The Weekend’s Scout Picks

posted in Scout Reports, Tips |

Refresh your screen for my last scout picks of the season, then read on for the usual blurb behind the selection.

Picks have come early this week because I’m just about to leave for a weekend music festival. That will see me desperately trying to find a TV with Sky, whilst updating the site via my laptop and a mobile broadband connection. I might even get to see some bands. Enough of my rambles - read on and good luck for the final hurrah.

With minds turning to golf courses and signing-on fees, the key to selection for this final game is to locate those players who still have something to play for. With that in mind, fantasy managers have been plundering United and Chelsea’s squad all week and it’s no surprise to see four players from the title contenders in my lineup. With my two player per club restriction, I’ve opted for a defender and attacking player from each - but there are plenty of options if you have the cash to invest more heavily in the big two. Elsewhere I’ve looked to select those players with either Europe or relegation on their minds - both should offer enough incentive to bring in some profit.

Starting at the back I’ve opted for the rocks that are Ferdinand and Terry. Certainly the latter looks good for a clean sheet at home to a Bolton side that are likely to offer little in attack at Stamford Bridge. Ferdinand has a tougher task at the JJB but you can see Ferguson looking to keep things tight should United snatch an early lead. Ferdinand has also been the source of a few FPL bonus points in recent weeks - earning the maximum at home to West Ham last time out, despite United conceding.

Alongside the big two, I’ve kept faith with Wheater who repaid my faith him in him last week with a clean sheet against Portsmouth. A home game with City looks another likely shutout for Southgates men and Wheater could always grab a goal from a set-piece of course.

Everton’s Lescott completes the back four. I can see Moyes’ men snatching a narrow win at Goodison - they need three points to seal fifth place but have struggled for goals. If they get the lead, they’ll doubtless look to keep things tight and with Newcastle upset by the loss of Barton and Viduka, I can see Everton keeping Keegan’s men at bay.

The Keeper situation is far from easy once again. I’ve opted for Hahnemann of Reading. He looks a good bet for a clean sheet at Derby, even though I see Reading conceding with Coppell fielding a more attacking lineup. Even if that is the case, I’d expect Hahnemann to earn some points for a few saves in the FPL. Outside of those defences I’ve already selected, Friedal looks your best bet. Again I can see Blackburn conceding, although Friedal will doubtless earn a few FPL points from saves as he’s likely to be under intense pressure from a Birmingham attack fighting for their lives.

Moving to the midfield and it’s no surprise to see Ronaldo in there once again. He’s almost guaranteed to be amongst the points in a game that United must win to assure themselves of the title. Alongside him I’ve kept faith with Bullard who goes to Portsmouth looking to lead Fulham to three points to save their Premiership status. He’s almost certain to reap FPL bonus, regardless of goals and assists, should Hodgson’s men prevail.

Hunt is a new name in the picks this week. Coppell has already remarked that he’ll select a more attacking approach at Derby in a game that his side must win - Hunt will be central to Reading’s attacking ambitions. I can see Reading needing at least a couple of goals at Pride Park and with goal difference a factor, they may well go for broke. I’d expect Hunt to be amongst the points as a result.

Barry completes the midfield. Surrounded by transfer speculation, that could be a distraction, but Barry and Villa have all to play for at Upton Park as they look to snatch fifth place from Everton. I can see Villa putting a couple past the Hammers injury-prone defence and Barry should profit from that.

Up front Drogba comes in as my second acquisition from Chelsea. He’s certain to start, and with Anelka sidelined and Lampard not necessarily guaranteed a start, he’ll be the chief goal threat in a game that I can see Grant’s men winning comfortably. Alongside him I’ve gone for McFadden. Classified as a forward in most fantasy games - he is due another big game for McLeish and I can just see him turning in a performance against Blackburn. If he’s classified as a midfielder in your game, even better. Grab him in that position and consider Forssell or even Kitson of Reading, who could well figure amongst the goals as they fight for their lives at Derby.

