Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 34 – The Weak

Yesterday we highlighted the teams with Strong fixtures over the remaining five Gameweeks. Today it’s the turn of the less fortunate sides – both halves of Merseyside have a tough task to maintain their extraordinary seasons, while a couple of sources of cheap clean sheets look set to imminently lose their sheen:

Norwich

norwich34

Chris Hughton failed to use Norwich’s recent good fixture run to ease the Canaries’ relegation fears and paid the ultimate price last weekend. The media have been quick to point out the scale of the task facing new manager Neil Adams as his team square up to Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal following this weekend’s must-win visit to Fulham.

While many Fantasy managers placed their faith in Norwich’s splendid fixtures over the previous six weeks, the end looks nigh for the prospects of further Fantasy profit. Owners of Martin Olsson, the most popular of Norwich’s defensive assets, will be looking for an exit route and, while Robert Snodgrass could yet add to his tally against these opponents, few – if any – managers will be willing to acquire the playmaker at this point.

Liverpool

liverpool34

With hope filling their sails, the Reds are bold enough to dream of a title. Brendan Rodgers’ side welcome both their rivals for the crown to Anfield in the next three Gameweeks – affording them the toughest run of the three main contenders. Their other fixtures – trips to Norwich and Crystal Palace plus the Gameweek 38 visit of Newcastle – look decent enough but the defences of Man City and Chelsea are tough nuts to crack and Brendan Rodgers’ hitherto prolific attack may struggle to keep up their recent scoring rate.

These fixtures present a dilemma for Fantasy managers; whilst the Reds will be fully fired up for the challenge and are unlikely to be shut out entirely, owners of two or even three of the Liverpool attack may be looking to trim back their commitment in favour of options with easier paths to tread and double Gameweeks on the horizon. Daniel Sturridge – with just two goals from his last six games – is accordingly one of the most transferred-out players this week, and while few will be cancelling their subscriptions to Luis Suarez’s regular goal service, Steven Gerrard may be considered by some to be an expensive luxury in the face of these fixtures; a booking against City this Sunday would earn him a two-match ban and make the decision an easy one.

Everton

everton34

The other half of Merseyside aren’t doing too badly for themselves either. The Toffees stand a chance of pipping Arsenal to the last Champions League spot after giving the Gunners a hiding at Goodison last weekend. They have their work cut out though, as their schedule is far from straightforward, with the visits of both Manchester teams and a trip to Southampton to contend with. All that, of course, after this week’s profitable-looking double Gameweek and Fantasy managers will need to juggle the fertile ground of this week with the barren patch it precedes.

Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines find themselves in more demand than ever with the upcoming matches against Sunderland and Palace looking profitable but their owners will probably need an exit strategy. John Stones has impressed in the absence of Phil Jagielka, but with the latter likely to return from injury very soon, the youngster could prove to be Fantasy Fool’s Gold for the double Gameweek and beyond.

Kevin Mirallas has proven himself more than capable of climbing off the bench to pick up the points as he makes light of Roberto Martinez’s penchant for attacking rotation and both he and Ross Barkley have earned many new owners for the double Gameweek – after this week, the combination of tough fixtures and limited game time isn’t appealing. Romelu Lukaku is a different prospect; seemingly immune to Martinez’s rotational whims, he has, over the last two seasons, delighted in thwarting fixture watchers by scoring more against tough opposition than against weak, his hat-trick against Man United on the final day of last season being the most memorable example.

BE WARY OF

West Ham
The Hammers fell narrowly to defeat against Liverpool last weekend and now face three more of the top six in the remaining five Gameweeks. Sam Allardyce’s side still have to square up to Arsenal, Tottenham and Man City, though with a home game against Palace and trip to West Brom in the next three, owners of Adrian or Guy Demel may be minded to keep for now. Of the attacking options, Kevin Nolan has blanked in each of the last six, while Andy Carroll is starting to hit form at just the wrong time; with so many striking options to fill our precious three slots, that schedule suggests he’ll struggle to earn many new investors.

