Moving Target

Moving Target – Loic Remy

Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear finally made his first major move into the summer transfer market yesterday evening by snapping up Loic Remy on a season-long loan deal from QPR. The 26-year-old Frenchman – who was previously linked with a move to Tyneside last January – revealed his international ambitions played a significant part in the switch, with next summer’s World Cup in Brazil clearly on his radar.

“I’m very happy to be a Newcastle player. It will be a huge honour to play for such a big club. I was very flattered by the Club’s interest in me back in January and also very happy that they showed interest in me again this summer. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United. I am focussed on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Remy’s career began in 2006 but the forward failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, making just 12 appearances over a season and a half at the club. Farmed out on loan to Lens midway through the 2007/08 campaign, Remy produced three goals and two assists in 10 matches, with his eye for goal persuading Nice to fork out a club record €8m in June 2008.

Remy’s impact was immediate in his new surrounds, with 11 goals and three assists in 32 appearances across his debut season before he racked up 14 goals and five assists in 34 matches the following year. After scoring once in two matches at the start of 2010/11, he was transferred to Marseille for €15m, though he was forced to undergo stringent medical tests after an initial assessment indicated he was suffering from a heart defect. Having been given the all-clear, Remy flourished in his first couple of league campaigns, producing 27 goals and 10 assists from 60 Ligue 1 matches but his final season at the club was far less successful. Demoted to the bench, he made just two starts and 12 sub appearances, notching a single goal, before QPR came calling back in January.

Despite dropping down to the Championship at the end of last term, Remy was quick to settle at Loftus Road. Although he turned out just 14 times for Harry Redknapp’s side, he still managed to finish the season as the R’s top scorer, having found the net on six occasions.

Remy has also represented his national side on 18 occasions and has produced four goals and an assist for Les Bleus.

The Prospects

Undoubtedly, the Magpies are in dire need for extra firepower for the season ahead. Alan Pardew’s side scored just 19 goals in 18 games following Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea back in January and found the net in only three of their final eight league matches, ironically clinching their league safety in a 2-1 win over Remy’s QPR in Gameweek 37.

Having failed to get his man first time around, Pardew was clearly delighted to finally clinch the Frenchman’s signature and his words suggest the new boy will be regarded as a key player for the Magpies in the upcoming campaign:

“Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us. He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals. It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

Pardew’s formation for the season ahead will be key as to how we assess the new boy’s potential. The Magpies boss has utilised 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems over the summer so far, though a 4-3-3 also looks viable, with Remy perhaps fielded on the right and Hatem Ben Arfa on the opposite flank, allowing Papiss Cisse to retain the lone forward slot. Ideally, though, a central berth is clearly the best scenario – a reverse out of position role out wide will dent Remy’s appeal, with Ben Arfa or even Moussa Sissoko appearing on our radars, should the latter get his wish and return to the role in “the hole” behind Cisse.

Priced at 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 by The Sun Dream Team, Remy has been handed a price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) earlier this afternoon – less than Cisse’s 8.5 yet more than Yoan Gouffran at 6.5 amongst Newcastle’s frontline options. One factor which may fall in his favour could be spot-kick duties; with Ba now departed and Cisse failing to impress from the spot, Remy may vie with Ben Arfa in the penalty pecking order.

Looking at the opening schedule, while a Gameweek 1 trip to City is far from favourable, Newcastle’s following four fixtures (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) offer plenty reason to be optimistic. The downside, however, is Remy is currently struggling with a calf complaint and, while Pardew is still hopeful he will make the bench in time for the season opener at the Etihad, the Magpies boss has also admitted he is still on the lookout for more options up front, with the club still linked with a bid for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis.

While there’s no doubt a role alongside Cisse would make Remy a viable alternative, it may take a few weeks until we are afforded a proper assessment of his potential. With a lack of pre-season training and more new signings perhaps imminent, it’s yet to be established whether Remy has been earmarked for a wide role – such a scenario would prove a major deterrent, with far more secure, central options in the mid-price bracket elsewhere.

Is Crouch a viable option instead of Anelka? I dont see the fuss and for 0.5 Crouch's presence/threat in the box seems far superior.

Stoke have an okay start bar GWK4 but lets face it, its stoke :).

In 2nd half. None Chelsea players played well. The only player that I think did the best in Chelsea team 2nd half was Essien. Most other Chelsea players made mistake. Cech was lucky that Di Maria and Ronaldo didn't add more goals.

"Could" have a shocker. Debuchy seems nailed on and as a full-back, could have some attacking returns. Swansea have much tougher fixtures than Newcastle for the first few GWs. Would Riether be a better prospect? And I don't think there is a need to upgrade Brayford, I'm never going to play him.

Very true. Personally I don't like using trasfers on defenders, so try and keep a long term view... Riether would be bettter to start off with maybe.

That front 8 is absolutely terrifying by the way, shame you have to bench one each week

Good point about wasting transfers on defenders since they're not going to get you big points. Debuchy and Riether are much of a much. May have to draw up a table and compare fixtures to settle it. Planning on doing Lukaku > Bony after the double since he'll be Swanswea main striker and has been linking up well with Michu in pre-season.