Let’s cruise around some of the alternatives. Defensively the five defences I’ve opted for appear to offer the best potential for clean sheets. I can see Arsenal conceding at Sunderland, Liverpool at Spurs and Portsmouth letting at least one in against Fulham. That said, all three defences are worth a look if you don’t share my view with Clichy, Carragher and Distin perhaps the best options in each. The Boro vs City game could easily end in a bore draw so the City defence, however weakened by injury, could be worth considering with Dunne and keeper Hart the obvious contenders.

In midfield Downing almost made it into the eleven once more but, as I’ve mentioned, I’ve an inkling that there will be few goals in there game with City. If you can afford a third Chelsea player than either Lampard or Ballack are certainly popular buys this week. Both should come away with some returns if Chelsea get the kind of result I expect them to against Bolton. Joe Cole is another option here - he should start with Anelka ineligible but Ballack and Lampard certainly appear to have stronger goal/assist potential based on current form.

For cheaper options, Birmingham’s Kapo, Fulham’s Davies, Everton’s Osman and Reid at Sunderland all look decent given the fixtures and/or motivation on the final day. Similarly, Bentley and Gamst Pedersen offer potential if you can see Blackburn snatching a goal or two at St Andrews - I can certainly see them nicking at least one. I’ve a feeling in my water about Benayoun at Spurs for some reason - I sure I can get something prescribed for that though.

In the forward positions the popular buys - Torres, Adebayor, Tevez and Santa Cruz should all play and could easily be amongst the goals. The latter two for me, offer the better potential with Tevez in particular showing good form and facing a must-win situation at the JJB. I’ve long supported Berbatov for the final few games but he has clearly been somewhat distracted by speculation surrounding his future. He is set to return to the Spurs lineup and could issue a reminder of his class to would-be suitors. He’d be a big gamble in fantasy terms but perhaps worth holding onto if you have him in your side and have planned transfers elsewhere.

Yakubu is another who has suffered from a lack of form. He was dropped to the bench against Arsenal but seems set to start on Sunday as Everton look to seal the fifth spot. Everton should profit from Newcastle’s end of season apathy and Yakubu could yet issue a reminder of his fantasy potential on the final day. Villa will also be motivated by that fifth spot and as always, Young and Agbonlahor are worth some consideration here. Villa should tuck at least a couple past the West Ham defence that is weakened by injury.

There are some decent cheap options that appear to offer good potential. Forssell for Birmingham, Kamara for Fulham, Jones for Sunderland and, as mentioned, Kitson for Reading, all look pretty decent options if you’re on a budget.

As usual I should end by looking at the Captain situation for FPL managers. The current poll is as usual, spot on with my thinking for this. Ronaldo is the clear favourite of course - he should fetch returns with United needing goals at Wigan. That won’t be of use to those looking to close a final game gap so the Chelsea trio of Drogba, Ballack and Lampard offer handy and certainly viable alternatives. I can see Chelsea seeing off Bolton with at least three goals and Drogba should in amongst them. For me, he is the option to use against Ronaldo huggers. If you’ve for some reason ignored Chelsea’s potential this week and you need to gamble, then the Villa trio of Barry, Young and Agbonlahor could offer the next best option.

That’s it from me then and from my final picks of the season. I’d just like to end on a thanks to you lot for reading my rambles each week and for all those who contribute to the discussion process that follows, right up until FPL deadlines and through to when the first goals go in.

I’ll miss these verbose rants each week but rest assured, I’ll be chucking plenty of content your way to digest, even without a ball being kicked in the Premiership. Work now starts on content for the summer break so I’ll be scouting out the promoted teams and the new signings in the coming weeks to help get us prepared for the new season. There will also be a full redesign launched this summer - and eventually I’ll post a preview of that on the site and start taking some feedback.

For now though - thanks for your support and good luck for the final day.

    Team
    Carson
    Brown Lescott Hughes
    Ballack Ronaldo (c) Barry Bullard
    Agbonlahor Santa Cruz Adebayor

    Subs:
    Niemi Hreidarsson Wheater J O’Brien

Would it be worth a 4 point hit to drop Hreidarsson for Terry?
I could have a back 3 of Wheater Brown Terry
or have a back 4 including Hughes but drop a forward.

