FPL 2022/23 ‘sleeper’ picks: David Raya

The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we look at David Raya (£4.5m), who could push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset in 2022/23.

The screenshots and data are from our Premium Members Area – sign up today for £2.49 a month (billed annually) to get access to all of these statistics and a whole lot more.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: David Raya 1
  • Starts: 24
  • Goals conceded: 27
  • Clean sheets: 8
  • Saves: 78
  • FPL points: 95 (4.0 per match)

David Raya was one of Brentford’s best players in their debut Premier League campaign, as they ended in 13th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

The 26-year-old featured in 24 games for The Bees despite missing a few months due to a knee injury, conceding only 27 goals and keeping eight clean sheets, form which earnt him a maiden international call-up for Spain.

In that time, Raya also collected five bonus and 20 save points, proving himself to be a very capable shot-stopper at this level.

The Spaniard ranked 17th in his position for FPL points, but matched Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) on a points-per-match basis, a record that placed him joint-fourth among regular starters, only behind Alisson (£5.5m), Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) and Ederson (£5.5m):

With Raya injured last season, Brentford missed his presence greatly, with his deputy Alvaro Fernandez conceding 24 goals in 12 appearances, only registering one clean sheet.

However, following his return to action in February, it’s fair to say The Bees and Raya stepped up a level.

From Gameweek 24 onwards, in 15 starts, Raya averaged 4.1 points per match, a tally only two regular starting ‘keepers could beat (see below).

Five clean sheets were kept in that time, while the Spaniard also racked up 56 saves – only Illan Meslier (£4.5m), Nick Pope (£5.0m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) recorded more.

Raya’s passing ability, which is crucial to the way Brentford try to play out from the back, is also worth noting, with only Alisson, Ederson and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) surpassing his BPS pass completion total of 32.

“I’ve always felt comfortable with the ball at my feet, and we work on that every week. The manager wants us to be another attacker, an extra element in bringing the ball out, creating chances and passes, short and long.” – David Raya

“The goalkeeper could wear the number ten shirt. He has sent several incredible balls, exactly what you should do when you play against us.” – Jurgen Klopp on David Raya after Brentford’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool in September

2022/23: THE PROSPECTS

Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford 5

After a stellar first season in the Premier League, Brentford will look to continue improving in 2022/23.

And their end-of-season form bodes well, as they won seven of their last 11 matches, keeping four clean sheets while only conceding 12 goals.

“We will keep the foundations from this year – the defensive side of the game, fitness and set pieces. Then we’d like to add a bit more on the offensive side of the game in terms of controlling games like we did against West Ham at home. That was a very good example of how I’d like us to dominate games even more.” – Thomas Frank

“I don’t believe in all this second season stuff or the narrative around it. That said, I know we can be relegated next season, but I also know we can finish seventh. Everything’s possible between 20th and seventh. We want to add layers, build and end higher and play better football. That’s the aim, but you never know what happens to a team when they get a lot of injuries or lose momentum. But hopefully we’ll avoid that and build.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford ended the 2021/22 season ranked eighth overall for expected goals conceded (xGC, see below), but the fact the players now look comfortable in a 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 offers encouragement that they can adapt tactically to different situations and maybe improve upon that defensive record.

Notably, the Bees have a sustained good run of fixtures right through until the World Cup break.

In fact, they don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool aren’t concerns until the festive period.

The big six sides they do encounter in Gameweeks 8 and 12 both have to come to the Brentford Community Stadium, too.

Now, with hopefully an injury-free season ahead of him, managers looking for value should consider Raya, who is perhaps the pick of the £4.5m ‘keepers on offer in FPL.

Is Trippier worth the 0.5m over Botman?

Probably. With Botman you hope to get clean sheet points. With Trippier you'd get the same points, plus a potential assist.

Hard to make calls like this in a vacuum.

Maybe easier to throw two sets of 3x players you're looking at?

I think so, yeah. We saw what Trippier can do in the few games he played before his injury, he's a big threat

We may also see Kulusevski play RWB at times, something Conte mentioned last season. But yeah Spence heavily linked, just need to agree a fee.

I think Doherty might stay, Emerson Royal more likely to leave imo, if Spurs get a good offer.

I despise Man Utd but, I'm trying to win a ML so, taking sensible risks is a good strategy.

