Moving Target

Moving Target – Loic Remy

Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear finally made his first major move into the summer transfer market yesterday evening by snapping up Loic Remy on a season-long loan deal from QPR. The 26-year-old Frenchman – who was previously linked with a move to Tyneside last January – revealed his international ambitions played a significant part in the switch, with next summer’s World Cup in Brazil clearly on his radar.

“I’m very happy to be a Newcastle player. It will be a huge honour to play for such a big club. I was very flattered by the Club’s interest in me back in January and also very happy that they showed interest in me again this summer. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United. I am focussed on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Remy’s career began in 2006 but the forward failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, making just 12 appearances over a season and a half at the club. Farmed out on loan to Lens midway through the 2007/08 campaign, Remy produced three goals and two assists in 10 matches, with his eye for goal persuading Nice to fork out a club record €8m in June 2008.

Remy’s impact was immediate in his new surrounds, with 11 goals and three assists in 32 appearances across his debut season before he racked up 14 goals and five assists in 34 matches the following year. After scoring once in two matches at the start of 2010/11, he was transferred to Marseille for €15m, though he was forced to undergo stringent medical tests after an initial assessment indicated he was suffering from a heart defect. Having been given the all-clear, Remy flourished in his first couple of league campaigns, producing 27 goals and 10 assists from 60 Ligue 1 matches but his final season at the club was far less successful. Demoted to the bench, he made just two starts and 12 sub appearances, notching a single goal, before QPR came calling back in January.

Despite dropping down to the Championship at the end of last term, Remy was quick to settle at Loftus Road. Although he turned out just 14 times for Harry Redknapp’s side, he still managed to finish the season as the R’s top scorer, having found the net on six occasions.

Remy has also represented his national side on 18 occasions and has produced four goals and an assist for Les Bleus.

The Prospects

Undoubtedly, the Magpies are in dire need for extra firepower for the season ahead. Alan Pardew’s side scored just 19 goals in 18 games following Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea back in January and found the net in only three of their final eight league matches, ironically clinching their league safety in a 2-1 win over Remy’s QPR in Gameweek 37.

Having failed to get his man first time around, Pardew was clearly delighted to finally clinch the Frenchman’s signature and his words suggest the new boy will be regarded as a key player for the Magpies in the upcoming campaign:

“Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us. He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals. It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

Pardew’s formation for the season ahead will be key as to how we assess the new boy’s potential. The Magpies boss has utilised 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems over the summer so far, though a 4-3-3 also looks viable, with Remy perhaps fielded on the right and Hatem Ben Arfa on the opposite flank, allowing Papiss Cisse to retain the lone forward slot. Ideally, though, a central berth is clearly the best scenario – a reverse out of position role out wide will dent Remy’s appeal, with Ben Arfa or even Moussa Sissoko appearing on our radars, should the latter get his wish and return to the role in “the hole” behind Cisse.

Priced at 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 by The Sun Dream Team, Remy has been handed a price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) earlier this afternoon – less than Cisse’s 8.5 yet more than Yoan Gouffran at 6.5 amongst Newcastle’s frontline options. One factor which may fall in his favour could be spot-kick duties; with Ba now departed and Cisse failing to impress from the spot, Remy may vie with Ben Arfa in the penalty pecking order.

Looking at the opening schedule, while a Gameweek 1 trip to City is far from favourable, Newcastle’s following four fixtures (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) offer plenty reason to be optimistic. The downside, however, is Remy is currently struggling with a calf complaint and, while Pardew is still hopeful he will make the bench in time for the season opener at the Etihad, the Magpies boss has also admitted he is still on the lookout for more options up front, with the club still linked with a bid for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis.

While there’s no doubt a role alongside Cisse would make Remy a viable alternative, it may take a few weeks until we are afforded a proper assessment of his potential. With a lack of pre-season training and more new signings perhaps imminent, it’s yet to be established whether Remy has been earmarked for a wide role – such a scenario would prove a major deterrent, with far more secure, central options in the mid-price bracket elsewhere.

    Snoddy V Mirallas 2011-2012

    Snoddy

    - More involved greater touch rate
    - Distributes the ball far more
    - Defends end of story
    - is involved in set pieces

    Mirallas
    - is more of a goal threat than Snoddy statistically but not by much

Sorry if i had a touch more time id quote stats

Mirallas will be more explosive though and he's price will rise really quick.. so hop onto him first and then swap one of your other mids(Oscar etc) to Snoddy later

dont know my thoughts on silva this year. could be rotated more than ever, not a huge goal threat and could possibly be assisting the assister. wondering if people like nolan, mirallas and sess could score more points...

Silva and Yaya make the team. Just not the same without either of them. Can't see Silva being rotated too much. Maybe if Isco made came, but that's not the case.

He'll have plenty to finish off his great chances, and he had 2 great seasons these past 2 years. Last season seemed weak because he was injured for a bit of it and City scored something like 30 goals less, yet he still managed to score just 2 goals less than the title winning season and 5 less goals. He's solid.

II like your team generally speaking. If not Coutinho than who? Silva?