And if i take the 2nd option, who is the best option to drop?

PS Thanks for all your help to everyone on the site and especially to Mark who has made this an invaluable place to visit.
(So invaluable i have had to keep it quiet from the other members of my own league!!)

Good luck to all this weekend and COME ON UNITED!

    1. Gravatar Guy Incognito on May 9th, 2008 at 11:55 (Reply)

I’d be tempted to bench Hughes for Wheater, or bring in Terry. Your front three look fine, I’d definitely keep them in your line up.

      1. Gravatar Barry on May 9th, 2008 at 12:08 (Reply)

so i could drop hreidarsson bring in terry and have him brown and lescott, with gabby santa and adebayor up front

that is assuming the front three will all score more than hughes or wheater and terry i worth the 4 point hit over hughes and wheater.

    Mark,

Considering my track record at post - match press conferences, maybe I could offer my services for next season. An M&S chocolate sponge roll a week and I’m yours, what do you say?

    1. Gravatar Lucy on May 9th, 2008 at 11:00 (Reply)

We’ve only got your word for these post - match press conferences. I’m calling shenanigans!

      1. Gravatar Alex on May 9th, 2008 at 11:39 (Reply)

You can do that, but do shenanigans have access to the press room?

    2. Gravatar Barry on May 9th, 2008 at 11:12 (Reply)

i’ll get you an M&S chocolate sponge roll if you can provide point winning guidance to my post above ;)

      1. Gravatar Alex on May 9th, 2008 at 11:42 (Reply)

How much cash do you have in the bank?
If you drop Agbonlahor, could you afford Tevez or Drogba?

        1. Gravatar Barry on May 9th, 2008 at 12:05 (Reply)

well i could keep hreidarsson and sign tevez instead of santa agbon or adeb but wouldnt get terry.
          have 2.5 mil in bank.
i will have to take a 4 point hit to do any of these

          1. Gravatar Alex on May 9th, 2008 at 12:37 (Reply) (Comments won't nest below this level)

It all depends then if you’re chasing a lead or protecting one. I think you’ll be fine with Wheater, Lescott and Brown. Don’t think Terry would be worth a 4 point hit; defenders rarely are. I also don’t think option 2 sounds very appealing; I’d play the 3-4-3.
If you’re chasing a lead then I think you should gamble on another striker. Out of the three Agbonlahor looks least likely to get loads of points, purely because at Villa it seems like a different forward gets the points every week (although he did score 4 in the last 5 games…tricky, this game). Also, if last week was anything to go by, their forward points streak may have come to an end.
If you have to take a 4 point hit for Tevez or Drogba, maybe you could consider a cheaper striker who could do well. Mark already suggested McFadden, but he’s an injury doubt, so perhaps Forssell?
Or do a straight swap from Adebayor to Drogba. Surely with 2.5 in the bank you wouldn’t have to take a hit for that? Or did you already do a transfer?

          2. Gravatar Barry on May 9th, 2008 at 12:58 (Reply)

unfortunately drogba is 12.1 and ade is 9 so plus 2.5 is 11.5.
leading my own league by quite a bit but in 4th on this one and hoped to catch up on anyone.

think i might drop agbon for tevez in the hope carlos scores a few (and brings us the title!)

          3. Gravatar Alex on May 9th, 2008 at 13:02 (Reply)

            Oh, that’s right…
I guess I got spoiled because I can afford just about anyone at the moment (yes, the benefits of having a crap defence).

Good luck on Sunday. I’m a Gooner but definitely don’t want Chelsea to win.

Mark, What do you think about Shorey for this week, He is capable of getting a few assists and maybe a rare clean sheet against Derby??

  4. Gravatar jim on May 9th, 2008 at 11:09 (Reply)

    Mark
You are a shining star in the darkness. Keep up the good work!

  5. Gravatar Utd Fan on May 9th, 2008 at 11:20 (Reply)

Who would the rest of you play this week, Shorey against Derby or Wheater against City? I was going to start with Shorey but Marks put doubt in my mind by putting Wheater in his picks.. HELP!

