Moving Target

Moving Target – Loic Remy

Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear finally made his first major move into the summer transfer market yesterday evening by snapping up Loic Remy on a season-long loan deal from QPR. The 26-year-old Frenchman – who was previously linked with a move to Tyneside last January – revealed his international ambitions played a significant part in the switch, with next summer’s World Cup in Brazil clearly on his radar.

“I’m very happy to be a Newcastle player. It will be a huge honour to play for such a big club. I was very flattered by the Club’s interest in me back in January and also very happy that they showed interest in me again this summer. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United. I am focussed on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Remy’s career began in 2006 but the forward failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, making just 12 appearances over a season and a half at the club. Farmed out on loan to Lens midway through the 2007/08 campaign, Remy produced three goals and two assists in 10 matches, with his eye for goal persuading Nice to fork out a club record €8m in June 2008.

Remy’s impact was immediate in his new surrounds, with 11 goals and three assists in 32 appearances across his debut season before he racked up 14 goals and five assists in 34 matches the following year. After scoring once in two matches at the start of 2010/11, he was transferred to Marseille for €15m, though he was forced to undergo stringent medical tests after an initial assessment indicated he was suffering from a heart defect. Having been given the all-clear, Remy flourished in his first couple of league campaigns, producing 27 goals and 10 assists from 60 Ligue 1 matches but his final season at the club was far less successful. Demoted to the bench, he made just two starts and 12 sub appearances, notching a single goal, before QPR came calling back in January.

Despite dropping down to the Championship at the end of last term, Remy was quick to settle at Loftus Road. Although he turned out just 14 times for Harry Redknapp’s side, he still managed to finish the season as the R’s top scorer, having found the net on six occasions.

Remy has also represented his national side on 18 occasions and has produced four goals and an assist for Les Bleus.

The Prospects

Undoubtedly, the Magpies are in dire need for extra firepower for the season ahead. Alan Pardew’s side scored just 19 goals in 18 games following Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea back in January and found the net in only three of their final eight league matches, ironically clinching their league safety in a 2-1 win over Remy’s QPR in Gameweek 37.

Having failed to get his man first time around, Pardew was clearly delighted to finally clinch the Frenchman’s signature and his words suggest the new boy will be regarded as a key player for the Magpies in the upcoming campaign:

“Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us. He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals. It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

Pardew’s formation for the season ahead will be key as to how we assess the new boy’s potential. The Magpies boss has utilised 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems over the summer so far, though a 4-3-3 also looks viable, with Remy perhaps fielded on the right and Hatem Ben Arfa on the opposite flank, allowing Papiss Cisse to retain the lone forward slot. Ideally, though, a central berth is clearly the best scenario – a reverse out of position role out wide will dent Remy’s appeal, with Ben Arfa or even Moussa Sissoko appearing on our radars, should the latter get his wish and return to the role in “the hole” behind Cisse.

Priced at 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 by The Sun Dream Team, Remy has been handed a price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) earlier this afternoon – less than Cisse’s 8.5 yet more than Yoan Gouffran at 6.5 amongst Newcastle’s frontline options. One factor which may fall in his favour could be spot-kick duties; with Ba now departed and Cisse failing to impress from the spot, Remy may vie with Ben Arfa in the penalty pecking order.

Looking at the opening schedule, while a Gameweek 1 trip to City is far from favourable, Newcastle’s following four fixtures (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) offer plenty reason to be optimistic. The downside, however, is Remy is currently struggling with a calf complaint and, while Pardew is still hopeful he will make the bench in time for the season opener at the Etihad, the Magpies boss has also admitted he is still on the lookout for more options up front, with the club still linked with a bid for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis.

While there’s no doubt a role alongside Cisse would make Remy a viable alternative, it may take a few weeks until we are afforded a proper assessment of his potential. With a lack of pre-season training and more new signings perhaps imminent, it’s yet to be established whether Remy has been earmarked for a wide role – such a scenario would prove a major deterrent, with far more secure, central options in the mid-price bracket elsewhere.

        Soldado instead of who?

Looks decent.. not sure about Noble & Arteta personally but they are on pens. Would rather see Mirallas / Nolan than Arteta.

Not sure Jaaskelainen is worth the cash personally, think I'd save £0.5m and go with Foster there as he and Boruc rotate v well. Maybe use the extra to upgrade Zabaleta to a Chelsea defender for the DGW.

Ello lads, any help to RMT would be greatly appreciated. First team is no RVP and would either WC or use tranfers to get him in around GW 3-4 or the second option where i have him from the start.

    Cech

    Coleman, Collins, Mertesaker

    Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Snodgrass,

    Giroud, Soldado, Lakuku

    Boruc, Thomas, Parr, Turner (Nor)

After GW 2-3 Cech, Mertesaker, Lakaku, Giroud become Boruc, O'Shea, RVP and Anelka. Weak at back i know but trying to save cash there for more grunt in the middle and up front OR,

    Mannone

    Coleman, O'Shea, Collins

    Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Snodgrass,

    RVP, Soldado, Anelka

    Boruc, Thomas, Parr, Turner (Nor)

    Any thoughts?

First RMT of the season after a bit of lurking:

    Boruc / Davis
    Cole / Toure / Collins / Chester / Parr
    Hazard / Walcott / Coutinho / Mirallas / Thomas
    RVP / Anelka / Lukaku

Leaves me with 0.5M and I don't know what to do with that at the moment. Maybe Toure > Mertesacker or something.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Looks good on the whole I think.

I don't like Davis. His high ownership looks like a good way to lose £0.1 - 0.2m early on, although if you never get rid of him, I suppose it doesn't matter too much.

I'd use the £0.5m to upgrade Parr to

I just can't see the logic in selecting Lukaku, despite the DGW.