Preseason will tell us a lot though. (i.e. Ronaldo situation needs to resolve itself before making a definitive call.)

But, Haller (9) Berghuis (10) & Tadic (11) were all great for Ajax.

So, why dismiss the idea that Fernandes, Rashford, etc. simply can't because they didn't last year?

Idk how likely the outcome is? But, for the cheap price we're playing it's worth consideration.

Don't dismiss anything as an absolute. There's too much variance in this game.

Team structure fans. What happens if the player you want to sell is not the same price or higher than the player you want to buy?

Let's say your one 8.0 mid is doing well with good fixtures on the horizon and there's another 8.0 mid that is emerging as popular and good, while your worst players in the team are at 4.5, 5.5 and 7.5m. You have to sell your good player (ignoring the weak points in your team), make at least 2 transfers or ignore the emerging player altogether (chorus: "or ignore the emerging player"), just like everyone else.

I've never really understood the structure thing. 9 times out of 10 it won't help you get the player you want, and you have to make sacrifices in the first place to get a suboptimal 'well-structured' team.

It's similar to 'booking in transfers'. You're relying on the players you own being bad so you can sell them. I prefer to be completely free with my team drafting, and deal with transfers when they come up. In fact, I'd rather pencil in a transfer because we know for sure that the fixtures change (so the player becomes 'bad' in a predictable way). So actually we are optimizing by doing that, rather than sub-optimising(?) if we 'structure' the team based on prices instead of points. Thoughts pls

I don't much care for team structure. Going 5 at the back because ultimately that is where most of the points are and because they're so cheap u can still get all the good players in midfield and forward positions.

        • 6 Years

And there are 2 basically creative mids at 4.5 this time so 5-3-2 is what I'm doing with those 2 my playing subs.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 3 months ago

I'm with you on that. The illusion of structure emerges from who you pick, which is based which combinations you think are the best, but 1-3 transfers later and the 'structure' could feel completely different.

The one thing I'll say for 'structure' is that it is of course true that a player is easier to sell the more viable players that there are that are cheaper than them. So then I'd have thought the structure-folk would want to fill their teams with 5.5-6.0 defenders, 8.0-8.5m mids, and 7.5-8.0 forwards, or something like that, with only one premium attacker for captaincy. It's clearly suboptimal for points, but maximises the coveted 'flexibiity' factor

"I've never really understood the structure thing. 9 times out of 10 it won't help you get the player you want, and you have to make sacrifices in the first place to get a suboptimal 'well-structured' team."

I too can anecdotally say that 9 times out of 10 it does help me get the player I want & I don't need to make sacrifices in my optimal 'well-structured team'.

Joking aside, everything in moderation, even moderation.

And, the "structure rule" does help with team flexibility ----> aka. horizontal transfers / fixing mistakes.

Example - Starting with a £4mil defenders locks us into 2x FT's to remedy any issues with that player.

Starting with a Fwd line of Kane, Haaland, & Jesus, again makes a move to Salah or Son troublesome.

Overall, team structure shouldn't come btwn us and trying to make the best decision. It more helps us mitigate when we inevitably get it wrong.

Is Meslier an underrated option? He's a save monster with not bad fixtures and although Leeds are leaky he's can tick away with 3 points then get a few 11 pointers when they hold out for a clean sheet. 2 cleansheets in the last 10 is poor but despite having a horror season at the back he still got 106 points due to 143 saves. With fewer injuries and a preseason under Marsch they should be better than last season's horrorshow despite the loss of Phillips.
Surely due to his save potential he could outscore Raya, Sanchez and Henderson.

In my draft, felt happier with him than others. Leeds are of course going through a lot of change now but he's shown he's a good shot-stopper and Cooper being fit as well as an improved backline should be a big help

Blocks a third Pool spot. Most are going for three from Mo, TAA, Robbo or Diaz.

        Agree on taa and diaz

If I could have 4 Liverpool spots I would have him

    4. Ser Davos
      • 9 Years

I think he may well be all things considered

Trent + Salah are givens to most of us so that leaves the last spot

      Alisson 180ish
      Robbo 180ish
      VVD 180ish

      Diaz

Now I think the cheaper keepers are a bit ropey and a bit of a crapshoot. Henderson, Raya, Pope, Martinez... that's about it. So investing just that bit extra in Alisson brings about a big uplift in points and guaranteed ones as well.