    1. Gravatar Mark on May 9th, 2008 at 11:41 (Reply)

Hi Utdfan. Shorey was in my first round of picks, I only missed him out of the alternatives because I had the Reading back four covered with Hahnnemann. He should do well - potential for assists certainly. Wheater got in because of the two per team rule with Hunt taking the second spot. I’ve a feeling that Boro vs City could be a nasty 0-0 or 1-0 for Boro.

      1. Gravatar higgo on May 9th, 2008 at 19:29 (Reply)

i had the same thoughts but im going with shorey as all my rivals have wheater and i dont think boro will keep a clean sheet

  6. Gravatar Utd Fan on May 9th, 2008 at 11:50 (Reply)

Cheers Mark, One more thing though please, I am currently joint top of my mini league going into the last gameweek, so theres alot to play for. I can’t decide who to bring in between Essien and Ballack. My closest competetor has Essien so I was thinking of bringing in Ballack. But if if essien does better than ballack or ballack gets replace by lampard this week, I could lose the league. Any advice, Ballack or Essien?

  7. Gravatar jimbo on May 9th, 2008 at 12:46 (Reply)

    Mark
My free sub was Reid out, Ballack in. Was thinking of taking a hit for a defender. Any suggestions over either A Cole (only Chelsea one i can afford) or Wheater. Or should i just stop tinkering and stick with Distin or Geremi.
I have made 80 transfers so far this season, a statistic of which only Claudio Ranieri would be proud, and i can’t stop now.
    Cheers
Ps Top site, please keep it up.

  8. Gravatar Johno on May 9th, 2008 at 13:39 (Reply)

I’m in a league where only one manager can own each player, so can’t just pick up anybody. Any word on Carvalho? I’d grab Alex if I had any clearer idea about Ricky Oak’s health but it’s gone awfully quiet since yesterday…

    Mark,

this is my first post but I’ve been visiting your site throughout the season. I just wanted to thank you for your views and suggestions. It’s your thought process and explanations as much as the tips themselves that have been of most use. Over the past few years I’ve been a steady mid table performer but this year, going in to the last week, I’m proudly ranked 127th in the classic fantasy league game. I’ve handsomely won the Bristol City Supporters Trust Friends & Enemies League too. In addition to the success, I’ve enjoyed looking at team selection in a different way, and I’d like to thank you for the pleasure and glory you’ve helped me achieve.

Finally, if Bristol City achieve the impossible dream and make it to the Premier League, it shouldn’t take you too long to scout us and reach a sound conclusion…

The coffee’s run out, the lineup for “Cynical Challenge” (my team) is set, and a second place finish is inevitable.

As the curtain drops on the season, what are your plans for the site in the off-season? Discussions of EURO 2008? Rumors on off season transactions? Crashing Alex & Puffin’s wedding in Blackpool?

Thanks for all your hard work and fun this year.

    Happy Trails (for now),

Mark, thanks for all of the useful information throughout the season. This was my first year playing fantasy football and I will finish first in the mini-league I am a member of (I’m currently up by 190 pts so even if I put the entire Derby lineup in I would still win). Thanks and keep up the good work.

  14. Gravatar Martin on May 9th, 2008 at 20:30 (Reply)

    Mark,

Have already made 1 transfer for the week and with Robinson injured, I notice on BBC webpages that Isaakson may be back for Man City, which is a concern as Hart is my other keeper and don’t really want to incur 4pt penalty. Who do you think will start and if it isn’t Hart is it worth the 4pt hit as I’ll score zero otherwise. (0.8m in bank)

Great site, keep it going for next season please!

  15. Gravatar shaun on May 9th, 2008 at 20:35 (Reply)

    Evenin’ all,
i’m trying to choose between Friedel vs brum away OR Hart vs Boro away.
Get the feeling that the brummies might score but i also think that the Man City defence is creaking badly
    Any advice anyone ???

