Spot the Differential – Gameweek 36

As always on a Saturday morning, we scour the market for some overlooked options as the minutes tick down on another Gameweek’s deadline. All of our trio have left it late in the season but are finally starting to fulfil expectations and play a key part in their respective sides’ fortunes.

Lukas Podolski

In his first start of the season back in Gameweek 2, the Arsenal forward was quick off the mark and grabbed a two-goal haul and maximum bonus points in a 3-1 win over Fulham. Podolski’s campaign was immediately brought to an abrupt halt with a hamstring injury sustained against Fenerbahce in late August, however, and he failed to feature again until mid-December – climbing off the bench to bag a goal and assist against West Ham.

Having flitted in and out of the Gunners’ first XI over the subsequent few months, he finally seems to have nailed down a regular role, and with a security of starts boosting his match sharpness, the German international has finally flourished. Five goals and two assists in the last five Gameweeks, with a brace in each of his last two appearances, is indicative of Podolski’s current form – despite a role on the left of the attacking midfield three, he has still racked up the returns and looks a key figure in Arsenal’s push for a fourth-place finish.

Available for 7.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team, he now welcomes Newcastle and West Brom to the Emirates, and with a final day trip to Norwich also on the Gunners’ agenda, Podolski looks poised to continue his fine recent showings.

Marko Arnautovic

A somewhat enigmatic figure, the Austrian struggled to adjust to his new surrounds after arriving at Stoke last summer. With the Potters in a period of transition under new manager Mark Hughes, Arnautovic managed just a goal and two assists in his first five months in the English top-flight and showed little of the talents that persuaded the likes of Inter to shell out for his services in seasons gone by.

As Hughes’ tactics finally clicked, Arnautovic stepped up and has since become a crucial member of a side that has tasted defeat just twice in the last 12 matches and has comfortably secured their survival for yet another season. With two goals, three assists and five bonus points in his last six, the Austrian is now up to eight assists for the season and, as we witnessed in last week’s draw at Cardiff, is also now on spot-kick duties for the Staffordshire outfit.

Available for just 5.1 in FPL, 4.9 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, Arnautovic now welcomes Spurs and Fulham to the Britannia – where Stoke have already beaten the likes of United, Chelsea and Arsenal – whilst a trip to neighbours West Brom on the final day of the season affords further reason for optimism, bearing in mind the Baggies have conceded three times in each of their last three at the Hawthorns.

Fabio Borini

Just two Gameweeks ago, Sunderland seemed dead and buried, but thanks to a couple of gritty away displays, Gus Poyet’s great escape looks very much on the cards. A draw at City was followed by an incredible victory at Chelsea, where Borini grabbed a vital spot-kick winner as the Black Cats moved to within three points of safety.

Whilst Connor Wickham may have been a little more prolific over the past fortnight, the Italian’s underlying statistics have been far more impressive and suggest he could be the cannier acquisition for those eyeing up the Wearsiders for the run-in.

Poyet’s side have three home games still to play and, crucially, all are against relegation rivals. Cardiff, West Brom and Swansea have yet to make their way to the Stadium of Light, and with a double Gameweek 37 trip to Old Trafford also thrown in, Sunderland’s recent exploits suggest they have the momentum on side to secure their survival. If the Wearsiders are to retain their palce in the Premier League for another season, Borini – priced at 6.2 in FPL, 7.5 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team – will surely have a part to play.

    Help appreciated guys

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/apr/25/ryan-giggs-ferdinand-vidic-manchester-united?CMP=twt_gu

I saw this this morning and I still can't decide who to get. I obviously want to get someone who will play today and both games in DGW. I wasgoing with Jones until I saw the article and now I'm leaning towards Vidic. The question is does vidic has the legs to play 3 games in less thatn 10 days?

I also know that Rafael is out so does that mean Jones plays RB and when Rafa is back, Jones plays CB and one of Vidic and Rio is rested?

Please help me decide. Any thoughts?

I'm with Evs really. Likely to go up to the wire on my final decision though.
Newcastle really do look like lambs to the slaughter so Rambo could easily bag 14-20 points, but I also fancy Giggs and Utd players to put on a real show vs Norwich today to prove a point - they've taken a lot of flack for 'not performing' for Moyes and will want to show their professionalism and quality against a weaker side.

      Rooney

Fantastic Fixture. Norwich now play alot more attacking, which leaves their defence vulnerable. They've already been shipping goals like crazy, conceding 12 goals in their last 4 Away games.
He's on pennos and FKs. Giggs is now in charge and they'll be looking to play their best till the rest of the season. Will smash the last 3 fixtures IMO.

