aplenty.

Elsewhere on a busy day of FPL, Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) continued his red-hot form, Chelsea and Manchester City kept yet another clean sheet, and bargain-bin options Shane Duffy (£4.4m) and Tino Livramento (£4.2m) reminded us of their worth with solid defensive returns.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 8 fixtures.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

It was a fairly quiet day on the injury front, with few fresh concerns reported so far.

Marcelo Bielsa did however confirm after full-time that Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) had missed out through a combination of hip and calf issues, while Junior Firpo (£4.8m) was absent with muscle problems.

Anthony Martial (£7.6m) sat out Manchester United’s defeat to Leicester City with a minor injury picked up while on duty with France but teammate Harry Maguire (£5.4m) made a swift return to playing action – and probably wished he hadn’t.

THE THINGS WE LEARNED

PERMA-CAPTAIN SALAH?

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) is 27 points clear of any other FPL player after his fifth double-digit haul of the season; he managed just six of those 10+ returns in the whole of 2020/21.

The Egyptian is a remarkable 35 points ahead of where he was at this stage in his record-breaking 2017/18 campaign and is now averaging over 10 points per match this season.

All of Liverpool’s front three were among the points in the 5-0 win over Watford but unfortunately for Diogo Jota‘s (£7.6m) owners, he wasn’t part of that attacking trio. His omission was all the more galling given that Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) scored a hat-trick of goals from point-blank range, central areas where Jota has been getting – and spurning – chances in recent weeks.

EVEN DIAS ISN’T ROTATION-PROOF

Only one ever-present starter remains among Pep Guardiola’s squad following Ederson‘s (£6.0m) anticipated no-show and rather less expected benchings for Jack Grealish (£7.9m) and Ruben Dias (£6.2m) on Saturday.

The rest for Dias was a particular bolt out of the blue as he was the mainstay of the City defence last season: the centre-half was a substitute in only one league match from his Gameweek 4 debut to Gameweek 30 (the point at which Guardiola started focusing on the Champions League and FA Cup, with the domestic title sewn up), and even that was because he had just recovered from illness.

Joao Cancelo (£6.2m) is the last man standing when it comes to bench evasion, having started all eight of the Citizens’ league fixtures in 2021/22.

He has racked up more clean sheets (six) than any other Fantasy asset and now sits top of the FPL defenders’ table on a half-century of points. Not only that but despite his premium price tag, he sits fourth for ‘value’ – a metric typically dominated by budget assets – when points are divided by cost.

RONALDO/LUKAKU ARE TESTING OUR PATIENCE

Three straight blanks for Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.6m), four consecutive two-pointers for Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m)… how different the Fantasy landscape looks now following the clamour to crowbar both strikers into our teams a month or so ago.

Lukaku huffed and puffed to no avail at Brentford and now has had just six shots in the last four Gameweeks.

Ronaldo’s opportunities have dried up a tad, too, and he hasn’t had a single Opta-defined ‘big chance’ in his last three outings.

Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) has outscored both of them combined now this season, and his strike against United was his fifth in four matches. No forward can better the Leicester veteran for shots or penalty box touches over the last four Gameweeks.

WHY RAPHINHA MISSED OUT

It was always going to be a tough ask for Raphinha (£6.6m) to start after racking up 71 minutes of pitch-time for Brazil on Friday morning and, in the end, the Leeds winger didn’t even make Marcelo Bielsa’s matchday squad, let alone the starting XI.

The Leeds boss said of his star midfielder after full-time:

“Raphinha, we had decided that he was going to fly after his game, without knowing how many minutes he was going to play on the Friday. In the end, he played 70 minutes, flew 15 hours and today at midday he wasn’t in conditions to take on board even a part of the game. Given that he wasn’t in conditions to respond, we didn’t risk because it’s possible in circumstances like this, injuries can occur.”

MBEUMO IS OWED SOME LUCK

Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) blanked in the late kick-off against Chelsea and despite two goals in the last four Gameweeks for the ‘out of position’ midfielder, his luck appears to be right out in 2021/22.

No Premier League player other than the Brentford attacker has hit the woodwork more than once this season – but Mbeumo has been thwarted by the frame of the goal on six occasions, twice on Saturday.

A total of 16 of his 19 shots have been technically off-target but it’s hard to chastise his finishing ability too much when we’re talking millimetres on those half-dozen occasions.

Image

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 7

Raul Jimenez (£7.6m) and Adam Armstrong (£6.0m) were among the high-profile names who were on bench-warming duties on Saturday.

While the jet-lagged Mexican’s cause was helped by a limp Wolves attacking display from open play (Bruno Lage’s side scoring three times from set pieces late on), Armstrong’s owners would have been concerned to see Armando Broja (£5.0m) turn in a match-winning display in his stead.