P.S. Muchos Gracias to you Mark, you’re a diamond

Evening all. The team that I currently have is as follows:

    Ghandi
    Marley / J.Lennon / M.Garvey / Malcom X
    Luther (King- captain) / P.Tosh / Buddha
Jesus Christ / Lao Tzu / Plato

I was thinking Ballack in for Tosh? Any ideas??

How about bringing in Aristotle for Ghandi? Greek players are in good spirits since qualifying for Euro 2008

    2. Gravatar TheNecromancer on May 9th, 2008 at 21:19 (Reply)

Where to start with this one:
Ghandi - a seive in loincloth
      Marley & Lenon - pacifists
      X - red card magnet
      Garvey - no clue
      Luther - brilliant
Tosh & Budda - creativity but no attacking instincts
Plato - too caught up in playing “ideal” football (see Republic)
JC & LT - Lack that killer instinct

Stick with the Derby starting XI.

      Let it be,

Look forward to seeing the new site design Mark, sounds like you’ll be fairly busy over the summer.

I think the best thing you could add as a feature would be a dedicated forum, to generate discussions which aren’t confined to new topics, and don’t go off subject.

Thanks for all the tips this season, much appreciated.

    Mark/Anyone,

Just wondering what the grounds were for the view that ‘Lampard [is] not necessarily guaranteed a start’ this weekend? Is is due to Ballack’s good form of late or is there something else that i have missed?

  27. Gravatar Al on May 10th, 2008 at 06:00 (Reply)

Lampard is guaranteed a start Brand don’t worry about that. He’ll be in midfield with Essien and Ballack. If anything I’d say Ballack is at more risk of rotation with Joe Cole always likely to feature at some stage.

    1. Gravatar Brad on May 10th, 2008 at 07:12 (Reply)

Al - Cool. Thanks for that vote of confidence. I am a little precious about my picks this week as i am, like many others here, trying to avoid allowing the chasing fantasy league pack catching me at the 11th hour. :) I have brought in Lamps for Fabs and Hahnemann for James.

Finally, Mark, i’d like to join the general consensus and offer my thanks and appreciation for your efforts this year. Well done. What will we all do with ourselves next week? So sad. Already looking forward to August.

      1. Gravatar CK on May 10th, 2008 at 10:59 (Reply)

Lamps could be rested on the basis on a European cup final! Chelsea will have enough to win tomorrow without Lampard, and Grant has hinted that this may well happen. That’s why I brought Ballack in.
…but hey, we have all been here before. None of us know what will really happen, it’s all speculation at this stage.

But the champs final is a full 10 days after the Bolton match?

Everyone keeps saying that Bolton will be a pushover but you never know! As a Chelsea fan I would be annoyed if we fielded anything less than our strongest team, but then Grant has done some strange things in the past.

    Hi everybody,

Just got around to selecting my final team for this season, here it is:

    James (Hart)
    Carvalho(Knight)/Brown/Gallas
    Ballack/Bullard/Butt/Ronaldo(c)
    Berbatov/Santa Cruz/Adebayor

I’ll be refining my betting techniques over the summer to avoid the threat of bankrupcy hanging over my head, but here is my last hurrah for this season:

A £10 accumulator on wins for Chelsea, Man Utd, Fulham and Newcastle - paying out approx. £150 if it comes in.

I expect both Chelsea and Man Utd’s game to be low-scoring affairs for the record.

Good luck to everybody for the weekend. I must thank Mark for the endless hours he has contributed to making this site brilliant, even in the midst of moving house and going to music festivals…

One question - since I am relatively to this much-treasured website new, what happens during the summer? Do we waffle away until August with our thoughts for the new season etc.??

    1. Gravatar yer dad on May 10th, 2008 at 08:14 (Reply)

Leighton; We have the Derby, Ryder Cup, Olympics, Euros and the annual cheese rolling contest in my local village, which means we have plenty to talk about and gamble on.
That is a tempting accumulator and I may well dip into yer mum’s pound jar for that one

Just polishing my clubs now and looking forward to a great day chasing a little white ball in the sunshine. I have given up surfing for the summer.

any thoughts on transferring kranjcar for ballack, that would mean two chelsea mids though? Anyone got any ideas on improvements? 3.2mil in the bank.

