Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Final

No more stick or twist, then. With only Sunday’s final between Spain and Italy to come now, Fantasy managers have just one shot to get their armband options right. Luckily, we’ll have the team sheets beforehand, affording us the chance to tinker and make last-minute alterations to our lineups before the 7.30pm deadline.

Spain’s progress to the final has been based on the ability to nullify their opponents’ attacking threat. The defending champions roll up to Sunday’s final on the back of four successive clean sheets – the only team to find the net against Vicente Del Bosque’s side has been, ironically, Italy. Jordi Alba is the top scoring player in the McDonald’s game and, with scores of (7, 10, 7) in his last three, is perhaps the strongest option for those looking to captain a Spanish defender.

In midfield, Xabi Alonso’s spot-kick duties may play a part and, while Xavi and Andres Iniesta have produced a single assist between them all tournament, their class is always capable of coming to the fore. Up front, David Silva has been Spain’s most reliable Fantasy asset in terms of both returns and game time. One of Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Torres or Alvaro Negredo will get the nod for the central role – Fabregas was handed a start in the position against the Azzurri in the Group C opener and could well be favourite.

Italy will be looking for Mario Balotelli to prove the difference once again, with the Man City forward’s brace decisive in the 2-1 win over Germany. Andrea Pirlo has, arguably, been the tournament’s stand out performer and will surely have a say in the outcome, while Antonio Cassano’s contribution to the cause was evident tonight. Elsewhere, in the Azzurri midfield, Claudio Marchisio and Riccardo Montolivo could both be decent differentials as Cesare Prandelli’s side look to upset the odds once again.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

ppl saying hits aint worth it.. but i'd rather get a midfielder/defender who have a high chance of RB's in a probably low scoring game than get a zero from a non-playing mid.. playin points and RB's alone will cover the hit and then all pooints gained are a bonus

    Neuer, Tzorvas
Pique, Jordi Alba, boateng, Hummels, Miguel Lopez
    alonso, iniesta, busquets, khedira, ozil
    silva, varela, oliviera

with only 4 transfers left, i intend to make the following changes
    hummels---> sergio ramos
    boateng-----> barzagli
    khedira------> pirlo
    ozil------------> Fabregas

should i go for casillas instead of neuer by losing 3 points???

    Have I missed something?

If you fancy a team to win (either Italy or Spain) and not concede is the best tactic (unless you are defending a decent lead) to gamble and fill a team of 9/10/11 players from that team?

It might be easier for me as I have no Italians but I don't see them scoring.

So is a team such as the one below really so rediculous if you expect a Spain 1-0 win?

    Cassias
    Arbeloa Pique Ramos Alba
    Busquets Iniesta Cesc
    Silva Negredo

    * Team will vary depending on starting line up
    * Cant afford more Spanish and don't want to take hits
    * Negredo is already in the team and would take a hit to remove him

As long as you have the full back 5 of the team you think will get the CS (5 x 6 = 30 points), missing the scorer of the 1-0 goal is not that big of a deal (4 points for forward, 5 for midfield + 1-2 points for playing X minutes).

If the final turns out to be a goalfest (e.g. 4-0), then buying more offense players would be reasonable...but that just doesn't seem likely.

Evening folks, just like many others, I've pooled the majority of my funds in that German investment vehicle and it turned out to be the most epic fail move ever in my fantasy football career. However, I am still on a few points lead in a local prize league, therefore I have to make some necessary changes, including a point hit.

Can I get some good opinions from you lovely folks? Players with asterisk means FT is used on them. No asterisk means owned from previous selection.

    (No GK)
    Ramos* - Balzaretti* - Alba - Abate - Chiellini*
    Iniesta* - Busquets - Pirlo
    Balotelli - Cassano*

Considering a second point hit now...

For defending a lead, I recommend 3-3 split defense combined with negating the runner-up differential players in midfield and/or forward. See my post on page 5 about focused and split defense.

I would try to squeeze in all 5 defenders for the CS. Even if you have to take one hit for it.
90 min + RBs = 0 (assuming no YC). CS potential +4. 4 points = forward goal. So CS defender is better than Torres who scores once because Torres is not likely to play 90 mins and will not get the RBs.

Going with 5 spanish in the back because

If score 0-0 having 5 spanish 5 italiens a bit of both its the same

If italy score they wobt keep a cs imo infact everytime they scored in this tournment they have conceeded so why bother with the italien defense

Spain have conceeded a single goal in all the tournment and have won the previous 2 finals 1-0

    What do you think?

I dont think your sample size is large enough to generalise and say everythime something happens something else will happen.

That said Spain are clearly defensively solid as a rock at the moment and would be the one to back. I might have a sneaky go on Balzaretti too if he starts because he's so attacking.

If Spain lose ball possession, they will have to put high pressure on chasing it back. That way, players like Pirlo and Montolivo won't have time to execute a placed pass, whether long or short.

No chance. Italy are gonna rock Spain if either team don't change their game.

I've got a thesis on the Azzurris:
Higher the possession Italy's opponents have, generally better the result for Italy.

