Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-3 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£7.3m) | Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m), Harry Kane (£12.1m), Son Heung-min (£10.1m)
  • Assists: Javier Manquillo (£4.0m), Jacob Murphy (£5.0m) | Sergio Reguilon (£5.1m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m), Kane
  • Own goals: Eric Dier (£4.6m)
  • Red cards: Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Son x2, Wilson x2

KANE ENDS PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL DROUGHT

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 1

Having failed to score in any of his opening six Premier League appearances in 2021/22, Harry Kane (£12.1m) finally ended his goal drought against Newcastle United in Gameweek 8.

The England captain looked much more like his old self at St James’ Park, and resumed his link up with Son Heung-min (£10.1m) with an assist for the third goal. As a result, he bagged maximum bonus and ended the match with an impressive 12-point haul for his small army of owners.

Given Spurs’ next three fixtures – West Ham United (a), Manchester United (h) and Everton (a) – we perhaps have a little while longer to scout Kane’s performances, before his fixtures ease considerably between Gameweeks 12 and 15.

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 2

Interestingly, that also coincides with trickier runs for premium forwards Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), which may be a switch worth considering closer to the time, depending on how each of them perform during the coming weeks that is.

Son Heung-min, meanwhile, was once again on the scoresheet, and has now produced six attacking returns in just seven Premier League appearances this season.

NDOMBELE’S INFLUENCE

Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m) fired in Spurs’ opener on Sunday, and impressed in his more advanced central role.

During the match, he registered five goal attempts and four shots in the box, more than any other player on the pitch. His 36 final-third touches – including nine in the penalty box – were also match-leading totals, and highlight his growing influence in Nuno Espirito Santo’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Tottenham Hotspur’s average touch map v Newcastle United in Gameweek 8, featuring no. 28 Tanguy Ndombele

It’s also worth noting that since Oliver Skipp’s (£4.5m) return to the starting XI in Gameweek 7, Spurs have looked a lot better defensively, something Nuno touched on in his post-match interview when discussing his new midfield set-up:

“It worked really well. We were able to be more solid in the middle of the park with Skipp and Hojbjerg being side by side, although we still allowed one of them to have freedom to support in attack. It was the same idea but a little bit different and it worked better.”

WILSON BACK ON THE FPL RADAR

Newcastle’s new era got off to a disappointing start at St James’ Park, but the return of talisman Callum Wilson (£7.3m) from injury was a real positive.

It took the 29-year-old just two minutes to find the back of the net, as he ended the match with a goal, two bonus and eight FPL points.

As for the Magpies, the reality is that the club remain without a win this season and now sit 19th in the table. They also have the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 19 goals so far, while the underlying numbers are equally as bad.

MetricTotalRank v other Premier League teams
Goals conceded1920th
Clean sheets019th=
Shots conceded12918th
Shots in the box conceded7214th
Shots on target conceded4219th
Big chances conceded2220th
xGC15.2420th
Non-penalty xGC12.8717th

Encouragingly for their FPL owners, the likes of Conor Gallagher (£5.7m), Romelu LukakuIvan Toney (£6.4m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) all take on the Magpies’ in the coming weeks.

“We were certainly beaten by the better team. After a wonderful start, unfortunately the problems that we’ve had for a while now defensively was there for everyone to see. The goals we gave away, you could say it was a lot of good play from Tottenham, but our defending left a lot to be desired to say the least.

I think we’ve started a few games like that – we’ve got off to a good start, we’ve scored and got our noses in front, but unfortunately at the moment, we’re not able to defend well enough as a team. I’m not criticising the back four or the midfield players, football is a team game, but from front to back at the moment, we’re not defending well enough.

We have tried to change and be a little bit more on the front foot, but it’s difficult because you cannot keep having to score three goals to win a match.” – Steve Bruce

Newcastle XI: Darlow, Manquillo, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Longstaff (Shelvey 60), Willock (Murphy 77), Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wilson (Fraser 77)

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Royal, Romero, Dier, Reguilon, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Moura, Son, Kane

Benrahma had 860k owners at the end of GW2

Since then he has added 2.2 million new owners, who he has kindly destroyed with 5 blanks in 6 gameweeks

Still feel he’s a decent pick though. West Ham are a very good side and he’ll drip the kind of points you’d expect for 6.5.

Can make much the same point about Antonio with almost exactly parallel figures. Think Benrahma is actually two points ahead 🙂

Yeah, time to move Antonio on. We all thought he looked so impressive over the start of the season, but were too blind to notice he was playing Newcastle, and weakened defence at in Leicester, and a Palace Team who are finding their feet under their new manager?

          He's still a good option

Just think the premium striker priced at 7.5 narrative (can't recall who was driving that one 🙂 ) was always overblown.

Really depends if you like spending transfers chasing form and fixtures at that price bracket imo

I always like chasing form and fixtures with players in these price brackets (mid priced forwards and mids) - usually I am prevented from doing so due to injury problems that need addressing.

Feeling pleased with myself having had him in my gw1 lineup and then sold him in gw7 wildcard. He was outperforming his stats. Happy with my points and money banked from him 🙂

I'm actually thinking of benching Foden next GW vs bri.
    * Raphinha vs WOL should be good
    * Gray + Townsend has a great fixture vs WAT
    * Antonio vs TOT have to play I think
    * Toney vs LEI is the one I'm not sure about.