In terms of VVD, Robbo... In previous seasons we had Alisson at 6.0 and not much else in the way of defender selections. However, with Alisson at 5.5 and the immense variety elsewhere I think this is where an argument comes in for the Brazilian.

When you select VVD or Robbo, not only do you miss out on the value of the likes of Perisic, Laporte, Chelsea FBs and the 4.5 - 5s, you also have to pull a chunk of cash out of midfield, which atm isn't great when you're trying to reach that 8m slot.

The last argument is for Diaz, but from what I've seen he's a quality player and I can see the appeal, but I'm yet to be convinced all things considered FPL wise

    B) James(with Chilwell), playing 4.5

Both for the starting XI every week?

      If no, B
If yes, probably still B, but it's close and I expect most would prefer A (I don't have either of A in my current draft)

It doesn't matter to me that you have Chilwell already. One doesn't affect the other, and James should be excellent value. So long as you're saving a spot to potentially get Sterling or another Chelsea player as they emerge.

Setting yourself up for failure. Your funds are spread across 6 5.5 to 7.5 defensive players. Your attackers besides jesus are big hitters or dirt cheap. Trying to react and adapt to form with free transfers will be impossible. The bulk of the best best fpl options are in the 7 to 9.5 range this season and you basically have no access to them.

My advice is use 13.5m on 3 of your d/gk slots. Key enablers that give much better bang for your buck than neto. Reinvest the rest in attack

2022 newcastle after their january spending spree went from a bottom 3 side to a top 4 side. Remove their hidings by city and spurs and they conceded only 10 goals in 17 games with 7 clean sheets. They have since added a world class centre back and one of the best keepers in the league.

Presumably Tomi will be benched most of the time so may as well save 0.5.
Could use it for a 5.0 keeper instead?

Well spotted - basically with A the bench is weaker:

          A)
          Meslier
          Trent | Cancelo | Trippier* | Castagne
          Salah | Son* | Martinelli | Gordon*
          Haaland | Mitrovic

          4.0 Keeper | N.Williams | Pereira | Greenwood*

          B)
          Meslier
          Trent | Cancelo | Perisic* | Castagne
          Salah | Kulusevski* | Martinelli
          Haaland | Jesus* | Mitrovic

          4.0 Keeper | Gordon* | N.Williams | Pereira

      Mendy (Ward)
Cancelo, Robertson, Perisić, Tomiyasu (N. Williams)
      Sterling, Rashford, Willock, Salah (Andreas)
      Haaland, Jesus (Greenwood)

pretty content with it. I was choosing between Wilson + Neto and Jesus + Willock/KDH

I've decided to BB GWK1 and early wildcard. Anyone else fancying this strategy so that BB doesn't dictate any of your transfers in a negative way further down the line?

I don't dislike the BB as much as most FPL managers here or on Twitter. I like to use it in a double GW and worked well for me in the past few seasons (but not always). I understand your rational behind GW 1 BB, but you don't know who is in form (don't rate the pre-season games as high as BPL games in regard to development of form, rather for who is playing and who doesn't).

This just feels so easy way to start with. Cant see a way how you could fall to far in the first 8gameweeks if you start with 3 Chelsea, 3 Pool, 3 City + Jesus + Neto? Very templatish and secure, I think.

      Mendy
      Trent, James, Chilwell, Laporte, Dias
      Salah, Diaz, Neto
      Haaland, Jesus

      Gazzaniga, Pereira, Da Silva, Greenwood

Talk me out of this, please! 🙂

I decided to go with Son instead of Diaz and reduced the value in defence a bit (TAA, James, Doherty, Trippier, N. Williams, it's still 27.5 M) and went with Raya and his deputy in goal

It has to do with team structure. Didn't want to go with Haaland, Jesus and Kane - would most likely require two transfers to increase value in midfield then (and I'm on the side of Kane doesn't score in August)

Because it’s never that easy, and usually at the start of the season someone hauls who virtually no one suspected or has in their teams.

But if just "someone" hauls, then thats not going to hurt, right?

Probably not going to win fpl with this team to be fair. There is not much upside in template, but of course the season is long

Re your original post, I’m not going to talk anyone out of anything.

I just wanted to make the point that none of us actually know what’s going to happen on the weekend of GW1. So for most of the players we think are going to haul could blank and complete unknowns get points instead.