Your front 3 are all potnetially great. If only you could find an extra 1.0 mil to squeeze Soldado in over Giroud as you already have Wally for Arsenal? Depends when you are playing the WC too?

Since you're just keeping this team for two weeks, it's a bit of a punt really. Problem is that most will judge the team for its solidity when it's more a gamble on Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool's first two fixtures.

      Finally.

I have 9 of them. 10 if you count the obligatory CHS defender (you have Cole, I have Luiz).

I'm awarding you 8/10 and this is the best team I've seen so far.

      The only issues are:

      No Nolan
      The uncertainty over Jecko.

                Mignolet, Lewis

                Ivan, Cole, Collins, Brayford, Shaw
                Hazard, Silva, Gerrard, Mirallas, Snodgrass
                Giroud, Aspas, JRod

I need to get rid of a liverpool attacker still but its very much a work in progress subject to change.

That was my original idea yes.

I played it early last season to gain value. Only made 0.9m and ended up doing badly for 3-5 weeks after. Did manage to get in Michu etc but the rest was a waste of a WC.

What I'm trying to say is that many made that sort of money in a week without WC.

WC prob best kept for injuries and if you have all the wrong players(which seldom happens).

Yes, I am generally wary of a planned wildcard, but apparently around 50% of the top 50k did it in the first 3 gameweeks last season, so it's probably worth at least thinking about - as many did as didn't.

Yep, Jim. My confidence suddenly returned when I stuck him in the team. He gets 6-9 points every week and I'd be stupid to ignore him.

I'm counting on a few new Michus to come along and take the places of the pricy players that no one can fit in to their squads.

Boruc->4m keeper and re invest the 500k(maybe upgrade JT to Kim/Koren)

I downgrade one of Cole/Mertesuckher and upgrade Anelka if possible.

If one of Soldado/Bony hit the ground running you would want to get them in and it would mean a major reshuffle I think.

I'm not a big fan of Dzeko, Anelka and Thomas but that is a strong team. The RVP teams are looking very good these days and they are making a persuasive case to include the dutchman in our GW1 squads. I'm slowly coming around to the idea.

Well if scores in the first 2-3 gwks, which as we all know is very likely, his price will go up and it will make it even harder to get him in.

I'd prefer to start with him in and try to build a team around him.

Love it, if Bale goes one of the best non-RVP teams I have seen personally. I would do Lukaku instead of Lambert and maybe Ward instead of Parr, word from a Palace fan on here that's who he would get if a reliable 4.0 starter is needed.

Well you can't ignore the two CHS cleenies they are going to get in week 1.

Secondly, Luiz goes in week 2 leaving me with Mertslacker and four ubers. After sitting on the edge of the top 1 k last year, I lost ground through those Man U cleenies.

Started off last season playing one 5.0 + 4 ubers. The winner from two seasons ago did this.

      Thoughts?

And that is the point. Baines at 7.5 is better than Mirallas at 7.5 but you do need to consider the other def / mid to balance things out.

The other way to understand that in real terms Baines costs more than Mirallas is to look at the base price of each classification. The cheapest defender available is 4.0 and the cheapest midfielder is 4.5.

Therefore Baines is £3.5m more than the base and Mirallas just £3m more. It is on this basis that really you should only compare players prices within the same position classification or compare a defender costing £0.5m less than a midfielder.

Even then you need to establish what talent is available at those price ranges. For example Collins at £4.5m appears a way better selection than any midfielder at £5m. The more times you can achieve this with cheaper defenders over midfielders enables you to spend more in midfield and upfront to get the big hitters. To complicate things further there is a good option at 5.0 (Toure) and a number of good options at 5.5 (Lescott, Arsenal defenders) and even extending this to the 1st GW with the Chelsea double), to me selecting Baines is not the value option that you may have inititally thought.

I think most have Kagawa in the back of their mind. Just waiting until his fixtures clear up and if he is played in the hole. Also with so many quality midfield options he isnt seen as necessary from the start e.g. Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho, Silva, Mirallas, Snodgrass etc

      good keeper rotation
defence solid but both Kolarov and Luiz could be off even Bale for that matter.
Faye i hope is bench fodder as is very yellow card prone.
Benteke is a huge risk - very costly and playing for a team that'll be down near the bottom could put the money on him towards someone better or downgrade and upgrade elsewhere.
De Bruyne going to be starved of action too i feel.

    Bony / Lukaku / Kone

Like my keeper rotations, defence and mids but possibly missing one big hitter up top? Maybe downgrade either Bony or Kone or after GW1 switch out Lukaku for someone i dont know....maybe a Berbatov or Lambert or Anelka or Hooper as a differential. For the price the paid sure Norwich will have to play him...and would work well with Wolfy...

Possibly missing a star striker, but with that midfield you'll struggle to get one. Personally need some reassuring performances form Silva before I take the plunge, but if 2011/12 version tunrs up this season then you won't miss that striker. Without the star name your strikers still have great potential, but noe of them risk free at this stage.

Thanks, after GW1 will possibly downgrade Ivan to a 5.5 frees up 1 mil to upgrade Kone to a 8.0. banking on soem good points generated from the mids but always great if your forwards giving you more than 2 pts. Don't know whop to get in for Kone though, have a good feeling about Giroud this season but dont want to double up on Arsenal up top.