    HELP!
Who should I bench? Larsson or Downing. Downing is my preferred option on a normal day but he has little to play for tomorrow and Larsson has to play for his life. What you lads reckon?

    1. Gravatar Al on May 10th, 2008 at 13:48 (Reply)

Thats a harder one CK. Both teams at home, both expected? to win. My view on Downing is that he’s the trigger for anything that happens at Borough, he takes the set pieces, he makes the chances. Current form in FPL, downing 4.4, Larsson 3.0.

I would bank on borough winning by a bigger margin than birmingham, which would give Downing the greater chance of getting in on the action.

      1. Gravatar CK on May 10th, 2008 at 15:18 (Reply)

Yeah kinda the same way as I’m thinking Al. Although I do think if B’ham win - Larsson will have something to do with it. That said, I’ll prob punt for Downing. Cheers for your views anyway mate!

iv already made a transfer. But should i take a 4 point hit to bring in…
    a) teves for young
    b) cech for freidel
    c) neither

    any comments welcome

  36. Gravatar Edwardo on May 10th, 2008 at 18:34 (Reply)

    of those choices…

    c) neither

Option b) makes absolutely no sense.

    1. Gravatar CK on May 10th, 2008 at 18:35 (Reply)

I would say that the safe option in c) Neither

  37. Gravatar joe on May 10th, 2008 at 18:47 (Reply)

cheers guys, i was leaning towards c anyway but i was not sure whether there were any other options i may have done,

    cheers

    next up…

who should i have captain? im 9 ponts ahead of my main rival at the top of my league, which 1 out of these…

    a) Lampard
    b) Ronaldo
    c) Bentley
    d) Santa Cruz
    e) A.Young

    1. Gravatar CK on May 10th, 2008 at 19:47 (Reply)

Easy one - Ronaldo! Especially if you have a lead. The only person that could claim the armband of Ronnie this week IMO is Drogba!

Ya Mark cheers, this kind of dedication for no financial gain is a rare thing these days

  40. Gravatar MaL on May 10th, 2008 at 19:40 (Reply)

    B.Friedel
    N.Shorey, J.Terry, G.Clichy
    M.Ballack, D.Bentley, S.Hunt, C.Ronaldo
    R.S.Cruz, D.Drogba, J.Defoe

    Subs; R.Cerny, F.Muamba, P.Neville, T.Bramble

    ———————————

Any idea’s on captain ? or to change starting line-up?

  41. Gravatar CK on May 10th, 2008 at 19:49 (Reply)

    I would loose Defoe bigstyle!

  42. Gravatar Edwardo on May 10th, 2008 at 19:53 (Reply)

I don’t think Drogba will be a big big points scorer this weekend. I think if Chelsea do score, they will keep it tight, as will Man U, too much pressure to go playing fancy football.

Cheers for the site this season mark, hope 2 see ya next season ;)

  44. Gravatar Nigel on May 10th, 2008 at 23:12 (Reply)

Cheers Mark, thanks for the great website, as everyone else has said much praise goes to you, you have helped me win (I hope with a 40 point lead going into the last round) against some oponents that fancy themselves as Premier League experts a lot more than I do. Mt Team is:

    Reina
    Wheater, R. Ferdinand, Lescott
    Bullard, Fabregas, Ronaldo(C), Downing,
    Forssell, Berbatov, Defoe

Doyle (Goalkeep-er), Johnson (Midfield-er), Hutton (Defender), Boyce (Defender)

My one swap will be Lampard in and Fabregas out, have a hunch he will do better than Ballack and keep the same starting line-up. Thought about a Drogba swap for either Berbatov or Defoe but didn’t think the 4 point hit would give a certain payoff, if I was behind I would take the gamble though.

  45. Gravatar ryan on May 11th, 2008 at 07:04 (Reply)

Mark you are a LEGEND. The site has been invaluable to me. I am guilty of reading, taking advice and not contributing enough but I pledge to be a better resident next season! So i need a little help anyone.

Ive made my 1 transfer- Ballack in for Fab.