So if I go heavy on spain, and they do well, I will score less points than most people. My only chance of doing anything is to gamble on an italy win, and purchase their starting line up!!

Im in the position which I believe most are of maybe having to take a hit to get a full 11 out.
I think -3 is steep for a transfer so with this who do you think IS NOT worth bringing in for a hit.

    Im thinking:

    Cassano
Any italian mid other than pirlo
Alonso probably (although penalty duty may alieviate this)
    Iniesta
    Silva
    Torres
    Pedro

I know this gets rid of alot of player but makes sense to me.

True, taking another extra point hit (-6) makes it only lost 2 points total so I say it's perfectly doable and not a very risky approach. Or stack up the risk to (-9).

Midfielders (in the McDonalds game) with 2 points for 60+min can easily get a third point for RBs or CS = 0 value. Forwards can not. Midfielders also have a good chance of -1 (no RBs or YC) and a small chance of +2 / +3 (assist with or without CS/RBs).

If you are defending a lead, play it safe and avoid risks and unnecessary hits. At the same time, try to negate differentials from catch-ups.

If you are catching up to someone, take risks. Choose players who can score all or nothing, such as Cassano, Balotelli or Spanish middle forward.

FINALLY a single defensive player made it into the Captain Poll. Even though the top 5 scoring players left in the tournament are the Spanish back 4 and goal keeper. They should all be in the poll!

I am going to captain Alba though, he's been a rock in terms of fantasy returns for me this tournament. 1 last performance please Jordi!

I am going Alba too. A CS potential + attacking points potential is too hard to ignore IMO.

What are your thoughts on my team seeing as Spain have a super defensive record and last couple finals they have won 1-0

I'm not very good with odds, but i would say that if you have to make multiple hits for the final (in my case 7 to field 11 players), then the odds of gaining on average more than 3 points per hit are high. Put it another way, what is the average number of points per player so far in the tournament for spain and italy?

    Casillas
    Alba Pique Bonucci
    Iniesta Busquets Pirlo
    Negredo Torres Balotelli

as you can see, I have just 10 players (including Negredo, who will probably not start). So should I takie 3-point hit to get Xabi Alonso ? Or maybe even 6-point hit to get Alonso + forward (for Negredo of course)?

I am 33, 35 and 36 points over my 3 main opponents in ML 🙂

      I wish I had 10 players ....

I'd take the hit to get Alonso, but wait until the lineups are announced.

Yes, take the hit! I'm gonna do it too! With RB and goal threat (set pieces), he's a must have!

You have 3-1 split defense. If someone has 5-0 focused defense and they get the CS right, they will gain either 8 points (Spain defender count 5-3 in their favor) or 16 points (Italian defender count 5-1 in their favor) on you. Buying an extra forward with -3 will not solve this.

See my post on page 5.

    MORNING ALL!!

after ozil saving my live I still top my friend's league

I can probably get all the spanish starting 11 by taking a 6 pt hit but most likely I might not risk it by playing 9 players

    should I take those hits?

Focus on the defense. So that no one gains CS points on you due to you having incomplete Spanish defense while they do. As for the offense, how many goals do you think are likely in the final? If 1-2 goals, then only 2-4 offense players will rack up those points, and the rest are pretty much a waste of transfers, money, and negative hits.

I am 13 points ahead in my ML.

Only really want to take a -3 hit as I think this can be claws back by appearance and RB points.

Realistically looking at only being able to afford 9 players.

With 13 points lead, if some of the chasers have full Spain defense for CS points and some other guys full Italy defense for CS (or if there are wildcards), I would recommend a 3-3 defense split to diversify the risk. Otherwise, if someone is backing the other team in defense for CS and they are right, they can gain 5 x 4 = 20 CS points on you.

If all of the chasers have full Spanish defense, you should also have that. 5 players, not just 3. Otherwise, you risk giving them 8 CS points with Arbeloa + Pique.

See my post on page 5.

How big is your lead? If Spain gets CS and Italy doesn't, Spain investers will get a 20 point swing in their favor. See my post about focused defense vs. split defense on page 5.

CORRECTION: Not 20 points, since you have CS 2-2 split. But going for a 3-3 CS split might be even more defensive option. The CS points difference can be massive this round.

I have a 14-point lead, who would be the best captain to choose? My toughest competitor will have at least four spain players in defence, so I will take four of them. I was thinking like putting Ramos as a captain. I have Arbeloa and Alba now and he has Arbeloa, Alba, Pique and Ramos. I was thinking to get Casillas, Arbeloa, Alba, Ramos, Balzaretti as Balzaretti - Casillas combo is cheaper as Buffon - Pique.

Try to negate his differentials. Good job with the defense selection.

The best captain outcome for you would be to choose the same captain as he has, so there is no differential. If the captaincy does not seem like an obvious choice, take a player who will surely rack up at least moderate points. No risky hit-or-miss tactics: if you miss and he hits, he may surpass you. Defenders who get lots of RBs are a good option, with CS possibility to boot. Jordi Alba has gained the most RB points out of Spanish defense so far. I would probably go with him.