Foden vs bri or Toney vs LEI? Try to ignore the price difference 😉

I own Foden and I will never bench him and yes Ive got 7 from 8 to chose from too. Benching Watkins next GW. Foden starts then hes main man for best team in league. He comes on as sub then City need him to score so he will be up for it. He doesnt come on and your bench deal with it.

Why is everyone holding onto Antonio or even getting him on WC? Other than the first 3 GWs, he has flattered to deceive. In matches he blanked, he even manage to get 2 YC and RC for good measure as a striker. He still rank very high on RMT tool which confuses me too, despite his upcoming tough fixtures. I am moving him on. Who is the best replacement? Budget 8.0

    1. Toney (don't own Mbuembo)
    2. Armstrong ( not sure if he has lost his place or not)
    3. DCL (if he return for GW8)
    4. Wilson(the talisman for an awful team, but proven FPL asset)

I sold for GW7 to get Lukaku so it hasn't exactly been my greatest move but happy with it going forward (see what I did there 😆 ) but currently trying to replace Ronaldo with someone...

      1. My current choice (I don't own Mbuemo either)
      2. Broja I think is the better pick
      3. Injured and may not even make it for GW9
      4. Newcastle are too poor for me to go down that route right now...

One to consider in the budget category as makeweight and depending a bit on tonight is Edouard

Strip out the Man City game in 10 and Palace are close to the top of the ticker until GW20 or so. Newcastle next week a tempter for sure.

Short on big chances so far and Palace looking better irl than in FPL but feel like a team on the up and who will create chances.

Definitely think he's worth a place on a watchlist and would have him over Armstrong.

Getting him in ahead of City in GW10 is clearly an ahead of the curve shout 🙂 But by then Palace will have played 7 of last season's top 10 plus Brentford and Brighton. The fixture run is golden,

Obvs a guess but I suspect Edouard and Olise will be the Palace assets to have over more template now Zaha and Gallagher. They compete directly against Toney and Mbeumo for price and fixtures. Brentford pair clearly ahead now but worth thinking about if the double up is a worry.

Long term he is a good pick, sometimes you just leave these players in your team and take the double digit returns when they happen, which they will

        3 years, 24 days ago

        Fair strategy that

Prefer myself to get and hold rather than chase fixtures at that price bracket. Preseason research showed almost all of those types returned randomly and not according to fixtures,

Antonio and Wilson actually both iirc did better v top 10 than bottom 10. And looking at Antonio and WH this season I can see the same pattern. His recent blanks have been in pretty green fixtures, He'll come good again if you're patient.

If your Captain and differentials come in often enough you will rise up the league. If they don't you won't.

Salah permaCap looks the go for now so, unless you want to bet against the world's top player in the form of his life, it's down to picking good differentials

GW38 rank is yer only man. More than possible to reach top 10K by then. Don't play it too safe but don't go taking transfers too early in week in case injuries etc bite. Maybe better to gamble on a hunchpunt than picking players likely to be rotated. The captain's poll here is a good guide, will bring returns most of the time. Remember that doublegameweeks, wildcards, benchboost, having exact money for transfers don't make your targets better players, it just looks like that. Don't pay too much heed to advice here just pick your own team and learn from any mistakes. Don't drink and drive the transfers. There's many ways to play the game, none are wrong, with hindsight. Enjoy yourself. A man who never made a mistake never made anything.

You might want to prioritize swapping Jota to someone else since Firmino is back and firing already. CR7 can score against anybody on any given day. It is not like Lukaku is on good form anyways. Wont surprised me if Norwich park the bus at Stamford bridge and chelsea won 1 nil by a corner headed goal by Chalobah or something.

WC is partly to make changes you don't normally want to use a transfer on. GKs and benchers. Bissouma could go, maybe Amartey, but perhaps you are happy with your GKs. With Jota and Benrahma too there is enough for a WC for me

      Yep

And West Ham have created 7 big chances in that time as opposed to Norwich creating 5.

He's still a decent pick but Europa (they were rubbish last time after Europa) and fixture swing downgrades him.

Depends on how Luka is playing.

Son is a good pick, cant afford him though. So zero Spurs for me.

Double up not worth it yet until you see a definite consistent play at Nuno's spurs.

We're back to GW1 really - all the candidates then are back in the mix especially if Bamford is fit again.

My guess is that Ings Watkins Wilson Nacho Jim will more or less match each other over the next 7/8 and if there's a runaway leader it'll be because one of them starts stats breaking - can't predict that.

Liverpool are scoring shedloads at the moment. I am just wondering if doubling up on Salah and Mane and just leaving them would be an option...

Both will also start every match.

great differential, can compare to saurez and sturridge ,every body had the teeth so sturrige was overlooked and bagged every week ,the same is happening with salah and mane ,problem is cpins ,mane about 3.0 m coins more than sturridge was ,but for me a viable strategy G/L ...

You need to choose a horse and stick with it when it comes to Chelsea or Man City - if you try second guessing Pep or Tuchel you'll end up on the losing side more often than not.

And then next week could be a good WC since Gallagher, Gray fixtures turn bad and your defense needs fixing.
