Meet the Manager: LiveFPL creator Ragabolly speaks ahead of Gameweek 22

Joe chats to Ragabolly about his LiveFPL website, which has transformed Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ understanding of the game over the last three years.

When chatting to Ragabolly, it seems incredible that he manages to pack so much into a day.

Not only does he teach physics at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) but he has also finds time to create and manage such a hugely popular FPL site.

Launched in 2018, his LiveFPL set of tools, or “his baby” as he refers to it, has vastly expanded its roster of features over the years.

This includes viewing real-time rank changes, tracking the performance of ‘legendary managers’ and a ‘what if?’ tool to see how players’ potential performance can alter rank.

Perhaps the most groundbreaking feature has been his look at effective ownership (which includes captaincy and chip use) amongst groups of FPL managers, including those nearby in the rankings.

As Ragabolly explains to Joe, in this rare interview, his work with effective ownership has gone a long way to helping FPL managers understand why their arrows are red or green each week.

In addition, he chats about his Virtual FPL game, which was a welcome distraction for thousands of managers during the Covid lockdowns of 2020.

During their chat, Ragabolly also reveals how his early work in developing a virtual FPL game was interrupted by the Egyptian army and how Fantasy Football Scout creator Mark Sutherns has helped him to develop his site.

He also discusses how he deals with mixed feedback from managers, who can have different reactions to being helped to understand their FPL performance a little better.

Ragabolly discusses his own impressive FPL team management over the years – finishing inside the top 100K in ten of his 12 campaigns, with 2017/18’s finish of 2,821 his best yet.

This episode was recorded ahead of Double Gameweek 22 and the LiveFPL creator explains how his freshly Wildcarded team is geared up for this set of fixtures.

Above all, what comes through from this hour-long discussion is Ragabolly’s enthusiasm for FPL and being able to offer managers greater insight into the game they also love.

The ‘Meet the Manager’ series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, an interesting view of the game and who offers the community valuable knowledge around Fantasy management.

      Vlahovic for me.

Looks the most complete striker of the ones listed. He already looks like he has it all in his locker, and at only 21 can only improve.

Hopefully Florentina want Torriera enough to let the deal go through this window. Think we miss the chance if he moves in the summer.

For Arsenal and how they set up, Watkins. He is not the best striker of those bit he is best in those areas Arsenal needs. Kind of like a sturridge was a better striker than Firmino but in the Liverpool set up Firmino was much more useful.

Doesn't mean that they will have enough midweek. I repeat if they fit the postponement criteria it isn't absolutely farcical

You say more than enough but they literally had 3 midfielders in their back 4 including a kid, another kid in midfield, and the only player on the bench who's played a minute of first team football from what I can see is Schmeichel. Just because they won the game doesn't mean they have "more than enough". That being said, Chelsea have been forced to play every week with a crazy number of injuries and covid so screw it.

            • 9 Years

This whole season is farcical tbh. The PL have been making things up as they go along with no clear predetermined strategy for different scenarios. It's all money money money ensuring that there's something to show on TV to keep the revenues flowing in.

Chelsea have never not been able to field a more than competitive team.

I think Leicester looked very light today, but agree unless they have more COVID cases this week (which Rodgers wouldn’t know at this point) would be farcical to call off

            1. George Sillett
              • 9 Years
              2 years, 10 months ago

By the rules it's not about fielding a competitive team , it's purely based on availability.

                2 years, 10 months ago

The rules state 13 players and 1 fit GK. The question was raised about why Chelsea had to keep playing despite having COVID cases. My point was that not only did they meet these requirements I can’t ever remember them not having competitive team.

Leicester numbers today looked a lot thinner than I have ever seen Chelsea, but bearing in mind the played today can’t see how they can request postponement this evening

                  • 9 Years
                  2 years, 10 months ago

We don't know about any other potential COVID cases or injuries so therefore we cannot judge.

                  2 years, 10 months ago

The competitive team bit is totally irrelevant - as I stated the rules are purely based around the number of players available.