    Gordon
    Brown,Jagielka,Carvalho,Bikey,Taylor
    Ronaldo,Ballack,Bentley,Barry
    Young,Santa Cruz,Adebayor

5.1 in the bank and i want to spend!

I am 50 behind top spot but 23 ahead of 3rd so thats my main concern. His team is very similar except he has wheater,Bouma,Clichy and no Ronaldo!

Question is it worth taking a 4 point hit for drogba in for young/adebayor or shorey in for bikey or taylor? any other suggestions welcome.

ronaldo for captain appears unavoidable as i stare at the shirt hanging in my room in preparation for todays game!

cheers lads, good luck for today

    1. Gravatar puffinboy on May 11th, 2008 at 07:29 (Reply)

I’m in a similar boat, Ryan. You’ve only a snowball in hell’s chance of making up 50pts, so play safe and make your team as much like the person’s below you as possible, without taking too many hits. Ronaldo for captain is a must - it’s worked all season, no reason to change now.

(PS - Hey YerDad, yer Rochdale boys wuz robbed, but you should have revenge in the 2nd leg)

      1. Gravatar yer dad on May 11th, 2008 at 10:03 (Reply)

The Dale looked good in the second half and more likely to pinch it but the Dale keeper made the wrong decision to come for a free kick and wollop, 2-1. Should be a good 2nd leg at Spotland and I will be there with my flat cap and wippet cheering them on to Wembley. Problem I have is that if Rochdale get to Wembley, I have to cancel a trip to to Cork the same weekend and yer mum says she will chuck me if I do. So I could be single man by the end of the month. But on the bright side, i still have my allotment and my tomatoes are looking great after this heatwave.

  46. Gravatar ryan on May 11th, 2008 at 08:02 (Reply)

Cheers Puffinboy.. I agree only changes i could make to make the teams similar would be clichy, wheater and bouma in. I need another defender cause word has that bikey wont play, carvalho is a doubt and taylor is probably on the bench, that leaves my 3-4-3 one short at the back. I feel Derby in their last home game will go all out so Reading chasing the win are sure to concede for me. Wheater seems the tactical move but not so exciting! I guess the excitement is in the title and relegation battles.

OK wheater it is. How close are you with the person behind you Puffin?

    1. Gravatar puffinboy on May 11th, 2008 at 08:20 (Reply)

33 ahead, with 5 identical players and two defenders from the same team, so I ’should’ be safe.

The first and second in my league are 10pts apart, so it’s an exciting finish for them. The guy in 2nd is coming round with a few beers, so there’s going to be plenty of flicking between the two games and Jeff Stelling on Gillette Soccer Sunday.

As a Liverpool fan, my choice for the title is between a team I loathe and a team I really really loathe, so come on Chelsea! :(

(Hmm, I sure overused ’so’ in that post. Ah, so what.)

      1. Gravatar Brad on May 11th, 2008 at 12:12 (Reply)

Puffinboy - interesting you say that… as a fellow Liverpool supporter my preference is the other way around. While i don’t particularly like Man Utd, the main focus of my loathing is Chelsea. I reeeeally don’t want them to nick it. Oh well, i guess we can still agree that they are both evil. :)

        1. Gravatar puffinboy on May 11th, 2008 at 12:28 (Reply)

I’ve been a proud Utd-hating Red for over 30 years; I’ve only been a Chelsea-disliking Red for about 5 (they weren’t even on my radar till Mr Moneybags came along). It’s every Liverpool fan’s solemn DUTY to wish ill upon Utd - that’s why it’s been a tough past 15 years ;) :(

Chelsea are the spawn of Satan, where on earth have you been??

          2. Gravatar puffinboy on May 11th, 2008 at 12:35 (Reply)

It’s a North West thing; you wouldn’t understand. He said patronisingly.

Like most Reds, I don’t even hate Everton (that much).

          3. Gravatar Alex on May 11th, 2008 at 12:39 (Reply)

I know the history. But when Satan arises former rivalries shouldn’t matter anymore. You should all band together against him and his evil disciples.