Any one considering a man u winger if one was to have a great game in the CS this weekend? E.g. Nani plays and bags 2 goals and an assist, becomes tempting at 7.5 right??

agreed although the thought of Zaha nailing the wing and at 6.5m he seems to be the cheaper and better punt. just depends if Moyes will start him or give him enough mins, he has had a brilliant pre-season thus far 😀

Think I have finally settled on my team but with a couple of doubts over starters.

    Foster (Boruc)
    Collins, Youre, Coleman (Turner, Brayford)
    Snodgrass, Tonev, Walcott, Hazard (Mirallas)
    RvP, Lukaku, Dzeko/ Berbatov..

Issues with Tonev, Lukaku and Dzeko.. but I am hoping they get the nod..

    Hows it looking...

Pretty good effort. Tonev would be my only worry. Playing the DGW Lukaku will see some game time & got doubkle the time to do some damage so think hes certain to get in on some action. Dzeko is a strange one, last season barely played or always impact sub, Pello seems to like him but hes got to now juggle twice the players of last season so hes at an even great risk...

Morning all FPL how are you today?

I didn't want to but I have changed my lineup (Again!!)

    Boruc (Vorm)
Collins - Ivan - Mert (Parr / Brayford)
Hazard (c) - Oscar (vc) - Mirallas - Snod (Kim)
    Soldado - RVP - Anelka

Soldado was too big a temptation for me, nailed on over ade and defoe any day of the week IMO changed my formation to a 3-4-3 and gone for a Ivan - Hazard - Oscar for the DGW.

    what you guys think? 🙂

I dont believe lukaku to be the better pick especially after last nights performance!

I agree im torn to not have wally in there as he scored so many points last time, but oscar and hazard for the DGW then I will change it up.

again Benteke I did have him in my previous team but he has hard fixtures, i can see him scoring maybe 1 over the course of the 2 games.

Dzeko costs just over half of what RVP does, and he will score more goals than him this season.

Giroud is a little bit more expensive, but should also score more than RVP.

RVP is not the messiah. He's a very naughty boy.

3 seasons ago, RVP scored only 18 goals.

I see Silva creeping into many teams . Im not convinced , it strikes me as a desperate attempt to get coverage , simply because he starts most games.
I dont see much upside tbh. He will get a few assists no doubt and the occasional goal , but he just one of many in a star studded team.
Think i would rather have Dzeko and risk him being a sub sometimes . He more potential for some big hauls

I dunno. He's an elite assist player, and if Man City are a better attacking side this year, he could get more goals. If he plays enough minutes I see him as potentially on the level of a Mata, fantasy wise.

This is exactly the logic he's talking about.

Better attacking side DOES NOT EQUATE more fantasy pts.

Better side = points being shared among more players.

Aguero Dzeko Negredo Jovetic Silva Navas Nasri Milner Yaya Fernandinho etc..

I suppose so, but two years ago City were good, Silva was solid fantasy wise. Last year, City struggled, Silva struggled. If he gets the minutes, and City gets the goals, I don't see any reason he can't duplicate or exceed his performance from their title season. For only 9 million, I'm willing to take the gamble over Coutinho/Michu, at least at first given the fixtures.

I also think that his stats last year indicated that he underperformed, assist wise. If City are a better team, that helps him.

I have Silva in over Coutinho at the moment (although it's tight).

It's partly down to fixtures. Week 3 I would rather have Silva at home to Hull than Coutinho at Man United, especially when I have 2 other Liverpool players in my team at the moment as well.

    Cech (Given)

    G. Johnson Zabaleta Collins (Clyne, Chester)

    Silva Mirallas Walcott Hazard (Colback)

    Berbatov Sturridge Lambert

Cech to be transferred for Hart after GW 1 is a definite move, then Harte for probably De Gea around GW 6-7. I reckon Bony could have a very good return in an attacking Swansea side, have it in mind to bring him in once their fixture run improves from GW 7

And yes, I do realise I am getting ridiculously and ludicrously ahead of myself......I do so every year.

Ok Thomas is in, deffo a better option to Colback alright.

Cech is only in for the doubleweek, then to be replaced by Hart. I just feel there's value in the expensive goalies early doors with the way the fixtures fall, then will go cheaper again for GW 5 and put in Mignolet.

        That'll give me a run of fixtures for GKs of;

        CECH - Hull (h), Villa (h),
        HART - Cardiff (a), Hull (h), Stoke (a),
        MIGNOLET - Shampton (h), Sunderland (a), Palace (h), Newcastle (a), West Brom (h)

...in the first 9 game weeks.

I will get RVP in with my WC, just taking a chance without him at the start and praying he has trouble scoring early doors during Uniteds tough opening run of games, most likely wishful thinking but how and ever..

It's a bit different which is no bad thing, and could do very well.

Agree with Jafa that Colback isn't the best choice, would throw Pennant in there or even Meyler is supposedly looking alright in preseason.

I'd definitely question your plan to spend 2 transfers on your goalkeeper slot, and also think if you're spending big just get a non-playing 4m backup.
