The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

City’s Bosnian striker makes the most of his cameo role by netting City’s winner against a plucky Palace, while Hull’s midfield quarterback hits double figures on a day that saw Fantasy managers plunged into panic by the absence of captaincy candidate, Wayne Rooney.

The Game Changer

Man City’s team sheet was the focus of our morning anxiety and, while Rooney’s omission eventually overshadowed Manuel Pellegrini’s reshuffles, the City lineup was to prove pivotal in our Saturday scoring. With the likes of Yaya Toure and Alvaro Negredo absent, it was left to Edin Dzeko to make the difference as a brave Palace rearguard was eventually breached by the Bosnian’s decisive strike.

Subject of our “Differentials” article and my own pre-amble this morning, Dzeko’s intervention will have provided rewards for a minority of Fantasy managers who took a risk on the City striker.

As my own ramblings mentioned, Dzeko looks to be a one-week proposition – unlikely to feature in Wednesday’s starting lineup, he was a trade who had to produce today to justify the gamble. With maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus likely to follow, a nine point return, potentially doubled with the captaincy, looks a notable contribution in a Gameweek which seems destined for modest returns.

Sadly for Dzeko and his owners, his winner, however precious, is unlikely to strengthen his case for consistent starts in Pellegrini’s plans. He’s likely be shown a quick exit and thanked for his efforts on a day which saw the big names blank.

The Underused

Heralded as a superb summer signing, Tom Huddlestone has been integral to Hull City’s impressive start to their Premier League campaign. Stationed in a deep-lying midfield role, turning defence into attack with sublime simplicity, the £5 million signing from Spurs seemed unlikely to tempt Fantasy interest. Today’s impressive 14-point haul may well change that – albeit briefly.

Huddlestone’s superb dead-ball delivery has been a feature of the Tigers’ season but, today, his two assists were accompanied by a first goal of the campaign in a 6-0 drubbing of René Meulensteen’s Fulham.

That was his first Premier League goal since 2011 – underlining the fact that Huddlestone’s appeal perhaps remains limited. At just 4.8 in the FPL, however, the playmaker is an assured starter who will likely contribute further assists.

Surely a contender for Hull’s player of the year, Huddlestone is exactly the kind of midfielder that Fantasy games and their scoring systems should be trying to reach. Huddlestone may claim maximum FPL bonus points from today’s convincing win but that will be only the second time he’s been recognised by the BPS. Arguably, as one of the season’s top performers so far, we should have had reason to take notice way before today’s haul. Huddlestone is one of several midfielders “underused” and undervalued in Fantasy terms.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s absence from the United team sheet with further groin gripes was undoubtedly the biggest blow on a day which saw rotation bite. United stuttered without his influence but David Moyes and United have already confirmed that he is likely to make his return against Spurs on Wednesday. With FPL vice captains kicking in, the onus will now be back on Luis Suarez to produce at Chelsea – the impact of Rooney’s injury could well be minor, then.

Even so, with Yaya Toure omitted by Pellegrini, we saw two key figures in the established “template” go AWOL, just a few days after Aaron Ramsey’s injury. Such setbacks could yet cause a shake-up in the rankings and mini-leagues, although few Fantasy managers seem likely to have benefited significantly from today’s events.

Tomorrow’s encounter at the Bridge will be more important that ever. Should Suarez blank again and Theo Walcott, backed by some with armband, produce at Newcastle, we may yet see Gameweek 19 have a significant impact.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Following on from my post on budget goalkeeper rotations, I have done some analysis on more expensive goalkeepers for those who plan to spend more on this position when they play their wildcard.

The fixtures start in GW 21, 11 Jan, (the first week after the WC can be used), and end in GW 38.

Prices listed are the current GK prices - these obviously may change by the time you play your wildcard.

    Arsenal + Hull ( Szczesny [5.8m] + McGregor [4.5m] )

avl, FUL, cry, CRY, sun, SOT, SUN, NEW, SWA, tot, WBA, sto, SWA, WHU, hul, NEW, WBA, nor.

    ~ Current combined price - 10.3m

    Norwich + Stoke ( Ruddy [4.9m] + Begovic* [5.4m] )
*Begovic is currently injured until February so Sorensen [4.4m] will play in his place.

eve, HUL, NEW, car, sot, SWA, TOT, avl, STO, WHU, SUN, HUL, WBA, NEW, car, TOT, FUL, wba.

    ~ Current combined price - 10.3m (9.3m with Sorensen)

    Swansea + Newcastle ( Vorm* [5.0m] + Krul [5.3m] )
*Vorm is currently injured for an unknown period of time so Tremmel [4.4m] will play in his place.

MCI, whu, FUL, SUN, CAR, sto, AVL, CRY, EVE, WBA, CRY, NOR, hul, sto, SWA, AVL, CAR, sun.

    ~ Current combined price - 10.3m (9.7m with Tremmel)

    West Brom + Aston Villa ( Foster [4.7m] + Guzan [5.1m] )

sot, EVE, WBA, eve, WHU, car, FUL, NOR, MUN, swa, STO, CAR, FUL, cry, SOT, WHU, HUL, STO.

