Everton Burnt By Chicago Fire

Filed under: Results - Posted by: Mark

Everton have won just one of their five pre-season games so far after slipping to another defeat at the hands of Chicago Fire in the early hours of this morning.

Moyes was able to call on a number of senior players including Yakubu, Osman, Pienaar, Howard and Arteta but watched on while his team struggled. James Vaughan also got himself a straight red in the final minute.

Everton have strong opening Premiership fixtures but, judging by their performances so far and the lack of transfer activity at Goodison, I’m beginning to get the fear over their start to the season.

Here’s the notes on this morning’s game…

Chicago Fire 2 Everton 0

Everton continued their miserable pre-season by slipping to their third defeat in five games.

To compound their misery they had James Vaughan sent off in his first appearance of the pre-season, having just returned from injury. Vaughan, eager to impress with Johnson on his way to Fulham and Anichebe missing due to Olympic involvement, was shown a straight red for a late challenge in the final minute.

The Everton lineup did include a sprinkling of young players but Moyes was able to call on Howard and Yobo as they returned from extended breaks. African duo Pienaar and Yakubu also made their first starts of the pre-season after both appearing as subs against Forest last time out.

Osman and Vaughan returned from injury and also figured as second half subs and Baines got his first start of the summer at left back. Hibbert, Cahill and Van der Meyde were all nursing injuries while Anichebe is preparing for the Olympics with Nigeria.

Everton continue their US tour with a game against Colorado Rapids on Sunday.

Everton vs Chicago Fire:

Howard, Neville, Baines, Lescott, Jagielka, Rodwell, Pienaar (Yobo 85), Gosling, Arteta (Vaughan 64), Yakubu (Jutkiewicz 79), Baxter (Osman 46).
