FPL team guides: Aston Villa – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

The three newest additions to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth, were all profiled in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off), so we begin our team-by-team guides with Aston Villa.

It was a season of steady progress at Villa Park in 2021/22, with Aston Villa’s 14th-place finish not terrible given the loss of talisman and captain Jack Grealish (£7.0m) shortly before the campaign commenced, plus the change in management midway through.

With Steven Gerrard taking the reins in Gameweek 12, all of the team statistics featured here are from that point onwards.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

From Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Gameweek 12 onwards, Aston Villa ranked seventh overall for goals scored, with 38 in 27 matches.

The all-important underlying attacking statistics, meanwhile, paint the picture of a mid-table Premier League side, which feels okay given that the most expensive FPL option for Villa costs £7.5m.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

On inspection, Villa’s defence actually performed very well under Gerrard, suggesting their backline can offer value when the fixtures fall kindly in 2022/23.

The recent additions of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) and centre-half Diego Carlos (£5.0m) could potentially tighten them up further, too.

Gerrard often turned to Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) in the number six role last season, also experimenting with Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m), but French international Kamara feels like a significant upgrade, which could have a positive impact on Villa’s clean sheet potential.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23 5

In an appealing opening run, Aston Villa kick start the new season away to newly-promoted Bournemouth, then face Everton and Crystal Palace.

Beyond that, things stiffen up considerably.

In fact, Gerrard’s troops meet four of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 4 and 7, which includes clashes against West Ham United, Arsenal, champions Manchester City and Leicester City.

However, Gameweek 8 looks like the ideal time to ‘hop on’ their assets, with fixtures against Southampton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brentford either side of Chelsea in Gameweek 11.

Anyone see anything about the Spurs/Rangers game beyond the scoreline?

Saw a clip of Perisic doing that same move he does, Kane is going to feast on that service

        Wingbacks = minefield
Kulu is not nailed. Richarlison will eat his minutes.
Kane and Son best duo for FPL.
Big at the back may not be a thing this season

Perisic should be fairly nailed. Sessegnon isn't good enough just yet.

There was some stat that he used to get subbed off at or before 60mins quite often. Also Doherty can play there as well

That's nonsense it happened 3 times in 20 starts and all occured when he was learning the new role same with his cameos. Once he established himself he started week in week out and has been the best attacking wing back in italy for the last 18 months

And I'll take your word for it doherty playing left wing but also perisic can definitely play right wing too he is ampidextrous and he can cover in front 3

I'm sure FFS did an article on Conte and Perisic and it was basically 17 times he didn't make 60 minutes?

You might be looking at the stats after Conte left, under a different manager

No i reviewed his minutes with conte. Its just lacking all the context that completely changes the takeaway.
Yes over the season he played less than 60 around 17 times. Because when the season started perisic was the unwanted attscking mid that didnt fit contes system but they couldnt get rid of him. So conte adapted him to wing back to provide cover/backup/rotation/alternative to ash young who was old but was contes trusted wing back. So for half a season him and young split playing time like 50/50 meaning perisic frequently came on as a sub hence all the cameo appearances. By january perisic had learned and mastered the role and was becoming one of the leagues best players. He started like 20 out of the next 22 games. He was key player for conte once established. Late season injury coupled with inter winning the league way early and having nothing to play for led to a few more cameos at end of season.
Tldr the perisic that conte just bought is the perisic that was nailed under conte and nailed all last season. The perisic that was benched a lot was a player learning a completely new role and rotating with the established first choice

Excellent analysis, thank you. Was gonna put on him anyway as a short term explosive option but definitely keeping now

Pleasure mate im glad my unhealthy amount of football research goes to some use lol.
I do reckon once the games are coming twice a week or more there will be some rotation as he is a key player but also like 34 and probably shouldnt be playing 50 games a season. But if he is match fit for gw1 perfect time to get him

Potentially phenomenal work, but those mins are still all over the place, even with your context

See in first 25 games he started 11, came on as a sub in 12, unused suv twice. Sharing gametime with young adapting to a brand new role under a demanding coach.