I just can't see him playing more than 90 minutes what with Mourinho's public support of Torres. Demba will also be given more than enough chances to prove himself particularly in the first several games of the season.

    Morning,

I am having quite a dilemma with Chelsea's forward line....will Torres be given the nod? I read an article where mourinho was talking about rebuilding him, do we think that's a hint that he will be starting no1. Then you have Lukaku coming back after a productive season at the hawthorns........and Ba, I must admit.....I think his time will be severely limited this season.

I don't really wanna gamble on the first double game week, what's everyone else's thoughts? Lukaku, Torres or stead clear and why?

    Cheers

From being dead set against having RVP in my team, I'm now struggling to go without. This is my trail of thought for any floating voters. Sorry to bore others who have mind their mind up either way.

Not owning RVP frees up so much cash and with Bale seemingly off too, you can more or less pick who you want. £14m is a serious amount of money, but would I have him at £13m? Of course. Can I pick a good team with him at £14m? Of course. My problem comes with GW4, Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

I think if you're planning to wildcard in GW3 then not owning RVP from the off is completely fine, you can enjoy the first 3 GW with Man Utd having difficult fixtures and the WC should help you get off to a flyer. I'm going to try and keep the WC longer this season though and at the moment, I find myself planning a way to get RVP in for GW4 which uses a minimum of 2 or more realistically 3 transfers. I also feel that there are enough good, mid-price midfielders to help justify the decision with the likes of Nolan, Mirallas, Ben Arfa, Snodgrass/Fer among others all worthy inclusions.

Other players will show themselves to be great fantasy assets and I don't want to find myself taking plenty of hits early on. If he does well in the first 3 GW, his price will rocket by £0.3m during the international break before GW4 and I wouldn't feel comfortable transferring him in before the international break was finished to take advantage of the price rises.

Therefore, while I concede I'll perhaps be a little worse off after GW3 than somebody who goes without him from the start, I'm looking at the first 5-6 GW as a whole and hoping I'll be well placed in GW4.

Don't get lured into worrying about anything after the first 3 gameweeks I guess. So much could happen in that time with injuries and form that you might not see RVP as the priority you do now. Plus if you have three heavy hitting midfielder then you can downgrade one of them to fodder to finance the RVP move in two transfers assuming one of your strikers is at least 9m.

Well yeah, I mean some people are looking at the first 3 GW but what I'm saying is that I'm looking at the first 5-6.

Yeah, your suggestion is the only way I can see to do it in 2 transfers but relies on another good option at 5m becoming available in midfield. I'm not sure, mind isn't made up but just the way I'm thinking at the moment. I'm yet to read a convincing argument that he shouldn't be included, unless a WC in played in GW3.

Following on from Spinynorman's post on the last page.

Torres did score a fair amount of goals last season.

Ba is a pretty decent striker too.

Yes, Torres may play in the Spanish friendly & not start the following league game, but he could very well start the 2 DGW game.

Why do people think Lukaku is suddenly number 1?

Cause he looks a bit like Drogba? And Jose liked Drogba?

😆 loopers I tell ya, loopers!!

But what people seem to be forgetting is that Chelsea have 3 top strikers gunning for the lone striker role.

From all the sounds Mourinho has been making, Torres is his number 1 striker. If you're going to gamble on a Chelsea striker (and going for a Chelsea striker is a huge one) Torres is the better option.

Going for a player who was absent for all of last season is just blind DGW optimism.

Also it's the start of the season, if Torres or whoever starts bangs in a couple of goals against Hull then I don't why he wouldn't start against Villa as well. Does Mourinho normally rotate players like a lunatic or was that just what FSW did?

Keep trying to squeeze Benteke in but it is proving very difficult. I have no doubts that he is capable of scoring against Arsenal and Chelsea and last season I would have been very scared to go in to a double without him.

The only strategy I can see that includes Benteke is to prepare for the early wildcard. Get as many points out of the double as possible, possibly stick with some of the same players for GW2, then we should be able to see the early bandwagons and starting cheap players.

    Thoughts?

I just think if you're going to go for it with the double you might as well stick as many in as you can. I usually use my wildcard quite early anyway, even though I was planning on holding on to it a bit longer this year. I think I'll just stick with RVP for the timebeing.

To punt or not to punt? That is the question.

In the front three, there are many great unsafe options:
Dzeko - with price and potential to explode but unknown game time
Soldado - great player will do well, but will you get him from the start or let him ease in to the league first?
Sturridge/aspas - health issues for Sturridge will effect both players, thou both can do great
Lukaku - the unknown ness of the Chelsea front line may hit you hard
Anelka - very cheap and explosive but old and not assured starts

How many of those excellent options will you go for?
    One punt? Two? Three?
How many of your front line options will be nailed on known commodities like Rvp, giroud, benteke, etc.?

      this is tough this season.

Viable to go for 3 big hitters, no RVP. Giroud/Bony/Benteke for eg

Also viable to do RVP and 2 punts like RVP/Dzeko/Anelka

The difference between the 2 is probably not much in terms of points (bearing in mind if a punt doesn't work you adjust), but in my opinion the latter strategy is a little better because RVP is a captaincy option week in week out

Ivanovic has started Chelsea's last 3 pre-season games

Taking into account the Spain international (for Azpi) as well, is it safe to say Ivanovic will be involved in both Chelsea games?

Unlikely to repeat last years GW1 exploits but he always has that added goal potential

DGW1 provides a possibilty of having 4 players play twice.

1 - Benteke; crap fixtures followed by a big fat blank
      2 - Chelsea's 11 is very difficult to predict

So, using your WC to benefit from this DGW is dumb & very short-sighted.

If saved for another DGW, you will have more teams playing in it, plus you'd know the starting 11's.