                    • 14 Years

There is no way players who ‘potentially’ would have COVID would be allowed to play today so unless they have a suffered injuries from the game today struggle to see any argument

            2. Postman Ty
              • 10 Years
              2 years, 10 months ago

Ya I looked through the Leicester list and it's crazy how many players they have out but it's almost all leg injuries which shouldn't count under normal circumstances. The only counter point would be muscle injuries from overplaying players to make up for losses due to covid and fixture changes etc..

Chelsea have played a lot of strong player on paper sure, but they've had massive amounts of players out of position. Weeks without a centre forward and weeks without centre mids. Generally have at least 2 options in every position but they've been forced past that in so many positions for so long.

Is it silly to think the Premier League could've kicked off a week earlier and staged midweek games between GWs 1 & 2, meaning that by the end of August they'd already have gotten through something like five rounds worth of fixtures?

I think most people felt that COVID would thrive during December & January.

Its not hindsight though, is it?

Winter's a time for respiratory diseases to spread, as was shown in 2020' winter when COVID went nuts. I am talking about the lack of forward planning.

I can see any scenario of him playing both, one or none tbh. I’ve heard he is close to being back, he said “a couple of weeks away” before last weeks match and is back in training.

If Ranieri has made up his mind on his first goalie then 4 goals today wont mean anything. I have no idea. But from previous teams Ranieri took over he did not change goal keeper so my guess is, Bachmann plays until injured. Behind that defence and team in general not even Neuer would keep cs.

I think its stupid that the PL included non covid related issues as acceptable reasons for clubs to request a postponement. Every team with injuries will make the most of this and postpone whenever they can

Tough one. If you have say 4 or 5 injuries, but then get 10 cases of COVID not sure what the club can do.

The issue is when the club has a significant injury list and then a few players on AFCON, then gets 3-4 cases of COVID. That’s where it is wrong

      1. Alisson WondHaaland
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

While I agree to an extent, Afcon absences shouldnt be an acceptable reason since the clubs knew this beforehand. The focus should really only be on covid related issues, otherwise its just unfair on the fans and the opponents

        1. Top Dog
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

          Completely agree about AFCON.

I think maybe what PL should have introduced in the rule is ‘ must have a minimum of xxxx COVID cases and a less than 13 players in order to eligible for a postponement’

    3. My Name Is Prince
      • 11 Years

Helps the small teams though, money teams like City can field a great 11 even with the so called "first 11" all injured, whereas same doesn't go for teams like Southampton... So in that regard, although I do agree it sounds stupid (and kind of is) what is even more stupid in football is that money rules (like in life in general)

      1. Alisson WondHaaland
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

I agree, but its never been the case where games can get postponed due to lack of personnel, so why does this rule suddenly come in now? Its not just about the teams, its so unfair on all the fans that have made plans to watch the game

        1. My Name Is Prince
          • 11 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

Yeah I agree it's not fair for fans. Although you might equally argue that the fans want their teams to do well and, if you're fan of a small club, they do have a better chance to get points with their best players playing the games, it's quite a complex situation... Whatever you do it's bad for someone and good for someone else.

The audacity of Leicester. Seems to me, they have injuries, not a covid outbreak. Transfer window has been open for 8 days. They have youth players. What is it they want?

You don't know whether it's injuries , COVID or a combination of both . Are you implying that teams can fix things in 6 days by just signing a few players ? Introducing youth players who have no first team experience ? Laughable point.

Im saying they've already had games postponed. They've known of injuries to Vardy, Daka, they've know Iheanacho, Ndidi, Amartey will be off to AFCON. They are taking advantage of the situation and should be made to play for their poor planning.

Lets not forget, Arsenal had to play GW1 with Balogun, Martinelli, Lokonga, Mari, Chambers.

What would have happened pre covid when clubs got decimated with injuries? They dip into their youth academies, that's how Rashford got his break.

Too many clubs are exploiting the rule, Leicester being one of them, Leeds had a 15 year old on the bench V Arsenal, why are Leicester not capable of doing this?

I think clubs using COVID to postpone matches when in reality they just want injured players to return should have their matches forfeited and points awarded to the opposition.

I don't understand why Leicester should be allowed to postpone their match, since Norwich has been in even bigger trouble. And they have been unable to field a competetive team since GW 1.