West Brom
It scarcely needs to be said that West Brom are not a good source of Fantasy profit. Almost irrelevant to the Fantasy landscape for the entire season, Pepe Mel’s side now have tough trips to Man City and Arsenal and a game against Tottenham as they battle to beat the drop. One could make a case that home games against West Ham and Stoke could be good for clean sheets but last season’s defensive over-performance have priced the Baggies out of reach of such gambles. Morgan Amalfitano has scored in two consecutive games now and, at 4.2, may have blinked onto a few radars – it’s worth noting that those goals came against Cardiff and Norwich, though, and the Frenchman may toil to replicate his recent endeavours in light of the remaining schedule.

Crystal Palace
Much like Everton, Tony Pulis’ side have a reasonable-looking double Gameweek up next, followed by some tougher fixtures that make “loading up” a fraught tactic. After this week, their final two home games are against Man City and Liverpool and they will need to overcome their patchy away form to take points from West Ham and Fulham. Crystal Palace have been most useful this season as a source of budget clean sheets and Joel Ward, Scott Dann and Adrian Mariappa are popular options for this week, as is goalkeeper Julian Speroni – clean sheets don’t look likely from these fixtures, though; only Southampton have shut Fulham out at the Cottage this season. Jason Puncheon rocketed onto radars with his brace last week, but whilst attacking points may be more likely than clean sheets, these fixtures still sound a note of caution.

😆 Me either now I noticed your 3 city players lol. Was gonna suggest waiting on news and getting Aguero. You could get Baines but would mean benching Ward/Eriksen/Gerrard.

Was planning this for the upcoming weeks
            GW35: Lukaku > Adebayor
            GW36: Coleman/Fonte > Evra ,Studge > Rooney
            GW37: Gerrard > Mata
Getting Baines would mean taking a hit....
So i guess sticking with this team is the way to go

Which option do you prefer for the coming weeks?

    1) Sturridge Hazard, Zab ----> Aguero, Eriksen, Baines. This leaves me with no money to bring in Mata without a hit next week

    2) Sturridge, Hazard, Flanagan ----> Lambert, Eriksen/Ramsey, Baines. Can do Mirallas to Mata next week for free

The main problem I can see is that is Aguero hits the ground running and stays fit I'll have to hit to get him in a week or 2 anyways but thts a big if. opinions please

Rooney has what like 10 days of rest until the next game, by GW37 surely his toe will be okay? He did look -terrible- last night though.

Ade is getting the points, no doubt, but either of Rooney/Aguero could run amok in a DGW with good fixtures.

    Morning guys.

Hazard's injury has changed my plans - Mata stays, Hazard goes, meaning I have to play one of these this week...

    Jedinak (AVL, eve)
    Cahill (swa)

I think most would say Cahill as Jedinak has basically no attacking threat, but he's guaranteed atleast 4 points, so a Cahill clean sheet (which I think is unlikely) would only result in a couple of points loss. All opinions appreciated!

Do you think there is a 50% or higher chance of Cahill either scoring, keeping a clean sheet or creating an assist? If so pick Cahill. If not go with Jedinak. It really is a coin toss in my opinion though I personally would probably pick Jedanik with no degree of certainty.

Debating alternative GW34+35 plan with no Aguero for this GW (bringin in for Lukaku in GW35). In that case, transfers boil down to who will score the most over GW34+35 out of

    Adebayor (wba FUL)
    Sturridge (MCI nor)

thanks guys, Adebayor is what I'm thinking too - could actually be a keeper for the rest of season, depending on Rooney form. But still need to actually decide whether to go with this plan (which involves 3 city mids), or bring in Aguero for Sturridge this week and ship Lukaku next week (still plan A)

I hate the waiting game with injuries ... I'm usually the patient kind and miss the price rises / drops ... the one time i did go early i got Debuchy and Aguero as they both picked up mid-week injuries and got the red flag.

Hazard we're expecting to be out for a couple you'd expect ... it's a difficult period of time for that sort of coin on the bench.

Can't have them all so here is easy one for you, Puncheon or Nasri?

    a) Puncheon => meaning I can get Zabaleta, Mata, Rooney, ManU def in time for gw37.
Midfield getting bit weak tough, gw37 with Yaya, Mata, AJ + one of Punch/Coleman

    b) Nasri => no city def, no united def if I want both Rooney + Mata (unless Evans becomes good pick by then)

I'm thinking a) atm, but little worried about that midfield.