    ~ Current combined price - 9.8m

    Arsenal + Sunderland ( Szczesny [5.8m] + Mannone [4.4m] )

avl, FUL, STO, CRY, HUL, MUN, SUN, WBA, SWA, CRY, nor, WHU, eve, WHU, hul, CAR, WBA, SWA.

    ~ Current combined price - 10.2m

For those thinking of spending >10m on their goalkeepers, I think the Szczesny and Mannone combination looks the best, and the other options I mentioned aren't too far behind. I am aware it isn't convenient using a rotation where you'll have to use a transfer replacing a GK when they return from injury, (Begovic, Vorm etc), but I added them in this post to show that there are alternatives to GKs from the 'big teams', that should still do well.

      Good post.

Although I'm not really a fan of rotating GK as we bound to choose 'the wrong' GK to play a certain week despite the fixture.

Especially if it's an expensive GK such as with Szczesny. If I have him, I'll play him every week.

For me it's one cheap keeper with decent streak of fixture (Boruc after WC) and switch to another one when the fixture gets harder.

The points spread between top expensive GK like Howard (80pts) and a cheap nailed on ones like Marshall (69 pts) is too little for the price difference of ~1m

Fair points Koflok. I only rotate GKs if they're both around 4.5m each as I agree that a GK like Szczesny should be played every week. I did a budget GK rotation post earlier (see hot topics), and I did this as well since I know some people generally like to spend more on their GKs.

        Thanks for the reply!

    A) Distin
    B) GJ
    C) JEvans

    E) Someone else up to 5.9m

The rest of my defence is Guzan - Mert - Ward - Rat - Burner (pretty bad, I know). Thanks in advance.

Quite a few posted them last night including Granville. Just wait for the game to make a decision. Could easily be rested for 2 games as a 3 day break is small even considering the 10 day break to the next GW.

Worth a 12 point hit to do four transfers now, knowing that if I wait for my wildcard, I won't have the funds to do it? The players I want are rising. This also gives me the advantage of being able to save my wildcard for late in the transfer window, should any big players leave (I'm looking at you Suarez!) or any come in.

The four I'm thinking of doing are Flanagan, Ramsey, Bannan and Lukaku to Ward, Silva, Sterling and Rodriguez which would leave me with the following:

    Krul, Harper
    Clyne, Chester, Coleman, Ward, Mertesacker
    Silva, Hazard, Walcott, Cabaye, Sterling
    Suarez, Rodriguez, Rooney

As it stands, I have a thirty three point lead in my minileague and I think that should increase today. Most if my rivals have either Negredo as captain or Rooney captain and Yaya vice captain. I'll wait till tonight and see how I stand in that league. I think if I have a similar or greater lead tonight then the hit is worth it to move forward with an improved team. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Silva isn't but Sterling and Rodriguez are and Ramsey's dropping like a stone.

After the season has ended - Yes. For him to leave in Jan then No, still had 30 months left on contract, not European cup tied and team flying high so Liverpool would already have more than enough leverage to get an insane price if they were selling next month.

This is crazy talk man... Definitely xfer out ramsey anyways, maybe stretch to flanagan as well. But getting rid of lukaku for a hit is one of those suicidal moves that can cot you 20 points in 1 week if he does well

Oh and the other thing - you can almost guarantee the players you want now, will not be the players you want at the end of january when WCs are fluttering! Don't get suckered into panic buying, there's always the next bandwagon coming rolling down the road 🙂

How about staggering it. Ramsey to sterling and depending on his returns today maybe lukaku to J rod. Do silva next game week as he won't rise before then

ur new players after a 12pts hit dun seem to do u much good anw...so dun take the hits..i will only sell ramsey->sterling..and even with sterling i have issues about his playing time when sturridge and gerrard is back. plus silva being suspended..u are much worse off with the hits

Maybe I'm thinking about this all wrong. I think I'm hell bent on getting Silva in. Maybe I just need to rethink it. Ramsey and Flanagan to Lallana and Ward anyone?

How would you improve this team?

    Mignolet / Lewis
    Rosenior / Dawson / Distin / Ward / Burner
    Sterling / Hazard / Silva / Walcott / Ward-Prowse
    Suárez / Lukaku / Rooney

1 FT, £3.5m in the bank.

Thinking of Rosenior ---> Koscielny (if fit) or Sagna?

Too many RMTs going around. Things are likely to change after the games. Relax it's Sunday.
No price changes to beat now so watch the games & then the RMTs will be more useful.

Yaya is a never bench, never captain player for me similar to Silva.
Everyone plays differently which is the beauty of the game.

Rest Ozil when he plays Newcastle away? A team who has beaten Utd,Tottenham,Chelsea and drew with Liverpool? Give up first place before the end of the year? Nah I don't think so. If Ozil isn't playing, he is injured or sick. He can always rest him for Cardiff at home. And the cup is not that important anyway, he doesn't need to field his best team vs Tottenham.

Thinking if swapping Yaya for Walcott this week, either that or Dawson for Koscielny. Have a feeling Walcott will get a shed flu over coming weeks.

Is Yaya expected to play? Any thoughts comments are welcome