Had it on Ramsey until last night when I switched to Suarez. Ramsey (C) feels a bit too much like I'm chasing last weeks points. It's a bit one this week as I'm about 14pts ahead in my MLs so I want to get it right.

Suarez's record against top 4 is poor but against Hilario/Schwarzer he should find some joy.

Ageuro for me. Good fixture and has delivered some returns.

Chelsea will still be strong defensively without Terry and Cech. Rooney is not in form and is enough of a differential being in my team already I think (with regards mini-league)

Ramsey good form and fixture, but I always feel its a bit of a risk captaining a mid over a striker with a decent game.

Not sure it's worth a hit this week. If you plan a hit with the next week in mind there's always the risk of an injury. Having said that I think Terry to evra or Manc def is worth doing. Maybe wait on punch - or make a punch to Amalfitano swap this week. Just one I'd say. See what happens on the treatment table and take a hit next week.

Ivan for me. More chance of Chelsea frustrating Liverpool than Palace keeping Aguero and co. out.

Neither look likely for a CS, but Ivan has more attacking threat

    Final decision:

    Chester (ful) or Delph (swa)

Don't fancy Hull keeping a CS away and I have a feeling that Delph will get a sneaky assist in a game with goals.

Don't see a lot of goals in the LIV v CHE match.

Mourinho, with little striker options and no Hazard will go to defend and try to grab a 1-0.

Liverpool won't want to lose this either, knowing Citeh could profit if they do.

    Prediction..? 0-0 or 1-0 Liverpool

Recent pattern is Liverpool score early on (Sterling) then sit back a bit. Chelsea equalise second half then Liverpool sneak a win. This is what Liverpool do. I took a 4 point hit to bring in Kosc cos I know Azpi won't keep a CS.

I'd hold off for this week, Rooney should do well, but the chance of more than 8pts better than Lukaku is slim. If he looks the part you can do the switch for DGW. You also have Mata for United coverage.

I would however play Davies (assuming it's Swansea Davies) over Fonte probably. Villa are quite literally pointless at the moment.

My luck has been good recently so maybe I'm getting a touch of hubris in challenging the 'Suarez is untouchable' doctrine.

To me he looks slightly off form and getting a bit frustrated. I wouldn't be surprized if crafty old Mourinho isn't planning to have a go at him in the hope of getting him sent off.

Palace are form team for keeping it tight and I reckon City have had it. More chance of finishing 5th than 1st!

I think Palace's admirable run has come to an end. Now that City have blown it the pressure is off. All to late but they will win big today

Why do you think it's going to end? Look at the scalps Pulis has taken so far. He'd love to add City to that list. He's not going to let his players stop now.

Odds on a 6th win in row surely against us now, would be bloody amazing but im predicting a 1-2 result to Man City sunday.

Final decision is a difficult one - please bench one:

    AJ (car)
    Amalfitano (WHU)
    Eriksen (stk)

Feels weird bringing him in this week, finding him in the scout picks, AND benching him 🙂
I guess Michu to Amal was just a tool to get Rooney for lukaku...

    Repost...

Mannone is on but also have
Fonte / Coleman / Chester (Ward, Caulker)
    £1.3M in kitty

I've got high hopes for Everton at Southampton who have to give it everything (and Saints have not so much to give), so I'm thinking of:

    A) Ward for Fonte (he's got the form, but City with AGuero and probably Yaya surely won't be kept out?)
    B) Caulker in for Fonte (most likely and he does get involved up front)
    C) Bring in Utd defender for a hit ahead of DGW (could afford Jones, Vidic or Smalling)
    D) Bring in a Sunderland defender for a hit ahead of DGW

I think Everton will keep a clean sheet. Saints on holidays and playing some youngsters.

Think City will score 2 or more so not B
Which Utd defender so not C

What about Koscielny for a hit?
No dgw but fixtures and form coming back

Have a gut feeling doing a hit to get rid of Sterling for Ramsey will backfire....The lad's on serious form and Liverpool are always pumped up against big teams.

Matic will be trailing on Suaz, Mikel on Studge. That leaves Raheem unmarked.

          Sterling on fire.
I got Ramsey in for Silva freeing up funds for Rooney but I'm not that happy with the decision,
          Kept Sterling though

    Distin -> Evra

    Already done -4p hit:

    Lukaku -> Rooney
    Lallana -> Ramsey

    Current team

    Mannone
    Ward-Baines-Azpi (no one)
    Eriksen-Ramsey-Nasri-Gerrard