Broja is top for shots in the box in Gameweek 8 so far, while no forward could better his total of 10 penalty area touches.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s rotation policy continues to bemuse but given his price and fine display, the Albania international is an intriguing prospect.

He’s long ceased to be an option for many of us but it’s worth highlighting Bruno Fernandes‘ (£11.9m) recent creativity, with his Gameweek-high total of seven chances created taking him to a total of 22 over the last four Gameweeks – that’s 10 more than any other player has managed.

Still can’t understand people holding a non playing 4.5 forward … when you can get a nailed 5.5 one

Depends on your budget and strategy
Think it's less so this season but last season there was a lot more value in the mids and defenders and so people were happy having a fodder 3rd bench player who never plays to invest the extra 1m+ you'd spend on a playing forward elsewhere
This season it's less relevant as more of a bench needed due to seemingly more rotation and the fact that there's a lot of budget players delivering so budget isn't as stretched this year

but it’s not an extra million though, it’s just a straight choice between a non playing 4.5 forwards or a playing 4.5 (or cheaper) defender or mid sitting on your bench.

There is a pretty good choice of forwards that are value for money and match mids for their price … I understand the reasons but the logic simply doesn’t stack up and this week with all the issues meant people actually need 3rd off the bench.

I have DLiiz, Livra & White on my bench and they were not more expensive than Davis or Scarlett etc - the former group I would be happy to start any week, the latter I can not start any week.

This guy should know better 😉

it is an extra million if that 4.5 fwd is 3rd on the subs bench and never plays, i have 2 x good subs and more money to spend on team as a result, when it comes to it i see more points generally in a 5.5m mid or def as opposed to a 5.5m fwd, that's my logic at least

the idea is that you do start your third forward though …

If there was a 4.5 forward that started then I would agree and be happy to bench him with the comfort that I can use him in emergencies or rotate with another duffer.

i don't see too much difference between a brownhill type 2 point type of guy and a 4.5 fwd zero point type of guy 3rd on my bench, i wouldn't want to play a 5.5 fwd every week (unless someone truly genuine who could match a smiliar priced def/mid emerges, maybe a Hwang or whoever) and my 3rd sub whoever they are is almost never going to play

forget about the 5.5 if you want and concentrate more on a higher priced but good value starter up top and a playing 4.5 mid or defender on your bench … compared to a similar value starter in midfield and a non starting 4.5 forward.

Ings, Watkins, Richa, DCL, Wilson, Toney, Dennis, Hwang … loads of them ti chose from

Why play the game with just 12 outfield players for the same budget as 13 … when we are given 13 to play with ?

Doesn’t seem logical if we have decent 3rd forwards to start, which we do have

Same, always have, which is weird because for a few seasons now, mids have in general provided better overall value than fwds, who apart from a few exceptions have tended to under achieve…

Very difficult getting out of the 4.5m fodder striker especially if do not have enough ITB.

Rather have a 4.5m to 5m mid for your bench which is going to score points just about every week compared to 4.5 fodder striker which you are stuck with.

why waste a million though? all those 5.5 ish forwards are rubbish, similar priced defenders getting double the points, and almost to the same extent with cheap mids, and that's why some people don't want to waste their money in that slot when there's better value elsewhere

i had duffy earlier, and have livramento now, who are great, but also have the funds for a fourth premium defender, who i think will score me more points than a 5.5m fwd

and then when you are a few players down like this week you take a hit to bring in a starter or go with 10 players because you can not rely on your non starting 4.5 forward

The argument for ‘well we never use our third sub’ fails to recognise that people take a hit because they can’t use the third sub anyway because he is a non starter 😉

jota non-starter for me this week, 2 x good subs to cover, i feel over a run of games playing with a 5.5 ish def/mid will net me more points than playing with a 5.5 fwd and having the luxury of having a playing 3rd sub who might have to play once every 10 weeks (and in that case given any early news of injuries i would likely use an FT to deal with the situation)

            2. SAY MY NAME
              • 7 Years
              3 years, 15 days ago

taking a hit or playing with 10 in an emergency (although i could well have an FT spare) may still be effective if the strategy of a different structure with a 4.5 non-playing fwd nets more points over a run of games, which i believe it will, unless i see a genuine option 5.5 fwd who i think could outscore the equivalent def/mid

      2. Hotdogs for Tea

you are not wasting a million lol, the idea is that you start your 3rd forward each week not bench him … and in any case you can step up to 6.5 or 7.5 etc if you don’t like Hwang or Dennis or whomever

We have winter fixture congestion, Covid, IBs with late games, injuries, rotation if you want to delve in to City/Chelsea etc … the game is a bit different these days and we get more flags than a national day celebration so having options that start is a lot more important imho