From the point that he had proven himself the main man for conte he started 12 out of next 14 usually playing 80+ minutes. He was undroppable and one of the best in the league. Then late season i explained above

They really arent. Commentators marked the january cup games against fiorentina and milan as the games where perisic really showed he was on another level to young and that marked the start of a run of nailed starts and dominant attacking performances that lasted until an injury

          Currently on this:

          Ederson
          Sess Dalot Robertson Trippier
          Bailey Son Sancho
          Kane Haaland Nunez

          4M Williams, Da Silva, Andreas

It's really dependent on Bailey and Sancho meeting their preseason promise though and not much room for manoeuvrability.

Playing around with a Kane, KDB, Salah team, doesn't look too bad. Most likely won't be my gwk1 team though.

          Sanchez
          TAA Robertson Walker Neco
          Salah KDB Neto Bailey
          Jesus Kane

          Steele Taylor Andreas Tanaganga

          Nketiah or Martinelli?

          First RMT of the season.

I am pretty happy with it!

          Sanchez, Steel
          TAA, Zinc, Cancelo, James, Chilwell
          Salah, Mahrez, Neto, Bailey, Andreas
          Kane, Jesus, Plange

Leaves a space for a liv player to jump on quickly.

I had Saka plus Jesus in my draft for ages same logic as yourself, But the lure of cheaper choices ended with me getting rid of Saka. I first looked at Man United midfielders. Then ended up going for the cheap Neto option.

It basically came down to -

            1) Tomiasyu and Saka

            Or

            2) Zinchencko and Countinho/Sancho

            Or

            3) James and Rashford

            Or

            4) Cancelo and Neto

To me on paper the latter looked like the best use of funds. But it was close with 2/3

The disadvantage of not going Saka is no handy route to switch to other 8m midfielders

          Happy with this for now…

          4.5, 4.0
          TAA, Robbo, James, Cancelo (Neco)
          Diaz, Rashford, Neto (Andreas, Dasilva)
          Kane, Haaland, Jesus

Arguably 442 with Saka is more balanced but I prefer Jesus over Saka based on the pre season eye test so far.

            Picking a forward is painful

Even when picking the likes of Ederson and Cancelo together, you're only paying .5 more than this time last year for those two combined

Trent and Robbo still remain 14.5m for circa 400 points!

Each forward is at least .5 overpriced

Two years ago Kane came in at 10.5

Not a single forward is worth their price anymore, now that so many wing mids and wing backs get so far forward and score as much as strikers do. I keep trying to play a 6-4-0 formation but the game won't let me. I would dominate

            Ward watch.

            https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Article/Transferts-nice-reve-de-kasper-schmeichel-leicester/1345066

Having failed to secure the signing of Swiss international Yann Sommer, Nice have turned to Leicester City man Kasper Schmeichel, who is interested in the prospect.

Les Aiglons have been on the lookout for a new starting goalkeeper after the departure of the Franco-Argentine Walter Benítez to PSV Eindhoven, and looked set to sign Sommer before the Borussia Mönchengladbach man decided not to join his compatriot Lucien Favre on the Riviera.

After being approached, the Danish international, now 35, had asked for time to reflect on the offer, and has let Nice know that he would be interested, but only under certain conditions.

With his contract expiring at the end of next season, Schmeichel wants to leave Leicester on good terms, having been at the club for 11 years and notably won the 2016 Premier League title with the Foxes. The aim in the next few days would be to gauge the feasibility of the move with the English side and to be able to ensure the move happens with all parties content. Talks are ongoing, but it is unclear whether they are tending in favour or against the transfer materialising.

The Dane would be the idea profile for Nice, who are looking for an experienced head in a young dressing room, who can also mentor Marcin Bułka after the Pole’s loan move from Paris Saint-Germain was made permanent.

I've been playing a number of years and slightly concerned I'm not going to do very well this year... I currently have 1 premium def TAA... and this has been forced as I'm seeing most teams with3 or 4 premium defenders. I know they did well last year but is it safe to say same again this year? My initial defence was perisic tripper cash johnny and saliba with money spent elsewhere. Why does this seem so risky. I have haaland Jesus Wilson kdb Diaz kulusev saint maximan kovacic in attack and mendy in goal. Anybody any advice for me? Cheers

I don’t agree with your plan but you have some great picks. And I like that you and trying something different and if there is anytime to not go big at the back it is the start of the season. You also may have enough diffs in your attack to compensate for the premium defenders and even if they are not diff as such those with the premium defence can’t have all the attackers you have. Stick to your guns and good luck. Love the Kovacic pick by the way. Just about how many minutes he gets.