    Hart (Gazzaniga)

    Ivanovic Chester Turner Clyne Collins

    Hazard Walcott ( __ __ __ = 17.5 mil)

    RVP Soldado Anelka

For the remaining midfield spots I was thinking of Nolan, Snodgrass and a bench warmer but I'm .5 mil short. Thanks in advance for any suggestions 🙂

Ughhh, after watching the enormous Lukaku fail to win a single header I'm really torn over him. I guess we should accept he was up against the full Real back-line. The fact all of Chelsea's goals come from the midfield make we want to double up on defenders+hazard for the DGW. The damn Luiz rumors don't help my doubts either.

    Morning gents,

It's been quite difficult to find a balanced team with Van Persie, but I think I've finally found one I'm happy with.

    Szczesny / Boruc

    Toure / Coleman / Collins / Brayford / Chester

    Walcott / Hazard / Coutinho / Mirallas / Thomas

Van Persie / Lukaku / Anelka

If Anelka isn't suitable I could downgrade Boruc to a 4.0 and bring in J Rodriguez instead.

    Any thoughts are appreciated. 🙂

    Cheers.

IMO, downgrade Szczesny to Migs and then upgrade Anelka. Also, is it worth having RVP in from the start? My plans are to get him after GW3.

Szczesny and Mignolet are both 5.5

I've gone with Van Persie from the start because I don't want to take any hits early on or use my wildcard unnecessarily. Planning your transfers may also prevent you from bringing in any form players (bandwagons) that catch on quickly.

I think if you're set on saving your WC until later then RVP in from the start is the way to go. Good team that - only question marks for me would be Coleman (is he nailed on?) & Szczesny (as an Arsenal fan I'm just not convinced by him or our defence).

Perhaps Foster/Manonne (save points) & Lescott/Zaba given MCY have great fixtures and those two should play, especially with Nasty out for 6 weeks?

Oh ahah i didn't know they were the same price, all good aha

And also the thing with me, I have lots of DGW players in my side (Luiz, Hazard, Benteke and Lukaku) so after GW3 I will be looking to bring RVP in for the lowest performing striker. And also United's first 3 matches are SWA, che, LIV. Even though I am assured that he will score in those matches, he may drop in price. I will gamble on it and then pick him up after.

    Morning chaps.

I'm not normally one to go heavy at the back, but given I'm all set on going with a post GW3 wildcard, I think this 11 all have explosive potential and the non-CHE players all have great fixtures for GW1-3, so I shouldn't need to transfer any out (barring an injury)...

    Hart
    Baines, Terry, Zabaleta
    Hazard, Walcott, Mirallas, Nolan
    Lukaku, Giroud, Dzeko

    Davis, Thomas, Chester, Parr

I think all are pretty nailed on with the exception of Dzeko & Lukaku - I expect both to start GW1, but if neither start/perform in GW1 then I would consider a hit -> something like Soldado & JRod.

    Any feedback appreciated - cheers!

Cheers - I did think of that, but I'm not sure where I'd use the 1m up front. Perhaps Giroud -> Soldado, but I actually fancy Giroud to score well early on, and I'm not sure Soldado will start GW1.

Also, having Migs means I'd need to play him for avl & MUN, rather than Hart for car & HUL

I like this team a lot, I can't really fault it at all for what uou're planning on doing.

What's your reason for wildcarding in Gameweek 3? Is it to chase value over the international break?

Change of strategy this year - saved it for DGWs in previous year and feel that it wasn't really worth it. You normally get plenty of notice for DGWs so can prepare for it in advance, leaving the WC only a slight advantage. Using it early should mean plenty of team value rises (most players play it early) and catching those early bandwagons for free. Post GW3 gives the international break and provides the best time to get some MUN cover (thinking of Kagawa and RVP)....

Pretty good I'd say. A few risks in there for me though:

      1) Evra - not sure he's worth 6.5m with MUN's early fixtures
      2) Negredo - like all the City attackers, question marks over whether he'll start. I've gone for Dzeko, which could just as easily backfire mind!
      3) Soldado - looks a great pick, just not sure he'll start GW1 - international miles away, jet lag, lack of training with Spurs.

de Gea (6.0) and Toure (5.0) would be 1.0 cheaper than Mignolet and Evra.

Man, I wonder if triple Chelsea is even worth it. It was mostly Hazard and Ivanovic getting the big points in last season's opener right? I only had Mata and my total for the week was absolute crap. I gained back a lot of ground by the end of the season though. Almost caught up to AK...Thoroughly regret not getting Ivanovic though. I kept telling my friend to get him over Cole. He didn't listen to me either xD

RVP is due for a season-ending injury in Round 4, once everyone has blown their wildcards and picked him up.

we'd play wait and see with any high priced player from a team with a new manager(that has been performing poorly in preseason that too). Wait and see with him.. he'll be in the top scorers for sure but wont significantly outscore anyone by much imo

Yeah, it's just when I have my balanced team, and compare it with RVP with a weaker defense. The RVP team comes out 7 points higher...

Life without RVP is possible though. I think those with a high rank were fine without him. Suarez carried them though I think.

    Thoughts on this lot:

    Migs Harper
    Cole Coleman Collins Shaw Brayford
    Hazard Coutinho Oscar Walcott Nolan
    Benteke Dzeko Rodriguez

Plan is to do Oscar -> Mirallas in GW2 and then look at probably Cole -> City defender the following week.

Have avoided going for a 4.5 bench fodder because I think the eighth attacker is going to be important given the likely rotation minefield with City, Chelsea and probably others. With this in mind will rotate Nolan and Rodriguez (based primarily on whoever is playing at home) which will give me a solid backup for if/when Dzeko (or anyone else) misses out.