Or, yeah, the template might be right and in which case about 500,000 managers are all in 1st place at the end of GW1.

I have not a clue what will happen.

I have a history of being too aggressive. Probably thats why I'm looking at the template this year.

The issue with 5 big at the back is the following. A) inflexible. B) risk of haemorrhaging value if they don’t perform early. C) defence tends not to do well at the start historically as defences need time to settle. What will you do if Neto isn’t firing. You have no where to move and likewise what if 8.0 mids fire? You have one of them but many will have to or the ability to move to two

        1. FPLGOOD
          • 4 Years

I'm not too concerned about the inflexibility (is that a word?!) since it's likely this team wouldnt need a change for gw2 and in gw3 its quite easy to do example 6.0m def to 4.5m and upgrade Neto.

Neto is anyways so cheap that only looking for 3.5p/gw from the first six (and probably would play Pereira in gw3 anyways, assuming he goes to Fulham). But for me Neto is more or less a dead spot: if he hauls great, if he doesnt then not a huge loss. Basically hoping he just starts!

Personally I think 8.0m mid bracket is a bit overhyped. For me 1 is more than enough for now. More looking forward for those 5.5-7m mids to emerge, I see there is quite a few possibilities (similarly also 5.5-7m forwards).

Have also a bad history about chasing value - and ending up around 100-200k! Trying to beat that this year! 🙂

But good points, appreciate your comments, thanks! And good luck to the season!

          Thats true!

Still feel like they are very likely to outscore any other options - expect City and Pool where there is already a triple-up on both in this team.

Perisic, Trippier and Arsenal defences feel like the threaths maybe. But then again not too concerned at the moment.

Dont really have the love for Ramsdale myself at the moment. Though not very keen on Mendy either - just feel that if James and Chilwell anyways then why not very aggressive?

In my calculations actually Henderson+Meslier rotation was best GK (9m max) solution for first 8 - just dont really trust my "calculations"! 😀

triple chelsea defense could massively backfire. They haven't signed new CBs and they could take time to settle / learn the system. I wouldn't even go double defense let alone triple.

U r also inflexible in midfield. U can have only 1 8m midfielder when there are atleast 10 good 8m+ midfielders.. Bowen, mahrez, maddison saka mount kulu etc... Hence I am going with 2 8m options in midfield.

"Cant see a way how you could fall to far in the first 8gameweeks if you start with 3 Chelsea, 3 Pool, 3 City + Jesus + Neto? Very templatish and secure, I think"

Coverage is a nonsense concept. I can think of about a billion ways this flops. Chelsea and city get off to a flyer with big wins in the first two gameweeks. Scorelines like 3-1 4-1 5-1. Foden, kdb, mahrez, grealish, sterling, mount, havertz alteady amogst the goals, assists and bonus. Some look simply esential. Good thing you had coverage ay. Meanwhile jota as expected starts vs fulham and crystal palace. As youd expect from a liverpool striker that gets 5 ppg he pummels fulham and palace with double digit hauls. Of course all those highly owned bargain defenders you ignored from arsenal, wolves, newcastle and villa are punching above their weight with some early clean sheets and assists. Midprice prospects are making their case with johnson, wilson, coutinho, toney and bowen getting a goal or assist. Oh and just as a final fook you for building a ridiculous inflexible squad canelo has a goal, assist and maximum bonus

          Thanks for the reply!

Still dont see a way how I could fall too behind - regarding your examples there is going to be about five teams that contain Mahrez, Foden, Son, Kane and some cheep backline (which comes away with cleansheets again) 🙂

Those 8m mids should average around 6ppg - something they are not going to do consistently - so its better to have 1 or max 2 only and then switch around. Much easier to get value 6m defenders who need only 5ppg to be worth it and who can do it for long periods as well (to avoid hits).

Good to see different thinking! Though I'm still very confident on my 5 at the back approach 🙂

I di wish you luck bro but just remember in gw3 when you are spending 12 point hits downgrading multiple defenders to best value 4.5 ers so that you can start bringing in the evergrowing list of attackers you want the disputacious dissident warned you

Any way it goes, it will be extremely hard to stick with the plan if you are on the wrong side of it after first 2 gameweeks - always hard to say if your being too reactive or too stubborn at that time. Later its easy to say of course 🙂