What's stopping me right now is that I know I want both Mata and Gerrard in over the next few weeks, but obviously Mata has a blank this week and Gerrard still perilously close to that 2nd YC. Feels a bit of a wasted transfer getting a midfielder in who isn't either of them.

Not 100% convinced by Eriksen for the rest of the season just yet..

He seems to play better at home; with 4 goals, 3 assists and 10 baps coming at home vs 2 goals, 4 assists and 4 baps away from home.

His only home games left are against a resurgent Fulham side fighting for their PL lives that won't be easy, and Villa on the last day of the season, who are much better away at the big teams than they are at home.

His away games aren't that easy either, West Brom are famous for getting managers sacked these days and aren't exactly pushovers at home, and then Erik has Stoke and West Ham away, both of whom are decent at home.

I think a lot of people are seeing what they want to see and are expecting those matches to be easier than they will be.

Having said that, I love Eriksen as a player and think he's a great footballer.

If Fulham beat Norwich this weekend then they're only 2 points behind, and with Norwich's disgusting last 4, Fulham will believe.

Magath has improved them a small bit, Holtby, Dejagah, Richardson and a few others have started playing a bit better.. Spurs have zero to play for too.

Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself.

Fulham are terrible, there's no two ways about it. Nearly as bad as Sunderland who a 'nothing to play for' Spurs destroyed.

Still, that Fulham fixture is the best fixture left for Eriksen, Stoke / West Ham / West Brom are all potentially problematic away games and Villa are just mental and unpredictable, I'd expect Spurs to win 3 of those games, maybe 4, but not by much and Adebayor will probably be a better option than Eriksen imo..

Ramsey > Eriksen for fpl points 😉

Aye I would rather have Ramsey too. The only thing I disagree on is Fulham being anything but awful 😀

They are still very fragile in defence (i wouldn't say awful though). I saw their game at Villa and at some point Villa almost turned the match around, after Fulham had 2-3 big chances. They are very lively at the moment, but you have to be much stronger in defence to have a chance for survival. Imho they are an even better matchup for Tottenham (for our Tottenham attacking players, that is) than Sunderland was. They will attack, score, but also receive a lot.

I won't be getting him, I prefer Ramsey at that price, the time to get in Eriksen was 3 weeks ago imo..

            Silva/Nasri/Yaya -> Ramsey
            Lambert -> Aguero

That's the current plan for sometime over the next few weeks anywho..

nice post....just on the home v away thing, he has played 988 minutes at home and only 543 away, so there is no actual difference in form...

he has had to adapt to the league and his left midfield position, which he has know done...his free kicks are exceptional, corner delivery brilliant and crossing ability exquisite...he also has the ability to perform even when others around him are playing like shite (take note mesut)

finally, , i know the fixtures arent THAT easy, but then couldnt you say sunderland are fight for their lives? look what happened to them....spurs have a great record v lower teams so i expect them to keep scoring

        Nice reply 🙂

That's fair enough, must admit I missed the difference in minutes home v away.

I think Sunderland, Newcastle and Cardiff are the 3 worst teams in the league at the moment, even Fulham would have put up a better fight than that Sunderland disaster, and Fulham are at home which should help them.

Eriksen will probably do well enough until the end, but I prefer Ramsey myself and I think the time has passed on getting Eriksen.

People are being influenced by the scores he got vs a loose Southampton at home and a looser Sunderland at home (with his goal taking a deflection to barely beat Mannone)

Exactly what I was thinking, Arsenal are going to turn to Ramsey to effectively lead them through until the end.

They'll need him too with Everton taking 4th spot by storm.

If my text is bigger than the comment box 'post comment' disappears.

This happens normally I click outside the text box and the option for post comment appears but not this morning.

        Maybe its chrome.

There's the obvious Sturridge > Aguero (but wait until he's been passed fit)

Could also get rid of Hazard (again pending news) for Yaya,

I am thinking of getting in mirallas for AJ.
when aguero and hazard injury update comes, then the 2 transfers you suggested. I'd do that.
Otherwise I was thinking of getting in Mirallas for AJ.what say?