        1. SAY MY NAME

but i think a 5.5 mid or defender scores more points than a 5.5m fwd, so that's what i go for, if i go for 3 x fwds i would want to go up to at least Toney level

That's the safe, mediocre way of playing the game. The skilful way is to spot the underpriced player who bucks the trend.

but mostly it's a trap, unless you find the original vardy at 4.5 etc, but they're so rare, if i see one great, till then it's mediocre all the way 🙂

i have 2 x good bench options, if i need to go to 3rd bench option it's likely only a 2 pointer from a 5.5 fwd, and i think that million is better spent in my playing team and imo should provide more points - if there are injuries/covid cases i can transfer one of those players - if i really wanted 3 up front then i'd want better than the 5.5 options in order to make it worth it

quite interesting to check, my 10th & 11th players really, assuming I have to have 3 at the back and two forwards are always nailed

my third budget forward (a mixture of Wilson, Dennis, Toney & Hwang) position has given me 23 points in 7 games.

My fourth mid or defender (Gundo, Ben, Coufal, Jota etc) has given me 17 points

One premium forward and two 8m gives you the most flexibility up front as you have more variety to switch up or down from 8m.

As it is, the midfielders in the 7 to 8m range not living up tbf. Far more value in the mid priced forwards compared to the mid priced midfielders.

Which essential (@5.5m), must have (super attacking and plays for ‘free scoring’ team) player (who had a magnificent Euros) who started FPL with 50%+ ownership (I think) is this:

    1 - 4 - 6 - 5 - 2 - 0 - 2 - 0

And despite ownership down to 25% has only dropped 0.1 to 5.4, with one attacking return (an assist in a 4-1 win)?

If anyone had suggested a month ago captaining a player against Man United away when you have Lukaku home to Norwich, they'd have been abused from pillar to post, and yet here we are - it's a serious dilemma.

yeah 100%, I'd go as far to say this is the best Salah has ever looked in the PL. I know people were joking a bit about him breaking 300 again, but he might've just done it (if it wasn't for AFCON).

On another note I do think Norwich look more defensively assured playing a 5 back with 3 midfield, they might not necessarily be the whipping boys that it looked like they were at the start of the season.

Agreed on Norwich - think there has been definite progress there since Kabak came in and with the new formation. Can't see anything like enough goals but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't end up with something similar to the Fulham defensive record last season as opposed to the SU one.

I'm not sure it's the right time to be buying Antonio, with West Ham's fixtures he probably won't do too much damage; tomorrow will be a good showcasing though, Everton away is tough.

Leicester looked brilliant today shifting into wingbacks with Nacho supporting Vardy, so getting Vardy in for CR7 should probably be the play (and hope he keeps sitting out the EL).

Are you keen on getting TAA in or not? Those spare funds could be used to upgrade Alonso/Rudiger to him

Is Alonso worth keeping in this team?

    a. Alonso -> Chilwell
    b, Amartey -> Livramento

    Sánchez
    Cancelo, Alonso, TAA
    Raphinha, Salah, Fernandes, Sarr
    Ings, Antonio, Toney

    Steele, Duffy, Gilmour, Amartey

if you do B, then for the time being I'd say yes, whomever starts in the LWB role for Chelsea has such a high ceiling. But give it until the next international break and if Alonso has only started 1 of the next 3 in the PL it's time to ditch.

Looking at Leeds vs Wolves GW9, I would rather have Hwang or Jimenez over Raphina.

Bamford does not look close to a return soon which is one nail in the coffin already and Leeds are in utter freefall.

        Really?

I'm remembering his United days. Also not at all convinced Norwich is a good enough game for that move. They're showing a fair bit of defensive resilience recently, Finding it tricky to compare this to a City or Liverpool Norwich match up.

Yeah, they have shown improvement in last couple of games and Chelsea are looking clueless in attack. But I'm a firm believer of Luka being a flat track bully and I love to own him, will give 3-4 games and then reassess.

I was considering Werner-Luka double for next 3 games but I'm not sure about that anymore, Werner atleast looks better than Luka at the moment.

Really torn here - was all set on it but really dubious now. Chelsea goals are all coming from that bloody defence.

Thinking of the hit to Son instead if he's fit to give me the Son Vardy combo. Irritatingly I'm 0.1 off Firmino as the makeweight to get the awkwardly priced trifecta 😉

Bobby F is actually intriguing. His minutes per goal since coming back late last season is quite okay and that's the attack to be on surely.

I think Tuchel has to start Mount in PL now, should make things better. Looking forward to Chelsea midweek game to get some hints of who is going to start vs Norwich. A Chilwell benching would make things interesting... 😀

Have you got Toney? Pretty much same fixtures as Chelsea and probably a better pick than Werner. Wouldn't trust Firmino for FPL yet. Fixtures are iffy as well but they are Liverpool!

I'm also looking at Zaha 😛

                Still have Edouard 🙂

Giving him the next couple anyway and any return and he stays. Strip out City match in 10 (where he's benched) and Palace are close to top of ticker. Not sure they'll score too too many goals but think he's where they'll come from. Not sure Toney is where Brentford will score. Mbeumo surely can't hit the post again. Watkins and Jim possibilities if I get Son.

I'm not sure about Son but that's probably due to Spurs being meh.

I think Toney should be further forward in easy games, less defensive duties. You can watch Brighton and Wolves highlights.

      Zombie team or real team?

The zombies are likely to put out 11 again and should end the week around 50k and in contention for FPL team of October! Currently on 70 with 3 good'uns to go and finished with GR of 1121 last time out 🙂

Real team is way behind in the mediocre pack. 59 from 7 and will only get 10.

Real team on 59 but low expectations of anything more than 65 which I guess will be high average no more. Zombies on 70 with a good chance of 80 plus.

I give Lukaku one more shot then i may try Vardy

I agree on Foden and Chilwell (although both on form and currently first choice IMO), but I think Cancelo is fairly nailed now. He may get the odd rest, like Dias, but expect him to start 90% of games.

My only concern would be the ground he has to cover over a lot of games in the next few months. Lets face it, his defensive duties could be better. I have him so I am not knocking the choice. If Chilwell and him don't play you might want an upgrade on the bench.

      Vardy

The man has an incredible consistency record when he is on a hot streak - 4th season in a row he's gone on a run like this averaging all but a goal a game for a sustained period.

Was thinking of just doing Ronaldo to Kane (I already own Lukaku), who scores more ?

    A) Kane (vs West Ham, Man U, Everton, Leeds, Burnley, Brentford)

    B) Ronaldo (vs Liverpool, Spurs, Man City, Watford, Chelsea, Arsenal)

What I noticed from the games yesterday for what it is worth.
Mbuemo will get points eventually. I have lost count how many points he has lost through hitting the post and yesterday was no exception. He was the guy on the end of things and Toney the enabler. Will that be enough as he is not on pens.
Cornet for Burnley is a different class than the rest of Burnley. I see him being good value at 6 mil in the future.
KDB was awful in the first half and his price will limit anyone getting him in. He needs a few more games to get up to speed IMO.
I was a little disappointed yesterday with TAA. I am not saying he is a bad pick but his chances of losing form have been evident in the past. Hopefully it is coming back from injury.
Not that Kaku is firing but his opportunities are limited by the way Chelsea play him at the moment. This guy is someone I cannot work out. If it was not for fixtures I might be looking somewhere else.
Mendy was flavor of the day and very good. Would not be surprised if people start getting him in. Just remember a clearance off the line. 2 attempts hitting the post and one his face would indicate Chelsea are not that good at the moment.
Firmino could be a trap as in other seasons. A hatty does not hide the fact he passed poorly especially in the first half.

Haha...did you watch all the games? Thank you anyway.

Agreed about Mbeumo. He might start netting more now that he has an easier run.

KDB is priced out and he seems to rarely score goals from open play these days.

TAA - he will come good. He had one decent effort second half.

Lukaku - yes he is very frustrating to own. I think he is getting marked out of games too.

I thought Buendia and Macgill had decent games for Villa.

I did actually. I live in South Africa and have this opportunity. Pool Citeh and Chelski I watched 90. Man U only got seee highlights as I have none of Leicester or ManU. TAA in my side but against Watford I expected more from him. Remember last year when he had a poor run of form. Hopefully due to poor central defender not getting the ball to him.

Firmino could be a trap. But that I think is 6 goals from his last 5 PL starts with one more off the bench in that time. So not a complete one off. Liverpool is the attack to be on and Jota is a wild finisher as often as not (if he plays) and Mane is as pricey as.

Will depend on budgets and structures but I can see 8.8 working out. Definitely not seeing (m)any mids over 7 I'd prefer. Now on watchlist.

I love Bobby as a player and I would love to get him. If Kaku did not have the fixture he has I would like a punt TBH. Bobby definitely started off ragged with his passing though.

The Firmino thing is hilarious - just shows how a player can go from being a complete FPL no-go zone to finding his way onto watchlists with literally one game against an absolute shambles of a team

I fully expect to see him in RMT’s during the week now, hopefully along with Bilva

And Shaw and Bruno of course because we all know that every season is wholly predicated on the last and it's a cinch to predict how many points players will score.
